Once the biggest and most prosperous enclosed shopping center in Orange County, Westminster Mall has declined to the point where its drooping sales tax revenue is weighing on the city treasury and a stroll through its halls is a journey down corridors of empty, dark, silent store fronts. Six years ago, city offi cials began the process of trying to turn the fortunes of the 100-acre center at Bolsa Avenue and Gold enwest Street around. Six years and nearly that many city managers – not to mention a worldwide coronavirus epidemic –later, wraps are finally coming off the distilled concept for the center in the form of the Westmin ster Mall Specific Plan. The plan is not likely to be turned into reality in every detail, but it repre sents a step forward to ward turning that freewayclose development into a potentially lucrative asset. There are challenges. As the report states, “the proj ect site provides a unique opportunity to reposition the mall into the thriving activity it once was and to accommodate the future growth of the city.” But – as was also pointed out – “the site is owned by Commander Kevin MacCormick of the Westminster Police Department gets advice from a citizen on Tuesday after noon at the “Cops and Robbins” event at the Baskin Rob bins ice cream store in Westminster Center at Goldenwest Street and Westminster Boulevard. A dip in new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in Orange County is de veloping in line with na tional and state statistics. According to Tuesday’s report from the county health care agency, the four-day total of new cas es was 2,615, which aver ages to 663.5 cases daily. That compares to Friday’s average of 769 and last Tuesday’s 746. However, the Aug. 5 figure was 955. Deaths have declined from 15 to 12 and the number of patients being treated for COVID-19 in intensive care unit stayed steady at 44. Hospitaliza tions increased from 291 toTo314.date, Orange County has had 651,486 con firmed cases, of which 622,358 are considered re covered. The death count is at Nationally,7,274. The New York Times – over a 14-day period – new cases have declined by 18 percent, but deaths have risen 10 percent. In California, Los Angeles Times reports a 40 percent drop in new cases but a 10 percent in crease in deaths due to coronavirus. Santa Ana police are in vestigating the fatal shoot ing Monday afternoon of a 20-year-old man. According to the SAPD, officers were send to the 1700 block of N. Spur geon Street at 3:19 p.m. in response to reports of a shooting.Uponarrival, they found “an unresponsive” adult male suffering an appar ent gunshot wound to his upperOrangetorso.County Fire Au thority personnel arrived GG police

“Bullet Train” rolls at the box office The Orange County Tribune’s electronic paper is now published on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

4 WEDNESDAY, AUG. 17, 2022/ORANGE COUNTY TRIBUNE

By Jake Coyle AP Film Writer NEW YORK (AP) – The Brad Pitt action film “Bullet Train” led all movies in ticket sales for a second straight weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, while a quiet spell in theaters and incredible staying power allowed “Top Gun: Mav erick” to rocket back into third place in its 12th week of release. After launching the previous weekend with about $30 million at the box office, “Bullet Train” pulled in $13.4 million in its sec ond go-around. David Leitch’s assassin-crowded film, made for $90 million, has grossed $54.4 million in two weeks for Sony Pictures. Globally, “Bullet Train” has grossed $114.5 mil lion. Three new films went into wide release but none cracked the top five films. The slowdown – an expected but still acute latesummer downturn in big releas es – gave plenty of airspace for the year’s biggest movie, “Mav erick,” to make another fly-by in theaters.Nearly three months after opening in May, Paramount Pictures put the “Top Gun” se quel back on a number of largeformat screens and increased its theater count from 2,760 to 3,181. It came away with $7.2 million, bringing its cumulative total to $673.8 million. Para mount’s biggest smash ever, ``Maverick’’ sits at seventh alltime in domestic box office, not accounting for inflation, right above “Titanic” and just below “Avengers: Infinity War.`` The uncommonly long run for “Top Gun: Maverick” is even rarer at a time when studios have shrunk theatrical windows, typi cally sending movies to stream ing services after about 45 days in“Toptheaters.Gun: Maverick” was very narrowly edged for second place by Warner Bros.’ “DC League of Super-Pets.” Warner Bros. es timated Sunday that its animat ed movie took in $7.17 million in its third week of release, just a nose above the $7.15 million for “Maverick.”Butwhile“Top Gun: Maverick” has been a boon to theaters recov ering from the pandemic, the thinly scheduled dog days of August – and potentially a chunk of September –will pose a test to the industry.

