Market Overview Total Tourist Arrivals as of 30 Sep 2026

The Maldives has welcomed over one and half million tourist arrivals in September 2026 within the same period as the previous year. As of 30 September 2026, the destination has recorded a total of 1,603,021 tourist arrivals. The current arrival trends reflect the continued resilience of the country’s tourism sector, despite a 3.4% decline in arrivals compared to 2025, amid regional geopolitical tensions, including the Middle East conflicts, which disrupted international travel patterns, affected air connectivity, and resulted in temporary flight suspensions. As regional conditions improved and flight operations resumed, tourism demand began to show signs of recovery, with further growth expected during the festive season as travel activity gained momentum. This positive outlook reflects sustained global interest in the Maldives, supported by strong collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders and continued efforts to strengthen the destination’s competitiveness, enhance visitor experiences, and maintain its position as a leading global tourism destination. The Maldives continues to benefit from a diverse international visitor base, with key source markets contributing consistently to overall arrival performance. China continues to rank as the Maldives’ largest source market, contributing 300,977 tourists arrivals to date. Russia follows in second place with 229,236 tourist arrivals, while the United Kingdom remains third with 119,968 tourist arrivals. The top three rankings remain unchanged from 2025, reflecting the continued strength and stability of these key source markets. Other prominent source markets contributing to the Maldives’ tourism performance include Germany, Italy, India, Australia, France, the United States, and Spain. The continued strength of these markets demonstrates the destination’s diverse international reach and its ability to attract travellers from a wide range of regions. Strong demand from these markets remains a key factor supporting the overall growth and stability of the tourism sector.

Airlines Connectivity as of 30 September 2026

Improved air connectivity continues to play a vital role in supporting the Maldives’ tourism growth. Seasonal flight operations, increased frequencies, new routes, and strengthened partnerships with international carriers continue to enhance accessibility from key source markets. Seasonal services by airlines such as Edelweiss Air and Condor are ongoing, while French Bee is scheduled to commence flights to the Maldives in December. Additionally, VietJet Air is also set to begin operations from December, further strengthening connectivity and providing greater access for travelers from key markets. As global travel patterns continue to evolve, maintaining strong air connectivity remains essential to sustaining visitor arrivals, supporting tourism growth, and expanding the destination’s reach. The Maldives’ hospitality sector continues to evolve, with new openings, refurbishment projects and upcoming resort developments shaping the destination’s tourism landscape. New properties in the pipeline include Amanolu and ONE BANYAN Amaraa Faru, an Atmosphere Hotel, alongside developments by established international hospitality brands. These investments are expected to further diversify the country’s accommodation offering and support continued tourism growth. Despite global travel disruptions and evolving market conditions, the Maldives continues to demonstrate resilience, supported by strong visitor demand, a diverse international market base, and ongoing investment across the tourism sector. The destination’s ability to adapt and innovate will remain key to sustaining growth and maintaining its position as a world-leading travel destination.

Michael David Marshall Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at S Hotels & Resorts

Michael David Marshall is the Chief Executive Officer of S Hotels & Resorts, bringing more than 30 years of international hospitality experience across some of the world’s most competitive markets. In this interview, he reflects on a career defined by commercial leadership, brand development, and strategic growth across global hospitality portfolios. His journey has taken him through diverse destinations and operating environments, shaping a leadership approach grounded in performance, people, and long-term value creation. Over the years, he has developed a strong ability to balance operational excellence with brandbuilding across multi-market hospitality businesses. In this interview, Marshall discusses his current focus on guiding the group’s continued expansion across Thailand, the Maldives, Fiji, Mauritius, and the UK. He highlights the importance of strengthening brand identity and evolving lifestyle hospitality concepts, with SAii Lagoon Maldives playing a key role in this direction. His approach centres on building a more connected, experience-led portfolio that reflects the changing nature of global travel and guest expectations.

You have built a career of more than 30 years across some of the world’s most competitive hospitality markets before taking the helm at S Hotels & Resorts. What attracted you to this chapter of your career, and what felt different about the opportunity? What attracted me most was the opportunity to take on a leadership role within a company that already had strong foundations, but equally strong ambition for growth. My background has largely been in commercial leadership, focused on building brands, driving performance, and expanding businesses across international markets. Joining S Hotels & Resorts allowed me to bring that experience into a broader, more strategic leadership environment, where I could contribute not just to individual performance, but to the long-term direction of the company. What stood out to me was the stage the business was at. S Hotels & Resorts already had a well-established

portfolio of distinctive destinations across Thailand, the Maldives, Fiji, Mauritius, and the UK, each with its own identity and strength. At the same time, there was a clear sense of momentum and opportunity to further evolve and grow. That combination was particularly compelling, a strong existing platform with the potential to scale further. It offered the chance to build on what was already successful, while helping to shape the next chapter of growth, particularly for SAii Hotels & Resorts as it continues to develop its position in the lifestyle hospitality space.

When you first joined as CEO, what stood out most about S Hotels & Resorts as a company, and where did you see properties such as SAii Lagoon Maldives contributing to its future direction? What stood out to me immediately was the strength of our destinations and the quality of the assets we already have in place. There is a solid foundation across the portfolio, but what was equally clear to me was

55

56

TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES

the scale of opportunity that exists to further refine positioning, strengthen brand identity, and unlock even more value across the business. What makes this particularly exciting is that we are not starting from scratch; we are building on something that already works. That creates a very different kind of opportunity: one focused on evolution rather than transformation for its own sake. It allows us to be more intentional about how we grow, how we differentiate, and how we elevate the guest experience across each destination. SAii Lagoon Maldives is a strong example of this direction in practice. It reflects the way travel is evolving, towards experiences that are more immersive, more lifestyle-driven, and more emotionally connected. Guests today are not just looking for a place to stay; they are looking for destinations that feel alive, that offer variety, and that create genuine moments of connection. That is where I see the strongest long-term potential, continuing to build on a proven foundation while shaping brands and experiences that stay relevant to how people want to travel today and in the future.

