After Two Years, GG’s Strawberry Festival is Back

“Essential Workers” is the theme After a two-year coronavirus hiatus, the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival is back with celebrities, music, rides, food, a parade and more.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Essential Workers.” The celebrity parade grand marshal is Kathy Garver of TV’s “Family Affair,” and the theme grand marshal is Tom DaRe, Garden Grove’s chief of police and a Garden Grove native.

The festival is held in and around Village Green park in the downtown area of the city at Main and Euclid streets from Friday through Monday this Memorial Day weekend.

Daily corona cases again on a decline in the OC The daily average of new coronavirus cases in Orange County declined sharply in Tuesday’s report on the local status of the pandemic.

According to the county health care agency, over the four-day reporting period of May 20-23,

2,440 new cases were tallied, which is an average of 610 per day.

That’s down from Friday’s average of 938 cases, but still higher than a week ago when the figure was 519 per day.

Latest OC coronavirus report showing a decline in new cases Continued from page 1

deaths (compared to five), hospitalizations at 131 (113) and the use of intensive cares units for COVID-19 patients at 20 (13).

To date, Orange County has had 566,402 cases of coronavirus. of which 545,422 are considered recovered. The death toll is at 7,030.

Nationally, The New York Times is reporting that – over

a 14-day period – confirmed new cases are up 46 percent and deaths are down 15 percent.

Hospitalizations have risen by 28 percent.

In California, Los Angeles Times reports that new cases are up 78 percent and deaths are down by 1 percent, over a similar stretch.

The time machine on the Village Green It’s amazing the things one can take for granted.

As Joni Mitchell sang (and wrote), “You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.”

Gone for two years was the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival, knocked down by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. What’s been an annual “landmark” in the year since Dwight Eisenhower was president left a big hole in the rhythm of the local calendar when it Jim Tortolano disappeared.

Frankly, for those of us who grew up in Garden Grove (or nearby), the festival was taken for granted. It was as perennial as the grass and was organized and realized with such regularity and precision that its comings and goings almost seemed to be as inevitable as the changing of the seasons.

The 2022 Strawberry Festival will be back this coming Memorial Day weekend (Friday through Monday). Will the crowds come back as usual after two years gone? We won’t know for sure until the event happens, but I know what will return.

Memories.

In a sense, those carnival rides – in retrospect – turn into time machines. My first date with Marilyn Lewis (now my wife) took place at the 1969 festival, back when it was held at Garden Grove Park. We shyly held hands and I tried to win a prize at a game booth, not quite realizing what a prize I already had at my side.

We went our separate ways (for 20 years) and the festival moved, too, relocating to the Village Green park in the downtown area. And so did I, living right across the street, first in an apartment complex and later at a condo.

The music, the chatter, and smells of the festival were part of my routine for a generation of my life. I took dates there, worked in booths, cruised the area for journalistic photo opportunities, ate too much of really tasty but too-fattening food.

I wasn’t always thrilled with having the carnival so close, especially when the carnies cranked up loud

Once again, the Westminster City Council will wrestle with issues surrounding the controversial proposed Quang Tri Monument tonight.

Under consideration is the recommendation by the Quang Tri Monument Committee for the depiction and design of the proposed monument and “provide direction or approval.”

Also, the council will be asked to consider the Community Service and Recreation Commission’s recommendation for the location of the proposed monument and “provide direction or approval.”

The monument would depict the success of the Army of the Republic of (South) Vietnam – along with assistance from American forces – in recapturing in 1972 of a key citadel. The action was considered key to repelling an offensive

Controversy has surrounded the proposed monument, including the issue of location of the monument and the appropriateness of memorializing combat in a war lost by South Vietnamese forces in 1975.

The council will meet in person and via teleconference at 8200 Westminster Blvd.

A closed session is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the open session set to begin at 7 p.m.

City flags ordered at half-staff

Tuesday’s brief meeting of the Garden Grove City Council closed in sympathy of people – now believed to be at least 21 – killed in a mass shooting at an elementary school in a small town in Texas.

Mayor Steve Jones said that all flags at city buildings would be flown at half-staff until sunset on Saturday, May 28.

A short agenda greeted the council, which was

short on two members, Phat Bui (District 4) and Stephanie Klopfenstein (District 5).

The council approved: • a proclamation declaring June as LGBTQ Pride Month • introduction and first reading of an ordinance adopting the GGPD Military Equipment Use Policy • second reading and adoption of an ordinance amending the municipal

code establishing “automotive fleet storage” as a permitted use in the neighborhood mixed use zone • second reading of an ordinance prohibiting the unlawful possession of catalytic converters in the city, and repairs and sales of bicycles and bicycle parts on public property.

The next meeting of the council is set for Tuesday, June 14.

“Each law enforcement officer who dies in the line of duty has a big impact on the community,” said Chief Tom DaRe. Speaking of the impact of COVID-19 on the GGPD, he said the effect was especially felt in the watch commander’s office.

“The majority of the command staff had tested positive for COVID all with varying degrees of symptoms. Lt. Reynolds, while not having tested positive at this point, worked tirelessly to make sure we could adequately police our community, and was an integral part of our emergency operations team.”

A large crowd was on hand in front of police headquarters on Acacia Parkway for the solemn ceremonies and speeches. Serving as master of ceremonies was Deputy Chief Amir El-Farra. The Bolsa Grande Concert Choir sang, “America the Beautiful” and

“We Remember Them.”

As is traditional, the families of the fallen placed a rose on the memorial wreath. There was a 21-gun salute and a flyover by a helicopter.

