From the Publisher As we step into a new year, it’s only natural to look ahead, especially when it comes to the place we call home—our beloved City of Orange. If there’s one thing that defines a strong community, it’s the people, especially those helping to guide what comes next.

That’s why in this issue of the Old Towne Orange Plaza Review, our “Know The Neighbors” column (pgs.

9-11) feels especially timely. In these pages, we get to know three of the city’s key leaders: Nathalie Adourian, Orange City Attorney; Jared Hildenbrand, Orange City Manager and Adam Jevec, Orange Police Chief.

Together, they help ensure that as we move into 2026 and beyond, Orange remains on solid ground.

Here at the Plaza Review, we share that same commitment to the continued success of our community, which is why we’re proud to highlight the work of so many dedicated individuals and organizations. Among them is the Orange Chamber of Commerce Foundation, whose mission centers on creating a supportive environment for the children of Orange. In this issue, read about the organization’s fundraising efforts, including the beloved community events they will oversee this year, such as Miss City of Orange and the Orange May Parade (pgs. 16-17).

Orange residents can also look forward to an exciting new chapter as the Call to Adventure at the California Fire Museum and Safety Learning Center soon takes up residence at the former Orange Fire Station 1 (pg. 16).

As the new year gets underway, it’s encouraging to see Orange continuing to honor its past while investing in what comes next—through the people, programs and places that keep our community strong, connected and thriving.

Now in Old Towne Orange As 2026 begins, Old Towne continues to grow with Culinary Dropout and Love & Lace Bridal Salon opening their doors, and Bagel Me! under new management.

Bagel Me! has been an Old Towne fixture for 17 years, and new owners Pattie and Alex Córdova plan to keep it that way.

The couple took over the business on October 8, marking a milestone in a journey that started long before they became restaurateurs. Pattie, who serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Orange Chamber of Commerce and runs the I Heart Old Towne Orange brand, had been searching for the right restaurant opportunity with her husband, Alex, who operates Buen Día Services, an accounting and bookkeeping business. It had been Alex’s longstanding dream to open a restaurant.

“As a small business owner in Old Towne, it really allows me to be further involved in the business community and see where the stresses and opportunities are,” says Pattie. “It has been a great experience getting even further integrated with the culture here.”

The Córdovas had been regular customers for nearly a decade, and after building a friendship with the previous owner, they decided it was the right next step for them to take over the business.

“We have been going to Bagel Me for almost 10 years with our kids, and we would even do a first-day-of-school routine where they always chose Bagel Me! at the start of every school year,” says Pattie.

The Córdovas say that in addition to expanding their menu, they are experimenting with new coffee drinks and want to be known for those items.

Pattie and Alex plan to keep the core concept intact while introducing changes to highlight what customers might be missing, like hamburgers and sandwiches.

“Once people taste them, we often have customers say they’re the best hamburgers in Orange County,” says Pattie.

Bagel Me! marks the first time the couple, who have been married for 24 years and have three teenage sons, have officially been in business together.

“You don’t know what to expect when it comes to running a business as a couple, but it has been amazing,” says Alex. “I enjoy the numbers and operations side of it, and Pattie is great at being creative and working with the team,

so it has been a natural split.”

For the Córdovas, preserving what makes Bagel Me! special to the community remains the priority.

“Above all, we want the community to know we’re not changing anything, we’re just trying to make things better,” says Pattie.

“The business has been here for 17 years and is so established, so it is a privilege to carry that forward.”

If the winter months make you crave comfort food, a new restaurant has made its way to Orange just in time. Culinary Dropout, an American gastropub, opened in Old Towne in October as the chain’s 16th location.

“There is a lot of history in Old Towne and we want to complement the great places here and become a standout,” says Amanda Muszynski, Regional Manager. “We love connecting with communities that we’re in and honoring the neighborhoods.”

Culinary Dropout was founded in 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona, by Sam Fox, who created a lively but relaxing atmosphere for customers.

“Culinary Dropout flipped the hospitality rulebook by leaning into music, energy, irreverence, and not taking ourselves too seriously,” says Elisa Cordova, Director of Marketing at Culinary Dropout. “No two visits feel exactly the same.”

The Orange location holds more than 250 indoor seats, with additional patio seating. Inside, the decor features artwork honoring the professional skateboarder Ellen O’Neal and shots from well-known photographer Slim Aarons.

This is the chain’s 16th location nationwide, but only the second in California, with the company looking to expand to new spots that feel intentional and connected to the communities they are in.

strong attention to quality and flavor. The most popular dish is the soft pretzel with provolone fondue, but diners have a wide variety of options, like steak frites, fried chicken, burgers, or even a handful of sushi rolls.

“We have a little bit of something for everyone,” says Muszynski.