One of the group’s most talked-about destinations is SAii Lagoon Maldives. From your perspective, what makes this property stand out in a destination already known for its exceptional hospitality offering? The Maldives is one of the most competitive resort markets in the world, so differentiation is incredibly important. What makes SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton truly stand out is that it is part of CROSSROADS Maldives, the Maldives’ first multi-island lifestyle destination. That immediately gives guests access to a much broader and more dynamic experience than a traditional standalone resort. CROSSROADS brings together distinctive hospitality brands including SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, and the newly opened SO/ Maldives, creating a vibrant lifestyle ecosystem that caters to a wide range of traveller preferences. In addition to the natural beauty and exceptional hospitality that travellers expect from the Maldives, guests also enjoy access to a wider lifestyle ecosystem, from diverse dining and wellness experiences to marine activities and entertainment. What I particularly like about SAii Lagoon Maldives is that it brings together all of this in a way that feels relaxed, vibrant, and highly accessible. There’s a real sense of energy and personality to the resort. It offers a more contemporary and flexible approach to luxury, which resonates strongly with today’s travellers who are looking for meaningful experiences and greater choice.

As part of CROSSROADS Maldives, how do you see SAii Lagoon Maldives contributing to the broader narrative of the destination and its vision for a new multi-island experience? SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton plays a central role in bringing that vision to life. It offers guests far more than a traditional resort stay, with access to a wide range of experiences spanning dining, entertainment, wellness, marine discovery, and leisure activities. This creates a more dynamic and flexible holiday experience, which is increasingly aligned with how modern travellers and families want to travel. For families in particular, it provides the ability to balance shared experiences with individual interests, whether that’s children engaging in marine exploration, parents enjoying wellness or dining, or everyone coming together for lifestyle and entertainment moments within the same destination. That creates a much more dynamic and flexible experience, which is increasingly appealing to modern travellers. It also adds another dimension to the destination through its strong MICE offering. With dedicated event spaces and access to the wider CROSSROADS facilities, SAii Lagoon Maldives is well positioned for corporate retreats, incentive travel, and private events, further expanding the Maldives’ appeal beyond traditional leisure travel.

As the Maldives evolves as a destination, what do you think will define the next generation of resorts that truly stand out? I think the resorts that will stand out in the future are those that offer more than just traditional luxury. Today, luxury is no longer just about exceptional design, beautiful surroundings, or high-end amenities, it is increasingly defined by meaning, personalisation, and the quality of experiences created for each guest. Guests are looking for experiences that feel authentic and emotionally engaging, whether through wellness journeys, culinary discovery, or immersive encounters with local culture and the marine environment. Sustainability is also becoming a key differentiator, especially in destinations like the Maldives. It goes beyond behind-the-scenes operations and is now about how guests are actively involved in the experience. Opportunities to take part in marine conservation, coral restoration, and wider environmental initiatives are becoming an important part of the stay, adding purpose and depth to traditional luxury hospitality. Ultimately, the resorts that will stand out are those that are able to balance excellence with meaning, delivering luxury that is not only refined and memorable, but also responsible, purposeful, and deeply connected to the destination.

TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES

What role do you see multi-island destinations like CROSSROADS Maldives playing in the future of island tourism? I believe CROSSROADS Maldives is playing a pioneering role in redefining island tourism in the Maldives. It introduced a new model for the Maldives, moving beyond the traditional one-island, one-resort concept to create a more connected, experience-led destination where hospitality, leisure, retail, entertainment, and marine experiences come together within a single multi-island setting. As traveller expectations continue to evolve, guests are increasingly looking for variety, flexibility, and richer experiences within one destination rather than a single-layer stay. In that context, multiisland destinations are becoming more relevant, and I see them playing a growing role in shaping the future of island tourism, offering a more dynamic way to experience places like the Maldives while still preserving the essence of what makes them special.

Looking back on your career, if there is one lesson you would want the next generation of hospitality leaders to take from your experience, what would it be? The biggest lesson for me is that great hospitality always starts with great people. No matter how strong the concept or how beautiful the destination, success ultimately comes from the teams who bring it to life every day. It is about building the right culture, empowering people to take ownership, and creating an environment where they feel confident and motivated to deliver their best. When that foundation is in place, exceptional guest experiences follow naturally. At the same time, leadership in this industry requires constant adaptability. Hospitality never stands still, guest expectations evolve, trends shift, and destinations continue to change. Strong leaders need to stay open, responsive, and willing to evolve with the industry, while never losing sight of what matters most: people and the experiences they create together.

Alexander Traeger Area General Manager, Maldives at S Hotels & Resorts

With more than 25 years of experience in hospitality, Alexander Traeger has built a career defined by continuous growth, international exposure, and a deep passion for people. Beginning his journey as a cook in Europe, he progressed through a range of operational and leadership roles across Europe, the Middle East, and the Maldives. Since first arriving in the Maldives, he has steadily advanced through the industry, gaining extensive experience across all aspects of resort operations before taking on his current role as Area General Manager, Maldives. In this interview, Alexander speaks about leading SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton, and CROSSROADS Maldives, sharing his approach to people-centred leadership, team development, and delivering exceptional guest experiences across the multi-island destination. He emphasises the importance of a people-centric leadership philosophy, where empowered teams drive exceptional guest experiences. His focus on culture, collaboration, and operational excellence continues to strengthen SSAiiLagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton as a leading lifestyle resort, while also supporting the continued growth of CROSSROADS Maldives as a pioneering multi-island destination.

Could you share your journey in hospitality and what brought you to the Maldives, and how that path has shaped your perspective today? My journey in hospitality began in the kitchen as a chef. From there, I progressed through a range of roles with different hospitality companies across Europe and later the Middle East, gaining hands-on experience in operations, service excellence, and guest experience. Alongside my career, I have always been passionate about scuba diving, an interest that gradually became more influential in shaping my personal and professional direction towards the Maldives. While working in Lebanon, I was given an opportunity to join Banyan Tree in the Maldives. At that time, I had never visited the country before and only knew it through stories I had heard. Intrigued by both the opportunity and the destination itself, I decided to take the leap and make the move. That decision marked the beginning of a relationship with the Maldives that has now spanned 25 years. Over time, I have worked in the country on and off, spending periods here before

moving abroad for new experiences and always finding my way back. My progression in the Maldives has been both rewarding and transformative. I started as a chef, moved into food and beverage management, then progressed to Executive Assistant Manager, followed by Director of Operations, as General Manager and today I serve as Area General Manager, Maldives.. Each step has shaped my perspective on leadership, hospitality, and the distinctive character of the Maldivian tourism industry.

