A Comparison Between Law & Golf

A

s an avid golfer, I shamelessly wanted to weave a “golf ” article into one of my president’s messages (a friendly suggestion from past president Tony Sos). But really who wants to hear stories about my golf playing partners ... like what did Three-Putt Tom shoot, what new swing thought is Warden Scott working on, and what swing oil seltzer drink did Canadian Dan bring today. I know for some golf Eric C. Reed, Esq. is boring, as evident when my daughters, Morgan and Reagan, politely ask me to take my golf watching to the “Gator” room. But it dawned on me that practicing law and playing golf are similar in many ways. The biggest of which is no matter how long you practice law or play golf, it is impossible (at least in my eyes) to master either. Watching many a post-round interview of the best players in the world, I have never heard a player say that he/she could not have played any better . . . heck, even the rare few who have shot the magical 59 in a tournament have said, “I still left a few shots out there.”

Each time we receive a new case or project, we deal with many factors, i.e., the facts, the law, the court, and opposing counsel.

Compare this to golf, where each round we factor in the course conditions, the weather, our playing opponent, our swing, and our equipment. Have you ever had a difficult opposing counsel or playing opponent? Doesn’t it make the case (or round) even more difficult or downright dreadful? On the flipside, when you have a respectable adversary (in law or golf ), doesn’t it make the process, win or lose, much better? When I took The Florida Bar Practicing with Professionalism course as a young attorney, one of the speakers provided some good advice. At the start of each case, he would call opposing counsel to introduce himself and to briefly discuss the case. He stated this brief call helped set the tone of the case in a positive manner. I know in today’s world picking up the phone seems odd versus sending an email, but having that verbal interaction really does help.

Golf requires complete focus on every shot – if that is 70 shots or 100-plus shots later. Any miscue, even the approach shot on #18, can turn a personal best round into one you’d like to forget.

Law requires that same laser focus day in and day out – for each motion, memorandum, or brief we draft, each case we argue before the court, or presentation we make to the client. This focus requires us to follow through on the assignment at hand, i.e., following through and finishing our swing.

They call golf a “gentlemen’s sport,” based on integrity and personal honesty. There is no referee in golf to call penalties. That duty is placed on the golfer to follow the rules. Like the practice of law, we are bound by the Rules of Professional Responsibility requiring us to call our own “fouls” as officers of the court. In both disciplines it can be frustrating, but we must maintain our composure and be a good sport.

The dreaded double bogey (or worse) certainly destroys a good round of golf. All of the best golfers have bad holes but what sets them apart is the ability to put it out of their mind and move on to the next hole. As attorneys, part of our job at times is delivering bad news to the client, i.e., the “double bogey.” We’ve all read the disciplinary section of The Florida Bar News where attorneys fail to disclose the bad news to the client. I was taught that even though it really hurts to advise the client of an adverse ruling or mistake, we should immediately notify them, let the client respond in full and, if possible, formulate a game plan and move on, i.e., to the next hole.

No matter how long we practice law or play golf, we learn and have the opportunity to get better but that requires practice and more practice (i.e., the “practice of law”). As I wrap up this August edition, we are in the midst of the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.

I hope you enjoy watching all the sporting events, and of course, watching the best men and women golfers in the world representing their countries.

Florida Supreme Court Changes Clerk Redaction Rules in Civil Filings

n January 21, 2021, the Florida Supreme Court, on its own motion, amended Rule of Judicial Administration 2.420(d) (Public Access to and Protection of Judicial Branch Records; Procedures for Determining Confidentiality of Court Records), eliminating the requirement that the clerk of court independently designate as confidential information filed in small claims court filings, and circuit and county court civil cases, except for Jimmy Ryce civil commitments, cases stemming from sexual assault, and medical malpractice filings. This amendment became effective on July 1, 2021.

Under the amended rule, it is now the sole responsibility of the filer to identify and designate information as confidential listed in rule 2.420(d)(1).

In accordance with a recent amendment by the Florida Supreme Court, to Rule of Judicial Administration 2.420, “the clerk will not be required to identify and designate information as confidential,” in circuit civil, county civil and small claims court documents.

This means that attorneys filing certain civil cases will need to

notify the clerk to ensure their client’s protected information is identified and designated as confidential. To accomplish this, all filers including attorneys and self-represented litigants, should: • File a Notice of Confidential Information in circuit civil, county civil and small claims court cases when filing documents with information deemed confidential or exempt per rule 2.420(d)(1); • Identify the precise location(s) of confidential information within the document, including each page number on which it appears; and • Identify the type of confidential information or provision that applies to the identified information.