EVEN MORE THAN ‘THE SIMPSONS” ... “South Park” pushed the boundaries of acceptable TV humor (Comedy Central) “Some people are like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe they made fun of that because that’s such an important thing.’ And that’s exactly why we made fun of it,’’ says Trey Parker, who created the show with Matt Stone.

Arts&Living years of “South Park” comedy cardboard to praiseinternationalandscorn

Since the Peabody Awardwinning show’s first episode in 1997, Parker and Stone have blurred the boundary between good taste and bad, even more so than that other, long-living adult cartoon “The Simpsons.’’ “South Park’’ had a cartoon Jesse Jackson insist on having his rear end kissed by Kyle’s dad to apologize for his use of a racial slur. “As much as I love ‘The Simpsons’ and I think `The Simpsons’ is really important, I think `South Park’ has definitely done things that `The Simp sons’ haven’t,’’ says Dr. Jona

By Mark Kennedy AP Entertainment Writer NEW YORK (AP) – Reaching the age of 25 is usually a sign of hitting adulthood, a signal to put away all childish things. Not for “South Park’’ and stars Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman. The Comedy Central staple about four bratty, perpetually bundled-up youngsters in an un hinged Colorado cartoon town celebrated its silver anniversary by trundling along, fueled by poo jokes and razor-sharp social satire.Just some of its targets over the years include religions like Christianity, Islam and Scientol ogy as well as climate change deniers, cryptocurrencies, Phil Collins, Tiger Woods, smoking bans, ``Game of Thrones’’ and pedophiles. To celebrate the series’ 25th birthday, Parker and Stone have returned to Colorado with a con cert filmed at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre near Denver, headlined by Primus and al ternative rockers Ween. Rush members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson also stopped by to play. When terrorists attacked Imaginationland, our pint-sized heroes had to set things right be fore the U.S. military nuked the place.Typically, each episode of the show culminates in a cut-thecrap, commonsense sort of moral – some version of “do the right thing” or let people make their own decisions. Gray says Parker and Stone fit poorly in either the Democratic or Republican camps and places the pair on the political spectrum as ``left-skewing libertarians.’’ One common target is pon tificating celebrities, like when Bono of U2 was revealed to be the world’s largest t—d. But Parker and Stone only like to skewer powerful celebs, show ing a surprisingly tender side to Brittney Spears, who in an episode has blown off her own head, but the music industry keeps making her perform. “They hate celebrities when ce lebrities try to tell us how to run our lives,’’ Gray says. “Some of their criticisms are ones that unite the left and the right. Like we all find celebrity culture vac uous.” “South Park’’ is the series that gave us cultural touchstones like Cheesy Poofs, ManBearPig and Mr. Hankey, the Christmas poo. It gave us Professor Chaos and General Disarray and the sight of Cartman exacting revenge on a teenage bully by making him eat his own parents and then gleefully licking the tears from his face. It has morphed into full-length movies like “South Park: Big ger, Longer & Uncut’’ – which snagged an Oscar nomination

A native of Ohio whose fam ily moved around the country, Heche endured an abusive and tragic childhood, one that helped push her into acting as a way of escaping her own life. She showed enough early promise to be offered profes sional work in high school and first came to prominence on the NBC soap opera “Another World” from 1987 to 1991, win ning a Daytime Emmy Award for the role of twins Marley and Vicky Hudson, who on the show sustained injuries that antici pated Heche’s: Vicky falls into a coma for months after a car crash.Bythe late 1990s Heche was one of the hottest actors in Hol lywood, a constant on magazine covers and in big-budget films. In 1997 alone, she played op posite Johnny Depp as his wife in “Donnie Brasco” and Tommy Lee Jones in “Volcano’’ and was part of the ensemble cast in the original “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