With over two decades of global experience, how have international markets shaped your leadership style as Area General Manager, Maldives at S Hotels & Resorts, and what core principles guide your decisions? One of the biggest ways my journey has shaped me is through the people I have worked with. Early in my career in Europe, I was primarily surrounded by local teams and colleagues from similar backgrounds. As I moved into international hospitality, particularly in the

59

60

Middle East and the Maldives, I found myself working alongside people from a wide range of cultures, nationalities, and experiences. Those experiences taught me the importance of understanding different cultures and connecting with people on an individual level. They have significantly influenced my leadership style and the way I approach both my work and my teams. I have always believed that hospitality is, above all, a people business. I am very people-focused in my approach. My philosophy is simple: when team members are happy, it reflects in the guest experience. Guests can immediately sense the atmosphere within a team, and a motivated, engaged workforce naturally delivers better service. That is why I place great importance on creating a positive and supportive working environment. Having spent the past four and a half years at SAii Lagoon Maldives, I am proud that many of our department heads and team members have been with us for a long time. I see that as a testament not only to my leadership but to the collective efforts of the entire team. Ultimately, I believe that successful hospitality operations are built on strong people management, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to excellence.

Experiences and activities are becoming key decision-making factors for travellers. What are some of the signature experiences guests can only truly experience at SAii Lagoon Maldives and CROSSROADS Maldives? What makes our destination truly unique is not just the Maldives itself, but the experience we are able to offer through the combination of three distinct resorts within one multi-island leisure destination. At CROSSROADS Maldives, guests have access to SO/ Maldives, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, and SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton, allowing them to enjoy a diverse range of experiences during a single stay. One of the key advantages at CROSSROADS Maldives, is the variety available to our guests. With access to 14 restaurants and bars across the destination, guests can explore different cuisines and atmospheres without the limitations typically associated with a single-resort experience. Guests also have the flexibility to enjoy the facilities and offerings across all three properties. The location itself provides exceptional opportunities to experience the natural beauty of the Maldives. We are situated close to renowned marine attractions, including a nurse shark point just

15 minutes away and Stingray City near Hulhumalé, which can be reached in approximately 30 minutes. Dolphins are also a frequent sight, often passing by our lagoon in the late afternoon, offering guests memorable wildlife encounters right on our doorstep. Beyond nature, entertainment plays a significant role in the guest experience. Through our connection with Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, music is at the heart of the destination. Live bands perform daily, complemented by regular appearances from local artists and popular karaoke nights that bring together resort guests, residents of Malé, and the expatriate community. We have also expanded our recreational offerings with the addition of padel courts and tennis facilities. These amenities are available not only to resort guests but also to visitors from Malé through membership programmes. The growing popularity of padel has fostered an active community around the sport, with regular matches, club activities, and upcoming international tournaments adding another exciting dimension to the destination. For me, what truly sets us apart is the ability to offer guests a perfect blend of island experiences through entertainment, sports, culture, and nature, all within one vibrant destination. It creates a dynamic experience that goes beyond the traditional Maldivian resort stay.

How do SAii Lagoon Maldives and The Marina at CROSSROADS Maldives contribute differently to the overall destination narrative? Traditionally, the concept was simple: one resort, one island. While that remains a wonderful experience, first-time visitors often wonder whether they will have enough to do during their stay or whether an isolated island holiday will suit their travel style. What CROSSROADS has demonstrated is that the Maldives can offer much more variety and flexibility while retaining its natural beauty and sense of escape. Located just 15 minutes from Malé, the destination provides convenient access and a diverse range of experiences, making it particularly appealing to modern travellers. One of the greatest strengths of the destination is the ability to experience three distinct resort concepts in one location. Guests staying at SAii Lagoon Maldives can also enjoy the facilities, restaurants, and experiences available at Hard Rock Hotel Maldives. This creates a dynamic holiday experience where guests can choose exactly how they want to spend their time.

TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES

One day, they may immerse themselves in the vibrant entertainment, music, and energy of Hard Rock Hotel Maldives. Next, they can unwind at SAii Lagoon Maldives and embrace a more relaxed, laid-back island lifestyle. Whether guests are seeking adventure, entertainment, social experiences, or simply a peaceful retreat, the destination offers the freedom to tailor their stay to their individual preferences. For me, that flexibility is what truly sets CROSSROADS apart. It provides guests with the best of both worlds, the tranquillity and beauty of the Maldives combined with a breadth of experiences that ensure there is always something to discover, whether they are looking to stay active or simply relax and recharge.

How has SAii Lagoon Maldives evolved its identity since opening, and what would you say defines the resort today? When SAii Lagoon Maldives first opened, it was originally conceptualised with a strong focus on the MICE segment, featuring a larger proportion of smaller room categories. However, as travel trends evolved, so did our approach. Over the years, we have seen a significant shift towards family travel and, increasingly, multi-generational travel. While honeymooners continue to be an important part of our guest mix, families now represent a much larger share of our business. Also, we have continuously evolved our offerings to better cater to these changing guest expectations. We introduced padel courts and enhanced our recreational facilities, while our beach club has become a vibrant hub where families can spend an entire day enjoying a wide range of activities in a relaxed setting. With its expansive pool area and engaging daily programme, it has become one of the most popular gathering spaces within the destination . One area I am particularly proud of is our Junior Beach Club. We intentionally moved away from the traditional “Kids Club” concept because older children and teenagers want experiences that feel more relevant to their age group. The Junior Beach Club offers activities for guests up to 17 years old, ranging from snorkelling and swimming lessons to arts and crafts, educational experiences, and even fun activities such as ice cream tasting sessions. Beyond our resort offerings, I believe SAii Lagoon Maldives and CROSSROADS Maldives have evolved into something much larger. We have become an active part of the wider community, particularly within the Greater Malé region. Through various corporate social responsibility initiatives, we regularly engage with schools from

61

Malé and Hulhumalé, creating opportunities for students to learn about the unique natural and cultural heritage of the Maldives. A key part of this effort is the Maldives Discovery Centre, which offers visitors a deeper understanding of the country’s history, culture, and environment. What makes it particularly special is that it goes beyond showcasing the natural beauty of the Maldives. It explores the many influences that have shaped the nation over centuries, from Middle Eastern and Persian connections to Chinese, Portuguese, and British influences, and how these interactions have contributed to the rich cultural identity of the Maldives today. For me, this reflects the broader evolution of our destination. At SAii Lagoon Maldives, our goal is to go beyond the traditional resort experience by connecting guests with the culture, community, and natural beauty that make the Maldives truly unique.

