Arizona’s leading tackler has a lot on his hands this week as he tries to stop– er, slow–Oregon’s dynamic duo of Kenjon Barner and De’Anthony Thomas when the Ducks and Wildcats open conference play. Fischer missed last season rehabbing a knee injury suffered in the ‘Cats 2011 spring game, but he hasn’t missed a beat in his first season back from a torn ACL. Fischer won Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors in week one with a 13-tackle (nine solo) performance against Toledo and had an even better outing when the Wildcats routed then No.18 Oklahoma State. But in Thomas and Barner, Fischer faces a backfield as talented as any in the nation with Barner’s workhorse presence and Thomas’s ability to cross the goal line any given time he touches the ball. This week’s game has the added bonus of Fischer trying to beat the block of a man who shares his name, the Ducks own Jake Fisher.

pac-12's wild ride continues The Pac-12 is a weird, weird conference. First, the conference hasn’t had a winning bowl season since going 5-0 in 2008. Last year’s realignment — ostensibly to allow for a conference championship game for more moolah and visibility — ended up as sort of a failure in its first year. With USC — clearly the only team in the Pac-12 South with a legitimate shot at beating Oregon — grounded by mom and dad, the inaugural title game ended up a lop-sided snoozefest between the Ducks and the Bruins. Think about that. You had a 6-7 UCLA team fresh off a 50-0 loss to a crosstown rival applying for a waiver to play in a bowl game with the Rose Bowl on the line. Even though this season is young, plenty of surprises have already shaken up the conference this year, potentially setting up a much wilder and more exciting end to this season. And so far the place for excitement is Palo Alto, Calif. While no one really anticipated the Cardinal dropping off a cliff with All-Galaxy quarterback Andrew Luck headed to the NFL, Stanford proved they can’t be counted out of the race for the conference title this year with their win over Matt Barkley and the Trojans. This week’s water-cooler talk centered on the damage done to Barkley’s promising Heisman campaign, but the most telling thing of Saturday’s game was Stanford’s defense — they were good for five sacks, two interceptions and, more importantly, they left a gaping hole in USC’s perceived invulnerability. Oregon fans didn’t know whether to be happy Trojans lost or scared of the Cardinal. Then there’s our friends in Corvallis. The biggest question mark for the Beavers is whether their old-school 10-7 win over then-No. 13 Wisconsin was a fluke. Because of last week’s bye and Week One’s matchup against Nicholls State postponed (or potentially canceled) due to a tropical storm, Oregon State’s only

seen the field once this year. All eyes will be on them as they slog through a tough road trip against UCLA and Arizona these next two weeks. We really don’t even know much about Oregon after three weeks. Marcus Mariota’s played only one full game under center, and Oregon’s defense has been allowed to take the second half off three straight weeks. If Cal plays Oregon as tough as they played Ohio State last weekend, things could get hairy for the Ducks in Berkeley, just like they did two years ago. Perhaps the only thing we do know is that no one’s scared of playing Colorado. John Henderson of The Denver Post warned that this year’s Buffs could be headed for their worst season in program history. And that was before their 69-14 obliteration at the hands of a Fresno State team recovering from their own blow-out loss to Oregon. What could the spread possibly be when Colorado comes to Autzen on Oct. 27 — 80? 200? At least new Washington State head coach Mike Leach has bought into the topsy-turviness of nonconference play. In the Cougars’ win over UNLV on Saturday, Leach looked like an impatient teen playing Madden, choosing to pass the ball several occasions while up eight with just minutes left. The move didn’t come back to bite him, but even the announcers were confused with his game management. It didn’t help Leach’s reputation as a ballsy, potentially crazy man, but I’ll admit it makes for exciting TV. So, pull up a chair and get ready for year two of Pac-12 play: Where up is down, down is up, and a Utah/BYU game can end three times before it’s really over.

ith talent like Kenjon Barner and De’Anthony Thomas in the backfield, it can be hard to find playing time outside of garbage minutes. But freshman running back Byron Marshall’s speed and versatility has forced coaches to turn to him as their third option. On campus just a couple months and about to start his first classes in college, Marshall has already seen more rushing carries this year than Thomas. The Emerald caught up with the 5-foot-10 San Jose, Calif., native, who ran for 125 yards on just 13 carries in last week’s rout of Tennessee Tech. Your brother Cameron is the featured back as a senior at Arizona State. Is there some sibling rivalry there? Who’s better? Of course there’s competition — we’re both competitive. I don’t know about better. Obviously I’d like to think (I am), but he would say he’s better, so it goes back and forth. But yeah, there’s a little rivalry. Everything we do — video games, eating, playing, it doesn’t really matter.

