Dear Lancer Community,
Welcome to the 2025/26 arts season at Orange Lutheran High School! For more than 50 years, the Lord has done marvelous things at Lutheran High School of Orange County. Since 2003, the Nechita Center has been a place where the talents, skills, and abilities of our students have been joyfully displayed. Through these gifts, and under the guidance of talented and creative teachers, directors, technical directors, and leaders, the Lord continues to use the Arts program to share the eternal message of salvation found in Jesus Christ with students, parents, donors, and the greater Lancer community. At Orange Lutheran, we believe it is entirely possible to remain faithful to Jesus Christ, our Savior, while pursuing and achieving excellence in the arts.
Whether you are enjoying a musical, concert, play, art exhibit, recital, or lecture, it is wonderful to attend an event in the Nechita Center. It’s not the space that makes the event special, but rather the dedication, hard work, and diligence of faithful students and leaders who pour themselves into each production. This year, hundreds of students will participate in the events that take place in “the Nechita”. They will sing, dance, play instruments, act, draw, create, and use their amazing abilities, gifts, and skills.
The Fall Concert opened our season this year, followed closely by Catch Me If You Can. Before we knew it, Christmas arrived, and we celebrated the birth of our Savior with instruments, song, and dance. A fan favorite production of Charlotte’s Web led us into a vocal concert of Let’s Go to the Movies. The Dance Student Showcase stepped up just before we ventured Into the Woods. Truthfully, it’s difficult to choose my favorite between the Instrumental Student Showcase and The Best of Broadway. A highlight of the year is our amazing Annual Art Show in May, where our visual arts are on full display. Finally, be sure to save the date for Night of Worship! We close the year being reminded of the work of our Master Artist who has created and designed each of us in His image, to the Glory of God.

INSTRUMENTAL STUDENT SHOWCASE 2026

Welcome to Orange Lutheran's annual Instrumental Student Showcase, representing months of dedication, growth, and artistry. Tonight’s performance is a celebration not only of musical achievement, but of the perseverance, creativity, and leadership of our students.
This year has been an exceptional one for our instrumental program. Our ensembles have participated in multiple festivals and competitions, earning remarkable recognition for their hard work. Our Percussion Ensemble captured a first-place award, demonstrating both technical excellence and musical maturity. Our String Ensemble received a Superior rating, reflecting their precision, tone, and expressive performance; and our Wind Ensemble was awarded an Excellent rating, showcasing their continued growth and commitment to musical excellence. These accomplishments are a testament to the countless hours our students have invested in rehearsals, sectionals, and individual practice.
What makes tonight especially meaningful is the level of student involvement in every aspect of the performance. From repertoire selection to small ensemble direction, students have taken an active role in shaping this evening. In particular, we are proud to feature several student conductors and a composition by senior Hudson Dexter. Providing students with opportunities to lead is a central part of our program’s mission. Watching them grow in confidence, develop their leadership skills, and take ownership of their musical experiences is one of the most rewarding aspects of this work.
Finally, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to those who make this program possible. Thank you to Dr. Mary Scott, Dr. Jack Preus, Morgan Perez, and the entire Orange Lutheran faculty and staff for their unwavering support of the arts. Your commitment creates an environment where students can thrive creatively and academically. I would also like to thank our Instrumental Music families. The field trip to Azusa Pacific and meeting Dr. Berdett, my favorite guest/teacher we’ve interacted with. It was really cool to notice a lot of the habits Mr. Z picked up from him, since he was once Dr. Berdett’s student.
Favorite Instrumental Music song: "Waltz" (I don’t quite remember the writer, but it's the one we played at the UCI Bren Center a year or two ago).
Plans for next year: Study Data Science at the University of California, Irvine.

Favorite OLu Instrumental Music memory: Freshman year combined Christmas at the Nechita concert. It was really chaotic having so many dancers, singers, and instrumentalists on stage at the same time. That experience was really memorable for me due to the thrill of being onstage with so many moving elements. I also enjoyed having time backstage to bond with others. It really anchored me with the program and community.
Favorite Instrumental Music song: "Firm Foundation" (*wink wink*), "In a Sentimental Mood," "Strange Humors," and semester duets and chamber pieces from Rachmaninoff and Schubert with Ava O'Donnell.
Plans for next year: I'm planning to double major in Molecular Biology and Music at Pomona College or Vanderbilt University.
Instrument: I’ve been part of the string ensemble for 4 years alternating between violin, cello, and piano whenever it’s needed in the program! I also played in Jazz Band, Combo, and yearly Gala quartets.