Under your leadership, SAii Lagoon Maldives has received several major Hilton recognitions, including the Hilton’s most prestigious Connie Award. What operational philosophies have contributed most to this success? I firmly believe that strong leadership starts with being present. For me, that means being on the ground, engaging with the team, and ensuring that attention to detail is embedded in everything we do. Hospitality is ultimately about people, and genuine smiles and exceptional service come from team members who feel valued, supported, and happy in their roles. This philosophy ties directly into my approach to people management. I make it a priority to ensure that our team members not only have the tools and resources they need to perform their jobs effectively, but also the support they need to enjoy a good quality of life. At CROSSROADS Maldives, we have nearly 900 team members living within the destination, creating a vibrant community that requires constant care and attention. One principle that is particularly important to me is that once a team member’s shift ends, they should be able to enjoy the destination much like a guest. Our restaurants and leisure facilities are accessible to team members, allowing them to relax, socialise, and make the most of their time off. We place a strong emphasis on work-life balance because we know that a positive employee experience ultimately translates into a better guest experience. We are also fortunate to have around 300 team members who commute daily from Malé and Hulhumalé. To support them, we

62

operate multiple ferry services each day, enabling them to work while remaining close to their families. In an industry where many people spend extended periods away from home, providing that connection and flexibility is incredibly valuable. For me, creating an environment where people feel supported, respected, and connected is one of the most important aspects of leadership. When our team thrives, our guests feel the difference, and that is what drives long-term success. Ultimately, I believe the recognition SAii Lagoon Maldives has received, including the prestigious Connie Award, is a reflection of our people-first culture. Awards are never the achievement of one individual; they are the result of a passionate team consistently delivering exceptional experiences. For me, the Connie Award validates our commitment to both team members’ wellbeing and guest satisfaction, proving that when you invest in your people, excellence naturally follows.

Looking ahead, what is your vision for SAii Lagoon Maldives and CROSSROADS Maldives over the next few years, both in terms of guest experience and destination development? Looking ahead, we have several exciting developments planned for SAii Lagoon Maldives. Over the next two years, we will be enhancing our guest experience through the renovation of selected restaurants, while also introducing private pools to all of our water villas. In addition, we are developing a new collection of overwater villas with a fresh design concept, further expanding SAii’s footprint and elevating the range of experiences available to our guests. At the same time, sustainability remains a key focus for us. As a participant in the Maldives’ Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECM) initiative, we are committed to protecting the natural environment that makes this destination so special. In the Maldives, with rising sea levels and the realities of climate change, everything we do matters to ensure the destination is preserved for future generations over the next 100 years and beyond. For me, sustainability is not simply an initiative; it is a responsibility. Every action we take today, no matter how small, contributes to preserving the Maldives for future generations. As we continue to grow and innovate, our goal is to ensure that SAii Lagoon Maldives

63

evolves in a way that enhances the guest experience while safeguarding the natural beauty and ecosystems that define this remarkable destination.

What advice would you give to emerging hoteliers aspiring to lead large-scale, multi-experience destinations? My advice to aspiring hospitality leaders is simple: listen, be patient, observe, and then act. Before making decisions, take the time to truly understand your environment. Observe your destination, understand its unique needs, and engage with the people around you. Speak to your team members and listen carefully to your guests. Both perspectives are invaluable, particularly those of returning guests, who often provide insightful feedback based on their experiences over time. I have always believed that the best ideas often come from those closest to the operation. Team members interact with guests every day and hear firsthand what works well and where improvements can be made. As leaders, it is easy to become removed from those day-to-day conversations, which is why maintaining open communication is so important. Most importantly, when feedback is valid and improvements can be made, take action. Effective leadership is not just about listening, it is about creating an environment where people feel heard and where meaningful change follows. That is how trust is built, teams are strengthened, and lasting success is achieved.

Haydee Cruz Cluster Director of Sales at CROSSROADS Maldives

Haydee Cruz serves as Cluster Director of Sales at CROSSROADS Maldives, bringing a wealth of international hospitality experience across the Caribbean, South America, the USA, Thailand, and the Maldives. Her journey has been guided by a passion for travel and cultural exchange, along with a strong focus on commercial strategy within luxury and lifestyle hospitality brands. Over the years, she has developed expertise in understanding diverse source markets and shaping guestcentric positioning for integrated resort experiences. In her current role at CROSSROADS Maldives, she leads the commercial strategy for a unique multi-island destination that combines SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, and The Marina @ CROSSROADS. Her focus is on strengthening brand differentiation while driving synergy across the portfolio, positioning the destination as a lifestyle-led hub for modern travellers seeking immersive, experience-rich stays in the Maldives.

Having built an extensive international career in hospitality and resort sales, could you take us through the journey that eventually led you to CROSSROADS Maldives as Cluster Director of Sales? My journey in hospitality has been shaped by a passion for travel, cultural connection, and the ability to create meaningful guest experiences through strategic commercial leadership. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work across multiple international markets in the Caribbean, South America, the USA, Thailand and the Maldives, collaborating with diverse teams and global travel partners within lifestyle and luxury resorts, international hospitality brands, and integrated destinations. What attracted me to CROSSROADS Maldives was the uniqueness of the destination itself. Unlike traditional standalone resorts in the Maldives, CROSSROADS Maldives represents an entirely different concept, a fully integrated, multi-island lifestyle destination that combines hospitality, entertainment, dining, retail, and leisure experiences within one ecosystem.

