FROM 2021

Ten different albums from five genres to enjoy and reflect on this past year of music.

Indie Rock: “Jubilee” By Japanese Breakfast (Spotify and Apple Music) Filled with bubbly synths and strings,“Jubilee” is Eugene’s own Michelle Zauner’s dreamy rock album.

Her clever lyrics on love are both sweet, like in “Kokomo, IN,” and dark, as in “Posing In Bondage” and “Sit.” The song “Savage Good Boy” has stellar songwriting and an analysis of wealth that fits this year as it speaks to saving up money even if the world is ending. It also delivers bouncing happiness with songs like “Slide Tackle” and “Be Sweet.”

“Doomin’ Sun” by Bachelor (Spotify and Apple Music) Musicians Palehound and Jay Som join forces for a powerful rock album. They create a strong rock atmosphere in songs like “Stay in the Car” with acoustic in “Went Out Without You” and “Doomin’ Sun” and electronic influences on “Back Of My Hand.” There are also slow jams that build with each section in the songs “Anything at All,” “Sand Angel” and “Moon.” Their breathy and sweet voices work together whether they are bouncing off one another or singing in harmony.

Country/Folk: “I Know I’m Funny haha” by Faye Webster (Spotify and Apple Music) Softly spoken words wisp their way through this Atlanta musician’s fourth album. It’s a fantastic pairing of heartfelt lyrics and subtle orchestration, whether it be from the sweet stings of strings or the low wail of the slide guitar. Webster feels alone at times on songs like “A Stranger” and “Better Distractions” but also bittersweetly hopeful in “In A Good Way” and “Cheers.”

“Pale Horse Rider” by Cory Hanson (Spotify and Apple Music) Founding member of psych-rock band Wand, Cory Hanson, delivers a heavy take on country music covering his hometown, addiction and religion. His guitar playing reaches peak emotion with the solo on “Another Story From the Center of the Earth” which spirals into distortion. With fantastic slide guitar in “Paper Fog” and airy drums on “Limited Hangout,” Hanson creates his own unique explosion of music.

Indie Pop: “Juno” by Remi Wolf (Spotify and Apple Music) This is the future of pop music right here as Remi Wolf proves that exploration into new and different sounds can go a long way. With tinges of hyper-pop on the song “Liquor Store” and hip-hop on the song “Guerrilla,” Wolf screams and sings with the most powerful voice on every track. There are plenty of goofy moments, like in the song “Sexy Villain,” on this album that make it enjoyable while still having serious moments hidden throughout the album, like on the song “Anthony Kiedis.”

“Music” by Benny Sings (Spotify and Apple Music) Already a prolific pianist, Sings mixes a fantastic blend of influence and collaborations from other artists to create a fresh pop record. If you want to feel good, listen to songs like “Nobody’s Fault” or “Sunny Afternoon,” and if you want to feel nostalgic, listen to songs like “Kids” or “Here It Comes.” “Music” boosts the listener with its catchiness in the song “Rolled Up” and leaves the listeners feeling upbeat and positive.

Hip-Hop/ Rap:

The album is intriguing and diverse, with tracks reminiscent of the feeling of the sun pouring into your room on a summer evening, like“Red Room,” and a love song about animal reproduction that manages to be so soulful like “Chivalry Is Not Dead.”

Lead singer Nai Palm pushes her voice to new levels of feeling on “And We Go Gentle” and guides a fantastically tight band.

“Collapsed In Sunbeams” by Arlo Parks (Spotify and Apple Music) Poetic with its words of sweetness in songs like “Black Dog” and sadness in songs like “Caroline,” Parks’ songwriting reflects her internal dialogue and moments in her life perfectly. Her voice, like a warm vinyl crackle, sings words to help the listener in songs like “Hope” and to teach them to feel less alone and to share their feelings. It is incredibly beautiful with its groovy music and themes of hope and sadness in each song.

While 2021 may have faded behind us, these are some fantastic albums that should follow us into the new year. With fantastic adventures through different sounds and genres, these 10 albums offer a perfect taste of the best music of the new decade.

“Sound Ancestors” by Madlib (Spotify and Apple Music) A producer with a growing fan base, Madlib creates a collage of sound that is nostalgic yet new. The sampling is some of the best, creating head bumping beats in “The Call” and sound explorations in “Sound Ancestors.” Using a blending of samples that keeps every quick track intriguing on “Two for 2 - For Dilla” and “Road Of The Lonely Ones,” Madlib is able to create a colorful and perfect album.