The featured speaker was former Garden Grove Police Chief John Robertson.

“Police officers are the glue that holds society together,” he said. “All you have to do is think

about what’s happened in the last couple of years when [there were calls] to defund the police and police were ordered to stand down and what happened in those cities. It was anarchy; it was chaos. The police are the glue.”

Opening and closing the event was the GGPD Honor Guard and the Nicholson Pipes and Drums.

But store employees counterattacked, using fists, feet – and in one case, a barstool – to drive the thieves away.

Sunday’s incident was the latest in a series of smash-and-grab attacks at jewelry stores in shopping malls. A similar attack took place recently at a Kay’s Jewelers in Brea Mall.

The suspects may have left with bruises and bumps, but they also were able to grab $7,700 worth of jewelry, according to Jennifer Carey, public affairs manager for the City of Huntington Beach.

But that was a minor annoyance. The return of the festival was not only the harbinger of summer, it was an opportunity to rekindle memories, to travel back in time and recall the experience that – in so many ways – defined the progress of my life from callow youth to … uh … let’s say local observer emeritus.

I’ll be there this weekend, taking photos of the Saturday parade and more. No doubt I’ll run into old friends, local dignitaries and new reasons to go off my diet.

And I know as soon as I step onto those grounds, hear the calliope music and inhale the aroma of a dozen kinds of treats, I’ll be taken back into the history, and very glad the festival is back, too.

Ellen is looking to new horizons Ground-breaking actress, host, producer sees some opportunities

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Ellen DeGeneres relishes what her daytime show has given viewers in its nearly two-decade run, a blend of the silly, sometimes earnest and, particularly in the last few years, a respite from hard times.

She’s also acknowledges that who she is counts for a lot – a TV host with wide appeal who is lesbian and married – but would like to see the distinction rendered moot.

“It shouldn’t be any different than someone who has a talk show who’s a heterosexual person. But it does mean something, and I am proud of that.

I’m really thankful,’’ DeGeneres said.

She decided it was time to end “The Ellen DeGeneres Show’’ after 19 years and, before she dances off the daytime stage, is celebrating with high-profile guests. Among them: Jennifer Lawrence, Mila Kunis and Bruno Mars, with Jennifer Aniston, Billie Eilish and Pink on the Thursday, May 26, finale.

With taping recently concluded, DeGeneres could heed the advice offered by another famous ex-talk show host and her friend, Oprah Winfrey, who’s on the episode airing Tuesday.

Winfrey suggested to DeGeneres that she take time off.

Anaheim mayor quits post over contested stadium deal Continued from page 8

tions were lawful and that Sidhu didn’t ask for campaign contributions linked to the deal.

“Mayor Harry Sidhu has always, as his foremost priority, acted in the best interests of the City of Anaheim, and he does so today,’’ Meyer said in a statement.

The resignation comes a week after the city of 347,000 people said it learned Sidhu was being investigated by federal officials in relation to the stadium deal.

Since then, Sidhu’s colleagues on the city council have called for him to resign and raised questions about whether the stadium sale can move forward.

The city was expected to discuss the splan at a meeting Tuesday.

No one ever wants to see their mayor resign in difficult circumstances like this but we do welcome this resignation,’’ city spokesman Mike Lyster said.

Anaheim has been negotiating the sale of the land around the stadium to the Los Angeles Angels.

The team would agree to stay in the city through 2050 and buy the stadium and its surrounding parking lots, where it would build homes, shops and restaurants.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Sidhu is being investigated by federal officials for allegedly giving confidential information to the Angles at least twice during negotiations in the hope of getting a campaign donation.

The scandal has ballooned in Anaheim since last week when a former chamber of commerce executive was charged by federal officials of lying to a mortgage lender as part of a broader investigation.

Also at issue is whether the agreement was in violation of state affordable housing law by not first offering the land for such housing in Anaheim.

This whole mess raises a lot of other questions, including the – remote – possibility of relocating the team, which is obligated to Anaheim through 2028. According to the Los Angeles Times, owner Arte Moreno has looked at Tustin and Long Beach.

Does this augur the possibility

“As a coach, you’re always so solution-oriented that sometimes you feel helpless (in more complex situations),’’ McVay said. “These are the small things that you can do that contribute to hopefully ending this sooner than later.’’

There’s an FBI investigation into to the conduct of Mayor Harry Sidhu – who resigned Tuesday – and the Angels have given the city a deadline of June 14. The next two council meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, May 24 and Tuesday, June 7.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.

(AP) – Matthew Stafford had an offseason injection in his elbow to quell an unspecified minor injury that nagged him throughout the Los Angeles Rams’ run to the Super Bowl.

He didn’t throw serious passes during organized team activities Monday, and he might not do so again until training camp.

Stafford still believes he can get plenty of work done during the Rams’ early preparations for their chase of a second ring.

“The biggest thing for me at this point is to continue to master – as much as I can – this offense, and continue to teach it the way Coach teaches it,’’ Stafford said. “That’s my job, to be a coach on the field.’’

Most observers thought Stafford already had a pretty solid

grasp of Sean McVay’s offense while passing for 4,886 yards last season before leading Los Angeles to four consecutive playoff victories in an impressive first year on the West Coast.

But Stafford thinks he can improve, and he also realizes he needs time to form a bond with new receiver Allen Robinson.

With the regular-season opener against Buffalo still 3 1/2 months away, Stafford has plenty of time to heal his elbow and to hone his game.