For someone with a strong background in sales and marketing, the opportunity was incredibly exciting. It allowed me to apply my international experience while helping shape the commercial identity of a destination that continues to redefine the Maldivian hospitality landscape. The role also appealed to me because it requires balancing multiple brands with distinct personalities. At CROSSROADS Maldives, we are not simply selling rooms or villas; we are selling experiences tailored to different traveller profiles. That dynamic environment continuously challenges us to innovate, adapt, and remain highly connected to global travel trends. Throughout my career, I have learned that hospitality is ultimately about people, understanding guests, building trust with partners, and creating long-term relationships across markets. Those principles continue to guide me today in my role as Cluster Director of Sales & Marketing.

TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES

As part of CROSSROADS Maldives, SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton offers a distinct lifestyle-driven experience. How do you position SAii Lagoon Maldives to stand out in the market while complementing the broader identity of CROSSROADS Maldives? SAii Lagoon Maldives has a distinctive identity within the Maldives market, offering a relaxed, nature-focused, and experience-driven escape that feels vibrant, approachable, and authentic. Unlike traditional ultra-luxury resorts, SAii Lagoon Maldives emphasises emotional connection, discovery, and meaningful lifestyle experiences through its natural surroundings, family-friendly atmosphere, diverse dining, wellness offerings, and direct access to The Marina @ CROSSROADS. Its convenient location, just a short speedboat ride from Velana International Airport, further enhances its appeal to modern travellers seeking a Maldives experience that is immersive, social, and connected to nature while remaining aligned with the broader vision of CROSSROADS Maldives as a multi-island lifestyle destination. We position SAii Lagoon Maldives as a resort that appeals to modern travellers who value experiences, energy, and emotional connection. It is especially attractive for couples, families, groups of friends, and younger lifestyle travellers who want a Maldives holiday that feels less formal and more immersive.

The resort’s playful and approachable personality feels intentionally different from many traditional resorts in the destination. How does that brand character influence the way SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton is marketed globally?

Another important factor is the increasing demand for multigenerational and experience-driven holidays. SAii Lagoon Maldives offers an environment where guests can enjoy lifestyle experiences in a way that feels comfortable, social, and connected to nature. This balance is a major differentiator within the Maldives market and clearly distinguishes the resort from the entertainment-driven positioning of Hard Rock Hotel Maldives.

What source markets are currently performing strongest for SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton and where do you see the greatest potential for future growth? SAii Lagoon Maldives continues to perform strongly across a diversified mix of international markets. Traditionally, Europe remains an important contributor, particularly from countries with a strong affinity for long-haul leisure travel and lifestyle hospitality experiences. Asia is also becoming increasingly important, especially in markets such as India, Southeast Asia, and selected East Asian countries. India, in particular, has shown remarkable growth over recent years due to improved air connectivity, shorter travel times, rising disposable income, and growing interest in the Maldives as both a luxury and experiential destination. The Middle East has historically been another valuable market segment, particularly for family travel and premium leisure experiences. However, like many destinations globally, market dynamics continue to evolve depending on economic conditions, airline connectivity, and geopolitical developments.

SAii Lagoon Maldives is intentionally designed to feel fresh, uplifting, and experience-driven, with a strong connection to its natural surroundings. This means our communication style must consistently reflect that spirit. Our marketing focuses heavily on storytelling and lifestyle imagery rather than traditional lifestyle messaging. Instead of emphasising exclusivity or opulence alone, we showcase meaningful moments and authentic experiences: families enjoying the beach together, couples discovering the natural beauty of the island, guests cycling through the resort, wellness experiences by the ocean, sunset gatherings, marine encounters, and relaxed dining moments surrounded by nature.

In addition to leisure travel, we are also seeing increasing opportunities within the MICE and wedding segments. CROSSROADS Maldives offers a unique advantage for meetings, incentives, conferences, events, destination weddings, and celebratory occasions because of its integrated destination concept, diverse accommodation offerings, entertainment options, and accessibility from Velana International Airport. Today’s travellers are increasingly looking for destinations that combine memorable experiences with convenience, personalisation, and lifestyle-driven offerings.

The tone of our campaigns is warm, approachable, and human. We want travellers to feel emotionally connected to the resort before they even arrive. Authenticity is extremely important in today’s travel landscape, particularly among younger audiences and modern travellers who seek brands with personality, relatability, and genuine experiences.

For weddings and celebrations in particular, SAii Lagoon Maldives provides a vibrant yet intimate setting that appeals to couples seeking a more relaxed and experiential alternative to traditional luxury resorts. The ability to combine beachfront ceremonies, group accommodations, dining experiences, entertainment, and marina activities within one destination creates strong appeal for both intimate weddings and larger group celebrations.

Digital marketing and social media play a critical role in communicating the spirit of SAii Lagoon Maldives in real time. Video content, influencer collaborations, experiential storytelling, and user-generated content are highly effective in showcasing the resort’s relaxed lifestyle, natural environment, and sense of discovery.

TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES

Your role involves positioning SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, and The Marina @ CROSSROADS while driving overall destination growth. How has your career journey shaped your approach to managing such a diverse commercial portfolio? Managing a diverse commercial portfolio requires adaptability, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of brand identity. My international career has exposed me to a wide variety of hospitality models, market dynamics, and consumer behaviours, which have helped shape a more holistic commercial approach. One of the key lessons I have learned is that every brand must maintain its own authentic voice while still contributing to the larger destination story. At CROSSROADS Maldives, each component has a distinct identity. SAii Lagoon Maldives focuses on lifestyle-driven experiences, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives brings an energetic musicinspired hospitality concept, and The Marina serves as the social and entertainment hub of the destination. Our role is to ensure these brands complement rather than compete with one another. That requires close alignment between sales, marketing, revenue management, partnerships, public relations, and digital strategy. My previous experiences working across different countries and cultures also taught me the importance of flexibility and local market understanding. What resonates with travellers in Europe may differ significantly from what resonates with travellers in Asia or the Middle East. Successful commercial leadership requires balancing global brand consistency with market-specific strategies. Another important aspect is collaboration. Hospitality today is highly interconnected, and success often depends on strong partnerships, whether with travel advisors, tour operators, airlines, media, or online platforms. Building trust-based relationships remains one of the most important elements of sustainable commercial growth. Ultimately, managing such a diverse portfolio is about creating synergy while allowing each brand to maintain its individuality.