Additionally, if the filer believes in good faith that information is confidential but is not described in rule 2.420(d)(1), the filer can request that the information be maintained as confidential by filing a Motion to Determine Confidentiality of Court Records.

Pursuant to the Florida Supreme Court ruling, my office stopped redacting. However, filers will retain dual responsibility to identify confidential information in all other types of case filings, including family, criminal, juvenile and probate.

As always, please know that my office will continue to work with you to assist in making this transition as smooth as possible. As my office gets any further updates, I will be sure to pass it along.

The Honorable Lisa T. Munyon Chief Judge, Ninth Judicial Circuit Court Chief Judge Munyon began

judicial career. From 2008 to 2019, she oversaw court technology in the Ninth Circuit, continuing the circuit’s national leadership role in the innovative use of technology. Since 2012, she has chaired the Florida Courts Technology Commission (FCTC) that has broad duties to make recommendations on technology policy to the Supreme Court.

her judicial career in the Criminal Division. She was appointed Associate Administrative Judge of the division in 2006 and Administrative Judge in 2007. In 2009, she was assigned to the Domestic Relations Division and was appointed Administrative Judge in 2010. Following her assignment to family court, Chief Judge Munyon sat in the Civil Division and then Business Court where she served as Associate Administrative Judge in 2011 and Administrative Judge from 2012 to 2016.

In 2017, Chief Judge Munyon returned to the Criminal Division for two years, serving as Administrative Judge. She returned to the Civil Division in 2019 and served as Associate Administrative Judge for two years. Currently, she presides over the Probate Division.

hinking back to all the old “extra” steps; driving to the courthouse, finding parking, going through security, seeking out the correct courtroom, signing in, sitting through cattle calls, and even putting on pants – there is a substantial amount of time saved by appearing through virtual means.

But what sort of niceties are lost?

Are the technological steps forward followed by steps backward? While cases may move faster on paper, do Robert W. Borr, Esq. they resolve any sooner?

Most practitioners will tell you that they prefer to appear in person when it comes to important motions and critical depositions, but as a matter of business, they would much rather appear from their desks. Mediators generally have more success settling cases when the parties come together in person. There is a lot of stuff that gets “figured out” when attorneys chat with one another in the lobby or the hallway, which can lay a better framework for an efficient hearing. When discussing this matter with an experienced practitioner, he stated, “Well, I’ve settled a lot of cases in the elevator throughout my career.”

During the June Florida Bar Convention, members of the judiciary from the Ninth Circuit participated on the Masters in Ethics Judicial Panel, specifically discussing the challenges they are seeing with technology. It is safe to say that the convenience of virtual appearance is here to stay. After the many months of social distancing, most are well accommodated to the use of it, but there are common gaps and concerns seen in the courtroom.

While an attorney must be competent to use video and face time applications, they must also make sure the client understands proper decorum when appearing before the court. Decorum may first bring to mind dress and demeanor, but also what appears on the other side of a camera – be it going through a drive through window, lying in bed, wearing tie-dyed pajamas (the list goes on) – occurs more often than expected. These are somewhat lighter examples, but consider witnesses regularly appearing from broom closets and job sites. The impact of flippant testimony could sink

a case and even rise to an ethical violation. Take the time to thoroughly prepare the witness or client and remind them that they are still appearing in a court proceeding, even if sitting at their kitchen table.

Virtual depositions meet strong resistance in some cases: the benefit allows cases to move forward easier, but there are legitimate concerns when testimony is elicited via virtual forum. Although deceptive conduct is prohibited, concerns including deposition “coaching” can still be mitigated. For example, a deponent was ordered to appear at a local court reporting agency, who placed the reporter in the room, meeting social distancing standards, and both attorneys appeared virtually. Even though the court essentially micromanaged the rules of the deposition, the concerns of the parties and witness were able to be addressed, and the case was able to proceed.

In terms of professional conduct, the lack of in-person interaction may actually foster improper behavior. The effects of communication through a screen are thoroughly studied, and few could honestly say there is no difference between virtual and in person contact. The judicial panel agreed that throughout the course of COVID protocols, there were instances where the question arose, “Would that person say that if they were sitting in the courtroom with me?” If that is coming to a judge’s mind, what does that say about the level of “virtual civility” in store for our profession?

