Picture this: it’s 9 p.m. on a Thursday night. Maybe you’re trudging home from the library, or you just finished up a group project and it’s time to celebrate. You could just be sitting at home in your pajamas. Whatever your situation, the problem is the same: it’s raining, and you’re out of beer.

What if you could just log on to CornucopiaEugene.com and order up a six pack or a bottle of wine? Here’s the thing—you can. Starting this November, alcohol—along with the rest of their delicious food—will be available for online ordering and delivery from Cornucopia directly to your door.

No raincoats, no boots and no need to experience the elements at all. Interested?

We thought so. Here’s the lowdown: Nils Stark owns Cornucopia on 17th Street, and he’s excited to provide one of the only restaurants in Eugene that

delivers beer and wine. In fact, they’ve been offering alcohol delivery for three years, and it has definitely caught on.

Currently, orders for food and booze delivery are placed over the phone, but his web developer is putting the finishing touches on the online system that will be ready Nov. 1, just in time for the nasty weather to really settle in.

Cornucopia is known for their burgers, which were voted 2017’s Best in Town

by Eugene Weekly readers. They have 15 (fifteen!) unique burgers to choose from. Each one consists of a half-pound of locally raised, all-natural Oregon beef.

The best part is that you can substitute tater tots for fries with any burger, or if you’re not a carnivore—or if you just love veggie burgers—you can opt for a house-made local tempeh and black bean “vurger.” These are the obvious choice to accompany your beer, but Cornucopia’s extensive and diverse menu is sure to have something for everyone.

There’s a wide selection of beers to choose from, most of which are not listed online. Of course, you can request popular IPAs by Ninkasi and Oakshire, Cascadian Cider, and classics like PBR, Budweiser and Coors. The choices don’t stop there; Cornucopia also offers dozens of microbrews that are coming to the website soon. For the rest of us, there’s a decent selection of wines including pinots and even Brut—yes, you can celebrate finishing your homework with champagne. Now that’s amazing.

Delivery is available from Cornucopia on 17th from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The fee is $3 for most of Eugene’s campus neighborhood. Alcohol delivery is limited to two six-packs or two bottles of wine per customer. Orders are prepaid over the phone, so if you don’t have ID, you’ll have to ask for a refund. Don’t be that guy.

Ever wonder exactly who shows up at your door when you order from Hungry Ducks?

Usually, they knock, you pay, and they’re on their way. But what if you could get to know the beautiful human who helps satisfy your appetite and curb your munchies? Nelson Trujillo, a 4th-year double major in Human Physiology and Popular Music Studies, is one of those people behind the curtain.

We sat down with him to hear more about his experiences as a Hungry Ducks driver.

Emerald Essentials: How long have you been working with Hungry Ducks?

Nelson Trujillo: I have been driving for them since last April.

EE: How many hours do you work per week?

NT: I usually work between 20-22 hours a week.

EE: What’s your favorite shift to work?

NT: The Sunday afternoon shift has been my jam lately. It’s usually busy pretty much all day and people are just at home studying. It’s kind of nice to see everyone just hanging out and enjoying their weekends and it’s kind of relaxing for me 4to drive | Earound s s e n t i atown l E a t sa Mlittle a g a zbit. ine

EE: What’s the strangest encounter you’ve ever had with a customer?

NT: I drove all the way out to Springfield one night on an order and I started to realize that I was heading out of the residential area. I was around all these businesses and warehouses I didn’t recognize and the GPS lead me into this parking lot. I pulled into the parking lot and realized it was a strip club. This woman ran up to the car when she saw me and was all, “Are you Nelson?” She was on her break or something and just really needed chips and queso from Qdoba. She was so happy to see me and get her food. I drove away and was like, “I just delivered food to a stripper.” It was awesome.

EE: What’s the most positive encounter you’ve ever had on the job?

NT: There are a lot of cute dogs that I run into. Sometimes they watch me come to the door and then they start barking or scratching at the door or whatever, but some of them are so cute and I get to pet them and say hi. That’s one of the fun parts of the job.

EE: What is the best part of the job?

NT: The hours are great. We really are our own bosses. We get to work when we can and set our own hours, and it’s a great way to make really good money.

EE: What is the worst part of the job?

EE: Do you have any advice for people who order over Hungry Ducks?

NT: Sometimes it’s discouraging to tally up the money I’m making as I go along during a shift. Not everybody tips and it can seem like a waste of time if I try to keep tabs of what I’m making along the way. It’s always better to just wait until the end of the shift. I usually end up making a decent amount of money even if it seems like I’m not.

