DEAR FRIENDS IN CHRIST, Through God’s amazing Grace, Orange Lutheran has enjoyed another outstanding year. As of this writing, we have record enrollment with over 1,360 full-time students. Further, another 600+ students from around the world are impacted by Orange Lutheran Online. Every one of these students is taught by a teacher that is fully engaged in “helping students internalize the Gospel message of salvation in Christ Jesus”.

Academically, our school has continued to excel at this highest level. Not only do our test scores far exceed state and national levels, our students attend some of the most prestigious universities in the country. Coupled with our Department of Special Programs and Services, we are committed to ministering to the entire family.

In arts and athletics, our students continue to rack up national awards performing and competing at the highest levels in the nation.

Financially, our school has never been in a stronger position. While awarding a record $2.3 million in financial aid, we continue to accumulate cash reserves

while reducing debt. To all of our friends and donors – thank you! Your sacrifice is making a difference in the Gospel today – and preparing us for the future.

Orange Lutheran students are making a difference in our community, churches and in the marketplace. God has placed on our heart a vision to allow more students to become Lancers and we are actively searching for ways to make that happen. Because of the challenges of space in Orange County, this is not an easy ask. We are exploring many opportunities for growth and are preparing ourselves to operate in a multi-campus environment.

God’s hand of blessing will be needed to achieve some of these great dreams, but we believe He is leading us towards His plans of blessing more students for the Gospel. It will take many miracles along the way – and all of us doing what we can to make the dream a reality.

Weathering the Storm In November, more than 150 Orange Lutheran alumni and students spent a week in Houston to aid in recovery efforts following Hurricane Harvey.

Volunteers helped restore more than 30 homes that were affected. They served in partnership with four local churches, as well as The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, to not only rebuild homes, but rebuild lives.

In June, alumni, staff, faculty, friends and family gathered in the Ellwein Center to celebrate the 43year ministry of Miss Nancy Paul upon her Annual Report retirement.

T

rent Rush ’10, host of AM830’s Angels Recap post-game show, served as emcee and welcomed multiple guest speakers to the stage to honor Miss Paul. Speakers included former football coach Jim Kunau, former Boys Basketball Head Coach Shawn Cassidy, former Principal and Executive Director Gregg Pinick, and Bev Arnett, who coached multiple girls teams. Former Boys Basketball Head Coach Jerry Simmons and former football coach Chuck Petersen addressed the crowd through pre-recorded messages.

“Nancy Paul is a role model for all ages, consistently exhibiting the traits of our Lord,” Arnett said to the audience. “[She] is a finely tuned instrument of our loving God.”

During the ceremony, Athletics Advancement Coordinator Chris Nordstrom announced that the number 43 has been retired from all sports in her honor.

All net proceeds from the event were donated to the Nancy Paul Teaching Scholarship, which was created in 2008. It honors the legacy of its namesake by providing financial aid to a graduating senior from Orange Lutheran who intends to pursue a career in education. The scholarship recipient, chosen by a committee following successful submission of an essay, application, and completion of an interview, receives a $1,000 scholarship upon enrollment in the college of his or her choice and additional money for their student teaching semester.

Redefining the High School Experience FROM THE DESK OF THE HEAD OF SCHOOL My love for Orange Lutheran extends far beyond my professional role as Head of School, and what I love most may be summed up in just two words: Purpose and People - and Christ and His love are at the heart of both.

Preparing our students for college is an important objective, yet we recognize that we have a much greater role. Committed to the health and psychological well-being of all learners, redefining the high school experience is about people not just building profiles. By engaging students through the integration of social emotional learning and a focus on increased emotional intelligence, we are preparing healthy, strong, caring people to thrive in life beyond graduation. As a result, empathy, respect, mindfulness, resilience, and connectedness are key ingredients in The OLu Experience. These qualities produce healthier outcomes and ensure positive social interactions, stronger relationships, greater school spirit, and higher achievement.

