Living with roommates can either be a pleasant experience or a complete disaster. Tensions can rise, and you have to learn to compromise with each other in ways you never expected. It can be important to find ways to bond with each other or simply hang out casually. Here are some fun and entertaining options that my roommates and I enjoy occasionally that you should try too!
WINE AND CHEESE NIGHT
Almost every Monday, my four roommates and I hold a wine, cheese and movie night. We make a quick pit stop to Safeway and buy an array of cheese (Gouda is our go-to) and our favorite red wine (Barefoot is a great wine that’s under 15 dollars.) Examples of shows and movies that we watch are Entourage, Californication, Unreal and Limitless. Approximate Cost Barefoot Wine: $10 Gouda: $6
COOKING COMPETITION
When many college students attempt to cook, it can end up in disaster. This is what happens in our house on the daily. We decided to take a night to do a “tasty competition.” First, we buy all the ingredients individually for something like chocolate cake, cookies or banana bread. After about an hour of cooking, we have a huge potluck and see whose turned out the best according to taste and presentation. Even if the results are a complete failure, it’s an amusing way to chill with everyone in the house. Pro tip: Set aside a budget for each person. My roommates and I spent around 15 dollars each for the dessert we chose.
GAME NIGHT
Game night can be done at any point in the week when you and your roommates’ schedules align. Try games like Heads Up (free on your IPhone), What Do You Meme (great game if you’re an Instagram lover), Cards Against Humanity (very inappropriate, but very hilarious), Fibbage and even a good old-fashioned puzzle. Invite some other friends over and gather on the couch with some wine. Approximate Cost at Target What Do You Meme: $29.99 Cards Against Humanity: $25
PICNIC OR HIKE
Once the sun comes out in Eugene, the best way to hang with your roommates is to get out and do something active. This could be a hike, picnic, or a trip to a waterfall or the hot springs. The five of us pack a potluck and head to Hendricks Park and spend about an hour chilling and talking. If you don’t want to go too far, there’s always the option of going to Beer Garden, Ninkasi Brewing Company or a local Arcade for a quicker group outing that still brings good times.
BEACH AND ICE CREAM DAY
When the weather’s warm, head to the beach where you can sit on the sand and enjoy some ice cream. In the past, my roommates and I planned a beach day and took a road trip to the Oregon Coast. We even stopped for lunch in Florence. They had small boutiques and fantastic restaurants with a variety of food choices. We also ate at a small frozen yogurt place when we were heading back to Eugene. If you don’t have enough time to drive an hour away, you could have an ice cream afternoon at local places like Prince Pucklers, Yogurt Extreme or Sweet Life Petite.

Many students know by now that entering college basically means entering a life of debt. We find ourselves overspending and fail to find deals when it comes to apartment items, food, school supplies and exciting things outside of school like concerts and other events. All of these costs tend to build up as you become an upperclassman, and start living on your own in an apartment or house. You may wonder where can you find cheap items to spruce up your living space.

BRING Recycling is the perfect solution. BRING is a local used items store that carries recycled goods at an extremely affordable price. Students and community members can come buy all different sorts of materials for the DIY project of their choosing, including but not limited to: tables, tile, sinks, paint, jars, tools, baskets and a massive array of simple objects. This is an excellent option for college students because it helps you create unique apartment decorations in a way that is affordable and beneficial to the environment. BRING is located at 4446 Franklin Blvd. and is open Monday through Sunday from 9 to 5 p.m.
Words by Michaela Barnes While traditionally a layered drink, the upside down Caramel Macchiato is a delicious sweet treat. All you need is four ingredients and to follow six easy steps. Grab a coffee/espresso base, milk, vanilla syrup and caramel sauce and get to brewing. Approximate Cost Drapery hooks: $0.25 Mason jars: $0.50 Wood: $2 Steel duct clamps: $0.25 Hammer: $2 Screwdriver: $1 An example of a DIY project that BRING can help you create is a mason jar wall organizer. You will need to buy three mason jars, a piece of long wood, six drapery hooks, three steel duct clamps, a hammer and a screwdriver at BRING’s recycled goods store. To start, you will need to place the steel duct clamps over the top of the mason jars. Then, place two drapery hooks in between each mason jar and the clamps and tighten the clamp with a screwdriver as tight as possible. The third step is to hammer the drapery hooks that are connected to the jars into the top of the piece of wood. I would also recommend painting the wood to make it more appealing. Once you are finished, you will have your very own mason jar wall organizer that you can fill with flowers, bathroom supplies, school supplies or makeup brushes.