“There’s not a palette that we can’t appease, in my opinion.”

The restaurant also has a care-

fully curated beverage program, serving classic cocktails alongside custom drinks like the Campfire Vibes with whiskey, chai-jacked apple cider, Spanish vanilla, and spices.

“There are also a lot of local beers on tap, something that the neighbors will know and love, or people out of town can tour the beer scene through our tap list,” says Muszynski.

The Culinary Dropout team says they chose Old Towne as its latest location because of the rich community bonds, which align with the restaurant’s mission and values.

“Orange has such a strong sense of community, and we’re excited for Culinary Dropout to become part of that fabric. This location gives us the opportunity to connect with a new audience while staying true to who we are,” says Cordova.

When brides walk into Love & Lace Bridal Salon, they won’t find rows of traditional white ball gowns.

Instead, they’ll find statement dresses, including in unexpected colors like black and grey, designed for women who want their wedding day to reflect their personal style.

The boutique opened in Old Towne in late October after 12 years in Irvine, where co-founder Ramona Southard and her husband, Darren, were ready for a change.

“We’d known for a few years that we outgrew our space and wanted to move on to something new and fresh,” says Ramona.

“The area here is beautiful and we love it.”

For Ramona, who grew up in Villa Park, entrepreneurship runs in her blood. Her parents owned a tailor shop, so she spent her childhood surrounded by fashion and alterations. Despite this background, she initially pursued a different path, practicing law for eight years before pivoting.

“I knew I always had the entrepreneurial side that I got from my parents, so when I wasn’t happy practicing law, I decided I wanted to do something for myself,” she says.

Love & Lace Bridal Salon

After buying a few small businesses, Ramona nearly purchased an existing bridal store in Laguna Niguel. At the last minute, she decided to create something entirely her own, and Love & Lace was born.

Ramona has also built a reputation for discovering new designers and giving them a platform, helping to launch their bridal design careers.

The untraditional approach has caught the attention of brides

from around the world.

“We’ve had brides come in from as far as Australia and Japan, not only for our gowns, but also for the experience,” says Store Manager Ashley Harrison, who has been with the shop for eight years. “We want our brides to walk in and feel like they’re home, and I think we’ve done a really good job at that.”

One of the shop’s traditions is taking Polaroid pictures when a bride says yes to the dress, printing one for the bride to keep and another for the shop to display as a memento.

“We meet so many people on a daily basis, and everyone has a story,” says Ramona. “Learning about people and hearing them share their love stories is one of the best parts of my job.”

Guiding Orange Forward From safeguarding the city’s legal footing to balancing the books and keeping neighborhoods safe, three new faces are helping guide Orange forward. City Attorney Nathalie Adourian, City Manager Jarad Hildenbrand and Police Chief Adam Jevec each bring deep local roots, a passion for public service and a hands-on approach to leadership—working every day to protect what makes Orange feel like home.

For City Attorney Nathalie Adourian, protecting Orange isn’t just her work—it’s the community she calls home. After nine years with the City of Orange and an appointment to city attorney last fall, Adourian leads with a philosophy rooted in preparation, collaboration and a deep belief in public service.

“Our philosophy is more proactive,” she says. “I try to stay ahead of the changing regulations and laws.”

Her office—currently a team of six—advises the City Council, and every city department, board and commission. That support includes public works contracts and employment matters to public meetings and ethics training. Her office provides legal advice to decision-makers, ensuring neutrality while supporting informed and lawful outcomes. It’s work that often happens quietly, she notes, but impacts every resident.

“What I value about my role is being behind the scenes making sure ordinances, disciplinary decisions or agreements are legally sound and defensible,” Adourian says.

Adourian’s path to municipal law was unique. Born in France and raised on the island of Martinique, she immigrated to the U.S. at age 13. She earned her undergraduate degree from UC Irvine and completed both a Master’s and Juris Doctor at Pepperdine.

Working in the public sector was always her passion.

“Strong legal systems and thoughtful risk management protect public resources and allow the city to function smoothly,” says City Attorney Nathalie Adourian.

“My priorities are to focus on systems, training, clear procedures and proactive risk management to support reducing liabilities.”

A role with the City of El Monte opened the door. Then in 2016, Adourian joined Orange, rising from risk manager to senior assistant city attorney, and ultimately to the city’s top legal role. Today, she supports major development

projects and internal investigations, while also updating provisions of the Orange Municipal Code and strengthening the city’s risk management systems.

“Having Nathalie has allowed us to perform our duties effectively

and with confidence,” says Code Compliance Manager Rafael Perez, who has worked with Adourian for the past three years from the Community Development Office collaborating on drafting new ordinances or enhancing existing laws, as well as on the enforcement side, such as prosecuting code violations or other administrative actions.