Looking forward toward the recent case management directive, the convenience of appearing virtually plays a significant role in moving cases forward. Virtual depositions provide more flexibility to witnesses and attorneys alike. Virtual hearings create an efficiency that parallels the advent of the electronic transmission of letters, and may become just as fundamental as technology moves forward. Although we are moving back to rubbing elbows and riding elevators with opposing counsel, hopefully a balance is struck between virtual and in-person proceedings, because as sung since the sixties, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.”

ou’re sitting at your desk on a Thursday afternoon when you get a text. It’s your niece, and she has a question for you.

Opposing counsel in one of her cases has just set a hearing without clearing it with her first, and she is not available for the hearing. She is in a bit of a panic and does not know what to do. You see, she is only six months out of law school, has opened her own solo practice, and is learning on Kristopher Kest, Esq. the fly how to practice law while running a business. You give her a call back - she prefers texting, but you know the value of a phone call. After calming her down and setting her on the right path to resolving the issue, you get to thinking. What if she didn’t have an Uncle Rob who happened to be an attorney? Who would she text if she didn’t have you?

If she was participating in the Orange County Bar Association’s Mentoring Program, she would have a mentor assigned to her for just that kind of issue. Many of you have served as mentors in our program, and we are grateful for your service. We would love to have you mentor again this year and help us out by recruiting other mentors. Please let your colleagues know how rewarding (and

simple!) it is to mentor a new attorney. The application is quick and easy at the OCBA’s website, and the application deadline is October 1, 2021. Please also like and re-share as the OCBA promotes the program on social media in the coming months.

You already know that being an OCBA mentor is not a huge time commitment. The program only lasts about four months and begins this year on November 1. During those four months, you’ll meet with your mentee at least four times, but with no pre-set schedule or agenda. Legal Aid SocietyTeaching Tips Juvenile Dependency Specialty Courts: A ProblemSolving Approach to Achieving Permanency for Children

S

pecialty courts, also known as problem-solving courts, were first implemented in Florida over 30 years ago as an alternative approach to the traditional justice system. Problem-Solving Courts, Florida Courts, https:// www.flcourts.org/Resources-Services/Court-Improvement/Problem-Solving-Courts (last visited July 13, 2021). The purpose of problem-solving courts is to identify the underlying issue that Jonathan H. Neyer, Esq. contributes to the inception of the case and provide targeted services and treatment that remedies the issue. Specialty courts use a team-based, non-adversarial approach in addition to increased judicial oversight of the case.

There are two Dependency Specialty Courts in Orange County: Dependency Drug Court and Early Childhood Court (referred to primarily as “B.A.B.Y. (Building a Better You) Court”). Cases are most often identified as potential candidates for the programs at the initial Shelter Hearing. Identification of eligibility at this early stage allows for the immediate implementation of the program’s treatment and services for the family. The Drug Court Coordinator or Early Childhood Court Coordinator – whose role on the courtroom team includes taking the lead in identifying services, providers, and ensuring the case meetings/court reviews are scheduled – will review the cases, meet with the parents and attorneys, and determine if the case would be a fit for the program based on certain eligibility criteria. If so, the program will be incorporated as a task in the court-ordered case plan that must be completed by the parent for the child’s safe return to the home.

Dependency Drug Court addresses cases where the abuse, abandonment, or neglect of the child was primarily due to a parent’s substance abuse. Drug court is an intensive program that provides access to alcohol and drug treatment services. The parent is the participant in the program, but there is a support team consisting of the judge, attorneys, guardian ad litem, service providers, family, and friends.

The program consists of four phases of treatment. Each phase has specific requirements that the parent must comply with to advance to the next phase. Upon completion of all four phases and treatment requirements, the parent will be eligible for graduation from the program. Court hearings are held biweekly. The parent’s compliance with treatment is monitored by frequent drug and alcohol testing.

Incentives for the parent for positive progress include gift certificates, fishbowl awards (participant may choose from a variety of items such as coffee mugs, pens, keychains, or portable speaker), and most significantly, increased visitation with their child. Sanctions for noncompliance include judicial warning, requiring completion of a written essay, or imposition of community service hours for violations in the program such as missing treatment sessions, refusing to drug test, or testing positive for substances.

Early Childhood Court addresses cases that involve newborn to fiveyear-old children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected. theBriefs August 2021 Vol. 89 No. 7

A core component of B.A.B.Y. Court is to approach cases through a trauma lens, where the focus is on healing the trauma of both the child and parent. Experiences of trauma have lasting impacts on the child’s development and well-being. B.A.B.Y. Court seeks to prevent the cycle of re-traumatization and provide the parent with the support needed to safely care for their children. One of these supports is the utilization of child-parent psychotherapy.