“Sometimes I Might Be Introvert” by Little Simz (Spotify and Apple Music) This long album from the British-Nigerian rapper may seem daunting, but there are no skippable songs in it. From the dramatic opening of “Introvert,” we get an array of styles with classic beats on “I Love You, I Hate You,” electronic on “Rollin Stone” and African groove on “Point and Kill.” Simz’ lyrics shine the brightest on tracks like “Woman” and “Little Q.” The interludes are entertaining as well, filled with inspiring prose.

Soul/R&B: “Mood Valiant” by Hiatus Kaiyote (Spotify and Apple Music) Inspired by jazz and psychedelic rock, this Melbourne group returns after a six-year hiatus.

While last year was an emotional rollercoaster, there is much to be discovered in the music that was created. 2021 was a full year of splendid music from every genre as we entered a new decade that brought brand new indie, rock, hip hop, pop and R&B sounds.

Here are a few fantastic albums that are worth holding onto as we look back at last year.

ADMITTING POST-COVID TRAUMA REMAINS Iverson: After a term of in-person classes, it finally feels like college again. However, moving on blindly will isolate our peers that still suffer from the mental aftermath of the pandemic.

BY BRAYDON IVERSON It’d be unfair to expect students’ mental states to return to normal only a few months after more than a year-and-a-half of isolation and remote learning.

Unfortunately, anxiety and depression following COVID lockdowns were an expected hurdle after stumbling out of our isolation, yet that hurdle has proven to be more troublesome than many people on campus may want to admit. As the second term of the academic year began, I found myself asking, “Even though I’m back on campus and speaking without having to unmute myself, how come I still don’t feel normal?”

I felt, and still occasionally feel, as though I haven’t recovered as fast as others — and perhaps there is some statistical merit to that. A recent survey ​​ presented by the Hi, How Are You Project last November estimates college students are slowly beginning to feel better. As reported, 62% of students surveyed stated their overall anxiety levels felt higher than normal, a 23% improvement from the responses a year prior when Hi, How Are You conducted the same survey.

Despite these gains, we can’t ignore that the overwhelming majority of those polled still don’t feel right, and rightly so. Some still feel slighted or need more time to readjust to social and academic life on campus and in person. After all, we missed out on the feelings of camaraderie with our fellow students for an entire academic year plus a term. However, I worry the student body’s collective mindset is that the path before us is a game of catch-up to normal life rather than a road to recovery.

As a community, I believe there are actions we can take to aid other students in rebuilding or repairing our emotional health, and the foremost collective action should be a series of admissions: an admission that the events of isolation and worry throughout a pandemic aren’t typical and can’t be handled as such; an admission to ourselves that we still don’t feel right due to those events even though they seem at a near end; and an admission to others that we feel this way, making them more comfortable to voice their own admissions.

Conceding to yourself that you have yet to mentally mend is no act of weakness. Comparing your rebuilding process to the ones of those around you is futile; we’re not all made of the same bricks and weren’t knocked over by the same stones.

A year of stones will take time to heal from. Not being completely rebuilt doesn’t restrict you from helping others find their parts. You don’t need to feel rejuvenated in order to help rebuild someone else.

Admitting that you still feel the blows of the pandemic will open up someone else around you.

Truthfully, no one still feeling off their center due to the pandemic is alone in the slightest.

“Just talking about it with my roommates helped a lot,” UO third-year student Paul Lee said. “I realized they felt the same as me and how much weight I was carrying alone.”

Thankfully, the aforementioned survey suggests there is a population of students that seem to be realigning themselves faster than others. They may hold an important role in aiding others on campus.

To those that feel ready for life to resume, that feel centered now despite the wear and tear of the past year, I only ask you to merely compensate for others that don’t. This could take several forms. For example, in class you could speak to others and openly state that it “feels weird” being back in person. Even without directly addressing problems your peers may still be facing in regards to this new reality, you help make that reality more accepting by pointing to the obvious.

Lastly, continue to check on those around you.

We’ve come to an adverse course of assuming others are ready to continue without acknowledging the titanic weight of pandemic debris. It’s understandable to feel a sense of desperation to return to life as we remembered. Yet perhaps in a scramble to do so, we are leaving behind people who may not feel ready.

