It’s easy when thinking of baroque music to lapse into the assumption that it all sounds pretty much the same.

Quite pretty. Nice. Unthreatening. This festival sets out to shatter your assumptions and show the breadth and variety of baroque music.

It showcases music written for specific groups of instruments, places secular music against sacred, and ceremonial against dance music. Come to a concert or two and you’ll soon see that far from being just nice, baroque music can be thrilling, angry, tragic and touching.

You can also get involved and play the music yourself – if you’re an amateur musician, join us for our Baroque from Scratch event, or if you fancy exercising your vocal chords then come down on Saturday and tickle your tonsils with some Purcell choruses. And if you have a noisy toddler, then our always popular tots events on Saturday morning are the perfect way to unleash their musical talents!

Baroque from Scratch The festival kicks off with a chance for amateur adult musicians to play Handel’s Water Music and Fireworks Music, being rehearsed by and playing alongside OAE musicians.

Tickets: ÂŁ9.50 Session lasts two hours including a short break. The session is led by OAE Leader Margaret Faultless.

A rare chance to hear baroque chamber music for flute, oboe, trumpet, violins and continuo, written by some major names from the baroque era. Concert lasts one hour and is introduced from the stage by musicians.

Contrasting with the earlier concert, this programme features music for strings from 17th and 18th century Italy, and concludes with the famous La Folia (madness) variations. You’ll be humming the tune for days! Concert lasts one hour and is introduced from the stage by musicians.

The baroque oboe first appeared in the French court in the mid-17th century, where it was called a hautbois, and here it is contrasted with the tones of the flute and recorder in a programme of music by German and English composers – including a particular curiosity – William Williams’ Sonata in Imitation of Birds. Concert lasts one hour and is introduced from the stage by musicians.

OAE Tots: Workshop This workshop for under 5’s and their parents is an exciting, involving and fun way to introduce toddlers to the joy of music. Bang a drum, shake a maraca and ting a triangle to Purcell’s wonderfully magical music from The Fairy Queen.

Share the fun afterwards with everyone at the following toddlers concert.

Suitable for ages 4-6.

Sing Baroque!

Join director Robert Howarth for this special workshop, during which you’ll learn and be coached in choruses from Purcell operas including The Fairy Queen and Dido & Aeneas, together with sacred works. Suitable for all aspiring baroque singers, no experience necessary! Workshop lasts 2 hours including a short break.

Saturday comes to a close with this rousing programme of music which includes music from Henry Purcell’s musictheatre masterpiece, The Fairy Queen, in which rousing dances collide with tender moving arias. A gutsy concerto grosso from Handel starts the programme which concludes with three arias, culminating with the furious beauty of Da Tempeste from his opera Julius Caesar.