Parker and Stone first bonded as fans of Terry Gilliam and the Monty Python comedy troupe. They hand cut and glued their first ``South Park’’ cartoons from construction paper and found a freedom in the low-key method.“Ifyou had pitched the show and said ‘Oh, and there’s this little 8-year-old boy and he dies violently and isn’t that great?’ Well, that would never fly. Even in good animation that’s not funny. But in construction-paper animation, it’s funny,” Parker says. From paper to computers, the show keeps going. It has been a GIF and meme generator long before there were GIFs and memes: “I’m not fat, I’m big boned!” “Oh, hamburgers!’’ and “Respect my authoritah!” Celebrating its 25th anniver sary with a concert makes sense since music has been at the show’s heart. Some 100 songs have been used over the years, and “South Park: Bigger, Lon ger & Uncut” was itself a musi cal film. Parker and Stone think of themselves less as animators and more as members of a band. “When we go into a new season, we go to the studio like a band, and we have no idea what’s go ing to come out,’’ says Parker. “We’re always surprised at the end of the season of like, ‘Oh, we did that? That’s crazy!’ That’s what kept it fun and fresh for 25 years.”

Bobby Wagner left Seahawks for the Rams

BOBBY WAGNER A top Inside linebacker n HOUSTON TEXANS at L.A. RAMS, Friday at 7 p.m.

The Rams didn’t sign Wag ner specifically to teach Ernest Jones how to be a great inside linebacker, yet Jones sometimes feels as if he hit the football lot tery. He’ll spend his second NFL season lining up next to one of his idols – and then picking his brain“It’safterward.crazy that he’s play ing with us now and that I’m learning from him, because he was like the guy that I always watched,” Jones said. Wagner will have the green dot on his helmet as the Rams’ defensive signal-caller, and he has already assumed a natural leadership role beyond bark ing out signals: He’s a sounding board for his teammates and an example to watch every day in practice. Jones frequently finds himself admiring Wagner’s nose for the ball and knack for positioning.

ORANGE COUNTY TRIBUNE/WEDNESDAY, AUG. 17, 2022 7

By Greg Beacham AP Sports Writer IRVINE (AP) – Bobby Wag ner is still getting used to the fact he’s now working with Sean McVay, not against him. After five years of trying to shut down McVay’s offense two or three times per season for the Seattle Seahawks, Wag ner is now making the Los An geles Rams better. Instead of attempting to get into McVay’s head to anticipate his moves, the veteran lineback er and the offense-minded coach are putting their heads together. “Now we get to feed off one another,” Wagner said. “His en ergy has been crazy. We’ve been in constant communication, even in the offseason. Reaching out, just checking in and stuff like that. It’s been cool. These last couple of months, being able to be coached by him has been a blessing for sure.’’

“That’s like every day, even when I’m watching film and he makes the plays that the normal linebacker wouldn’t make.”

The Rams signed the 32-yearold Wagner to be the gamechanging inside linebacker they’ve decidedly lacked in recent years. But the defend ing Super Bowl champions also signed the six-time All-Pro for the impact he’ll have across the organization, and the signs are already showing. Practically every player in a horned helmet speaks rhapsodi cally about Wagner’s impact on their work habits and football intelligence, but they also can’t wait to see the impact he’ll have on “YouSundays.goback and watch the plays (at practice), and you’ve just got a smile on your face,” Aaron Donald said. “I might jump on my gap, and then he’s there to fill it so fast, because he’s just downhill. He under stands where things are going, and he’s able to play so much faster. Just seeing the way he moves, the way he plays, defi nitely gets us excited.”

The Panthers have Kobe Boykin, a top running back, and wide receivers Aaron White and Jonathan Smith. They were 7-4 last season and won the Orange Coast League title.