“We’ve written more than five public safety laws in the last three years that have reduced societal effects on the community, such as on graffiti, nitrous oxide and the sale of tobacco to minors,” says Perez.

“These are city codes that Nathalie was instrumental in creating.”

For Adourian, Orange isn’t just where she works—it’s where she has planted roots. She and her husband, Avo, were engaged here, and now raise two children in the community they’ve called home for 15 years.

“I love that I get to positively impact where I live,” she says. “I care deeply about helping ensure the city is well-governed.”

Adourian hopes every resident feels that dedication. “I want every individual who comes in contact with my office to feel like they matter,” she says. “We’re here to help, and we’re all on the same team.”

“I would like to keep Orange stable for the long term,” says City Manager Jarad Hildenbrand. “Part of the job is to look at what’s happening today and try to look into a crystal ball at what will happen in six months, 18 months, five years from now, and charting that path.”

When Jarad Hildenbrand walks into Orange City Hall each morning, he’s not just managing a city, he’s serving the place he has called home since age three.

Appointed City Manager in August 2025, he oversees 710 budgeted positions and a $250 million annual operating budget, including a $150 million general fund.

“I am the CEO of the city,” he says. “The City Council sets the policy, and it’s my job to figure out how to accomplish it. My role is taking their vision and turning it into results that improve people’s daily lives.”

His responsibilities span Public Safety, Community Services, Economic Development, Public Works and Finance.

“There is no typical day,” he says.

“One phone call can completely reshape the priorities. When there’s an emergency or a sink hole, that becomes the focus.”

Known for his openness, Hildenbrand hands out his cell number freely. “If someone in Orange needs help, I want them to feel they can reach me directly.”

Hildenbrand’s roots in Orange run deep. He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran, Cerro Villa, Villa Park High School and Santiago Canyon College. Originally aiming to become a firefighter, he completed the fire academy at 20. But then an internship at the City of Villa Park changed his path.

“I never applied to the fire department after that,” says the father of three and an avid outdoorsman in his free time. “City government clicked for me. I realized I could help shape the future of a whole community.”

He spent 12 years in Villa Park, becoming City Manager at 28, followed by similar roles in La Habra Heights, Stanton and Laguna Hills. But returning to Orange was always his goal.

because he was raised here,” says Pat Buttress, Executive Assistant Field Representative for OC Supervisor Don Wagner. Buttess has known Hildenbrand since his Villa Park internship. “He brings that younger perspective to a very stayed government in a city that has been around 130 years,” she says. “His knowledge of a city’s inner workings combined with his ideas enable him to face the city’s issues and help the community as a whole.”

Today, Hildenbrand is focused on long-term financial stability and public safety.

“I’m a numbers nerd,” he says.

“Strong finances are the foundation for everything else a city provides, especially the ability to deliver reliable public safety and core services.”

Hildenbrand is prioritizing efficiency, reducing plan review times, streamlining development processes and increasing budget transparency. Even as he pushes for thoughtful growth, he notes preserving the city’s character and keeping residents safe remains essential.

“I want to roll out the red carpet for businesses,” he says. “It’s the new Orange way: we are open for business.”

When Adam Jevec was promoted to Chief of Police for the City of Orange in March 2025, he stepped into a role he describes as both strategic and deeply personal.

“Providing the values, the goals and the direction of the department is my main role,” Jevec explains.

“So, when officers get in their police cars to go patrol the city, they know their priorities and expectations.”

That vision is summed up in the department’s value statement: Dedicated to Service. It’s emblazoned on patrol cars and reinforced in daily briefings. Jevec’s leadership style blends advocacy and accessibility on behalf of the department. He regularly attends council meetings, community events and school programs, while also making time to be present within the department.

“I do my best to get into the patrol briefings so officers and professional staff can ask me any question that they want,” says Jevec.

Officer Yash Patel, who also serves as President of the City of Orange Police Officer Association, notes Jevec’s effective communication skills.

“Chief Jevec is communicative, willing to address issues head-on and explain ‘the why,’” says Patel. “He has been very uplifting with the officers, and it goes a long way.”

Jevec emphasizes teamwork and succession planning, noting that his three captains bring more than 80 years of combined experience.

“What I enjoy in my role as Chief is the interactions with our people. I don’t think people think of the police department as accessible and available. If I can show people that I care about the city I live and work in and they feel safer as a result, then that’s a win.”

Looking ahead, Jevec sees technology—like drones and real-time crime centers—as tools to multiply the department’s effectiveness. But at the core, he insists the mission remains unchanged.

“First and foremost, my priority is creating the culture and leadership that everybody wants here,” he says. “We want a culture where our people like being here, they love serving the city and they do it with excellence. It doesn’t matter who is sitting in the chief’s chair,” he says. “When somebody calls the Orange Police, they will know exactly what to expect: exceptional customer service, dedicated to service.”