It becomes difficult to jump back into normal life if we ourselves don’t yet feel “normal.” Moreover, if we don’t all take that jump together, life will never completely return as it was. Accepting among ourselves the reality of recovery, without rushing what damages remain in our psyches, will lead to the actual end of the pandemic on campus even after the virus is contained.

RINGING IN A NEW ERA OF OREGON FOOTBALL Ducks enter 2022 with a new staff and, likely, a new identity.

Mario Cristobal’s departure to Miami began a domino effect for the Oregon program. Shortly after, it lost almost its entire coaching staff, as well as losing many recruits and players to the transfer portal. The 2022 season brings Eugene a year of change, with many new faces to look forward to. Here’s a look at the staff newlyhired head coach Dan Lanning has put together.

Co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach –– Kenny Dillingham Dillingham has been an offensive coordinator at a handful of schools, with stints at Memphis, Auburn and most recently, Florida State. His connection to Auburn helped him in the process of getting one of the top transfers in the nation to join him in Eugene: Bo Nix. Dillingham and Lanning both coached under Mike Norvell during their time at Memphis. Lanning made it a recurring theme in his hiring process to hire former co-workers.

Florida State’s offense averaged over 27 points and upwards of 370 yards per game this season. Those stats are comparable to Oregon’s offensive production, as Dillingham looks to improve with a new roster full of talent.

Co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach –– Junior Adams Junior Adams was one of the final hires in Coach Lanning’s staff, according to the reports that came in on the first day of the new year.

Adams has spent the last three years at Oregon rival Washington as the school’s wide receivers coach. He is no stranger to the West Coast, a California native who played ball at Oregon State while also having coaching stints at schools like Eastern Washington and Boise State.

During his stint at Washington, Adams served as the primary recruiter for a quartet of 4-star receiver commits, one of which, Jalen McMillan, recently entered the transfer portal.

Co-defensive coordinator –– Tosh Lupoi Although much of the defensive scheme will be determined by new defensiveminded head coach Dan Lanning, new co-defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi will help build Oregon in the trenches. Lupoi returns to college football after a brief three-year stretch in the NFL. Lupoi brings a polished resume, starting in the Pac-12 with California and Washington, as well as five years under Nick Saban at Alabama.

Lupoi worked with Lanning in Alabama in 2015, where he was eventually promoted to defensive coordinator in 2018. Lupoi, known for his recruiting ability, has been responsible as the primary recruiter for 19 top-150 recruits. Five players on his Alabama defense went on to be first-round selections. He’ll look to add to that number with an Oregon defense flooded with top-tier talent.

Co-defensive coordinator –– Matt Powledge Joining Lupoi as a co-defensive coordinator is former Baylor safeties/special teams coach Matt Powledge. Powledge was Lanning’s second hire, following offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham. Powledge is yet another hire who has ties to head coach Dan Lanning. The two coached together briefly at Sam Houston State.

Powledge has had great success in developing members of the secondary, most recently helping Baylor safety Jalen Pitre be recognized as a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award this season.

Offensive line coach –– Adrian Klemm Adrian Klemm joins Lupoi as another former NFL coach joining Lanning’s staff in Eugene. Klemm was most recently the offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, spending three years under Mike Tomlin.

He brings over 10 years of coaching experience with him to Oregon, both at the collegiate and professional levels. He started his career as a graduate assistant at SMU before moving up to offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.

Recruiting is one of Klemm’s most promising attributes. He has close connections to the West Coast from his time spent at UCLA. He was instrumental in bringing eventual first-round pick Kolton Miller to the Bruins and helped eight offensive linemen reach All-Pac-12 honors during his tenure.

Defensive line coach –– Tony Tuioti Tony Tuioti has 19 years of coaching experience under his belt and comes to Oregon after spending the last three years as the defensive line coach at Nebraska.

He has close ties to the West Coast, Hawaii and the Pacific islands, all places that Oregon has thrived on when it comes to recruiting and player development in the past. He also brings even more NFL experience to a coaching staff with plenty already, spending two seasons as the Cleveland Browns’ assistant defensive line coach.

Defensive backs coach –– Demetrice Martin Demetrice Martin, also known as “Coach Meat,” has already brought in extreme value in his short time at Oregon. Martin’s son Cole is a four-star defensive back in the 2023 class, who recently committed to Oregon.

Martin has coached all over the Pac-12, spending time at USC, Washington, UCLA, Arizona and most recently, Colorado. He’s especially known for being an elite recruiter, already recognized as one of the best in the conference. In his six years at UCLA, the program ranked in the top 20 recruiting classes every year.

