Living with your closest BFF.
While you might think living with the person you spend the most time with might be a great idea, it often can backfire. You need some time away from your best friend, and living together could easily put distance in your relationship. Plus, you already know each other’s weaknesses, and you might get tired of them more quickly than with a stranger.
Being passive aggressive.
Living with your first roommate in your first place away from home can be a daunting experience. Most of us have lived with the same people for our entire childhoods, and suddenly rooming with new people in a new place will more than likely bring some new challenges. We talked to students on campus to figure out what their biggest roommate conflicts are and what advice they have for younger students.

The biggest thing we heard from students is that they regret not sitting down and having difficult conversations with their roommates. Most major conflicts arise when resentment or anger starts to build up inside. Annoyed that your roommate doesn’t do the dishes as often as you do? Tell them. Instead of letting any issues you have with your roommate fester, sit down with them one-on-one and let them know what you need from them. Your roommate can’t try to change their behavior if they are unaware of the issue. Oh, and don’t forget to use “I” rather than “you” to keep the communication open.
Unpacking your day onto them.
I’ll be the first to say that when I come home after a long day at school and work, it’s easy for me to use my roommate as a source to vent to. Chances are, your roommate had a difficult day, too. Try to be a sounding board for them in return or find other ways to de-stress before going home (hit the gym or go on a hike or listen to music). Your home should be a joyful, safe haven for you both.
Leaving responsibilities unclear.
Before you even get the keys to your new home, sit down with your future roomie and talk about which tasks work better for each of you. Make sure it’s clear right away who will be in charge of turning in rent, paying utilities and internet. This will save stress later on, I promise. Plus, it gives you an opportunity to discuss what you enjoy doing when it comes to chores. For instance, I’ll wash dishes all day if it means someone will take the trash out in return.
Being unaware of their schedule.
My roommate and I always check in with each other to see what our busy days will be, when we will be home super late, etc. Knowing when I’m going to be a ball of stress helps her know when she should pick up extra around the house. Likewise, when I know she’s having a difficult week, I’ll do extra or pick up a little gift for her. Just simply being aware of the other person’s daily workload and stress levels can help you become more empathetic and be a light to them, which will strengthen your friendship.

Sweet & Simple
Summer Cocktails It’s almost summer and you’ve decided to become a cocktail connoisseur. You’ve had it with the PBRs and the Three-Buck-Chucks of this world and you’ve decided to step up your drinking game. After all, it’s 2018 and you’re not getting any younger. Now seems as good a time as any to learn a thing or two about the actual adult drinking world. But where do you start? I suggest you begin with one or two of these perfect summer cocktails and go from there. Heck, maybe you’ll even invest in one of those swanky decorated bar carts that seem to be everywhere nowadays. Whatever you do, do it responsibly but be sure to have some fun and to enjoy these sweet little bits of alcoholic summer heaven. Words by Kelsey Tidball / Photo by Jonathan Roensch
Peach Bourbon Arnold Palmer
Everybody loves a classic Arnold Palmer, with the tartness of lemonade and the refreshing taste of iced tea, but this Arnold Palmer is all grown up. To make, simply take 1 part lemonade, 1 part iced tea, 1 teaspoon simple syrup, 1 ounce bourbon, ½ an ounce peach liqueur and some sliced peaches and mint for garnish. Mix it all together and enjoy a delicious adult twist on a summer classic.
Hawaiian Mimosas
If you can’t actually go to Hawaii this spring/ summer, why not bring Hawaii to you? This threeingredient cocktail takes champagne, one ounce of coconut rum and two ounces of pineapple juice. It’s delicious, refreshing, and perfect for Sunday brunch or an afternoon by the pool.
Grapefruit Lime Fizz
For this sweet and fun summer cocktail, you only need four ingredients. Put 1½ ounces of tequila, a dash of bitters and an ounce or two of fresh grapefruit juice into a cocktail shaker (if you don’t have one, check out my tip for diy-ing one below). Then shake it up, pour it into a cocktail glass, and fill out the rest of the glass with 7-UP.
DIY Cocktail Shaker
Believe it or not, you don’t need to buy a fancy cocktail shaker to make awesome James Bondesque cocktails at home. Simply use a mason jar. Take the lid and punch about half a dozen centimeter-wide holes on one side, then screw it back on and there you have it—a good-enough cocktail shaker that will totally serve your purpose.
Raspberry Sangria Punch
We all know sangria is a go-to spring/summer cocktail, but this recipe is also perfect to serve at a backyard barbecue, graduation party, or get together. To serve a group, you just need two bottles of white wine, ¾ of a cup Torani raspberry syrup, ½ cup rum, ½ cup peach schnapps, 1 package fresh raspberries, 3 sliced limes, 2 sliced oranges, 2 sliced lemons and 1 liter of sparkling water. Add ice as necessary and enjoy! Your guests will too.

Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the sun and a nice glass of wine with some friends and family. In Eugene, there are many different wineries to visit that are relaxing, refreshing and entertaining. I recommend these specific wineries for particular events and moods during this perfect spring weather in May.
Shared units available - $695
Casual & Simple If you do not want to travel far and simply want to enjoy wine tasting close by, the Fifth Street Public Market Tasting Room on 5th Avenue is the solution. It is a quaint tasting room that includes an outside patio and gorgeous inside setup. This taproom has a variety of selections like white and rose, pinot noir, pinot gris and red. So, if you are in the mood for a quick and relaxing spot, this will be the best place to visit.
Adventurous & Scenic If you are in the mood for a scenic view when sipping on wine, try Chateau Lorane right outside of Eugene. Your experience will include a gorgeous porch with the view of the river a few feet away with trees surrounding it. The rare selection of wines that this winery has created consists of Baco Noir, Leon Millet, Huxelrebe and many more. They also make wine out of fruits such as raspberries, wild blackberries, and huckleberries.

Big Crowds & Celebrations With graduation coming up, many families will be looking for places to take a day trip with family and friends. Sweet Cheeks Winery, located on Briggs Hill Road in Eugene, is a spacious vineyard with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. One thing that people love about this place is their snacks, like a charcuterie board. If you have a big group with you celebrating your graduation and want to meet up with more family and friends, I would highly recommend this one-of-akind winery.

Dear fellow graduates, I am an outgoing senior and every day feels like I pass a milestone. On Friday, May 18, I officially hit the one month mark. One month away from graduating and saying goodbye to the UO, my friends, my mentors and my undergraduate experience for good. On May 1, I officially committed to my graduate program at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. On June 20, I will officially move back home to live with my parents and work at a local winery until I finally take off to Boston. I have to figure out how to move my stuff. Stuff that I have acquired over the last four years of living on my own. Stuff that I share with my roommate who also happens to be one of my best friends of almost 18 years. I have to figure out how to temporarily move back into my childhood bedroom without feeling like I’m moving backwards, without feeling like I’ve entered some kind of post-grad purgatory. Saying goodbye to a season of life is always a difficult thing. I have come to regard this period of my life as a period of constant revolution and change. For the past four years, I have never truly been planted. I have moved every year since moving out of my parents’ house and it seems like I’ve had new friends, new goals, and a new sense of myself every few months since. In some ways, that constant change has made this the most exciting and intensely progressive season yet. But now, I am looking down the barrel of the largest and most daunting bit of change that I’ve ever had to face. In August, I will move across the country. I will begin classes at a campus I have never set foot on, I will move to an apartment I have never seen and I will introduce myself to roommates I have only met online. All of it is as scary as it’s exciting, and I don’t know if I can’t wait to go or if I’d be okay if I never left this place at all. There really is no way to adequately prepare for this kind of move, but as far as change goes, I sometimes think I’d rather take a huge change over a small one. The undergraduate season is over, whether we like it or not, and the only thing that matters now is how we handle that. Whether we are moving across the country or across the state, our lives are going to be completely altered come this time next year. We may not even recognize ourselves on the other end of this season, and, odds are, we will be even more changed by the end of the next. This is the rhythm of life. My advice to those of you grappling with or undergoing a similar kind of change? Stick with it. Say “yes” to the scary and the unfamiliar and go for it, even though sometimes I’m sure you wish you didn’t have to. I sometimes marvel at just how easy it is to say “yes” right now. I have a feeling it will never be quite so easy to say “yes” ever again, so now is the time. Trust me. Make sure those friends and roommates and mentors know how much they have meant to you. Make sure they know that you wouldn’t be going where you’re going without them. Enjoy every last moment of the remainder of your undergraduate career, but keep the future in mind. Don’t be afraid to be excited for the next chapter. Don’t forget to be proud of who you are now (especially compared to who you were then) and of where you are going. I know it’s scary, and even sad, to be moving on, but if you have to move on, why not move on with the most enthusiasm, joy, presence and pride that you can muster? Go forth, class of 2018. I am right there with you and so is each of your classmates and peers. It’s an exciting time. We can totally do this.
Good luck, Kelsey Tidball PA G E 1 0

