Fireworks blamed in GG blaze

Fireworks are being blamed for a blaze that damaged a house, several trees and a fence in Garden Grove last week. According to the Garden Grove Fire Department, the blaze was reported at 3:21 p.m. in the 12000 block of Hester Place on Wednesday, July 3. Hester is located southwest of the shopping district at Brookhurst Street and Chapman Avenue. Firefighters arriving on the scene saw five to six cypress trees fully involved. The fire from the trees were close enough to a nearby house to do some damage to the structure’s roof, eaves and a fence. With a rapid attack firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading into the house. There were no injuries reported. Roof fires around Independence Day are often caused by illegal airborne fireworks. Possession or use of such fireworks are punishable by a $1000 fine. Four Garden Grove units responded to the blaze, along with one from Anaheim and one from the Orange County Fire Authority.

Garden Grove residents and commuters should expect delays travelling Valley View Street, as the city council approved a construction bid Tuesday night that kick-starts the street’s entire surface overhaul process. The city plans to reconstruct the entire street from the Garden Grove (22) Freeway to the northern city border. The city will also reconstruct the median curbs, bus pads and update the landscaping. According to the staff report, the project will improve the ride, safety and appearance of the street. The project will begin in August and is long overdue said Bill Murray, the city’s public works director during the meeting. “I’m very hopeful that the base work on this (project) will be good for 20 years,” Murray said. Murray said delays, due to the current work on connectors linking the Garden

Grove and San Diego (405) freeways, held off resurfacing construction for the street, causing escalated damage. “As a result, Valley View continued to deteriorate and the damage is such that we really need to redo the entire street,” Murray said. The project will cost roughly $4.7 million and will be funded by Measure M funds, gas taxes and federal highway and safety improvement funds, Murray said. Councilman Kris Beard asked Murray about what impact the project would have on traffic flow after Murray gave his report on the matter. Beard said Valley View Street has a high volume of traffic during peak times. “Is this overdue?” Beard asked. “How long will this last?” Murray did not downplay the massive project’s effect on traffic during his report however. Murray said that the project will take as long as six months to complete and does not account for rain delays or Continued on page 2

New roof, walls OKd for city hall building By Jim Tortolano Garden Grove Journal

City Hall will get a facelift as a result of action by the Stanton City Council Tuesday night. In separate votes, the council voted 4-0 (with Mayor Dave Shawver absent) to fix the roof, and also install a new movable wall system inside the building. “We’re going to remove and replace the existing roof,” said Nick Guilliams, director of public works and city engineer. “It’s badly damaged and beyond repair.” A construction contract was awarded to Letner Roofing Co. in the amount of $240,000, with a 10 percent contingency. “The money will come from the capital improvement fund,” said Guilliams. “There will be no impact on the general fund.” The job should take about three weeks

to complete and much of the work will be done Friday through Sunday, when city hall is closed. The council also awarded a $146,669 contract to USS Cal Builders, Inc. to replace the existing movable wall system. It, too, is badly damaged and beyond repair, according to Guilliams. The replacement system will be operated electronically and will have additional insulation to reduce noise. “I’m really pleased to see that a Stantonbased company was the best bidder on this project,” commented Councilwoman Carol Warren. Also Tuesday night, the council heard a report from a representative of Golden State Water Co. on the possible impact of annexations of water districts in Orange County. Golden State provides water to Stanton and several other northwest county cities.