NT: Make sure you follow the instructions on the app.

It was mostly before I started working there, but I sometimes drop off at my coworkers’ houses and they open the door and I’m like, “Hey!”

Hole-in-the-Wall Barbecue and at a couple other places, but I love eating at Evergreen Indian Cuisine. Sometimes I pick food up there and put it in my car and it smells so good— especially when I’m hungry.

And my girlfriend works at Bon Mi, so I suppose that is one of my favorite places, too. I sometimes get to see her when I pick up there.

EE: How has working the job changed your perception of your peers and the community?

NT: It has definitely made getting around Eugene easier. I get to know the area so well, so now I feel like I can drive anywhere and find anything. I go out on the town less now that I am a senior, and it’s kind of fun to go through all of the motions of being a freshman and sophomore again. And it’s kind of fun to see all of the younger students enjoying Eugene.

EE: Have you ever encountered anything particularly gross while working?

NT: There are a lot of gross things that happen, especially on Thursday and Friday nights. I think it was the first Thursday night of this school year. I was waiting around for food at Caspian’s and some girl was throwing up everywhere. And sometimes the houses I deliver to smell kinda gross. It can get really weird.

EE: What’s your favorite thing to listen to while you drive?

NT: I listen to a lot of electronic music to kind of pump myself, but if it’s been a long shift and I’m stressed out, I listen to some more mellow stuff. And I listen to a lot of podcasts. Right now, I love Harmontown, the podcast by the creator of “Rick and Morty,” Dan Harmon.

We get to work when we can and set our own hours, and it’s a great way to make really good money.

Maybe it’s Friday night. Or maybe it’s Tuesday night – it doesn’t really matter. Tonight is pizza night. This begs the question – where to order your next pie from? Before you turn to the food review oblivion that is Yelp, remember that you’ve got options – any of which can be delivered right to your doorstep.

With the help of Hungry Ducks, you can find deals on pies, calzones or whatever Italian confection you’re craving. Here are some of Hungry Ducks’ premier pizza choices, all of which offer speedy delivery.

al Taglio al Taglio is the kind of pizzeria to go when you want it all – New York-style flatbread pizza, antipasti, freshly-tossed house salads, paninis and more, all delivered straight to your door. Making matters even better is the kind of deals they’re handing out – a slice and a salad from al Taglio won’t make your wallet cry like some of the other Italian places around town.

Their self-proclaimed “Eugene style” slices come in vegan and traditional varieties, so nobody will have a reason to frown on their next pizza night.

Mezza Luna Some pizzas you want to share with some close friends after a rough week. Some pizzas you want to eat cold for breakfast after a wild night out. - Native Content words by Delaney Rea | photos by Trevor Meyer It’s 1 a.m. and you’re hungry, but you don’t feel like going out to get food. It’s raining and you’re hungry but you don’t want to get wet.

You’re in your pajamas chilling and you’re hungry, but it’s too much effort to get dressed and go out. You’re studying and your brain needs food, but you still have hours of work to do. Sure you can order pizza, but what if you feel like Thai food? Or sushi, or a gyro or barbecue?

So who you gonna call? Hungry Duckbusters? Er, no. HungryDucks. com, that’s who. And yes, there’s an app for that. As the founder and market owner of Hungry Ducks, Darren Rabie has played a major role in bringing convenience and accessibility to the food scene in Eugene.

The even better news? He’s only getting started.

Hungry Ducks is a food delivery network that connects over 100 restaurants in the Eugene/Springfield area to both UO students and residents of the city. Some of their most popular clients include Falling Sky Pizzeria, Chula’s Cantina & Grill, Caspian Mediterranean Café and many, many others. What began as a fledgling business just over three years ago is now one of the most successful food delivery enterprises of its kind.

It was several years ago that Rabie came to the University of Oregon with grad school ambitions in mind. After checking out what kind of programs the school had to offer, he decided that starting his own business would be just as worthwhile as pursuing another diploma. At his previous alma mater, the University of Colorado, Rabie had worked for a food delivery service that had found respectable success.

This business model would ultimately be his inspiration. Given that the mascot of CU was the Buffalo, his previous employer aptly went by the moniker “Hungry Buffs.”

As an homage, Rabie chose the name Hungry Ducks.

However, the path to success for Rabie’s new business venture wasn’t immediate. For the first year and a half of their operations, the service sputtered without gaining much traction. Initially, Hungry Ducks only worked with restaurants willing to do their own delivery and provided online ordering as well as marketing services for those clients. With only a limited amount of delivery restaurants near campus, the business never got moving in the right direction.