Because the culture of American education today has become so hyper-focused on building the perfect college profile, most schools place an emphasis on grades, test scores, and awards to the exclusion of people skills, values, and character; the results have not been good. In fact, excessive achievement pressure to build the perfect profile has resulted in higher rates of stress, sleep deprivation, anxiety, and depression, and as students graduate from high school and college, many have learned how to “do school,� but they are not necessarily well-prepared for life.

During the 2017-2018 school year, we continued our ongoing efforts to redefine the high school experience by increasing emotional intelligence, also known as EQ. Research indicates that more than any other factor, including ambition, IQ, and academic achievement, EQ is considered the greatest single predictor of success after graduation. Emotional intelligence is about being smart with emotions - our own and how we respond to the emotions of others. As a result, our efforts to increase EQ, including selfawareness, self-management, empathy, and social skills, are reaping rewards daily.

Specifically, this past year, we focused on selfawareness and empathy, which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

All of our students, faculty, and staff took a personality assessment, so they are better able to understand their personality traits and strengths, as well as their communication and learning styles. By first understanding ourselves, we are better equipped to respond and empathize with others. At Orange Lutheran, we recognize that empathy evokes good feelings and positive emotions, including curiosity, openness, appreciation, and gratitude, all qualities that enhance health, well-being, personal strengths, and relationships. We also see that empathy reduces stress, fosters resilience, unites, and breeds courage. On our campus, empathy is transforming conflict, creating stronger interpersonal connections, strengthening teams, and increasing collaboration and negotiation skills.

We also added yoga to our course offerings, and we welcomed a new member to our Lancer Family - Marty, a beautiful golden retriever (pictured on opposite page), professionally trained as a service dog to provide comfort to our students.

ORANGE LUTHERAN IS REDEFINING THE HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE, A MOVEMENT TO CHANGE THE CULTURE OF AMERICAN EDUCATION. For me, redefining the high school experience is about personalized authentic learning and equipping students with the tools needed to thrive in life. It is about replacing fear with hope and the blessings unique to our Christian faith.

Orange Lutheran continues to be the best high school for my family, and I believe it is the best for yours, too. Disneyland Resort Dreamers and Doers celebrates the “power of possibility” by recognizing Orange County high school students who are improving their communities and schools through four focus areas: Strengthen Communities, Think Creatively, Conserve Nature and Live Healthier.

Writer, an Eagle Scout, was one of five students to be honored with a Luminary Award at the celebration and earned $3,000 for the nonprofit of

his choice, as well as a weekend at the Disneyland Resort. He was also recognized as a Shining Star and received a $1,000 grant for Orange Lutheran.

In Fall 2017, Writer was interviewed about his designs by Philippe Cousteau, Jr. (grandson of explorer and conservationist Jacques Cousteau) for use in educational materials for STEM classes across the country.

“As a teacher, it is awesome to see a student engaged outside of the classroom in a service project that incorporates their passions in school.

In CJ’s case, that is science,” says STEM Academy Director Jill Ronstadt, who instructed CJ in Honors Molecular Genetics and AP Biology.

“I know CJ will be a productive citizen and contribute to his community in the future.”

R

ecent graduate CJ Writer ’18 was honored at the Disneyland Resort’s Dreamers and Doers Celebration for his water-wise garden designs, which were adopted by the City of Anaheim’s Lenain Water Treatment Facility. In addition to beautifying the area, Writer’s garden serves as a demonstration site where visitors can learn about environmentally conscious gardening.

Choir in Carnegie In March, members of Orange Lutheran’s Honors Choir and Honors Women’s Chorus performed at Carnegie Hall with the National Festival Chorus before a sold-out audience. During their time in New York City, students experienced a private, backstage tour of Radio City Music Hall, attended Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and had a Master Class with Beautiful star Kevin Duda and musical director Benjamin Rauhala.

Guided by Visual Arts teachers Kate Doss and Dawn Hamby, three Lancers were selected as Visual Arts semi-finalists in the Orange County Register’s 2018 Artist of the Year competition.

The competition honors students who excel in a variety of artistic disciplines and received more than 575 nominations in 2018. Orange Lutheran students have been honored in multiple visual and performing arts categories every year since the award’s inception five years ago.

ast fall, Orange Lutheran’s Performing Arts Academy welcomed Grammy Awardwinning and two-time Academy Award nominated songwriter Siedah Garrett, who taught a Master Class exclusively for Academy students.