(Running backs) Coach Campbell said you were better than he expected and as good as he hoped this year but also mentioned he wanted you to get in a little better shape. How are you tackling that? I just go harder in practice, take the reps as fullest as I can because you can’t really simulate game speed, so in practice as long as you go a little harder, that’s your best bet

for the game. What did you think about De’Anthony Thomas’ Sports Illustrated cover? I mean, congratulations. I saw that last night; he worked hard for it. He deserved it. … Just watch him as he plays. He makes a big run, he doesn’t get up and celebrate, he hands the ball to the ref every time he scores, jumps up with his linemen for the blocks. He’s about the team; he doesn’t really let the hype get to his head. Anyone tease him about it at practice today? Not that I heard, no. What does the cover say about your program? It shows what kind of team we are, what Coach Kelly always emphasizes, sportsmanship, being humble, and don’t let the news and stuff get to your head. And I think (De’Anthony) demonstrates that. Do you believe in the SI cover jinx? Nah, I don’t really believe in that kind of stuff. I think he deserved it, and he’s gonna take off from here. Has anything stood out to you on Arizona’s game film? They’re a good team. They’re a Pac-12 team. Physical, plays hard, runs to the ball. We just have to play our game. I think we should be fine.

BUILDER OF MEN He is the epitome of

Oregon football — longevity, success, style and class.

î Running backs coach Gary Campbell has been mentoring tailbacks for the Oregon Ducks for 30 years now, making him the longest-tenured coach in program history, as well as the longest-tenured current coach in all the Football Bowl Subdivision. In his three decades in charge of Oregon’s backfield, Campbell has tutored 12 1,000-yard rushers, including the likes of Onterrio Smith, Reuben Droughns, Maurice Morris, Jonathan Stewart, LeGarrette Blount and LaMichael James. Over the past six years, Oregon has led the Pac12 conference in rushing. For five consecutive years, the Ducks have been inside the top six nationwide. And if his players looking good on the field wasn’t enough, Campbell makes sure he looks good off of it. Before every game, Campbell makes his way through the Walk of Champions in the Moshofsky Center, and can be seen during pregame on the field in any combination of his three-piece suits, jewelry, fedoras, and snazzy shoes. On Saturdays, he is the best-dressed man in a sea of 60,000 at Autzen. Don’t tell the Nike uniform designers that. While there is a lot that sets Campbell apart as a coach, it it his process that truly make him

exceptional. He molds young men into running backs, but he takes pride in his relationship with his players and making them better beyond the field of play. He is a builder of men.

Campbell began his career working with football backfields at UCLA where he was a starting fullback. Campbell graduated in 1973 and took the running backs coaching job at Oregon in 1983. “The feeling to me now is pretty much the same it was when I came here 30 years ago,” Campbell says. “I think I enjoy it more now though. I’m rooted here, and it is a feeling that I have really put in my time and I am going to keep going until it is not fun anymore. And because of our success, it has been more fun than ever.” Oregon’s recent national relevance comes on the heels, or more fittingly, shoulders, of the more physical, bruising running scheme first promoted by Droughns and Morris. Now, heralded for their speed, the Ducks’ success comes more on the toes of tailbacks, ball-carriers who weigh in at less than 200 lbs. LaMichael James, Kenjon Barner and De’Anthony Thomas embody the notion that speed kills, with James leaving Oregon as the school’s all-time leading rusher and a recordholder for almost all things on the ground. All of his accolades and triumphs came under the tutelage of Campbell. “I try to do the best job I can in getting the players we have available to be the best they can be, and that goes all the way back to 1983, when we weren’t winning a lot of games but we still prided ourselves on being the best we could be,” Campbell says. In a game where the success of those you oversee is the greatest indicator of the quality of your work, it is hard not to attribute Oregon’s transformation to Campbell. His achievements in recruiting players, becoming close with them and improving them over a span of 30

years are unparalleled. But Campbell is quick to deflect the praise. “I don’t think of myself as being responsible for these guys’ success, but the thing that gives me pride is when I teach them something in practice or teach them technique, and then I see them in a game doing those things,” Campbell says. “That is what makes me pound my chest, and I feel good about that.”

Coach Cam, as the players refer to him, holds a bond with his players that makes him a favorite among those he educates. “Coach Cam is like my dad away from home,” says starting tailback Kenjon Barner. ”Without the advice and help he has given me, I wouldn’t be the same.” “It is special to be a part of these guys’ lives, but it is more special for the ones that go on and are successful in life, not just in football,” Campbell says. “We are builders of men and I want to see those guys become good men and guys who can function in society and go on to have some success.” When asked what is the most important technique or lesson he aims to bestow upon pupils, his answer wasn’t speed improvement or vision in the hole. It wasn’t how to block or slip free for a pass. “Integrity. I want them to have great integrity,” Campbell says. “I want them to be guys that are responsible and accountable — accountable on the football team and in life.” After all the success Campbell has had as an assistant coach it is uncommon for him to not have taken another job. But he says despite entertaining offers, nothing would make him as happy as where he is now. “I am proud to be here,” Campbell says. “I have been here so long, I am Oregon.”