Throughout your career, you have worked with diverse teams, markets, and travel partners. What do you believe are the key qualities needed to succeed in hospitality sales and marketing at an international level? Hospitality is one of the most dynamic and people-driven industries in the world, and succeeding internationally requires a combination of professional expertise and personal adaptability. First and foremost, relationship-building skills are essential. Hospitality sales and marketing are fundamentally about trust, communication, and long-term partnerships. Strong relationships with travel partners, clients, media, and internal teams create the foundation for long-term success.

67

Cultural intelligence is equally important. Working internationally means understanding different communication styles, consumer behaviours, business expectations, and market sensitivities. Being open-minded and adaptable allows professionals to navigate diverse environments more effectively. Resilience is another critical quality. The hospitality industry is constantly evolving, influenced by economic changes, global events, consumer trends, and technological shifts. Successful leaders must remain agile, solution-oriented, and capable of adapting quickly to change. Creativity and innovation are also increasingly important in today’s competitive landscape. Travellers are seeking more personalised and emotionally engaging experiences, which means hospitality brands must continuously evolve their storytelling, marketing strategies, and guest engagement approaches. At the same time, strong analytical skills are essential. Sales and marketing today rely heavily on data, performance metrics, market intelligence, and digital insights. Balancing creativity with commercial discipline is key to achieving sustainable results. Finally, passion remains one of the most important qualities of all. Hospitality is an industry built on creating memorable experiences and human connections. Genuine passion for people, travel, and service excellence is what ultimately drives long-term success.

The Evolution of Maldivian Hospitality: Shaping the Maldives’ Tourism Legacy

Sun Siyam Iru Fushi

Tourism in the Maldives officially began in 1972 with the opening of the country’s first resort, NIVA Kurumba Maldives, then known as Kurumba Village. Opened in October 1972 with a modest 280-bed capacity, the resort welcomed its first international travellers, marking a defining moment in the Maldives’ history. What began as a bold and uncertain venture would ultimately transform the Maldives into one of the world’s leading destinations. From those early days, Maldivian visionaries laid the foundation for an industry that would eventually attract the world’s renowned hospitality brands. Yet, Maldivian-owned and Maldives-rooted hospitality groups have continued to stand strong within this highly competitive landscape, building enduring legacies while contributing to the continued growth of the destination. Over the decades, resort ownership and management in the Maldives have evolved from individual properties into well-established hospitality groups managing

multiple islands. These businesses have developed influential portfolios across the country while nurturing a distinct approach to hospitality, one that combines international service standards with a deep understanding of Maldivian culture, environment and community. Long before global hospitality brands established a presence in the country, Maldivian-owned resorts were already welcoming international travellers and shaping the Maldives’ tourism sector.Hospitality groups such as Sun Siyam Resorts, Villa Resorts, VERSA Hospitality, formerly Universal Resorts, Crown & Champa Resorts, Sunland Hotels and AAA Hotels & Resorts exemplify this legacy. From Sunland Hotels, which evolved from a travel agency founded in 1985 into the hospitality group behind Coco Collection and Biyadhoo Island Resort, to AAA Hotels & Resorts and its portfolio of Medhufushi Island Resort, Filitheyo Island Resort and Hondaafushi Island Resort, these groups continue to reflect the resilience, adaptability and long-term vision of Maldivian hospitality leaders.

This locally driven evolution has also introduced concepts and service models that have influenced the wider resort industry. Lily Hotels was among the pioneers of the all-inclusive concept in the Maldives through Lily Beach Resort & Spa, setting a benchmark for premium all-inclusive experiences and helping shape a highly sought-after segment. As traveller expectations have evolved, locally rooted groups have continued to develop more diverse portfolios while retaining a distinct understanding of the destination. From Tuna Freighter to Ocean Icon: Siyam World Maldives Launches Noonu Atoll’s New Dive Playground

A former Maldivian tuna freighter has now been reimagined as a dynamic wreck dive site and the foundation of a future living reef at Siyam World Maldives. Through natural coral growth and dedicated restoration efforts, the wreck is expected to gradually transform into a thriving underwater ecosystem, creating new habitat for marine life and contributing to the long-term health of the surrounding environment. Developed in collaboration with the resort’s expert team at Sun Diving, the project blends Maldivian heritage, conservation, and underwater adventure into one remarkable experience.

TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES

The vessel itself carries a rich history. Built in Japan during the 1980s, the freighter once transported Maldivian tuna across the atolls to Malé and local canneries. Measuring 66.36 metres in length and weighing 499 tonnes, it has now begun a second life beneath the waters of Noonu Atoll as both an exciting dive attraction and the foundation of a growing artificial reef. After being located in Lhaviyani Atoll and carefully cleaned and prepared near Malé, the vessel was transported to Noonu Atoll and purposefully sunk within Siyam World’s territorial waters, beside a thriving reef already known for schooling fish and vibrant marine life. The project was not without its challenges. During the initial sinking, trapped air caused the ship to settle upside down on the seabed. A skilled local team later undertook the complex task of rotating the wreck into its intended upright position using large air bags and ropes, successfully completing the operation after weeks of careful work.