Tight ends coach –– Drew Mehringer Drew Mehringer, 34, comes to Eugene as one of the youngest members of an already youthful staff. Mehringer spent the last season as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of New Mexico.

Mehringer has had stops at Houston, FAU, Texas and Rutgers, all with various offensive coaching roles. One of Mehringer’s top achievements was being named Rivals Recruiter of the Year in 2019 when he served as the primary recruiter for a pair of 5-star receiving threats.

Special teams coordinator/inside linebacker coach –– Joe Lorig Joe Lorig spent two years with Lanning at Memphis. Lorig has plenty of coaching under his belt, starting his coaching career in 1997. He’s been an established special teams coordinator at schools like Arizona State, Memphis and Penn State and will look to turn around a unit at times riddled with shortcomings in years past.

Running backs coach –– Carlos Locklyn Carlos Locklyn comes to Oregon with little on-field coaching experience. Locklyn spent the last season with Western Kentucky in the same role. Prior to that, Locklyn was at Florida State as the director of high school relations.

Locklyn is set to coach one of the most exciting position groups Eugene has to offer, with youngsters like McGee, Byron Cardwell and Sean Dollars set to make strides.

STRUGGLING TO STUDY ABROAD Students studying abroad during the pandemic face uncertainty, travel restrictions and varying COVID-19 guidelines in different countries, but many still recommend the experience.

Madalyn Chase, a recent UO graduate, had her original study abroad plans thwarted at the beginning of the pandemic.

“The summer between my sophomore and junior year I was supposed to go to the Copenhagen Business School,” she said. The program was canceled, and although Chase was offered the option to do the program virtually, it wasn’t what she was looking for. She later got an email from GEO that another program they offered, Psychology and Business in London, was going in person.

“It started in April, and I got this email in March,” Chase said. “I applied on a whim and was so excited when I got in because I had been waiting forever to study abroad.”

Chase was the last of five students that joined the program. The other four students in her program had applied the year before, but the program was postponed to the summer of 2021. “They had all been on this emotional roller-coaster of if they would get to go or not get to go,” Chase said.

As UO students continue to persevere through the pandemic, many study abroad programs have been canceled or pushed back because of travel restrictions and quarantine regulations. Although these barriers exist, UO students and faculty are still working hard to keep study abroad programs running. Things might look different than they did before the pandemic, but many Ducks are more than willing to adjust to a new normal while thousands of miles away from Eugene.

Choosing to fly out or log onto Zoom Students choose to study abroad for various reasons, from learning a new language to building community in a different country. While online study abroad options have been available throughout the pandemic, they don’t make the cut for many students interested in exploring another culture.

Autumn Lukens, a first-year student who is hoping to study abroad in Italy during the summer of 2022, wants to learn Italian and earn language credits.

Lukens will have to take part-time classes next year in order to earn in-state tuition, so she’s trying to fulfill her language requirement with an immersion program over the summer. “I have always really PA G E 1 0

wanted to go to Italy,” Lukens said. She took a gap year and was originally going to be an “au pair” in Italy, but when COVID hit, her international travel plans were put on hold.

Chase found that one of the biggest benefits of her study abroad program in London was building connections with the people involved. She said she got really close to her professors and Mary Hiles and Amanda Milburn, the heads of the GEO center in London. There were only three or four people in each of her classes, so the interactions Chase had with her professors were very personal.

“I still email with my professors, and I’m still in contact with Mary and Amanda because we had that opportunity to get so close to them,” Chase said. “I think that made the program so special and made up for anything that could have been missing.”

In response to the pandemic, UO moved many of its 2020 and 2021 study abroad programs online.

Many students don’t see virtual options as adequate replacements for studying abroad. Lukens said she is “really nervous” that the study abroad program she wants to do will move online. “I just want to go,” Lukens said. “I don’t really care if things are closed or if I can’t do specific things. I just think it’s really important in furthering your education to study in a different country and learn about a different culture.”

For some students, the value of studying abroad lies in the traveling itself. UO senior Oscar Sigala chose his current exchange program in Prague and the Czech Republic because of its location. “Prague is in the middle of Europe, and it’s my first time in Europe so I wanted to have the ability to travel,” he said. Sigala’s plans to tour Europe were challenged by the new wave of COVID, but he still was able to see a lot of places on his list before Omicron really hit.