Child-parent psychotherapy is an evidence-based intervention focused on repairing the child-parent relationship by healing present and past trauma. Hearings are conducted monthly, and family team meetings are also held monthly. The family team meetings are parent-driven and allow the parties and service providers to identify and resolve any potential barriers to completion of the case plan. One of the key benefits of the B.A.B.Y. Court program is increased visitation for the parent and child. As frequent visitation increases the likelihood of reunification, reducing the time the child is in out-of-home care, the B.A.B.Y. Court team works to expand visitation opportunities and locations.

A recent B.A.B.Y. Court case involved two children, ages 4 years old and 4 months old. The children were removed from the mother due to concerns for the mother’s emotional and mental instability.

The mother had threatened to harm the baby when her relationship with the father ended. The father of the older child was incarcerated in the Department of Corrections. At shelter, the baby was placed with the father and the 4-year-old with a non-relative. The B.A.B.Y. Court team worked together to ensure services for the entire family were set up immediately. The baby was behind developmentally and was able to start engaging in therapy. The older child was struggling with removal from her mother and the child-parent-psychotherapy helped the mother learn to manage her emotions and effectively meet the emotional needs of her children. Co-parenting services were set up at the request of the guardian ad litem, and the parents learned how to effectively work together for the best interests of their child. Ultimately, the children were reunified with their mother and the case closed as the children were safe and thriving.

The health, safety, and well-being of the child remains at the forefront in specialty court cases. Dependency issues addressed throughout the case include placement, health, education, visitation, reunification, and permanency. Using a non-adversarial team-based approach, these complex issues can be resolved, children’s safety ensured, timely permanency achieved, and the cycle of abuse, abandonment, and neglect ended. As the advocate for the best interests of the child, the guardian ad litem plays a vital role in the collaborative approach.

LRIS Committee The Lawyer Referral Information Service Panel and Committee (LRIS) is the trifecta in benefits to an attorney, regardless of how long they have been practicing or as a new attorney. am extremely honored to be serving as this year’s president of the Paralegal Section of the Orange County Bar Association.

Our mission is to provide leadership, promote the professionalism and certification of paralegals, encourage and acknowledge professional development, promote global affiliations with other professional associations, and provide enriching networking opportunities.

April Phillips, FRP We have a lot of making up to do with all that was missed over the last year due to COVID, but I am looking forward to getting to work and planning some great events for our members! My focus this year is paralegal education and recognition, as well as helping those in need in our local communities. We will also continue to provide CLE Lunch and Learns for our members.

It is my honor to introduce you to your Paralegal Section Board for the 2021 – 2022 term.

April Phillips, FRP – I am a Florida Registered Paralegal and serve as this year’s president of the Paralegal Section. I have nearly 25 years of combined experience working in the family courts, am a mentor for college students obtaining their degree in the legal field, and enjoy teaching CLE classes to paralegals. I began my legal career doing court appointed guardianship for the elderly and disabled and have spent the last ten years working in family law. In my free time, I love nothing more than watching my son play baseball!

Tina Farrington, CP, FRP, is a paralegal at Moye, O’Brien, Pickert, Dillon & Masterson, LLP and has over 10 years of experience working in the legal field. She is a graduate of the Seminole State Paralegal Studies program and just recently passed the NALA Certified Paralegal exam. She was born and raised in Orlando and enjoys traveling in her spare time. This term Tina will serve on the board as the immediate past president.

Marisol Gomez is a litigation paralegal with Colling Gilbert Wright & Carter since 2010 and has 21+ years of experience in the legal field. She worked as a workers’ compensation legal assistant/paralegal and has been a civil litigation paralegal since 2004 for both plaintiff and defense. She is a long-time volunteer of the Orlando Union Rescue Mission and has served on the Board of the Central Florida Paralegal Association. In her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.

Nancy Jordahl, ACP, FRP, FCP, is a litigation paralegal at Weinberg Wheeler Hudgins Gunn & Dial. She currently serves as secretary/treasurer for the Paralegal Section, nominations and elec-

tions chair for the National Association of Legal Assistants, and the vice-president/president-elect of Central Florida Paralegal Association. She also serves as an appointed member of the Florida Registered Paralegal Enrichment Committee. Nancy is the author of two chapters in NALA’s Certified Paralegal Exam Fundamentals (Torts and Clarity of Expression).

Susan Staggs, CP, FRP, is part of the O’Mara Law Group legal team. Susan studied at Valencia and Seminole State Colleges and has been a nationally certified paralegal since 2008, as well as Florida Registered Paralegal. Susan has worked as family law paralegal since 1997 and prior to that worked with the Clerk of Court from 1985 to 1997 where she served as a court clerk for judges on the civil and family law bench. Susan also currently serves as the administrator for the Central Florida Family Law Inn. Susan enjoys spending time with her amazing husband of over 25 years, two wonderful sons, equally talented paralegal daughter-in-law and three awesome grandchildren.