Sell your stuff instead of storing it. Paying for a storage unit is not worth it. Keep the truly important things, but, if you can, sell the rest before you leave Eugene. Make lists. Make a list of the things you need to move, the things you’ll need to buy when you get there, and the things you’ll want to leave at home with your parents for safe keeping. Lists will become your best friend, even if only for getting the right size U-haul. Craigslist is your friend. Put all of that unused furniture on Craigslist now. Everyone is moving/ preparing to move and looking for affordable furniture. Sell it now. And as always, be safe when giving out your information online. Ask Mom and Dad to help. You may be 22 and a full-fledged adult, but we all need a little help now and then. Don’t be afraid to ask for it. That goes for your friends, too. Enjoy the next month to the fullest. Try your best to forget about all of the logistics and just enjoy it. I know it’ll be hard, but you really will not want to look back and have regrets. Make a Pinterest board of things to do in your new home. My board is called “Boston Bound” and I have posted everything from articles about “The Best Lobster Rolls in Boston” to helpful hints for getting along with new roommates. Start a new journal. With a new move comes a new opportunity for self-exploration. Start a new journal for this new chapter. You’ll be happy to have your thoughts and stories all in one place. Make sure to record your thoughts about the preparation, too. Start the journal now.
Dealing with Words and Photo by Keven Salazar
With summer getting closer, it becomes difficult for students to focus on school, especially for seniors who struggle with senioritis. Senioritis is a term used to describe the feeling of being unmotivated in school as graduation becomes everpresent. Some of the symptoms include a lack of motivation, as well as experiencing mental fatigue. The senior life is a busy and stressful one. Big projects seem to come out of nowhere with high expectations to meet, not to mention the pressure of job searching and a never-ending wave of deadlines that hit you over and over again until you find yourself floating in the middle of it all. Be prepared to grind out your last couple weeks in college because it is important to finish strong and not fall behind at the last minute. So what are ways of combating senioritis and staying productive or at least dealing with it? A way of combating senioritis and dealing with the stresses of senior year is to exercise. Take a short walk or have a full workout session. Studies have shown that there is a correlation between physical health and mental health. Early morning workouts or late night sessions do the trick. Remember to get enough sleep. Sticking to a sleeping schedule will help build a rhythm which in turn can lead to more productivity. Organizing your day by scheduling assignments on your calendar is a good system to follow. But remember that
being overly ambitious with your workload can be a set up for failure. Like the saying goes, people overestimate what they can accomplish in a day and underestimate what they can accomplish in a year. In other words, don’t take on too much on at once. Choose one or two big assignments to work on during the day and do those first before any smaller assignments. A good system is called the Pomodoro Technique. Using the Pomodoro Technique allows you to set up a timer in order to break down your work load into intervals. This system allows for short breaks in between sessions and longer breaks in between a number of sessions. The timer can be found at tomato-timer.com. We have a limited amount of energy in a day, so it’s probably not the best idea to tackle your biggest project around 10 p.m. after a long day, unless you work best at night. Use your energy wisely. Being able to organizer your day and have direction is very important to get through that feeling of senioritis and stay productive. Now, to end on a positive note. Senioritis is normal and there are many who have gone through what you’re going through and come out on top. It’s important to take care of yourself while not letting senioritis get in the way of you and school. You will pass your classes, you will get that diploma, and you will find a job you love! Good luck!