The Wencel’s introduction to Old Towne came when they visited John’s daughter, who had purchased a nearby home in 2020.

“We went to Avila’s El Ranchito restaurant and fell in love with the neighborhood as we sat outside and dined,” says Sheri. “Our daughter

later spotted the home for sale and told us about it. It had good bones, but it had been through a lot. We could see the potential and decided to take it on.”

3. Appropriated the $35,829 in parking revenue collected from the parking structure on North Lemon during the Street Fair to the General Fund.

4. Accepted the donation of 50 automated external defibrillators

for the police department from the Orange Police Foundation.

5. Held a discussion on considering a few possible tweaks to the city’s Safe and Sane Fireworks program (rules regarding fireworks sales booths —how chosen, how many, etc.).

sorority house for almost two decades. Through the years, the home’s original layout had been completely reconfigured—much of the natural flow blocked by walls, room additions, extraneous doors and narrow hallways.

Although most of the original windows, doors and wood trim were still intact, the original floorplan was a mystery. The extensive renovation took nine months.

“I had completely remodeled our house in San Diego, so I knew I could probably tackle this one

relatively easily, but it turned out to be a lot more than we expected,” admits John.

The couple worked with the Old Towne Preservation Association to find out what they would need to do to receive an official historicdesignation bronze plaque. John did a deep dive into the home’s history.

According to records at the archives in Santa Ana, the original owner was John Syester, a farmer from Connecticut. In the 1800s, he settled in Iowa, and met his

wife, Rachel. He joined the U.S. Army for a few years, and then came to Orange to work in the orange fields.

“He became a real estate guy and had three or four more homes built as rentals,” says John.

“He was 65 when he built this house. His son Bill built a house two years later on Olive Street just a half block away.”

Interestingly, that shared history led to unexpected connections when the current owners of Bill’s house came to visit the Wencels

and noticed their bronze plaque on the exterior.

“They had no idea the two homes were related until they saw the plaque,” says John.

Although the remodel was a daunting undertaking, John, who retired in 2010, is no stranger to ambitious projects—having been an offshore mechanical engineer who designed and built underwater robotics.

“I think my engineering background really helped,” he says.

8. Heard a proposal to combine the May Parade, the Taste of Orange and the Orange Plaza Car Show into one weekend event, held in the Plaza. The City Council was favorable to the proposal.

9. Adopted a Resolution amending the city’s Safe and Sane Fireworks program, primarily relating to the selection and time periods for the

nonprofits running the fireworks booths (changed from one year to two years).

10. Heard a report on the city’s first quarter revenues and expenditures.

What they wanted was a home that felt true to its Craftsman roots.

Over the years, the house had been everything from a private residence to apartments to even a churchowned property, and of course a sorority house. At one point, the attic had been divided into living spaces. The home had two electric meters, and nearly every door had a deadbolt.

“There were three doors going into one bathroom,” Sheri laughs.

“We counted eight extra doors, including a mystery door that opened into the master bathroom from the outside. We have heard

stories from neighbors about when this was a sorority house.

Apparently, the floor had been rebuilt after it collapsed during a dance party. We met one of the girls. She said she remembered all the fun times in this house.”

The nine-month renovation revealed just how much work lay beneath the surface. The upstairs ceiling sagged nearly five inches.

Sewer lines had to be replaced.

Walls came down, plumbing was redone, and structural beams were reinforced. What was once a small living room and parlor in the front of the house now unfolds into one room.

the kitchen by removing a hallway bathroom, they uncovered one of the home’s greatest features: a fully intact brick chimney running from the basement to the roof.

“The chimney was completely buried inside a wall,” says John.

“All original brick.”

Today, the exposed chimney stands as the focal point in the kitchen, alongside Shaker-style cabinetry, floor-to-ceiling pantries,

a built-in coffee bar and a rolling library ladder to reach the upper shelves. A hickory butcher block tops the kitchen island, and modern appliances blend into the design.

Meanwhile, the huge basement now serves as a crafts room with work benches and a movie theater.

There’s even a popcorn machine for their grandkids. John spends time in the basement building complex remote-control airplanes, a hobby he takes to a park in Irvine for flight time.

Outside, a Craftsman-style fence encloses the yard while raised garden beds grace the backyard.

The massive Ficus tree out front—visible in aerial photos from the 1920s—shades the house and keeps it cool in the summer.

The Wencels have quickly become part of the fabric of Old Towne. Sheri stays busy with the

finished to passersby, the Wencels insist it’s a work in progress. John recently replaced five non-original window panes with reproduction wavy glass. He did all the glazing himself. Additionally, he plans to update some of the fencing in the near future.