“I got here the last week of September, and October and November were still a good time to travel,” he said. “There were fewer restrictions.” Despite the new wave of COVID, Sigala still got to travel to Barcelona, Budapest, Krakow and Vienna.

Students doing studying abroad programs in March of 2020 had to complete them online to earn credit. “It was exactly the same as it was at UO,” Amanda Milburn, the director of the GEO center in London, said. “Students went home and classes went online.” The London GEO center did a lot of remote

experiences in the 2020/21 academic year. “It allowed us to connect with students who weren’t able to study abroad but still wanted that international element,” Milburn said.

Milburn explained that rising seniors who graduated in 2021 and students who were planning to study abroad in the future and wanted a head-start were prime candidates for these programs. “I was really proud of what we were able to achieve during the online programs,” Milburn said. GEO facilitated a conversation partner program with students from other schools in Southeast Asia and China who weren’t able to travel to the US but wanted to practice their English. Guest lectures were also available over Zoom, with faculty from the UK joining classes from the U.S. “You never would have thought, prepandemic, that someone would come into your class from the UK on Zoom,” Milburn said.

Navigating COVID-19 safety restrictions in a different country Students studying abroad have to get used to new, and oftentimes stricter, COVID-19 guidelines. As of Jan. 5, 2022, countries such as Canada, India and Italy have issued a shelter in place protocol similar to that of March 2020. The United States is a step below these countries, recommending but not requiring that its citizens stay indoors. France, Spain and Germany have chosen to restrict international travel along with the United States, making it harder to get in and out of the country.

“London has a lot more restrictions than the US does,” Chase said. “When we got there, the US was relaxing their mask mandates and easing up on all of their restrictions. But when we got to London, we weren’t even allowed to go into the GEO building for the first couple weeks.”

Milburn elaborated on the COVID-19 restrictions in London. “Regardless of your vaccination status, if you’re a student or in higher education, you have to take a lateral flow COVID test twice a week,” she said. Milburn has been taking them twice a week since March of 2021, and they are available for free because of the UK’s socialized healthcare system. Milburn explained that the tests take 15 minutes and that you can report your result to the National Health Service with a QR code. “It’s a good way of knowing, especially when you’re meeting

COVER people, if you have COVID asymptomatically,” Milburn said.

As an American institution in the UK, the GEO center in London had to decide between following US or UK COVID-19 guidelines. “We decided that whichever rule was the strictest, that’s the one we would follow,” Milburn said. Things like social distancing and household mixing rules, which were loosened in summer 2021 in the US, were still very much in place in the UK. The US also has exemptions for people who were vaccinated, which the UK didn’t have. “This has more to do more with our kind of cultures around healthcare,” Milburn said.

As an American in Europe, Sigala said it’s difficult to provide proof of vaccination. “We have our CDC cards, but everyone here uses a QR code which is so much easier,” he said. Sigala explained that the EU offers a digital vaccine passport with a scannable QR code, which some consider more streamlined and efficient than a physical vaccine card. “Sometimes when you go somewhere and they ask you for your vaccination, you show them the card, and they look at it for the longest time,” Sigala said. “It can be easily replicated. It’s better with the barcode system.”

If Sigala doesn’t get his booster shot before Feb. 1, he will be considered unvaccinated in Prague. “I had my flight back home set for Feb. 10 or 12,” Sigala said. “So most likely I will head home in late January or early February.” He’s considering getting his booster while he’s abroad but doesn’t know how it will transfer on to his record in the US. “If I get my shot here, I have to figure out if it will count back home,” Sigala said.

Some students are concerned that the US isn’t taking COVID-19 seriously enough to maintain in-person study abroad options. Lukens said she is afraid other countries won’t want to take American citizens because the U.S. hasn’t taken the pandemic as seriously. “Hopefully everyone gets their boosters, and we can still do international travel,” she said.

Despite the challenges COVID-19 has created, Sigala is optimistic about the future of study abroad programs. “I think eventually study abroad programs will return to what they were before COVID,” Sigala said. “Even though there were restrictions with COVID, I think the first few months I was here I got a good general study abroad experience.” Sigala was still able to travel, attend school and participate in events for exchange students.

Safe but still fun Milburn and her colleagues at GEO were challenged to come up with a study abroad experience that was “interesting and exciting for students who came in knowing not everything was open.”

Students couldn’t travel to different countries on the weekends like they usually do, and as a result, they got to know London really well.

Milburn and her coworker Mary Hileslead walking tours around the city in lieu of the other usual weekend or indoor activities.

