Computers to get a facelift at City Hall Also, kudos for ‘dispensing’ drill By Jonathan Smith Garden Grove Journal
Westminster’s city officials and employees will be seeing an updated virtual software system as the city council unanimously to approve two measures during Wednesday’s meeting. The first measure approved the contract with consulting firm Nexus Is to implement a “virtual desktop infrastructure” (VDI) for network devices and hardware, as well as up to 180 desktops. The second measure approved the unlimited licensing agreement to use VMWare software program. The new system will cost about $415,000 for three years. After the three years, it will cost about $57,000 annually for software updates and maintenance. Derek Marsh, deputy chief for the Westminster Police Department, said licensing the software program system as a “buy-as-you-go” basis was not cost effective. Marsh said the approval of the licensing agreement will allow the city to save upwards to $140,000 a year for maintenance and about more than $500,000 on the initial cost of the system. Marsh also said the
other component of hardware and server infrastructure will help save about $500 for each unit. He added that computer repairs will also be done more efficiently. With both systems in place, it will allow city officials to better maintain systems and fix problems quicker and more efficiently. “We are at a point right now in our city where every computer we have…. are basically three plus years old with some upwards of six years old,” Marsh said. “They have old Windows software. They have old Windows Microsoft software and other software that is not up to date. “Virtually these desktops will allow us to deploy these services much more quickly and efficiently and troubleshoot much more quickly and efficiently,” he added. The city council also heard a special presentation about the success of a “point of dispensing” practice the city offered in October 2012. The exercise was conducted to demonstrate how to effectively disperse medication to a large population in case of an emergency. During the demonstraContinued on page 2

MODERNIZATION is making a mess at many campuses as buildings are repaired and upgraded. Above, a scene at the closed Bell Intermediate School campus in Garden Grove. Students from Bell are now housed at the former Chapman Education Center, once a junior high campus.
Modernization update on GGUSD agenda Tuesday A presentation on the massive modernization program now underway tops the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting of the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education. The board meets in closed session at 6 p.m., with the regular open session set to start at 7 p.m. Meetings are held in the fifth floor board room at the Education Center, 10331 Stanford Ave. Nick Bakano, assistant superintendent of business services, and Sal Sanchez, director of maintenance, operations and transportation, will make the presentation, along with other staff members. Voters in 2010 approved Measure A, which called for approximately $250 million in bonds to modernize and repair facilities throughout the GGUSD, which includes most of Garden Grove as well as parts of Anaheim, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Stanton and Westminster. Because of the district’s
success in getting grants and matching funds, the improvements are expected to be closer to $500 million. The work has been divided into phases, with the first phase expected to be finished this summer. The extensive repairs and upgrades have required that some school student bodies be shifted temporarily to other locations.
For example, pupils at Bell Intermediate School in West Garden Grove are now residing at the Chapman Education Center, which was once a junior high campus. Also on the agenda are items about increasing summer athletic fees and new member appointments to the citizen’s bond oversight committee, which monitors the spending of Measure A funds.
Anaheim man dies at Coca Cola bottling plant ANAHEIM (AP) – A worker at a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Orange County has died after becoming trapped in a packaging machine. According to reports, 58-year-old Albert Gonzalez of Mission Viejo was trapped Thursday afternoon at the Anaheim facility. Jeff Lutz of the Anaheim Fire Department says firefighters removed him from a machine that wraps cases of bottled water in plastic for distribution. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Federal and local authorities are investigating.
A man accused of sexually assaulting a preteen girl in a Garden Grove motel in 1995 and continuing a relationship with her for over a year is facing felony charges at a pre-trial hearing set for Friday. According to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, Vanna Hong was 28 years old when he met the victim – identified only as “Jane Doe” – while he was visiting Orange County from Rhode Island. Authorities allege he drove or flew to California several times between March 1995 and February 1996 and took her to a motel in Garden Grove and had unlawful sexual intercourse with her. From March 1995 to February 1996 he is accused of taking her to the Alamo Hotel in Anaheim where he engaged in several sexual acts with the girl. Further, it’s alleged that he forcibly raped the girl between March and September 1996. In January of 2011, the suspect is said to have contacted her through Facebook and arranged to meet her, even though she was now married to a law enforcement officer. The victim contacted authorities about the sexual assaults against her as a child. Hong was arrested on June 1, 2012 when he arrived at the Los Angeles International Airport to meet the victim. The hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. in the North Justice Center in Fullerton. The hearing was originally set for August 2012.