Now that they’ve improved the “curb appeal” of the previously unattractive property, the Wencels have done more than just restore a historic home—they have become a part of its next chapter, all while making memories with neighbors, family and friends.

“Four years in, Old Towne feels like our community,” says Sheri.

“We love the small-town vibes here.

There’s really no place like it anywhere in Southern California.”

For Halloween, the house earned neighborhood recognition as “scariest house” for their haunted gardens décor. Their Christmas decorations are always festive and extensive.

“We go a little crazy with our holiday decorations,” Sheri admits.

Life in Old Towne includes walks to the Plaza for shopping and dining, or hanging out with Otto, the pug, on the wraparound porch, John’s favorite spot in the house.

“I sit out there long enough so that people who walk by will wave,” he says. “That’s Old Towne.”

When Tessa Jones had the opportunity to attend recruitment fairs as a student at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management, she chose to skip those offering an avenue to guaranteed placement at a Fortune 500 company once she graduated and did something “completely crazy, instead.”

Rather than take the proven path, Chapman University’s Vice President of Event Operations says, while other students were getting paid internships at local companies such as General Mills, she took an unpaid internship at the Ordway Center for Performing Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota.

“At that internship, I fell in love with live events,” says Jones.

“It was so fun to meet the performers and feel the adrenaline— onstage and behind the scenes—as everyone worked together to deliver a performance. I also found it deeply rewarding to be part of an organization that benefited the community.”

That combination of creativity, collaboration and purpose had been a part of Jones’s life long before college. She grew up in Hazen, a small town in North Dakota, where she graduated at the top of her high school class and immersed herself in activities ranging from Future Business Leaders of America to music and drama.

Ideal Career Path Her out-of-the-box decision in college put Jones on a career path that suited her perfectly. After completing her internship at the Ordway Center in 2005 and earning a BSB in Entrepreneurial Management and Management Information Systems from the Carlson School of Management in 2006, she accepted her first professional position at the arts organization, Schubert Club, in St. Paul, Minnesota. She would spend the next 13 years there in a variety of roles, including Marketing and Ticketing Manager, before advancing to Director of Marketing.

Turning Celebration into

A Local Museum to Keep

Communities Safe Back in the 1970s, when Orange native Randy Marsile was a young firefighter, Southern California fire engines didn’t have enclosed cabs. Instead, crews rode in open-air trucks—what Marsile now describes as “convertible” fire engines.

“At the time, it seemed cool to have a convertible fire engine,” says Marsile, a retired Fire Captain with the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) and Fire Management Representative for Southern California Edison. “Although, it wasn’t much fun in 90degree weather when we were fighting a brush fire and had nowhere to get out of the heat for a while.”

Visitors can soon look forward to exploring various types of fire safety history and fire service heritage at the Call to Adventure at the California Fire Museum and Safety Learning Center.

Located in Old Towne at the historic fire station at 176 South Grand St.—which served the community for many years before moving operations to East Chapman Ave.—the museum will offer an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages.

“Being in the former Orange Fire Station 1 in Old Towne is an exciting opportunity for the museum, as the area already draws numerous residents for shopping and dining,” says Hiddo Horlings, President of the Call to Adventure Fire Museum and Safety Learning Center and a retired Fire Captain with OCFA. “We are very grateful to have an agreement with the City of Orange to occupy the space.”

In the front of the museum, visitors are invited into a fascinating look at the history of the fire service in Orange County.

“Museum visitors will be able to see historic fire engines and equipment from the past and learn that fire engines were pulled by people more than a century ago,” says Marsile. “Once they reached a fire, crews pumped water from nearby sources like creeks. Horse-drawn fire wagons came next, and by around 1915 to 1920, fire engines became motorized.”

After exploring the history of fire service, visitors will have the opportunity to shift their focus to modern fire safety and prevention.

A key feature is the OCFA simulator trailer, which offers hands-on, interactive exhibits.

“We’ve all had moments where a little knowledge could have prevented an emergency or mitigated the situation,” says Horlings.

“The simulation trailer will give visitors the chance to practice what to do in a range of real-life scenarios.” The scenarios will include how to respond to kitchen and barbecue fires, how to safely check a door before opening it during a fire, and discovering the importance of gas and electrical safety.

“It’s commonplace for people to feel comfortable where they live and to take the safety of their homes for granted. It is their home,” shares Angela Garbiso, Director of Communications for Call To Adventure, who was a Community Fire Education Specialist for Orange County Fire Authority for eight years.

“Call to Adventure Fire Museum will encourage visitors to plan ahead for when there is an emergency,” she says. “For instance, we do fire drills at work and school, so why not at home? It’s also a good idea to have an escape plan and outside meeting place if there is a fire in your home. If you live or even work in a wildland urban interface 16

From pageantry to hometown traditions, the Orange Chamber of Commerce Foundation will present three of the city’s largest community events in 2026, including the Miss Orange Scholarship Pageant, the Duke of Orange and the Orange May Parade, all aimed at raising funds to support Orange’s youth.