Master Classes combine interactive learning, experiential activities, personal assessments, and techniques to equip young artists. Visits from industry professionals offer OLu students an intimate perspective of the industry and the possibilities within their craft.

Orange Lutheran’s production of Cinderella was selected to perform during the MACY (Music and Arts Commendation for Youth) Award ceremony held at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in June. The production, including director Chelsey Everhart ’05, received the award for “Twist on a Timeless Classic” and twenty cast members were honored by the MACY Award judges for their performances. Smile, the story of the fictional Young American Miss Pageant, garnered MACY Award Best Actress nominations for Anysa Wilson ’19 and Madison Miller ’21, as well as a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Katrina Reta ’20. Sixteen cast and crew members also received special recognition from the MACY Award judges.

Behind the scenes, Johnathan Haaland ’18 earned the MACY Award for Best Projection Design by a Student, as well as a scholarship.

Haaland is studying Theatre with an emphasis in Design and Technical Production at Concordia University Irvine.

OLU LACROSSE COMING SPRING 2019 Orange Lutheran Athletics is excited to welcome lacrosse to campus beginning in spring 2019.

Veteran lacrosse coaches Michael Finley and Alexandra Kyte will help build the program from the ground up.

Finley, who serves as Lacrosse Director and will coach the boys team, brings extensive experience to OLu’s new program, as he previously served as Director of Lacrosse at Sage Hill High School in Newport Beach and has also coached teams at University of Dallas and Foothill High School in Tustin. He is a graduate of Southern Methodist University, where he played defense and midfield on their club lacrosse team.

“Coach Finley brings a wealth of knowledge to our lacrosse program as a player and coach,” says Paul Jones ’02, Athletic Director. “His experience, knowledge, Christian leadership, and coaching style will enable our program to attract students and have future success.”

In addition to launching lacrosse, Finley is also the director of Orange Lutheran’s Business Academy, which prepares students with the values and skills they need to be effective Christians in the business world.

Alexandra Kyte has been named as Girls Lacrosse Coach and is excited for the opportunity to build the program. “I am overjoyed to be joining the Orange Lutheran family and introducing the sport of lacrosse to its community,” says Kyte.

Kyte is no stranger to the development of new teams, as she was part of the inaugural lacrosse program at El Dorado High School in Placentia. She also previously served as the Head Coach at El Toro, Beckman, and Portola high schools. A graduate of Concordia University Irvine, Alexandra played on their lacrosse team and was a three-time, first team All-American, All-League, and division point leader.

“One of Coach Kyte’s dreams was to be a part of starting lacrosse here at OLu,” says Jones. “She brings a great Christian spirit of teamwork and has coached and improved various programs.”

Orange Lutheran is committed to teaching student-athletes the core values of Christian character development, and the coaches seek to be transformational for Christ and pursue victory with honor for the sake of growing the kingdom.

“Lacrosse will push Orange Lutheran and our athletics program forward by providing an additional opportunity for our students to have a platform to connect with one another, while simultaneously having the ability to play a sport they enjoy and represent Jesus Christ in the community,” says Jones.

Cole Winn ’18 Drafted to Texas Rangers On June 3, Cole Winn ’18 crossed the stage at graduation. Less than 24 hours later, he was picked 15th by the Texas Rangers in the first round of the MLB draft.

The right-handed starting pitcher, who transferred to Orange Lutheran after moving from Colorado in 2017, had 120 strikeouts and only 11 walks in the 17-18 season, with an earned run average of .20 according to OC Varsity.

“He has shown the ability to do things that I’ve never seen a kid do,” says varsity baseball head coach Eric Borba.

Cole helped Orange Lutheran defend their title as national champions at the 2018 National High School Invitational tournament, which was held in Cary, NC in March.

“That was probably the most fun week of baseball that I’ve had,” Cole says. “All the guys [came] together as a family and [had] fun.”

According to Coach Borba, Cole brings both talent and integrity to his new team.