She led a tour on a street called Brick Lane that students liked so much it’s a regular part of the London programs now. The street is rich with the cultural history of Bengali migrants, Jewish migrants and French Huguenots. “We started the tour at the oldest bagel shop in London, and walked, looking at the beautiful political street art,” Milburn said, “and we finished at an outdoor market.” The market was still open and completely COVID safe, so students had the opportunity to shop around. “You just have to consider what to do outside and what you can do with the cityscape,” Milburn said.

Kaelene Spence, the institutional relations specialist at GEO, follows the same train of thinking as Milburn. “Students aren’t going on a five different country experience,” she said, “but they said that’s only enriched their study abroad experience.” Staying in one place rather than traveling to multiple countries allows students to fully immerse themselves in the culture.

Spence believes that students' interests in studying abroad have peaked after the pandemic. “They’ve been stuck inside for so long, and they want to get out and explore,” she said. Spence thinks that students are still getting all the important aspects of a study abroad experience, just in a different way. She also detailed the safety precautions that GEO is taking, saying that some students feel safer abroad than they do in the U.S. because of stricter COVID guidelines.

“If people want to study abroad, it’s still possible with COVID,” Sigala said. Sigala, Chase and Milburn all agreed that students are still able to have a fulfilling experience abroad, even if it looks a little different than it did before the pandemic. “Studying abroad can change your whole outlook on life,” Chase said. “If you want to go abroad, don’t let the pandemic stop you.”

ONE TERM DOWN, TWO TO GO

UO faculty reflect on a term of in-person classes and the lessons learned from Zoom after 18 months online.

The University of Oregon returned to in-person classes fall term, eighteen months after initially moving online due to COVID-19. The fall 2021 term was anything but normal with masks, social distancing and vaccine mandates.

Some departments and schools housed within UO had to make adjustments during online learning and when coming back to in-person learning. While there are many positives of returning to campus, the lessons from the 18-month stretch of online operations are sticking with students and professors alike.

It’s good to be back Transitioning and continuing college online was a challenge for many professors and students.

“I think it took a lot of people by surprise with how little time we had to move onto Zoom,” UO’s Divisional Dean of Social Sciences Philip Scher said.

“It suddenly dawned on people that this might be a long-term deal.”

UO offered most classes online from the spring of 2020 to the fall of 2021, when classes were moved inperson again.

“It was a superhuman effort on the part of all of our faculty and staff to move our coursework online,” Randy Kamphaus, dean of UO’s College of Education, said. “I am astounded they were able to do it and even more astounded that it was successful.”

Jack Boss, the department head of Academic Music and a music theory professor, teaches classes of primarily graduate students. He said the classes would meet on Zoom during the class period and do basically everything that they would have done if they were in a classroom.

“A lot of us tried to make it as normal as possible even though we couldn’t actually come into the building and see our students,” Boss said.

But since then, nearly every department at UO has made the transition from online learning back to inperson lectures. Many of these departments welcome back in-person courses for their unique learning experiences.

Kamphaus said he gauges success based on conversations with students, faculty members and staff.

“The faculty has been able to report to me that they are very satisfied and pleased to be back and interacting with students in person,” Kamphaus said.

“I’ve had some concerns from students who wanted a class to be remote. That’s a very small number of students though.”

Some classes that are offered at the College of Education require hands-on field experience, like student teaching. Kamphaus said those opportunities give students experience in front of families and students and help to maximize their time at the College of Education.

Kamphaus said the most successful outcome of moving back to in-person learning has been the morale boost. “The pleasure of being around one another again has been helpful to all parties at UO,” he said.

Boss said that the social aspect of schooling is also more robust with in-person classes. “The one thing I really missed during the pandemic was running into people in the hallways,” Boss said. “Now we have those opportunities back, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Boss said most of the students he worked with were excited to be back and were engaged in their schoolwork throughout the fall term. Faculty at the School of Music and Dance even held a few welcome

back parties.

“There is always a certain excitement when fall rolls around,” Boss said. “This year there was a lot more of that than before because we were able to be together.”

Lessons learned from Zoom Although many are relieved to return to campus, Zoom university presented some benefits and tools that proved to be useful for in-person learning.

Kamphaus said professors picked up three main methods or skills as a result of online learning that are now being implemented throughout in-person teaching. The first was better email communication with students. “That became the most preferred means of communication,” Kamphaus said.