The Orange Chamber of Commerce Foundation operates with the belief that all children deserve the opportunity to thrive.

The recently revived nonprofit organization has raised money to provide grants and resources for underprivileged children in the community. While the Orange Chamber of Commerce focuses on strengthening the city’s local economy, the Foundation works toward building a supportive environment for the children of Orange.

After serving the Orange Chamber of Commerce for eight years, Angelyn Catale-Wojdat, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, was among those who recognized the need for a charitable arm focused on the kids of Orange.

“We wanted to do something

to help the kids and families in need,” says Catale-Wojdat.

That goal is carried out through year-round fundraising, including a monthly Bingo Night, held on the second Wednesday of each month at Green Cheek Beer Co. in Orange. Proceeds benefit a rotating group of local charities, including the Youth Centers of Orange in December.

The Orange Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s events reflect a broader goal of uniting the Orange community . . .

Beyond monthly bingo, the Foundation also oversees several of Orange’s most recognizable community events, including the Miss Orange Scholarship Pageant and the Duke of Orange.

the program for more than 20 years. She says the experience offers young women opportunities they may not find elsewhere.

“I watch them blossom from day one,” Benson says. “It is a year of such growth.”

Participants develop interview and interpersonal skills, and in addition to receiving a $5,000 scholarship, Miss Orange serves as the city’s official ambassador and May Queen—a role residents look forward to seeing at community events.

A similar honor exists for men through the Duke of Orange, another tradition overseen by the Orange Chamber of Commerce

Foundation.

“Being the Duke let me go to different events I could take my kids to so they can have a sense of giving and learning about community and volunteering,” says Adrian Olmos, the reigning Duke of Orange. He says the visibility that came with the role encouraged him to pursue further civic service, including a planned run for City Council this year.

This year will also mark the first time the Foundation oversees the popular Orange May Parade.

now serves as Parade Chair for the Orange Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Holloman says fond childhood memories of the parade inspired her to bring it back for future generations. “Anything that we can do to help support the children in our community so that they have that same feeling that I had of wanting to stay and feel bonded,” she says.

The Foundation has also received city approval to combine the Orange May Parade, The Taste of Orange and the annual Orange Plaza Rotary Car Show into a single weekend celebration titled

Celebrate Orange! The special event, taking place the first weekend of May, will be in partnership with two other great organizations —the Assistance League of Orange, Orange Blossoms Auxiliary, which presents the Taste of Orange, and the Orange Plaza Rotary, which hosts the car show.

The Orange Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s events reflect a broader goal of uniting the Orange community, while investing in its young residents. Through fundraising, volunteer leadership and Orange pride, the Foundation turns celebration into community support.

Cabinets of Wonder:

Currently on view at the Hilbert Museum of California Art, Cabinets of Wonder: The Art of Ralph Allen Massey, is an exhibition that captures the irreverent imagination of one of Southern California’s most distinctive and enduring visual artists. With a career spanning more than six decades, Massey has been a singular presence in the Los Angeles art world—an artist whose work blurs the boundaries between fine art, pop culture iconography and nostalgic memory.

In this exhibition, which runs through May 30, the Hilbert showcases a vibrant selection of his oil paintings alongside a small but compelling group of his inventive sculptures, offering museumgoers a deep dive into his witty, collage-like universe.

Massey was born in California in 1938, coincidentally the same year superhero comics like Superman were beginning to capture the public’s imagination. His life and art have grown in tandem with the visual culture of postwar America. Over the course of more than 60 years as a practicing artist, he has carved out an instantly

In his dazzling compositions, he assembles fragments of cultural history—from vintage toys and comic book heroes to movie posters, pin-ups, military memorabilia, cars and other iconic imagery—into tableaus that invite both laughter and contemplation.

“For many viewers, the pleasure of Massey’s work lies in its storytelling quality,” says Hilbert Museum Director Mary Platt.

“There are visual narratives that unfold with each careful glance— characters and objects that seem to speak, to reference distant moments in time, yet remain quite familiar. The stories are not always obvious, and that’s part of the artist’s genius. Each piece is a visual riddle that rewards time spent with it.”

At first glance, Massey’s paintings might appear to be exuberant mashups of pop culture and kitsch.

begin to see the deeper structure at play: images that function like personal and collective memory cabinets, each element positioned with a storyteller’s precision, each visual joke or reference layered with meaning.

arrange them as though they were chunks of color I’m putting on the board. Once I’ve arranged them in my layout, I’m ready to go ahead with the painting. I wanted to suggest that the main character might not be a very good juggler, and that they have taken on more than they can handle.“ Another work in the show, Alice, pays tribute to Arthur Rackham (1867-1939), a British artist who famously illustrated one of the most well-known editions of Alice in Wonderland in 1907. “One of his illustrations shows Alice being attacked by playing cards,” says Massey. “As I looked at his work, I immediately pictured it having openings, so the cards appear to be floating, putting them all on different angles.”