Step 1
Heat milk to your desired temperature (unless iced).
Step 2
Begin brewing your preferred coffee or pulling your shots.
Step 3
Next, include three to four pumps of vanilla syrup in the bottom of your cup. Add more or less depending on your preferred sweetness.
Step 4
Pour coffee or shots a third of the way into your cup.
Step 5
Pour milk the rest of the way up.
BEDROOM MIRROR
Step 6
Top drink with caramel drizzle.
Another fun DIY idea is a bedroom mirror. Glue around 100 painted kabob skewers to the back of a circular mirror to create a sunset look. You could also grab pieces of tile from the store and glue them around the edges of a rectangular mirror for a different design. These are just a few examples of things you can make on your own at a very reasonable price. So head on over to BRING and start your very own simple project that will make your apartment much more cozy and homey for spring.
Coffee Bar Menu You can add a chic chalkboard menu to your coffee bar for under $25. You might even be inspired to try out some new recipes! To make your own DIY chalkboard menu, here’s what you’ll need: any mirror of your choice (price varies), painter’s tape ($4), chalkboard paint ($6) and cardboard ($2) Step 1: Lay down your cardboard workspace. Step 2: Cover your mirror border with painter’s tape. Step 3: Paint your mirror in one even coat, let dry and repeat. Step 4: Take off the painter’s tape slowly. Decorate your menu with your favorite drink recipes. If you don’t have any, try out the yummy and affordable recipe to the right. Fabric Softener
While they may seem like a luxury, nothing is better than pulling lint-free and clean smelling clothes or towels out of the dryer. When it comes to using a public laundry service especially, these little sheets or tubs will be a life saver for achieving clean, fresh linens. Don’t be scared to branch out with the fun scents, either — you seem like a Hawaiian Breeze. Downy and Bounce are two quality brands that are popular for their results and the low price tag.
(Good) Toilet Paper
Toilet paper is a no-brainer essential that the average person prefers to have on hand in their new home, but it’s an easy thing to walk right past in the aisle. Don’t forget to pick up a value pack, and if you can, really splurge on yourself here. Two-ply compared to ultra thick and fluffy will make the world of a difference in your bathroom experience. Charmin is a classic brand renowned for their cushy softness and getting proper bang for your buck.
Something to Clean With
It’s certainly not very high on the priority list, but maintaining a clean home or freshening up for spring can hugely impact your mood and the way you feel about your environment. Investing in a Swiffer product or even just a closet broom and dustpan will make SundayCleaning-Day that much easier of a process.
Words by Skyla Patton
You finally did it: you moved out of your parents house and are ready to exemplify viva la vida. Moving can seem pretty daunting, but with the right friends and proper feng shui in mind, you’ll be good to go. However, preparing to live on your own isn’t always as easy as it seems. Don’t be the guy who sits down to “break in the house” and realizes they’re out of toilet paper all too late. Check out these apartment essentials that you don’t want to miss during your first shopping trip.

Towels
It’s hard to imagine a worse situation than taking your first hot, steamy shower to wash off the exhaustion of moving and reaching out to an empty towel rack. Not only are towels important to everyday life, good quality towels are not hard to come by and will make a big difference. Make sure your towels are cotton and nice and thick to get the most wonderful after-shower experience possible.
Ice Cube Trays
Whether you’re a crushed ice or a cubed ice kind of person, having a few trays ready to go in the freezer is a huge help in a lot of different ways. Reusable ice trays can help reduce trash leftover from bags of ice, and you never know when you’ll need a good cube for something. If you want to add a little extra fun, check out Amazon for fun shapes and sizes — nothing shows proper razzle dazzle more than ice cubes shaped like sharks.
Basic Kitchen Utensils
Even if you’re not usually an at-home-chef, having the proper tools and equipment to cook up basic meals is crucial in feeling like an adult. If you ever want to host dinner parties or make something nice for your mother when she visits, believe me, a plastic fork and a butterknife won’t do the trick. Pick up a kitchen set from Target or Walmart and have at least one or two of the basic items: a whisk, spatulas, maybe even a few good knives can complete your kitchen collection and not break the bank.
