Question: Community service officers, an unarmed alternative to police officers, have been more prominent on campus since UOPD expanded its CSO program in 2020. The expansion followed feedback from student organizations and Black Lives Matter protests and the disarm UOPD movement in the summer of 2020. ASUO is deciding whether to support CSOs and is seeking student feedback. We asked students for their opinions.

The search for a new

VP

Following the recent resignation of the former ASUO executive branch vice president Odalis Aguilar-Aguilar, ASUO is in the process of choosing a replacement.

ASUO put out a statement about the vacancy on Instagram on Nov. 19.

“Vice-President Odalis has stepped away from her role to focus her ‘capacity in other projects around campus and my larger community where my experience and qualifications are valued and heard,’” it read.

Aguilar-Aguilar said ASUO asked her if she wanted to include anything in the statement, and she responded that she didn’t have anything to add beyond what she shared with ASUO president Isaiah Boyd. ASUO’s statement used a quote from an email Aguilar-Aguilar sent the ASUO executive and senate, she said.

“The quote that was used, I didn’t approve of,” she said. She said she was unaware the statement would include her quotes from the email.

Aguilar-Aguilar said a lack of communication between her and president Boyd led to her resignation. “I can’t help you if you don’t tell me about the things you are working on and how I can help you,” she said.

Aguilar-Aguilar plans to submit an op-ed to the Daily Emerald toward the end of this week explaining why she decided to step down as vice president.

In the Instagram statement, ASUO said it respects Aguilar-Aguilar’s decision to step down and thanked her for her time as vice president.

Isaiah Boyd said the vice president’s schedule and day-to-day responsibilities go hand in hand with the president’s. “We try to run the executive branch in tandem with one another,” he said.

A document highlighting the ASUO officer position descriptions can be found on the ASUO website.

The president and vice president’s responsibilities include representing ASUO student government with the community and ASUO members, advocating on behalf of student interests and overseeing student organizations recognized under ASUO. Boyd said the executive branch is collecting and reviewing applications. “The idea is to find someone who really has a compassion for the student body,” he said.

ASUO communications director Sam Simonett said he is disseminating the application and information about the role to university departments and clubs.

(Jessica Bolden/ Simonett said this includes clubs and Emerald) organizations that have expressed interest in ASUO and departments where a lot of students have an interest in student government, like the political science department.

ASUO has also put out a post on its Instagram with details on how to apply. The application deadline is Nov. 28.

Boyd said AguilarAguilar’s initiatives and goals were really inspirational and would like her replacement to continue her work while being able to fit into the new position smoothly.

Before resigning, AguilarAguilar was working with ASUO policy director Maya Ward on a bill institutionalizing the student government that Boyd said he wants to continue moving forward.

It says that the university will recognize us, but it poses a threat to our legitimacy,” Boyd said. The bill would prevent the university from recognizing another institution as the student government.

When looking at applications, Boyd said he is looking for what applicants are hoping to achieve as vice president. “I’m hoping to find someone that carries those same ambitions of ‘Hey, look, these are things I want to change,’” he said. “‘This is what gets me up in the morning. This is what I want to do if I’m going to be in this position.’”

Boyd said there will be a section on the new vice president in ASUO’s newsletter at the start of winter term. “We’re definitely going to try and get in communication with the student body and make sure they're aware,” he said. “Like, ‘Hey the old VP resigned; here’s the new VP; here’s how to reach them; here’s who they are.’”

ASUO director of recruitment and HR Michael Yoo said the replacement process for the vice president will be extensive because the position lies within the core team of the executive branch.

Yoo said he, Boyd and ASUO chiefs of staff Nathaniel Leof and Stephanie Villaneva will conduct the interviews.

After the interviews are finished, Yoo said a committee consisting of five directors on the executive branch will review the applicants. Those directors include Simonett, Ward, finance director Aaron Lewis, internal director Vanessa Taylor and himself.

Once Boyd has picked his candidate, he said, the senate will take a vote on whether they agree on the candidate, in line with a 2019 amendment to the ASUO constitution.

“All of our directors have a different perspective and different leadership styles, which is really beneficial,” Boyd said. “I’m not ideal for every single situation, so that’s where that VP position comes in as my complimentary half.”

The 2021 Oregon baseball season ended in heartbreak. The Ducks lost on their home turf, having to watch the LSU Tigers celebrate in front of a passionate Eugene crowd. Rubbing salt in the wound, they lost several key players such as Kenyon Yovan, Gabe Matthews, Aaron Zavala, Robert Ahlstrom and Cullen Kafka.

But all hope is not lost.