Flying A is part of a series of works by Massey that include aviation signage. “Here I include the actress Zendaya,” he says. “I found a photo of her dancing, and it looked as if she was wishing to go airborne. Maybe I should have titled this work Flying Z!” Another photograph that inspired Massey was one of a young Chinese boy standing in a field, from an old National Geographic magazine, which became his painting Boy. “He’s

obviously so proud, showing off his giant radish,” Massey says. “I could project myself into that moment and enjoy the experience he was having.”

So, these works are not simply nostalgic; they are analytic and inventive. They probe the way everyday objects, images and cultural icons shape our ideas of identity and history.

Massey’s approach has affinities with both surrealist collage and the pop art movement, but he resists easy categorization. Rather than adhere to the detached irony sometimes associated with pop art, his works are affectionate and engaged, even celebratory. He manipulates and redefines familiar imagery, juxtaposing elements associated with high art alongside objects of popular or commercial culture, breathing new life into both. This blend of high and low, serious and playful, has made his oeuvre compelling for collectors and museums alike.

Massey’s long career has included numerous exhibitions throughout California and beyond.

Solo exhibitions like 60 Years of Art at bG Gallery in Santa Monica have revisited his expansive body of work. His art has appeared in other prominent venues, including the Petersen Automotive Museum and Skidmore Contemporary Art, among others.

Mark Hilbert, Founder of the Hilbert Museum, observes that Massey’s work “appeals to museumgoers because it doesn’t just hang on the wall—it invites you into a conversation. You see pieces of your own cultural experience reflected back at you, and that creates a powerful connection.”

“Schubert Club was a fairly small organization, which meant I had the opportunity to learn the inner workings of the organization, and that has helped me in my career,” says Jones, who also served on many boards while there. “I gained a comprehensive understanding of all facets of the organization and had a great boss who still inspires me today.” While working at Schubert Club, Jones earned her MBA from the University of St. Thomas’ Opus College of Business in Minneapolis.

While Jones was happy and fulfilled at the Schubert Club, an unexpected opportunity emerged in 2018 when she received an out-of-the-blue call from a recruiter about a position at Chapman University.

“They were looking to start a new ticketing department when Musco Center was still fairly new,” she says. “They needed someone with complex, niche experience in ticketing, leadership and collaboration within the performing arts. It truly felt like a position made for me.”

Heading West to Chapman The offer presented a difficult decision for Jones and her husband, Ryan, whom she met during her internship at the Ordway. “Leaving the Schubert Club meant giving up a job I loved and moving across the country with young children,” she says.

“At the time, our oldest was three and we had an infant. We were also leaving behind a strong extended family support system.”

Still, the idea of Southern California—and leaving Minnesota winters behind—was appealing. Once the family visited Chapman’s campus and walked through Old Towne, they felt confident in their choice.

“It only took minutes for us to fall in love with the small-town feel and walkability,” says Jones, who now lives in Old Towne, where her three children attend St. John’s Lutheran School. “We do miss our family in Minnesota, but we go back regularly.”

When Jones joined Chapman, she hit the ground running.

“My first position was Director of Ticketing Services, which meant building a ticketing department from the ground up,” she says.

That included establishing a budget, hiring a team, implementing a new ticketing system and migrating existing data.

Within five months, Jones had put an advanced ticketing operation in place—hiring five full-time staff members and 30 student workers, creating job descriptions, purchasing uniforms and developing standard operating procedures. The team was fully prepared for the 2020 season when the pandemic forced operations to pause. Once campus events resumed, momentum quickly returned, and Jones was named Vice President of the newly consolidated events department.

Award-Winning Ticketing Services The system Jones and her team built proved so effective that, in January 2025, Chapman University Ticketing Services received the International Ticketing Association’s 2025 Outstanding Ticket Office Award.

“Since her arrival, Tessa has elevated how we think about and deliver event operations at Chapman,” says Brian Thomason, Interim Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Chapman University. “She has done an exceptional job leading a team of event professionals dedicated to ensuring students have access to spaces that are central to the Chapman experience. She and her team also serve as ambassadors to the community and the thousands of visitors we welcome each year through events, speaker series and other campus programs.”

Jones and her department oversee an impressive volume of events each year at Chapman. The university manages roughly 25,000 space reservations annually, including 850 large-scale events with 250 or more attendees. Of those, about 500 are ticketed, accounting for approximately 130,000 tickets each year.