“He’s a high-character kid who will treat people the right way. He’ll be the first person O range Lutheran High School to the field, and the last one to leave.”

Lancers in the White House In May, the White House announced that Jake Olson ’16 (pictured at the White House with his family and guide dog, Quebec) has been appointed to the Presidential Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Olson, who is blind, is a junior at USC and plays as a long snapper on the Trojans’ football team. He is also the coauthor of Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life.

Additionally, Caroline Sunshine ’13 is serving as a press assistant at the White House. Prior to her current position, Sunshine interned for the Office of the House Majority Leader, the College Republican National Committee, and the California Republican Party. She attended Claremont McKenna College where she studied international relations and economics.

Hannes Daube ’18 competed on the USA Men’s National Water Polo Team at the 2018 FINA World League Super Final in Budapest and the 2018 FINA Intercontinental Tournament in Auckland, New Zealand. During the Super Final, Daube lead Team USA to victory in an 11-4 match against Kazakstan and was named game MVP. He is a freshman at USC and is on the Trojans’ water polo team.

Amy (Nadeau) Berokoff ’05 (above, center) choreographed Quad Squad, an elite group of junior dancers that were featured on NBC’s hit dance competition World of Dance that aired in July. She also choreographed and mentored the Grand Prize winner of the fifteenth season of FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance. Berokoff is an instructor at the Orange County Performing Arts Academy and has been teaching contemporary dance throughout California for more than a decade.

In March, Tony Harnack II ’85 was awarded the inaugural Lancer Alumni Achievement Award by the Orange Lutheran Alumni Association. The Lancer Alumni Achievement Award is presented to an alumnus who has made a difference in the world through their professional and personal activities. Harnack is the owner and president of Wellington Foods, a nutritional supplement manufacturing company, and demonstrates his Christian faith through respectful and compassionate leadership, according to Victoria (Harnack) Hatz ’83, who nominated him.

Chelsea Bowers ’11 is the Director of Public Affairs at City Net, a nonprofit organization that works to alleviate homelessness through community partnership. Bowers recently earned a masters degree in Social Work at USC and holds a bachelors degree in Communication Studies from Vanguard University.

In March, Bowers spoke to students during Daily Gathering about her work with City Net and the organization’s involvement with the County of Orange and other Southern California agencies.

On a warm Saturday in August, four musical acts joined forces in the Ellwein Center for OLuPalooza, which celebrated alumni in the music industry.

When asked how his time at Orange Lutheran influenced the person he is today, Nate replied, “Being in an environment that encouraged Christian morals and teachings instilled a firm understanding and foundation of who God is and how powerful He is. I am forever grateful to have a personal relationship with him today.”

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT As an exemplary Christian high school, our vision is to develop healthy, strong, caring people who understand that their identity is in Christ alone.

Our students are strengthened and prepared for a Christian life of purpose, service through vocation and leadership in a global society by redefining the high school experience.

I am amazed to see how God is working through the lives of our students, families, faculty, and staff in bringing glory and honor to His name. We need only to walk through these hallowed halls to see His abundant blessing upon this school. God continues to provide for our needs at Orange Lutheran in extraordinary ways.

Philippians 4:19 We have seen amazing areas of growth this past year. Not only in funding, but in the number of people who are willing to serve as volunteers at Orange Lutheran. These servants help facilitate the many programs and events such as The Premiere, Golf Classic, Lancer Ladies Brunch, and many more. This past year, the inaugural Taste of OLu event was a smashing success -- a sold-out evening with 550 people in attendance, bringing our Lancer community together. This growth would not be possible without your encouragement and support.

Our need here at Orange Lutheran goes beyond tuition. That is why I invite you to support our Annual Fund. The purpose of the Annual Fund is to supplement tuition and provide the necessary funding for programs that will further help students discover their passions and realize their dreams.

Endowments Endowment funds provide the financial means to propel the mission and vision of Orange Lutheran ensuring that the OLu Experience is accessible to as many students as possible. This type of support allows you to leave a legacy and pass on the values and ideals that are most important to you for generations to come.