Once considered a lesser sport at a school known for its athletic reputation, the Oregon baseball program is rapidly accelerating in an encouraging direction. After the team hosted its first regional since 2013 and inked its head coach Mark Wasikowski to a five-year extension, the school is beginning to attract more of the nation’s top recruits and transfers.

One of the newest additions to the sudden drove of talent flocking its way to Oregon is Adam Maier.

Ranked by Baseball America as the No. 2 transfer in the nation after a strong showing in the Cape Cod League, the 19-year-old looks to fill the pitching void left by Ahlstrom, Kafka and Brett Walker.

A six-foot tall right-handed pitcher, Maier is from North Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. He started his collegiate career at the University of British Columbia. He was successful as a freshman in limited 2020 action, posting a 2.84 ERA in 19 innings.

Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Little did Maier know it would be another 15 months until he played in a competitive baseball game. Due to health and safety precautions in Canada, the entire 2021 baseball season was canceled.

“It was pretty frustrating not being able to play, but I think I used my time really wisely and just kept working on getting better every day,” Maier said. “I had a pretty good attitude toward staying strong in the gym every day and trying to develop my different pitches — get a little more velocity, a little more movement.”

With the team unable to play a competitive baseball season, UBC head coach Chris Pritchett helped his players find teams to play with outside of Canada.

Maier eventually landed on the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League.

After 15 grueling months, Maier said it was relieving

to finally get to play again.

“I remember the first game I was definitely a little bit nervous,” Maier said. “Because one, not playing, and two, playing in the pretty prestige league in Cape Cod, I was definitely a little bit nervous, but I think I settled in midway through the year.”

Maier pitched six games (five starts) in the Cape, coming away with an 0-2 record and 4.56 ERA. More significant than the stats, though, Maier impressed scouts with his velocity and sweeping slider. He reached as high as 96 mph with his fastball, and his high-spin slider had a 45% called plus swinging strike percentage — considered an elite mark.

Coming from a three-quarters arm slot, his fastball sits in the low 90s. His slider generates swings and misses, sitting in the low 80’s and spinning at 2900 revolutions per minute (another elite figure).

On July 24, Maier set a Yarmouth-Dennis record with 12 strikeouts in a game. He also induced 21 swings and misses.

“That might be one of the best games I’ve had in the last five years thrown up here,” Yarmouth-Dennis manager Scott Pickler told The Athletic. “[Maier] finally put it all together.”

Maier describes his fastball and slider as his “bread and butter,” with his slider being his main out pitch.

But he also attributes a substantial aspect of his progression to a third pitch that he’s begun to mix in — his changeup.

“That was probably my biggest improvement over the past year,” Maier said of his changeup, which sits at 84-87 mph. “I feel like that pitch has kind of taken me to the next level… Having that changeup to kill hitters off balance is definitely big.”

Maier’s breakout performance in the Cape shot him high up the radar of national scouts. Former White Sox consultant Nathaniel Plotts called his slider “the best breaking ball in the 2022 draft.” Baseball America ranked him as the No. 9 prospect in the entire Cape Cod League, and the offers from Division 1 schools started rolling in.

“I thought it would be the best decision for me and my career,” Maier said of his decision to transfer.

What's next: Oregon men’s basketball heads to Las Vegas for Maui Jim Invitational

Coming off a 81-49 loss to BYU in Portland, the Oregon men’s basketball team is headed to Las Vegas for the 2021 edition of the Maui Jim Invitational.

Oregon opens play against Chaminade at 6 p.m. on Nov. 22. If the Ducks win, they will face the winner of Saint Mary’s vs. Notre Dame. Should the Ducks lose, they’ll face the loser of that game.

The other teams in the eight team field include Texas A&M, Houston, Butler and Wisconsin.

An eight-hour drive from home, Maier chose Oregon with the desire to play at a Pac-12 school and because of pitching coach Jake Angier’s reputation with his pitchers, as he told Prospects Live. He said it’s been a remarkably easy transition for him, highlighted by the team camaraderie and work ethic.

Now, Maier joins a squad looking to establish itself as one of the top baseball teams in the country.

“I think we’re going to be capable of doing some pretty great things this year,” Maier said. “We got a really good squad. Through the fall, watching different guys compete, not even just at practice but day-to-day in the weight room, and with their diets and everything like that, we’ve got a pretty good atmosphere. That was definitely something I wanted to be a part of.”

Last season, the Ducks could rely on their ace Ahlstrom to bring forward a strong effort every Friday night. With Ahlstrom moving on to professional baseball in the New York Yankees organization, Maier is a candidate to fill that hole.

“I would love to be that guy,” he said. “So do a number of other pitchers on the team. It’s kind of a unique scenario; we’re all competing for that job, ultimately.”