The second skill, Kamphaus said, was the means to create better discussions among students during class. “Faculty would like to continue to use those discussion boards, breakout rooms and similar discussion platforms — even when they are teaching face-to-face — to enhance student learning and engagement,” he said.

The third method that faculty from the College of Education will continue to implement during inperson classes is the use of Panopto and recorded lectures to help students review content.

Boss also said online learning and Zoom had a few perks, one being the ability to host guest lecturers from all around the world. Boss has continued to incorporate this use of technology in the fall of 2021.

As in-person classes — with some modifications from the era of Zoom — continue, Director of Language Instruction Robert Davis said he is impressed with how the campus community is respecting safety guidelines.

UO CARE FACILITIES STILL LIMITED AFTER COVID-19 Closures and operational changes due to COVID-19 have had lasting effects on UO’s child care centers and those who need them.

BY ABBY SOURWINE Maria Escallón, an assistant professor of anthropology, came to the University of Oregon in 2016 while pregnant with her daughter. She made use of the Vivian Olum Child Development Center until its closure in March of 2020 due to COVID-19.

Escallón and her husband, an assistant professor of landscape architecture and environmental studies at UO, spent the next 18 months homeschooling their daughter, splitting time between teaching and research responsibilities and care responsibilities.

While UO’s care facilities are slowly rebuilding their capacity to accommodate pre-pandemic volumes of children safely, they face struggles with hiring and retention, as well as paying attention to the mental and emotional health of both staff and those they care for, Rachel Jefferson, director of the Co-Op Family Center, said. Meanwhile, UO community members who spend more time giving care face career setbacks with little support, Escallón said.

Jefferson said the Co-Op was closed from August to November of 2020.

“We did a soft opening, so we had less hours, less staff, less kids, less classrooms at the beginning, and we've slowly been growing ourselves back,” she said.

Aside from the school-age aftercare program returning next term, all six programs are running with limited hours and lower enrollment. While the Co-Op can normally accommodate up to 85 children in a day, it currently serves between 50 and 60, Jefferson said.

Escallón said finding care in Eugene is always difficult, and COVID-19 made it even harder. She said she is just hearing back from care options in Eugene she contacted when she was pregnant five years ago.

Caregivers have a lot more to weigh when it comes to care facilities due to COVID-19. She said she held off on re-enrolling her daughter at Olum for several months due to safety concerns.

Jefferson, also concerned for safety, said the Co-Op can only accommodate as many children as staff can safely and appropriately support, and the Co-Op continues to struggle with staffing and hiring.

“For a full year there were only two admin doing the work of four in our office and now we have three during the work of four,” Jefferson said. “I'm personally the new director but I'm also still being the pedagogy coordinator. We have absolutely no access to substitute teachers.”

The lack of substitute teachers and appropriate staffing can be an issue because taking time off for illness is essential for everyone’s safety, Jefferson said.

“A shortage of qualified caregivers continues to pose unique challenges for the university’s child care centers,” UO spokesperson Kay Jarvis said in an email. “The university continues to seek qualified caregivers and we are speaking with our families and staff, in search of interim solutions in an effort to continue providing this vital service to our students and employees.”

Jefferson said the Co-Op needs two more lead teachers and two more teaching assistants to get to a point where increasing enrollment would be feasible.

Aside from the numbers, many staff members are tired.

“We're seeing a lot of challenges around children that are having a hard time and presenting that through challenging behaviors in the classroom, which then can be overwhelming for the staff,” Jefferson said. “They need more support and more training, which we're trying our best to do.”

Supporting staff through hiring and training comes at a cost, though, and the Co-Op has “not been operating in the black many months out of the year,” Jefferson said, and is not in the financial position to hire positions with benefits. Plus, the wage the center could offer is not competitive for the skill level of the job.

The annual salary of an early childhood assistant at Olum is around $28,600, according to the UO Office of Institutional Research.

“UO has expanded its efforts to retain and recruit full-time, part-time and student positions in the midst of staffing shortages being experienced across the country,” Jarvis said in an email. “These efforts include offering bonuses for qualified applicant referrals, retention bonuses, and pay increases.”

Through Early Learning Division grants, the Co-Op has begun to offer bonuses to staff. The most recent ELD grant applied to bonuses lasts until April, and F R I D AY, J A N U A R Y 7 , 2 0 2 2

NEWS the team is still weighing whether an overall raise would be better than a bonus, even though they’re not sure they could fund higher salaries after April.

