What started as a tradition a year before my arrival at the Emerald by my very first photo editor Sarah Northop, the year in review is an issue that the Emerald photo desk takes great pride in creating. I started at the Emerald in 2019, my freshman year of college. I was wide-eyed and unaware of the many opportunities that would come to me because of this publication. Over the years I’ve made life-long friends, grown as a photographer and finally stopped using an oxford comma. Since becoming photo editor in the summer of 2022, I’ve learned even more about the world of journalism: all the stressors and headaches –– but also the pride of putting out excellent work, something I feel the desk has abundantly achieved throughout 2022. As graduation peeks right around the corner, it saddens me that this is my last school year (and year in review) with the Emerald. But every day I thank my nervous 18-year-old self for taking a chance and pursuing a career in journalism that never seemed possible for me until the Emerald.
All sappy-ness aside, it goes without saying that no one year is like the next; much like every story, they are all distinct and impossible to recreate. The one thing that every year does have in common is there is always a sense of reflection at the end, looking back on what you accomplished and then looking forward to what may be next. This year is an exemplary showing of the desks’ work, but this spectacular work done by my colleagues (most importantly my friends), will not stop in 2022. I am happy to present a retrospective look on the work of the most talented people I know in the best way we know: visually. These photos were

This is a particularly captivating photo, not only because of the event itself, but also due to its intense ability of capturing the event’s attendees as a whole. It’s a photo that went beyond the Emerald and ended up being posted by Bernie Sanders’ team!
This is a photo taken by Will Geschke, who graduated in the spring. One of my key moments in the Emerald was working on this photo story with Will in the spring, which ended up winning us fifth place in the ACP Awards best photo slideshows of 2022!

I took this photo ten minutes into the NCAA Track and Field finals and it remains my favorite image taken at that event. I could use big words to describe why I like it but honestly I just love the way it captured the “process” of a jump through 5 different stages by 5 different people.

This photo is incredibly captivating to me because of the intense detail found within it. You can see just the tip of the hand and some bees in focus, while the background and other bees are just slightly out of focus. It does a great job of capturing the honey harvesting event as a whole even on such a small scale in frame.
This is the perfect example of capturing the essence of an event in a single photograph. The way the subject (Dua Lipa) pops out paired with the background also being herself is just such a good representation for that specific concert. This photograph alone should get us an interview with Dua Lipa in my opinion.