why the WILDCATS will beat the ducks Arizona is still feeling the sting of that 2009 loss, but

the Wildcats are coming off a victory over Oklahoma State that gave them confidence heading to Autzen. Each week during football season we will feature an essay from the opponent’s student newspaper on how Oregon will lose. This week’s edition is from Zack Rosenblatt, the sports editor at Arizona’s Daily Wildcat. In 2009, I was a freshman at Arizona. I was in Arizona Stadium when … well, you know the game. The Wildcats had the lead with the fourth quarter nearly over. This was the chance. The Wildcats were going to make it to the Rose Bowl for the first time in Arizona history. Let’s storm the field! Oops. The rest is history. Everybody in — and out of — Tucson, Ariz., knows how embarrassing it was for the UA. Oregon won, and Arizona has been mired in mediocrity ever since. Sure, the Wildcats made a bowl that season and in 2010, but they were destroyed in both games by a combined total of 59 points. Arizona was at the bottom of the Pac-12 barrel in 2010, losing to the likes of Colorado in a 4-8 season. No one shed a tear when Mike Stoops was let go. He wasn’t necessarily a bad coach, per se, but the team wasn’t getting any better, and he was never a great fit in a college town like Tucson anyway. When Matt asked me to write something about why Arizona will beat Oregon on Saturday, my first reaction was … well, they won’t. Oregon’s offense is just too good. De’Anthony Thomas is the most unique, athletic weapon out of the backfield I have seen in my 21 years of existence. Kenjon Barner is no schlub either. I don’t know much about quarterback Marcus Mariota, but UA head coach Rich Rodriguez has raved about him, and LaMichael James tweeted he’ll be the best quarterback in the history of the UO. Arizona’s defense is small, young and thin. It’s linebacker corps is made up of an undersized middle linebacker, a walk-on who’s first name is Sir Thomas (yes, you read that right) and a converted safety. Despite all of that, upon further review I think Arizona can win this game. I don’t know

that they will, but they can. Against Oklahoma State, an admittedly inferior opponent to the Ducks, the Wildcats gave up 600 yards of offense — and won. Rodriguez has been preaching, at least to the media, all week about how much more talented Oregon is than Arizona. He even joked that he wished De’Anthony Thomas would leave for the NFL before Saturday. He said that Arizona needs to play a perfect game, and Oregon needs to make mistakes. I say, why not? Crazier things have happened. Stanford almost lost to San Jose State, then defeated the superior USC team with an offense even more talented than Oregon’s. Arizona’s offense is better than Stanford’s. This isn’t your same Wildcats the people of Eugene have witnessed the last few years. Rodriguez has instilled a new attitude, a new swagger into this team, this town. Ka’Deem Carey isn’t as well-known outside of Tucson just yet, but by the end of the year he will be thrown in the discussion for the nation’s best running backs. Austin Hill is eighth in the nation in receiving yards, and Dan Buckner is a talented wideout too. Then there’s Matt Scott. Rodriguez has coached Denard Robinson and Pat White. Rodriguez has called Scott one of (if not the) best competitor he’s ever coached. Not only is he fast (he’s gained 190 yards and two touchdowns on the ground thus far), but he’s a damn good thrower too. His 995 yards are 5th best in the nation. Will Arizona stop Thomas? No. Oregon will probably gain 200 plus yards on the ground. The Ducks might even score 50 points. But Arizona can score 51 points. Anyone who passes the magazine rack this week probably noticed that sophomore sensation De’Anthony Thomas slowed down long enough to pose for the front of Sports Illustrated. After the cover was revealed Tuesday night via the publication’s tablet app, the buzz at practice the rest of the week centered on the publicity. It was the first time an Oregon player has been featured on the cover since LaMichael James was during Oregon’s undefeated run to the BCS Championship Game. The 5-foot-9 running back from Los Angeles has been named to watch lists for the Walter Camp Award (player of the year), the Maxwell Award (player of the year) and the Paul Hornung Award (most versatile player) this year and has totaled 382 yards and seven touchdowns on just 24 touches from scrimmage. DAT has been popular at SI. The magazine was one of the first national publications to acknowledge Thomas’ legitimate shot at the Trophy this year. Sports Illustrated blogger Andy Staples even invented a “Yards-Per-Touch-O-Meter” to track Thomas’ absurd statistics. Head coach Chip Kelly had brief words about the cover Tuesday after practice: “It’s awesome. … We don’t make as big a deal out of it as you guys do.” Teammates and coaches have been more vocal in their support of Thomas. Running backs coach Gary Campbell praised Thomas’ humility in the face of the hype, and fellow back Byron Marshall agreed. “Just watch him as he

plays,” Marshall said. “He makes a big run, he doesn’t get up and celebrate, he hands the ball to the ref every time he scores, jumps up with his linemen for the blocks. He’s about the team; he doesn’t really let the hype get to his head.” The exposure could be crucial to the all-purpose threat’s Heisman campaign — especially just one week after Heisman-frontrunner Matt Barkley stumbled in the Trojans’ loss to the Stanford Cardinal. Perhaps the only downside to DAT’s appearance on the cover of the Sept. 24 issue is the SI Cover Jinx. Hundreds of athletes believe bad luck to befall the cover boy or cover girl, including NFL quarterback Kurt Warner, who once refused to pose for the magazine in his run-up to a Super Bowl. The same year Oregon State and Ken Simonton were listed as the No. 1 team in the nation before going 5-6. Oh, and the cover boy for the Aug. 17 issue earlier this year? Matt Barkley.