“People often don’t realize just how many events Chapman hosts for the community,” says Jones. “From high-caliber performances by students and professionals at Musco Center to exhibitions and programs at the Hilbert Museum of California Art, there’s always something happening on campus.”

Chapman’s Vice President of Community Relations, Alisa Driscoll, notes the central role Jones plays in connecting the university with the broader community. “Tessa’s support of Chapman’s community involvement can’t be overstated,” says Driscoll. “When we host events on campus, such as the Orange Chamber’s State of the City, it’s her team that leads the logistics.

We simply couldn’t support our community partners the way we do without their dedication. On a personal level, I admire Tessa’s kindness, collaborative spirit and genuine care for the well-being of our students, staff, faculty and the larger community.”

Chris Hutchison, who has worked with Jones on several student event–related initiatives, echoes Driscoll’s sentiments.

“I’ve always been impressed by how Tessa approaches every conversation from a place of genuine care,” says Hutchison.

“She listens to fully understand all the layers involved and asks thoughtful questions to clarify the scope of an event or challenge. She balances policy, logistics, details and constraints while still moving conversations and events forward. That’s not something I take for granted, especially given the volume she manages daily. She’s a creative, critical thinker who never loses sight of the deeper purpose and impact of each event.”

For Jones, while supporting thousands of Chapman events— and especially the live performances she loves—remains central to her role, what matters most is the impact those moments have on students. She sees events not simply as logistics to be managed, but as experiences that influence students’ lives.

“I know how instrumental events can be for students, even shaping who they become as adults,” she says. “Being able to make that kind of impact is incredibly rewarding.”

In many ways, it’s the same instinct that led her to make a “completely crazy” choice as a college student, guided by the belief that meaningful experiences often matter more than guaranteed outcomes.

Novel Born of a Ghost Story Anchors Chapman Book Club Event

On a frigid November night along the shoreline of south Quebec’s St. Lawrence River, Cheryl Gale found inspiration in a ghost story surrounding an old sea captain and a murderer.

The story haunted Gale so much that she turned it into a historical fiction novel called The Fateful Voyage of the Empress of Ireland, published in October 2024 by FriesenPress. The book is the focus of Chapman University’s next Town & Gown “Bound by Books” book club gathering on January 29.

“There are many themes in the book that make for great discussion,” says Valerie Smith, chair of Town & Gown events. “I have no doubt there will be lots to discuss. Having the author attend our discussions enriches our get togethers immensely.”

Smith, a longtime fan of book clubs, developed Bound By Books because she felt it would be a great forum for community engagement.

“I have been involved in book clubs for more than 25 years, with various groups of friends,” she says. “When I joined Town & Gown several years ago and was tasked with developing new programming ideas for the group, I immediately thought of a book club.”

Bound by Books, launched in January, showcases Chapman and Orange County authors. The meetings provide a richer experience than standard book clubs, giving attendees meaningful opportunities to hear directly from the authors, Smith says. The group supports Chapman’s efforts to strengthen its relationship with the surrounding community.

Most members are from the surrounding Chapman community, but the group also hopes to gather members among Chapman students and university employees.

Town & Gown President Susie Willits, a member of Bound by Books and retired Chapman faculty member, enjoys the gatherings for their interesting literary discussions, but also because of the various settings where meetings take place.

“Bound by Books is the brainchild of Valerie and has been very successful, as well as fun,” Willits says. “I’ve been able to attend most of the meetings. My favorites were the ones during the summer, where we went to a local restaurant to discuss the books.”

For the upcoming event, the organization will meet at the historic Chapel of Orange at 215 North Grand St. The Gothic-inspired 1909 building was previously known as Trinity Episcopal Church. Gale and her husband purchased the property from Chapman University in 2014, renovated it and began renting it out for church services, weddings, funerals and film productions.

Gale says she enjoys speaking at book clubs because people who attend focus on the book and the characters rather than her personal experiences and background. But her personal experiences do influence the book in some ways, she says.

“Perhaps the hardest scene for me to write was near the end of the book when the captain was dying, as my own mother who I was caring for was dying at the same time in much the same way,” she says.

She hopes that readers will find empathy for all the characters of the book and realize that everyone is trying to do their best in this life.

“My hope is that the readers will finish the book feeling both moved and uplifted, knowing that even in the darkness of tragedy, there remains compassion,” Gale says.

A resident of Orange since 1988, Maureen Cardenas has deep roots in the community.

Even as a teenager growing up in nearby Santa Ana, she spent time in the Plaza attending events like the Street Fair.

Cardenas appreciates how Orange continues to change while maintaining its character. She especially enjoys seeing younger families moving into the area. “I would love things to stay small, but I know you have to have growth,” she says.