89

Today, the bow points dramatically towards the reef at 10 metres, while the stern descends to 24 metres, creating an accessible yet thrilling dive for a wide range of certified divers. Marine life has already begun claiming the structure as its own. Species recorded around the wreck include guitar sharks, blacktip reef sharks, lemon sharks, nurse sharks, grey reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, eagle rays, stingrays and turtles. Soft and hard corals are also flourishing across the steel structure, highlighting its potential as one of the Maldives’ most ambitious artificial reef projects. Unlike a traditional reef dive, the site offers atmosphere, scale and a genuine sense of exploration. Divers can follow the ship’s striking exterior lines or venture carefully into open sections to experience its shadowed interiors and dramatic angles. The contrast between the bright blue waters and the imposing steel silhouette creates unforgettable perspectives, making the wreck as visually compelling as it is ecologically significant. With approval to cultivate coral fragments directly onto the wreck, the Sun Diving team continues to enhance the site as a living and evolving artificial reef. At the heart of this effort is Wreck to Reef, an ocean conservation initiative under the Sun Siyam Cares sustainability platform. The programme focuses on monitoring coral growth, biodiversity and the overall development of the ecosystem, documenting the transformation of the vessel into a thriving marine habitat. Beyond creating a unique dive attraction, the project aims to foster a deeper connection between travellers and the marine environment. By combining conservation, education and exploration, the initiative demonstrates how an ageing vessel can be given new purpose beneath the ocean’s surface.

A Culinary Journey Beneath the Surface at You & Me Maldives

In the Maldives, dining is often shaped by the ocean, but at You & Me Maldives, the experience goes beyond views of the lagoon. Beneath the surface of the island, H2O by Andrea Berton brings together contemporary cuisine and the surrounding marine environment, creating an intimate setting where the underwater world becomes part of the dining experience. Located fully beneath the sea, H2O is designed around a 360-degree panoramic view of the reef. Through its

curved glass walls, diners can watch sharks, stingrays, tropical fish and other marine life move through the waters surrounding the restaurant, creating a constantly changing backdrop throughout the meal. With seating limited to 20 guests at a time, the setting remains intimate and personal. At the heart of H2O is the cuisine of Andrea Berton, one of Italy’s celebrated chefs whose contemporary approach shapes the restaurant’s gastronomic identity. The menu takes inspiration from contemporary Mediterranean cuisine, presented through carefully composed tasting menus that bring together refined techniques, premium ingredients and detailed presentation. The dining experience extends beyond the food, with wine pairings, personalised service and curated music contributing to the atmosphere. Rather than separating the culinary experience from its surroundings, H2O brings the elements together, allowing the changing underwater scene to accompany each course. The restaurant’s design is central to the experience. Created by LAGO, the dome-shaped structure features sophisticated interiors that sit within the marine environment, giving guests the feeling of dining within the reef itself. As the meal progresses, the view outside remains in motion. Fish pass through the reef, rays glide across the water and sharks appear in the distance, making the underwater setting more than a backdrop. Every table has a direct connection to the

marine environment, giving the experience a sense of immersion that is difficult to replicate above the surface. With its intimate setting and distinctive surroundings, H2O has become a setting for occasions that call for something beyond a conventional dinner. Proposals, honeymoons, anniversaries, romantic evenings and private celebrations can all take place beneath the surface, surrounded by the waters of the Maldives. The restaurant also forms part of You & Me Maldives’ culinary programming, including Gourmet Weeks featuring Chef Andrea Berton, giving guests opportunities to experience his cuisine within the setting where his culinary concept meets the Maldivian ocean. The marine environment surrounding H2O is also at the centre of You & Me Maldives’ conservation efforts. The resort runs a coral restoration and rehabilitation programme in collaboration with marine biologists and its team, working to restore damaged areas of the reef and support the ecosystem surrounding the island. The programme includes planting new coral frames

and restoring coral fragments, helping strengthen biodiversity and preserve habitats for the marine life visible from H2O. In this way, the reef is not simply part of the restaurant’s setting; it is a living ecosystem that the resort is working to protect. Dining at H2O ultimately brings together two experiences that are closely connected to the Maldives: its culinary creativity and its underwater world. With Andrea Berton’s cuisine served beneath the surface and the reef unfolding beyond the glass, a meal here becomes an experience shaped as much by the ocean as it is by what arrives at the table.

The Evolution of TTM Maldives:

Celebrating a Decade of Excellence

TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES

For the past decade, Travel Trade Maldives has been at the forefront of the Maldives’ tourism industry, supporting its growth through business networking, industry intelligence and media. As TTM Maldives marked its 10th anniversary in 2026, its evolution reflects a decade of innovation, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to advancing the Maldives’ tourism industry.

Building the Maldives’ Leading Travel Trade Platform The journey began in July 2017 with the inaugural edition of TTM Maldives at the Art Gallery in Malé. The event welcomed more than 200 tourism professionals, including international travel agents, tour operators, airlines and local industry stakeholders. Through its structured one-to-one meeting format, TTM Maldives has since grown into the country’s leading international travel trade show. A defining feature of the inaugural exhibition was the launch of TTM Connect, an online portal designed to streamline business networking through prescheduled meetings. During its first edition alone, the platform facilitated more than 3,000 meetings between exhibitors and international buyers.

TTM Connect has since evolved into a year-round travel trade portal designed for tourism professionals in the Maldives and around the world to connect and network. Its expanding range of features includes the Travel Trade Directory, TTM Data, TTM Maldives, TTM Awards and TTM Destination Specialist. The Travel Trade Directory provides access to an extensive network of resorts, travel agencies, tour operators and other tourism partners, while TTM Data delivers visitor arrival statistics, market trends and destination insights to support informed business decisions. Together, these features strengthen professional connections and provide the industry with valuable resources throughout the year. Education has also become an important part of the platform through TTM Destination Specialist. Designed for travel agents, tour operators and hospitality professionals, the programme offers valuable insights for those promoting or managing Maldives travel experiences. Participants can deepen their knowledge through individual resort courses and earn a Silver badge after completing 15 courses, Gold after 30 courses and Platinum after 50 courses. Alongside the growth of TTM Connect, the TTM Awards have evolved into one of the Maldives’ leading

tourism recognition programmes. Initially established to honour the destination’s Top Producers, the awards have expanded to celebrate excellence across resorts, tourism brands, airlines and industry professionals through a diverse range of categories.