First aid kit
Now is the time to reflect on every time you hurt yourself during childhood years and your mom miraculously had the cure ready to go in her purse. While you may not live an especially reckless life, it never hurts to have a few medical supplies stashed away somewhere. Bandages, neosporin, gauze and maybe even a few types of over the counter pain relievers are standard pantry must-haves.
Hangers
And lots of them, too! One of the first steps into adulthood is realizing that most things need to be hung up to dry properly and to look as they’re meant to when you wear them. Blouses, button ups, even most types of pants will look fresher and less wrinkled when they’re stored properly in a closet rather than shoved into a drawer. Pick up a few packs of variety hangers from Walmart, or if you wanna get fancy, head to Target for fabric-coated hangers for extra secure storage. Bonus tip: some stores will give away hangers for free instead of throwing them away, so it never hurts to ask.
Oven mitts
This is another classic “didn’t know I needed it until I didn’t have one” house item that is easy to forget on the shopping list. You may have gotten a few hand me down baking sheets or microwaveable bowls, but they will both be rendered useless when you try to free hand it and wind up with first-degree burns. Most stores (yes, the dollar store!) will have at least a few in the home department, but try checking out Amazon for fun patterns or a design to match your decor.
Extension Cord
Few things are more frustrating than having a lamp just barely not reach where it’s meant to be or having awkward cords strung around your house because your landlord decided two outlets was sufficient enough. An extension cord is a long-lasting purchase and can make a huge difference in not only the appearance of your home but also the efficiency of it’s design. Always remember to read the instructions, they can differ from brand to brand and power strips are easy to overload, so be safe!

Meals
Are you having trouble cooking for yourself now that you’re living the college lifestyle? The dorm life is many things, but it’s not
an experience that lends itself to independent or healthy eating habits. You’ll soon learn that having a few simple recipes in your back pocket is essential when living without a kitchen. Here’s a list of meals that can be easily be whipped up in a dorm room with just a microwave and a few simple ingredients. Words by Keven Salazar
1
Oatmeal
All you will need for this is oatmeal, a banana, a bit of honey and some granola. This recipe is perfect for any college student on a budget, and it should run you less than a dollar per serving. Oatmeal is also a great source of fiber and is super delicious!
Steps:
1) Place half a cup of oatmeal in a microwaveable bowl and add half cup of milk. 2) Microwave for two minutes. Take out and stir. 3) To sweeten things up, add some banana, a bit of honey and sprinkle granola on top.
2 3 4 5
Parfait
Parfaits are an easy on-the-go snack or breakfast that can be easily made under two minutes. All you’ll need is two cups of vanilla yogurt, one cup of granola, a couple strawberries and a banana. It’s a simple healthy food and is great for snacking on a budget, running you about a dollar fifty per serving.
Steps:
1) Place a cup of vanilla yogurt in a cup. 2) Add half a cup of granola, sliced strawberries and half the banana (sliced). 3) Repeat the process by adding a second cup of vanilla yogurt, and the rest of the topping.
Quesadilla
A perfect food to quiet down your midnight munchies or to grab while heading out the door, quesadillas are quick and easy to make. Not to mention they’re bomb! (Adding pre-cooked chicken is optional and highly recommended). They’re cheaper than lunch and a cheese and tortilla pack can last you for weeks!
Steps:
1) Slice cheese and spread on a flat tortilla. Place another tortilla on top to cover the cheese. 2) Microwave for a minute. Be careful when taking out, it’s hot! 3) You can also accompany with diced tomatoes and avocado slices.
Wrap
Wraps are always a great food to have when you want to eat during that short time between classes. Add lettuce, diced tomato, sliced avocado and your choice of ham. Accompanied with chips and your favorite drink, this will make for a great quick lunch.
Steps:
1) First, throw in a bacon strip inside microwave for a minute. 2) While that’s cooking, take out a spinach tortilla wrap and spread ranch on it. Take bacon out. 3) Add lettuce, bacon, diced tomato, sliced avocado and your choice of ham to complete the wrap. Fold it into a burrito form and your good to go!
Bagel Sandwich
Turn a boring plain bagel with cream cheese into a quick and delicious breakfast in just a couple steps. Then add ham, sliced tomato and avocado slides. Simple, easy and healthy!
Steps:
1) First, take a bagel and spread cream cheese on the bottom half. 2) Then add ham, sliced tomato and avocado slides. 3) Place second half on bagel bread on top, and enjoy!