With his prospect stock rising and a chance at his first full collegiate season, everything seems to be on the upswing for Maier. But he’s simply focusing on working hard and getting better, he said, with confidence that the results will come.

“I don’t really like to set goals like ‘I want to have ‘X ERA’ or this many strikeouts,” Maier said. “I just think if I work hard and I’m executing pitches, then everything will take care of itself. I just gotta be me, and I know that the rest will unfold the way it should.”

As a young, rising prospect bringing his skills to Eugene, Maier represents the next wave of Oregon baseball talent. While last year’s group came up just short, there’s no limit to what this batch of players believe they can accomplish.

“We have a phenomenal group of guys, and we get along really well,” he said. “Hopefully we can go to Omaha and win the whole thing.”

Seven book recommendations for some of the best songs on “Red (Taylor’s Version)”

The release of Taylor Swift’s latest album “Red (Taylor’s Version)” already has millions feeling happy, free, confused and lonely in the best way. A rerecording of her 2012 album, the album’s tracklist has a story anyone can get lost in. With 21 rerecorded songs and nine bonus songs, including a 10 minute version of a beloved fan favorite, “Red (Taylor’s Version)” is an investment that’s worth every minute spent and emotion felt. This album is also great to listen to while reading. If you liked these “Red” songs, try these reads that perfectly correlate to some of the new album’s best tracks.

1. If you liked “State of Grace,” try reading “Lost at Sea” by Bryan Lee O’Malley Raleigh is an incredibly shy 18 year old who claims a cat ate her soul. Somehow, she ends up going on a cross-country trip with three of her classmates who she’s never spoken to before.

Although the first track on “Red” is a song about a romantic relationship, it can just as easily be applied to platonic situations. “Lost at Sea” is all about a girl finding herself in an unexpected situation with an unexpected group of people that change her forever.

2. If you liked “Treacherous,” try reading “Stardust” by Neil Gaiman Every nine years in the rural English village of Wall, a market for both Faeries and humans is held on the Faerie side of the stone wall that separates the two worlds.

Eighteen years after being delivered in a basket to his human father, Tristran falls in love with Yvaine, who lives on the other side of the wall.

Both “Treacherous” and “Stardust” are about a love that leads to adventure and danger, but is worth every treacherous step. They’re the kind of works that make you want to risk everything for love. “Stardust” is considered one of Gaiman’s more out there works, similar to how the release of the original “Red” album marked a musical turning point for Swift when she began to transition from country to pop.

3. If you liked “Holy Ground,” try reading “Normal People” by Sally Rooney “Normal People” follows the friendship and romance of Irish teenagers Marianne and Connell as they navigate their way through secondary school and university while both being deeply emotionally damaged.

“Holy Ground” is about reminiscing on a relationship that’s since ended. Although each person involved suffers a heartache, they both understand the relationship ended where it needed to and look back at their time together with fondness.

“Normal People” follows this vibe, capturing the romance between two adolescents as they become adults. It follows the ups and downs, the triumph and turmoil of being young and in love.

4. If you liked “The Lucky One,” try reading “Wonderful Today” by Pattie Boyd and Penny Junor One of the most influential musical muses, Pattie Boyd, shares her life story — from her childhood to her skyrocketing modeling career and her marriages to rock legends George Harrison and Eric Clapton.

Swift has said Boyd and her life have served as an inspiration for her, and she even interviewed the rock and roll muse back in 2018. Boyd’s autobiography highlights her experience as an icon of the music and fashion scenes of the 1960s. She writes with plenty of love for her past, but much like “The Lucky One,” her book reveals the immense pressure that comes with being a young woman under a spotlight.

5. If you liked “The Moment I Knew” and “Sad Beautiful Tragic,” try reading “Apologies That Never Came” by Pierre A. Jeanty “Apologies That Never Came” is a dissection of heartbreak and agony that comes alive through poetry made up of words that were never spoken and feelings that can’t be expressed in any other way.

Much like how “Red (TV)” is a breakup album, “Apologies That Never Came” is a breakup book of poetry. It’s an excellent companion to read to just about any song on the album, but Jeanty’s writing flows so well with the poetic lyricism of “The Moment I Knew” and “Sad Beautiful Tragic.”

6. If you liked “Come Back… Be Here,” try reading “We Are Okay” by Nina LaCour Mabel is determined to reconnect with her best friend Marin after Marin leaves everything and everyone behind in the wake of her grandfather’s death.

“We Are Okay” is about longing for a person you once knew and the struggle of being close with someone who pushes everyone away. It shares the same wistful writing as “Come Back… Be Here” and the understanding that grief is part of healing.