HOUSES DUPLEXES APARTMENTS Words by Kara Fagan The highest turnover time for housing companies in Eugene is summer, and we all know that the end of the term and sunny days are right around the corner. Don’t jump for the floaties yet, though: you still have to move. Finals look like a cakewalk compared to picking a housing situation that works. Take our quiz to see which housing type will work best for you next year.
LET’S GET TO THE BASICS: ROOMMATES. CAN’T GET ENOUGH, OR ARE YOU READY FOR SOME “ME-TIME”?
THE GREAT OUTDOORS — HOW CRUCIAL IS A BACKYARD FOR THE ULTIMATE DREAM HOUSE?
IT’S LIKE LIVING WITH MY BEST FRIENDS — LOVE IT!
YOUR ALLERGENS WOULD EAT YOU ALIVE IF YOU DARE STEP OUTSIDE IN THE SUMMER, NOT IMPORTANT.
THEY’RE OKAY, YOU CAN MANAGE WITH ONE OR TWO. YOU’VE SEEN TOO MANY OVERFLOWING DIRTY DISH SINKS, HARD PASS.
ABSOLUTELY KEY, WHERE ELSE WOULD YOU HAVE YOUR LUAU-THEMED PARTIES? NOT MAKE-OR-BREAK, BUT BBQS ARE PRETTY FUN SOMETIMES.
PARKING: YAY OR NAY?
HOW MUCH SPACE DO YOU NEED?
YOU JUST NEED A BIKE RACK AND YOU’LL BE GOOD TO GO.
JUST A BEDROOM AND AT LEAST ONE TOILET TO USE, AND YOU’RE A HAPPY CAMPER.
A FULL-BLOWN GARAGE IS YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCE FOR STASHING YOUR LIMITEDEDITION GEO METRO.
YOU’VE AMASSED A LOT OF STUFF OVER THE YEAR, AND ARE READY TO EXPAND: AT LEAST A THOUSAND SQUARE FOOTAGE OR BUST.
A SPOT WOULD BE NICE, BUT YOU HAVE NO QUALMS WITH OFF-STREET OR ON-STREET, IT’S ALL THE SAME.
YOU’RE READY TO UPGRADE FROM THE DORMS, BUT AREN’T LOOKING FOR A MANSION QUITE YET.
HOW ABOUT PETS? HAVING HAIR ON EVERYTHING YOU OWN? NO THANK YOU. YOU HAVE TWO DOGS, SIX CATS AND ALSO A FIFTY GALLON FISH TANK THAT NEEDS IT’S OWN ROOM. LOVE THE IDEA OF A HOUSE CAT, BUT YOU’RE NOT QUITE READY FOR THE FARM LIFE.
IF YOU ANSWERED MOSTLY A’S: APARTMENT/CONDO
You’re a social person who loves living with other people and wouldn’t mind the busy chatter of a big apartment complex. Dividing up chores between roommates, finding a bike rack and sharing a bathroom are small potatoes and you love the sweet amenities they typically come with — apartment living is the life for you.
IF YOU ANSWERED MOSTLY B’S: HOUSE
You’ve been through the ringer with tiny apartments or loud neighbors: it’s time to move on to a new house and have your own front door. Plenty of square footage for customization, a lack of roommates and often times fantastic neighborhoods are just a few perks of making the switch to a stand-alone house. Maintaining your own space, a luscious backyard and most importantly some peace and quiet is important to you in your living search, and a single family home or studio is perfect.
IF YOU ANSWERED MOSTLY C’S: DUPLEX/TOWNHOUSE
You’re ready to upgrade from smaller spaces and big buildings, but have no qualms with sharing a space or two and paying a lower price tag. Duplexes and townhouses are often split down the middle or separated between floors: you get your very own space minus a neighbor and have all the basic perks of house-living as well. They are generally more affordable than family homes and often have shared spaces like yards or parking garages, which is exactly the amount of space you’re looking for in a new home — not too much, not too little.
