LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT The past year has been a real joy for me as I have had the privilege and opportunity to get to know our Clinic staff, donors and community participants in our 10th year of operation. What I have witnessed makes me even more excited about our future and the ways in which we can deepen our impact in the communities we serve. Since we opened the Clinic in 2008, we have not accepted a dime in support from our patients or any government agencies. Our board and our medical professionals, as good stewards of the resources entrusted to the Clinic, are constantly looking for ways to stretch our dollars in order to provide the finest care to our grateful patients. At our Silver Chalice Awards Dinner in October, we heard the testimonial of a grateful patient who proclaimed, “Dr. Wallace, you saved my life!” As I remarked that evening, we are hitting our stride. The future of the Clinic has never been brighter. I have known this organization is special ever since I joined its board some nine years ago. I have seen the phenomenal growth in the number of patients served, our hours of operation (now open five days/week!), the specialized medicine our doctors bring to the Clinic, and our volunteer hours. We are poised to bring quality medicine into the greater East Bay community with our new mobile clinic. I have seen first-hand the respect and care our medical professionals extend to the uninsured, often with a collegial approach to diagnosis and treatment which can’t be found anywhere else, at any price. That’s the difference we are making 30,000 times over, thanks to your support. I hope you will take the time to read through our annual report to learn more about the lives you have enriched. I am very proud of the accomplishments that we’ve achieved over this past year, and also how we have faced challenges together. The Clinic is a remarkable community of many different and talented individuals. Thank you for making our work possible and for partnering with us to enhance the health of our lords, the sick and the poor.

John P. Christian, KM Board President

ABOUT THE CLINIC HISTORY Founded in 2008, the Order of Malta Clinic of Northern California is a nonprofit medical clinic located in downtown Oakland, California, adjacent to Cathedral of Christ the Light. The Clinic provides free, on-site preventative health care services and treatment to uninsured and low-income patients – no questions asked. While the average span of faith-based medical clinics is just 2 ½ years, our clinic has been in operation for more than a decade and continues to grow in services, number of patients served and geographic reach. We are dedicated to healing and helping the Bay Area’s uninsured communities, within an atmosphere of trust, compassion, and state-of-the-art facilities and care.

MISSION Our mission is simple: “Upholding human dignity and caring for people in need.” We are honored to continue, on a daily basis, the legacy of the Order of Malta’s service to the poor and infirm, which dates to the Middle Ages. Here in Northern California, the Order of Malta has a distinguished history of supporting and helping our neediest neighbors.

SERVICES We offer comprehensive preventative health care services and treatment, and patients can schedule an appointment with clinic staff and specialists. Our physicians and nurses offer diagnosis and treatment in the following: _• _• _• _•

Primary Care Cardiology Oncology Neurology

• • • •

Gynecology Dermatology Podiatry Otorhinolaryngology

FREE FOR PATIENTS We believe everyone deserves high-quality medical care, regardless of ability to pay. For that reason, all services are free of charge. • All medical services are free and no one is turned away for lack of funds. • Laboratory tests, X-rays, mammograms, Pap tests and immunizations are provided at no cost to patients.

STAFF Our staff is comprised of more than 50 volunteer physicians and nurses. Our experienced team has worked for some of the most renowned medical institutions and healthcare providers including: • University of California, San Francisco • Kaiser Permanente • Sutter Health

“WE HAVE AN INCREDIBLE STAFF, AS WELL AS MANY WONDERFUL DOCTORS AND NURSES WHO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME – IT’S A GREAT EXAMPLE OF TEAMWORK. NOTHING WOULD BE ACCOMPLISHED OR BE EFFECTIVE HERE WITHOUT THEIR GENEROSITY AND THEIR COMMITMENT TO HELPING THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST.” – DR. VONA LORENZANA MEDICAL DIRECTOR, ORDER OF MALTA CLINIC OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA 5

2018 AT A GLANCE: CELEBRATING A DECADE OF SUCCESS A Knight for Champions: Silver Chalice Awards Dinner October 2, 2018 It truly was a “Knight for Champions,” as more than 300 guests came together to celebrate 10 years of exceptional medical care by our Clinic, made possible by our generous donors, physicians, nurses, and community partners. The gala, held at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, honored major Clinic supporters Deb O’Hara-Rusckowski, DM and Stephen Rusckowski, Chairman and CEO of Quest Diagnostics. The successful event will help us achieve our near-term goal of offering patient care five days a week, enabling us to keep up with demand for our services from an everwidening community of uninsured individuals. Our 2019 event promises even more surprises.

“THIS EVENT HAS GROWN IN STATURE AND IMPACT EACH YEAR, TOUCHING MANY MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY WHO HAVE NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE WITH THE ORDER OF MALTA OR OUR CLINIC. WE WANT TO EXPAND OUR WORK AND INSPIRE MORE SUPPORT, SO WE CAN HELP EVEN MORE PEOPLE RECEIVE QUALITY HEALTH CARE REGARDLESS OF ABILITY TO PAY.” – SARA CUMBELICH, DM, EVENT CHAIR AND CLINIC BOARD MEMBER

Pre-Investiture and Mobile Clinic Debut June 20, 2018 With increasing demand for our services, and with many of our patients facing transportation challenges, we are taking our services “on the road” in Contra Costa and Alameda counties. The 36-foot mobile unit is equipped with a medical examination room and storage bays for large-volume supplies, and showcases the recognizable Order of Malta branding. The mobile unit received an inaugural blessing from Fr. Eric Hollas, OSB, and a warm welcome from supporters and friends, who gathered to officially inaugurate the 10th anniversary year with this great new addition to our service offering.

"FOR YEARS, WE’VE SHARED A VISION FOR BRINGING HEALTH SERVICES TO MORE BAY AREA PATIENTS, MANY OF WHOM ARE UNABLE TO VISIT OUR CLINIC IN DOWNTOWN OAKLAND. THIS NEW MOBILE UNIT MAKES THAT DREAM A REALITY." — JOHN CHRISTIAN, KM, BOARD PRESIDENT 8

Podiatry Event with St. Vincent de Paul September 19, 2018 Order of Malta Clinic of Northern California Board members, Clinic physicians and staff partnered with St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County to bring podiatry treatments to Oakland’s homeless and uninsured. The podiatry clinic provided an opportunity to debut the Mobile Clinic at St. Vincent de Paul’s facility, and connected the Clinic’s team with even more deserving members of the uninsured community.

"IF YOU’RE UNINSURED IT’S REALLY HARD BECAUSE YOU CAN DIE IF YOU DON’T TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET. AT THE STAGE THAT I WAS AT, MY FEET WERE REALLY BAD, BUT THEY ARE GETTING BETTER." — MARCUS TURNER, PODIATRY PATIENT