It would be a simple change in the core business model that turned things around. When the service began offering delivery in March 2014, the amount of business Hungry Ducks received changed – drastically. “It exploded overnight,” Rabie says of the effect brought by the

delivery service. Ever since it became an option, customers took notice. Popularity gained rapidly, and it hasn’t let up in the ensuing years – each year, Hungry Ducks serves more customers and businesses than the last.

In fact, Hungry Ducks has been aggressively attempting to serve a broader customer base. Just recently, the business opened up their delivery range to include Springfield, too. This is far from the only change they’ve recently taken to shake up how they get food to the community.

Delivery is now available starting at 8 a.m. each morning and until 2 a.m. on the weekends. Changes like these have had a major effect on Hungry Ducks’ capabilities; since 2016, they’ve more than doubled the number of Eugene and Springfield restaurants whose food they deliver.

Drivers are another aspect of Hungry Ducks that just keeps growing. Though they started out with just handful of drivers, that number has since ballooned to over 90.

Before you send in your application, know that they don’t put just anybody behind the wheel — the line of waitlisted applicants is quite long. The driver system at Hungry Ducks is similar to the one in place at ride service organizations like Uber or Lyft. The drivers aren’t actually employed by Hungry Ducks; they simply work as independent contractors and get to choose the hours when they want to work. The positions are entry level, so no prior delivery experience is necessarily required. Additionally, Hungry Ducks takes an equal-opportunity approach to its hiring process, as not all of the drivers necessarily have to be students. In this way, the company provides a job market to the greater community of Eugene.

Now that school is back in session for fall term, Rabie’s business is as busy as ever. During the summer, campus business tends to slow for obvious reasons. Now that everyone’s back and ready to hit the

books, Rabie and his team are hitting the ground running with student advertising and tabling outside the EMU. The week of November 6th will be their annual Eat Cheap Week, during which Hungry Ducks will offer a variety of deals and promotions when ordering through their service. However, this is far from the only student-benefitting promotion that the company will offer during the school year.

Once finals roll around, you’ll want to look out for their Red Bull sponsored event.

With each delivery arriving with a free can of Red Bull during finals week, Hungry Ducks makes itself an ally to all studying ducks. It’s partnerships like these that allow Hungry Ducks to make college life just that much easier.

The only part about ordering with Hungry Ducks that isn’t easy is deciding who to place an order with on their intimidatingly stacked roster of restaurants and eateries.

With so many delicious options, it’s hard not to play favorites. Rabie admits to having a special affinity for some of his service’s Thai food options. Manola’s Thai Cuisine, Sweet Basil Express, and Chao Pra Ya are a few he counts among his favorites. It’s popular restaurants like these that Rabie sets his sight on for collaborators.

Rabie intends to continue expanding the Hungry Ducks empire as much as possible, which means breaking outside of the UO area. While the initial market was intended only for students, good ideas are hard to confine when residents, business offices and hotels in town have discovered the convenience of food delivery.

The stork may deliver babies but Hungry Ducks will deliver your food over and over again. It’s just so easy, you may never leave your home again. When it comes to an abundance of food options to be delivered to your door, Hungry Ducks is the only game in town.

Come for the burger, stay for the beer — they have one of the broadest selections in town, and a great atmosphere.

Happy Hour All Night at Izakaya Meiji Voted Best Restaurant by Eugene Weekly readers, Meiji has crave-worthy Japanese tapas for the best prices, which get even better on Mondays when you can order the happy hour menu all night long. Snack on chicken, shiitake or hanger steak skewers and a rice ball for under $10 all while sipping a Meiji Mule that’s just six bucks.

TUESday Burger & Brew at 6th Street Grill There’s always a Burger & Brew special somewhere in Eugene, but 6th Street Grill’s is by far the best deal. Their $10 burger comes fully loaded with bacon, two types of cheese, avocado, grilled onion and portobello, along with your standard lettuce, tomato and mayo. The best part is the cold one that comes with it — and you have 18 taps to choose from. $2.50 Tuesday at Elk Horn Brewery Elk Horn’s got some seriously good food, but their beer is exceptional. They took home a bronze medal at the World Beer Awards for their oatmeal stout, and they’ve got 23 other house taps to choose from, including cider! Beers are just $2.50 each every Tuesday night. It’s the cheapest and best craft beer you’ll drink in Eugene, so grab your thirsty friends and go.

Being vegan is no easy task. It seems like everywhere we turn, there are meat and dairy-filled temptations.

Sometimes, it’s difficult to feel like we can eat like “normal” people and with “normal” people.

