Superintendent Barbara Jenkins was named chair of the board of directors of the Council of the Great City Schools in July. The council is a coalition of 75 of the nation's largest urban public school systems dedicated to improving the education of children in the inner cities. It will hold its annual fall conference in Orlando in October 2022.

AN 'AMAZING' TEAM BUILDER Who says Pre-planning can’t be fun? Just ask the staff at Ocoee High who participated in "Amazing Race"-style team building exercises Aug. 6 thanks to an idea by Principal Lisa Karcinski.

School instructional coaches went to work to devise and place clues around the campus for teams to find and tasks to perform. Racing around in groups of six, 10 teams – including 32 new teachers to the school – performed tasks such as hula hooping and emptying boxes of cotton balls from their backs.

In addition to learning how their colleagues solved problems, worked together and bonded, the top two teams received gift cards for their efforts.

"You had to think outside the box to make the task happen," said Instructional Coach Victoria McDonald. "It was interesting to see how the teachers worked together."

District 4 adds two high schools For the first time since 2009, OCPS has opened two new high schools at one time, increasing the number of traditional high schools in the district to 22. Horizon and Lake Buena Vista high schools add about 5,500 seats to our capacity.

It was a labor of love for both school principals, who each spent a year preparing for the opening, including shepherding the naming and branding processes for the schools, hiring staff and partnering with Facilities and the Construction teams to get each campus ready to welcome students and families.

"It’s been the most wonderful, fulfilling and exhausting experience of my career," said Laura Beusse, Horizon High principal and a 39-year educator (pictured above). "To see the school come to life with teachers and students makes it all worth it."

Lake Buena Vista High Principal Guy Swenson (inset) said the first day of school was a "great day. A year of planning has come to life."

"More students than I can count have sought me out to tell me how nice their teachers are and how they feel so respected by the adults and their peers," said Swenson, a 25-year educator who previously led Olympia High. "My dream has been to create a school where everyone feels welcomed and seen. To hear students say that so soon has warmed my heart to no end."

Both schools opened with just freshmen, sophomores and juniors and have room to grow. Seniors remained at their original zoned high schools. They also are located in the southwest part of the county, needed to relieve overcrowding and growth. Horizon relieves Windermere High, and Lake Buena Vista relieves Dr. Phillips and Freedom high schools.

The district’s newest elementary, Village Park, welcomed its new school family to campus with balloons, dragon mascot Nona, a selfie booth and school tours the week before school began.

The school relieves Eagle Creek and Laureate Park elementary schools, and features the latest classroom technology and a bright, open layout with extensive natural lighting and energysaving features.

Buena Vista High also offers the Alpha Academy for academically advanced students and the Viper Social Justice Academy.

It costs about $115 million each to design and build each school. Their construction was made possible by Orange County taxpayers and by impact fees from developers. Because OCPS schools use the same models, both high schools are arranged around a courtyard and have a three-story classroom building; media center; culinary labs; auditorium; gym; athletics amenities; and a greenhouse. The schools also feature the latest technology and improvements in the high school prototype.

One twist for Horizon High students is that they share space with younger students from Water Spring Middle for two years. This arrangement allows this community to serve students while the new middle school campus is under construction. Lake Nona Middle similarly started out on the campus of Lake Nona High.

The only replacement school of 2021, Silver Pines Academy K-12 Learning Center brings the students from the former Gateway and Cherokee schools under one roof on a property shared with Magnolia School. With separate campuses for K-5 and 6-12 students connected by an administrative area, Silver Pines offers vocational training, behavioral specialists and other student supports in a small, nurturing environment.

A Day in the Life of ...

Information Technology Services Supporting the technology, communication and infrastructure systems of the district, Information Technology Services is one OCPS division that probably touches most district employees and students. Five area ITS teams provide second tier support for schools and remote sites, as well as being liaisons between ITS and site administration.

When not found at their East Learning Community office, you can try to catch up with the East Area ITS team composed of Senior Technology Support Representatives Brandie Ross, Vincent Boothe and Robert Stefanov, and Administrator Eric Close out in the field as they support 40 schools, two maintenance sites, three ancillary sites and the East Learning Community office.

"I love to help people, and being in technology and education …, I go home at the end of the day feeling like I have helped [someone]," said Ross, who graduated from the University of Phoenix and previously supported educational entities in Leon and Wakulla counties.

Ross joined OCPS in 2016, first working as a school tech support at Hunter’s Creek and West Creek elementary schools before moving to Freedom Middle, where she was named Support Person of the Year in 2019.

The mother of three transitioned to an area ITS team, working first with the Southwest Area in 2020 before joining the East Area later that year.

"On a district level, I get to help more students and staff at multiple schools instead of just one," said Ross, who built her first computer at age 19.

"Technology is a constant learning curve. Every day you learn something new; every day presents a new challenge."

The Orange Peal team recently spent the day with Ross.

1:55-2:40 p.m.: After an assessment of immediate needs, Ross works with Pagan, who is filling in for the school’s media specialist.

She resolves six issues and checks out a set of laptops for a class. Ross will need to come back to continue working on issues.

2:45 p.m.: Departs Deerwood Elementary for the East Learning Community office, 5 miles away.

9:27 a.m.: Arrives at Riverdale Elementary, 4 miles away.

2:58 p.m.: Back at her desk, Ross checks tech tickets that have come into the Easy Vista system while she was out in the field.

9:46-10:42 a.m.: Discusses a range of issues with Riverdale Elementary Tech Support Rep Howard Adlam in his office in the school’s Media Center. This includes missing iPad chargers; status on tickets for phone name changes and voicemail requests; Archibus tags; and recommendations on how to image teacher

3:21 p.m.: Close comes to talk to Ross about devices at Avalon Elementary not having access to the OCPS Intranet. To minimize impact on classroom instruction, Close asks her if she can visit Castle Creek Elementary first thing in the morning the next day to address the computer issues there.

Retiree: Doris Lochner Years with OCPS: 34 OCPS Retirement date: Sept. 30 For her entire OCPS career, Doris Lochner has worked for Transportation Services. She began in 1987 as a bus monitor for the hearing impaired at Lake Sybelia Elementary.

"As a monitor, I was the first person [who] my students saw every morning. I hope that my demeanor set the tone for them to have a fantastic day at school," she said.

Over three-plus decades, she says she enjoyed working with the Back-To-School Bash events and transporting the homeless for Thanksgiving dinners back in the 1990s.

Lochner has also served as a bus monitor for ESE students at Deerwood Elementary, and worked in the Transportation offices at the Hanging Moss and Lake Nona compounds and Educational Learning Center. Since 2013, Lochner has been an Employee Services section lead at the Hanging Moss Compound.

"I will remember all of my coworkers and the fun that we had over the years," she said.

New benefits plan year starts Oct. 1 OCPS Annual Enrollment was held July 28-Aug. 18, and medical plans and rates were based on the 2020-21 insurance plans. Changes to the costs or benefits of the medical plans during the plan year, as a result of negotiations and ratification, will permit employees to make a secondary election change to medical plans only. If a secondary election change is needed, employees will be notified via email.

2. Any changes made during this year’s annual enrollment should be reflected on your first salary statement in September. Please make sure that the information coincides with the choices you made. Remember, deductions and Flexible Spending Accounts begin in September; however, coverage for all other plans is effective Oct. 1.

OCPS is using Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds to offer a one-time $200 incentive to any full- or part-time employee who is fully vaccinated by Oct. 31.