Expanding Beyond Events: The Growth of Travel Trade Maldives Media As TTM Maldives established itself as the country’s leading international travel trade show, its influence naturally extended beyond the annual event. Travel Trade Maldives developed into a year-round media platform, providing daily coverage of resort news, new developments, aviation, tourism trends, regulatory updates and leadership movements across the industry. Recognising the demand for high-quality industry publications, Travel Trade Maldives introduced its magazine in 2022. Featuring exclusive interviews, destination features, market insights and industry analysis, the publication further strengthened Travel Trade Maldives’ position as a leading voice within the Maldivian tourism sector. TTM Takeover was introduced as the ultimate media campaign for a selected property, providing extensive coverage across accommodation, dining, wellness, excursions, experiences and the people behind the resort. Each campaign is featured on the cover of the quarterly Travel Trade Maldives magazine and receives prominent placement on the homepage of the website, supported by original editorial and multimedia content across TTM’s platforms. Best of Maldives has also grown beyond its original concept as an annual coffee-table publication. It combined its established print edition with a comprehensive digital platform featuring detailed resort profiles, accommodation, dining, experiences and immersive virtual tours. The Travel Trade Maldives media portfolio has continued to expand with video interviews under TTM+ and People, celebrating the individuals whose leadership, innovation and expertise continue to shape the Maldives’ tourism industry. Together, these platforms have transformed Travel Trade Maldives from a trade exhibition into a comprehensive tourism business and media ecosystem.

A Milestone 10th Edition The 10th edition of TTM Maldives took place on 26 and 27 August 2026, marking a major milestone in the platform’s decade-long journey. Its successful conclusion reflected how far TTM Maldives has come since its first edition in 2017, while reinforcing its role as a central meeting point for the Maldives’ tourism industry and the global travel trade community.

TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES

The Next Chapter: A Decade of Innovation With its 10th edition concluded, Travel Trade Maldives enters its second decade with a broader vision that brings together B2B tourism, consumer-focused media and digital innovation.

update their profiles through TTM Connect, ensuring that the latest information, imagery, accommodation, dining concepts and experiences remain accessible throughout the year.

One of the latest additions to its media portfolio is TTM Check-In, a dedicated resort feature presented across print and digital platforms. Each feature highlights a property through three key areas: Rooms, Villas & Suites; Dining; and Top Things to Do. Through detailed editorial content and engaging visuals, TTM Check-In offers travellers a closer look at the defining elements of each resort.

The platform will also introduce Best of Maldives Traveller’s Choice, a recognition programme determined entirely by reader ratings. Across a wide range of categories, the programme will place travellers at the centre of the selection process and celebrate the resorts, villas, restaurants and experiences that leave the strongest impression on visitors to the Maldives.

TTM Connect will also continue its digital transformation through new features and enhancements. In addition to its Travel Trade Directory, industry data and year-round networking capabilities, the portal is introducing facial recognition technology to support faster registration and a more seamless delegate experience during TTM Maldives. The continued development of TTM Loop will further strengthen communication between partners by enabling businesses to create targeted campaigns, manage marketing initiatives and track performance through a centralised platform. Best of Maldives will continue to evolve as both an annual print publication and a comprehensive digital platform. Its detailed resort profiles bring together information on location, transfers, facilities, villas, dining and signature experiences, while immersive virtual tours allow travellers to explore selected properties online. Resort partners can manage and

Alongside this, the TTM Awards will be refined with fewer, more focused categories and a verified voting process involving the travel trade industry and the TTM Editorial Team. Voting results will also be made visible, creating greater transparency and strengthening the credibility of the awards. As it celebrates a decade of excellence and looks towards its next chapter, Travel Trade Maldives remains focused on driving innovation, strengthening global partnerships and showcasing the very best of the Maldives to the international travel trade and travellers around the world.

Travel Trade Maldives Elevates Best of Maldives with Resort Profiles and Virtual Tours

Travel Trade Maldives has elevated Best of Maldives into a comprehensive digital platform, bringing together detailed resort profiles, luxury villas, dining, experiences, immersive virtual tours and a new traveller-led recognition programme. Building on its original concept as a curated coffee-table publication available both online and in print, Best of Maldives now extends to the Travel Trade Maldives website through detailed resort profiles that bring together essential information, accommodation, dining, experiences and immersive digital content in one destination.

TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES

Each resort profile provides an overview of the property alongside key information such as location, transfers, facilities and room categories. Travellers can explore individual villas and accommodation types in greater detail, including villa sizes, occupancy, views, bed configurations, private pools and other key features. Current profiles also feature individual restaurants and bars, including their cuisines and dining styles, as well as experiences ranging from snorkelling and diving to marine encounters and private island excursions. The Best of Maldives page also highlights properties with available virtual tours, giving travellers the opportunity to explore selected resorts virtually. By bringing resort information, luxury villas, dining, experiences, reader ratings and virtual tours together within a single platform, Best of Maldives aims to make resort discovery more informative, engaging and accessible for travellers planning a holiday in the Maldives. For resort partners, the platform also provides a more dynamic way to maintain their presence on Travel Trade Maldives. Resort information can be updated through TTM Connect, enabling properties to keep their profiles current with their latest accommodation categories, imagery, dining concepts and experiences. A major addition to the platform will be the introduction of Best of Maldives Traveller’s Choice, a new recognition determined entirely by travellers. Traveller’s Choice will be determined 100% through public voting, giving travellers the opportunity to recognise the resorts and experiences they value most.

121

All votes and ratings will undergo a verification and vetting process to maintain the credibility and integrity of the results. Based on these verified public ratings, leading properties and experiences will receive Best of Maldives Traveller’s Choice recognition, creating a transparent, traveller-led benchmark across the destination. The initiative will also allow visitors to use reader ratings as part of their resort discovery process, adding another layer of insight alongside detailed property information, accommodation, dining, experiences and virtual tours.Winners of the Best of Maldives Traveller’s Choice will be prominently reflected across the Best of Maldives website and the annual Best of Maldives publication, providing recognised properties and experiences with continued visibility across both digital and print platforms. The expansion marks a new chapter for Best of Maldives, complementing its established annual publication with a continuously accessible digital resource. Best of Maldives has previously explored key segments of the destination through dedicated editions, including dining and wellness, while the new platform broadens that approach by bringing the different elements of the Maldives resort experience together online.