“We're looking to try to support people in individualized ways as well as kind of across the board bonuses,” Jefferson said.

Last summer, Escallón started a caregiving campaign to advocate for caregivers at UO — whether they work in care facilities or not — to be considered as a distinct group with specific needs who were impacted in distinct ways by COVID-19.

She said the lack of support for caregivers is a social issue, as caregivers are often women of color, and caregivers will struggle to progress their careers at the university without support. Often, when new responsibilities are added to professors, their research suffers because there is less accountability for research than for teaching or leading departments.

Already in the field, “women and caregivers are not submitting papers and producing reports and writing as much as men, for instance,” she said. “They're diminishing their capacity or their ability to submit new grants and fellowships.”

That’s what happened to Escallón. She is on the tenure track and had to extend the clock for maternity leave as well as COVID-19.

“You lose money in the sense that you're not getting a raise, and then that costs you in retirement forever,” she said.

In the study, Escallón chose 10 universities across the United States that have made at least one big policy change due to COVID-19. She said she found that most of them decided to do a one-year extension of the tenure clock and a few granted COVID-19 funds, some more successfully than others. She found none of the large policy changes addressed the structural inequities caregivers face. They are one-off changes to respond to a moment of crisis.

“At some point, most people in life are caregivers for somebody,” she said. “It could be a parent, it could be a loved one, could be a neighbor. It doesn't have to be biological. I think it's such a large issue that is missing from the discourse in the narrative of inclusion and diversity in the university so far.”

In tumultuous periods of national politics, it’s easy to feel disengaged and powerless. But work can be done — locally.

Call it a coping mechanism — or a bad habit — but terrible news inevitably leads me to Twitter. It’s an endless cycle; I get a notification from a news app, scroll through the story and immediately head to Twitter to see what others are saying. Seeing others vent about the chaos unfolding around us is simultaneously anxiety inducing and therapeutic.

One feels less alone when others panic with them.

The problem is that the cycle invites inaction. With so many issues arising every day, the last part of our process has become scrolling through media to purge internal fears onto a public forum for comfort, only to be blindsided by the next crisis immediately after.

Exposure to trauma across the nation only exacerbates the trend. Take the killer Kyle Rittenhouse for example: When the news broke that the court found him not guilty of murdering the two anti-racist protesters he shot and killed in Kenosha, Wisconsin, I and those around me felt disempowered.

Events far from Oregon felt as though they were

stripping me of my agency. This is the crux of our inaction problem; inundation of national crises blinds us from taking action on individual tasks, even those right in front of us.

This phenomenon feeds perfectly into a national liberal agenda. The current moderate Democratic agenda works through an institutional approach that is designed to inch the status quo leftwards. Tangible action is reduced to feeble campaigns calling for people to vote in the distant future. Improvement has become a long term consideration, maintaining the illusion of progress while being careful to not upset the general national hegemony. This comes in the shape of trickle-down progressivism, where focus on national improvement is promised to yield local benefits. Our media reflects this; a majority of news covers mainly national-scale politics.

The crisis cycle adds to this. With constant exposure to mainly national politics, the sheer amount of catastrophe becomes a breeding ground for passivity. Ending each piece of news by simply scrolling through media is a liberal dream.

Disillusioned consumption replaces tangible action.

With our focus on the national scale, the liberal agenda can assert dominance, ensuring meaningful change remains only a promise.

There is, though, a path to breaking the cycle: local work. My dejection following the horrifying Rittenhouse verdict and powerlessness surrounding national problems distracted me from the fact that

there are problems in my own community that require help. Here in Eugene, houselessness remains an issue that is talked about but not acted on. We can start here. Locally, there are many ways to help the houseless. Volunteering with Eugene Mission, donating food and supplies to Food for Lane County or even simple monetary donations are necessary places to start. Lesser known, but extremely effective, forms of aid include the Neighborhood Anarchist Collective and Food Not Bombs, both of which provide zero-barrier mutual aid to unhoused peoples and those in need.

When crisis strikes, it’s inevitable that we will panic.

It’s essential to remember that feeling bad or having sympathy by recognizing a problem does nothing.

Even if it feels better, dread cannot overcome the passivity institutionalized by a national-focused liberal agenda. With every catastrophe, the news cycle that ends with personal panic only leads to more disasters gone unaddressed. We have a responsibility to end the crisis cycle that bolsters a status quo agenda. I do as well. Writing and consuming media cannot be an end in itself. It must be a catalyst.