7. If you liked “All Too Well (10 Minute Version),” try reading “It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover Flower shop owner Lily Bloom finds her bout of bad luck has seemingly changed when she meets neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid. Despite Ryle’s aversion to relationships, Lily finds herself becoming the one exception to his no dating rule.

Author Anna Todd once described “It Ends With Us” as a “brave and heartbreaking novel that digs its claws into you and doesn’t let go, long after you’ve finished it.” To put it simply, this book hurts in the same way the full 10 minute version of “All Too Well” hurts. “It Ends With Us” shares the song’s emotional intensity that builds up and breaks down in the most tragically beautiful way possible as the main character gives everything she has to love and ends up losing half of herself in the process.

Both are bound to leave a mark on your heart.

Any of these books are bound to let you relive the flurry of emotions that comes when listening to “Red (TV).”

How often you want to have sex varies depending on mood, stress levels, context and much more. So, the simple answer is no — it is not bad that you are not as horny as your boyfriend.

However, having different sex drives can impact the relationship, so here is some advice on how to deal with it.

First, communicating with your partner is important. Let them know that you have a different sex drive than them and that not being as horny has to do with you and not them. This is important because your boyfriend might take it personally when it isn’t meant to offend or hurt their feelings.

Once you have expressed how you’re feeling, then you can feel a little less stressed because your boyfriend knows. A few questions to ask during this conversation could be: 1. Does it bother you that I have a different sex drive than you?

2. Will this drastically impact our relationship?

3. Is it a dealbreaker?

is meant to be constructive and make your relationship stronger.

After having this conversation, you can examine why you are not as horny. Sometimes, it is biological, and your sex drive is just low. If that is the case, it is very normal, and you will have to remind your boyfriend of that. However, sometimes a low sex drive is caused by external factors like stress, school work, professional work, personal issues, anxiety or depression. As college students, we are chronically stressed, and you may feel overworked. Examining your habits, lifestyle and workload will help you see if external factors are impacting your sex drive.

If you realize external factors are impacting your sex drive, stress management activities like having a consistent sleep schedule, exercising regularly, reducing course load and making time for mindfulness activities, such as meditation, can all help. When you feel more comfortable and relaxed, your sex drive may increase.

Additionally, your partner can help! Many people

are not turned on enough before having sex. Making sure your boyfriend is doing what you like and performing foreplay may increase your horniness.

For example, if being kissed on the neck turns you on, let them know. Or, if you enjoy being eaten out, ask them to start with that. Asking them to engage in activities that turn you on will make the experience more enjoyable for both of you!

It is important to remind yourself that being less horny than your boyfriend is not a bad thing and it is very normal. Nothing is wrong with you. You are human, and you have a different sex drive. However, you need to communicate with your boyfriend and make sure you are trying to satisfy both of you. If you do not like to have sex as often as them, that is fine — tell them that. Leaving your boyfriend in the dark will only cause issues in the relationship.

Communicating and working through this together will make your relationship stronger and will hopefully lead to some fun and enjoyable sexual experiences.

The season of thanks is officially among us.

Students are preparing to either head home for Thanksgiving or stay in Eugene where they can celebrate with their friends. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays for multiple reasons: being surrounded by friends and family, the beautiful fall weather and the delicious meals at the dinner table – not to mention Thanksgiving leftovers.

If you’re like me and are heading home for Thanksgiving, but are still planning a Friendsgiving or two, it can be hard to decide what to bring to the table. Taking responsibility for the Thanksgiving turkey can be very intimidating and requires cookware most college students don’t own. Mashed potatoes can be time consuming and difficult to perfect.

One of my favorite Thanksgiving sides is my Aunt Lauri’s garlic green beans. These green beans take up 1/3 of my plate every year, and I never fail to go back for seconds. She often packs me a to-go container of green beans because she knows how much I love them.

and Friendsgiving side because they don’t require a lot of ingredients but are still packed with flavor. For college students who are spending on a budget and don’t have access to a full kitchen, this is the perfect Friendsgiving recipe for you!

Ingredients 1-2 Bags of green beans (depending on how many servings you want) ½ Cup of soy sauce 1 Tsp of sugar ½ Tsp of sesame oil 2 Tsp of minced garlic Instructions 1. Empty your green beans into a strainer and wash thoroughly. With kitchen scissors, remove the ends and cut green beans in half.

2. Boil a pot of salted water. Put green beans in

for 4-5 minutes and then drain them so they don’t overcook.

3. In a small bowl or measuring cup, mix soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil and garlic together.

4. Heat up a large pan and add a drizzle of olive oil with some minced garlic. When the garlic is aromatic, add in your green beans and cook for a few minutes.

5. Add your soy mixture to the green beans and saute for a couple minutes.

6. Season with salt and pepper to your liking and enjoy!