Veganism is difficult, but knowing your options makes it so much easier, especially when it comes to take out. We need to be able to curb our late-night munchies or mid-day cravings just like the next guy.

Take-out is an essential part of college life, and vegans should not have to miss out.

A Q&A with Chef Ryan Gengler One of the best-kept secrets in the campus neighborhood is the Elk Horn Brewery and Cider House. It’s a family-owned gastropub with 24 craft beers and ciders on tap and a Southern/NW fused kitchen. Decorated with antlers and whiskey barrels, their large dining room features live edge wooden bar seating and a shuffleboard table. Elk Horn chef Ryan Gengler met us in the kitchen at Elk Horn, where he had a few tips to share with hungry ducks everywhere.

Emerald Essentials: How long have you been at the Elk Horn?

EE: It was smelling pretty good outside.

Ryan Gengler: About a year and a half.

RG: Yeah, the smoker gets fired up at

The first restaurant I worked at when I was 18 was a brewery with a restaurant. When I took the job, I had just gotten back from France, and I met [the owner] Stephen. We started talking, and Elk Horn was here, so I thought I’d give it a try.

EE: What does “a day in the life” look like for you?

RG: I get here around 5:30 to 6 a.m.

and turn everything on. I make sure everything’s lined up for the day and I find stuff we don’t have and figure out a way to work around it. I get the specials going and make sure everyone is on the right track as far as prep.

EE: How long are you here for each day?

RG: About 12 hours. Sometimes 10, on a

good day, but usually about 12 hours, five days a week. Still, I find myself here on the sixth and seventh day trying to get things done.

7, and there’s meat on there by 8. That goes all day, until 3, 4 or 5 o’clock, when everything’s done.

EE: Do you have a favorite food on the menu?

RG: You know, it depends on what I’m

in the mood for. I love the cheese curds. I love the dirty fries. I like the Maker’s Mark Bacon and Blue Burger, and the Chicken and Waffles is really good. It just depends, because I eat here all the time. Let’s say we smoke the pulled pork one day, and I’m dealing with it all morning on the smoker and then in the oven. By the time that comes out at 5:30, I’m probably going to eat that because it just came out of the oven, and I can’t help myself.

EE: Has delivery always been pretty popular here?

RG: We get quite a bit of to-go food. A

lot of burgers and sandwiches, and a lot of appetizers.

EE: What travels well?

EE: What’s your favorite cookbook?

RG: The Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese, all

RG: I like reference and science books, so

the sandwiches and all the burgers. The Dixie Picnic platter also travels well.

EE: There’s at least six things on there, right?

RG: Yeah, we pack all those things up

separately, so they can be as perfect as possible. A lot of things here are messy and saucy, so we leave a lot of the sauces and condiments off of the burgers and sandwiches for delivery.

EE: Where do you like to shop for food?

RG: I like to go to the outdoor market,

when it’s going on. Other than that, I don’t get a chance to leave very much. But we use a good produce company that’s based out of Portland, and they come to Eugene twice a week. Elk Horn uses a lot of local and seasonal stuff.

EE: What would you be cooking if you lived in a college dorm?

one of my favorite cooking books is called “On Food And Cooking.” This gentleman Harold McGee breaks down the science of almost everything you can think of.

But then he’s also got lore behind it, so he’s got nice stories tied in with all of his scientific proof. He breaks it into meats, and vegetables and dairy. He goes from the beginning of time, talking about how we started gathering, all the way to modern cuisine. Then he ties it all in with science and cool little stories. I think “America’s Test Kitchen” is probably my go-to book if I have to find recipes.

EE: What’s the most difficult thing you’ve ever cooked?

RG: There was a Thanksgiving we took

a Cornish game hen and then stuffed it inside a duck, and then stuffed that inside a goose. It was kind of like a Turducken. It was for a meal we had planned for friends and family through our restaurant. We used the restaurant kitchen but it was quite a bit of prep. It took three days to get it ready and 6 to 8 hours to cook it. But it was good!

EE: (Laughs) What if you wanted to make something nicer?

RG: I guess if I were going to be cooking

for my friends in the dorm kitchen, I’d probably make meatloaf, mashed potatoes, some veggies and a salad. That’s always easy.

EE: Do you have any quick cooking tips for college students who are just learning how to cook?

RG: I think the best thing to do is just to

decide what you like, and maybe do a little research on where it comes from and what you need to prepare it. Definitely buy good ingredients, and maybe just look at some recipes before you get started and get an idea of what you need to do. Preparation is obviously one of the most difficult parts, so be prepared.