Jennifer R. Finch, ACP, FRP, is a litigation paralegal working for Winderweedle, Haines, Ward & Woodman, P.A. Jennifer is an Advanced Certified Paralegal and a Florida Registered Paralegal.

She is currently a member of the Central Florida Paralegal Association, the Orange County Bar Association Paralegal Section and NALA – The Paralegal Association. Jennifer is a past president of the Central Florida Paralegal Association. She currently serves on NALA’s Professional Development Committee.

Debbie Hrytzay, FRP, has been employed as a paralegal with RumbergerKirk for the past 10 years. Prior to that, she worked as a paralegal in Liberty Mutual Insurance Company’s legal department for 24 years. Debbie has been a paralegal since 1992 and has over 30 years of legal experience, primarily in personal injury defense. She has served on the board for the Central Florida Paralegal Association and is currently the president of her homeowner’s association. In her spare time, Debbie enjoys gardening and relaxing at the beach.

Paul Pelton, FRP, is a senior litigation paralegal with 30 years of experience in all phases of civil trial work. Paul has handled casework for plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal courts throughout Florida. He serves the citizens of Florida through his appointment by the Supreme Court of Florida to the Standing Committee on the Unlicensed Practice of Law for The Florida Bar. In addition, Paul is a member of the executive council of the OCBA Paralegal Section where he serves as chair of the Paralegal Mentorship Program. He also serves the paralegals of Florida as a member of The Florida Bar Florida Registered Paralegal Enrichment Committee.

Young Lawyers SectionNews YLS on the Move

ur transition back to live events is in full swing and it is making the year fly by!

Early this summer, the YLS board held a special election to fill two at-large vacancies on the board.

We are thrilled to announce that long-time YLS members and rock stars Stephanie Alvarez and John Hunt have joined the board. Stephanie and John have chaired numerous YLS events Linnea M. Eberhart, Esq. over the years, all of which were celebrated successes. We are positive that they’ll bring the same level of dedication and passion to their role as board members. We also appreciate the number of applications we received for the positions and want to encourage everyone to continue their involvement with YLS and apply again when the next cycle opens up.

We were honored to partner with the Hispanic Bar Association of Central Florida to host Judge Luis Calderon at our July luncheon. Judge Calderon was recently appointed to the Court Interpreter Services Board by the Florida Supreme Court and he provided both a timely and important presentation on “Breaking Down the Language Barrier: Certified Court Interpreters & The Justice System.”

After taking a break last year due to COVID-19, we were once again able to host our annual Morning at the State Courthouse program. Law students, clerks, legal staff, and young and experienced lawyers alike joined us at the Orange County Courthouse to take a tour of the courthouse and learn some insider tips on practicing in Orange and Osceola County courts from local attor-

neys and judges and judicial assistants of the Ninth Judicial Circuit. Our thanks to Judge Denise Beamer and Judge John Beamer and committee chairs Adriana Cespedes and James Davis for organizing the event and providing our members with such a unique opportunity to gain insight into the operations of our local courts.

As our students prepare to go back to school, rest assured that YLS and the Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers is right there with them with school supplies at the ready! Thanks to the generosity of our members who donated supplies and provided monetary support, our annual Backpack Project was able to partner with A Gift for Teaching to provide backpacks with essential supplies for the students of Rock Lake Elementary School in preparation of the new school year. We couldn’t have done it without committee chairs Lauryn Day and Gabrielle Sanandajian leading the way and making sure that the students in our community are equipped for success.

Finally, we closed out the summer with a special guest appearance

by President of The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Todd Baker who joined us at our August luncheon to provide us with an update on the state of The Florida Bar YLD, the policy agenda for the year, and ways we can get more involved with the YLD both individually and as an affiliate young lawyers section.

Loung is also a co-screenplay writer of a 2017 Netflix Original Mov- Loung Ung, Onchantho Am ie directed by Angelina Jolie titled “First They Killed My Father” and was selected as one of the “100 Global Youth Leaders of Tomorrow.” As part of their spotlight, GOAABA hosted a fireside chat with Loung Ung on May 26, 2021.

Also on May 26, 2021, GOAABA’s President Onchantho Am was recognized as a Central Florida Asian American leader. Congressman Darren Soto even read her bio into the United States Congressional record. Others recognized included: Adrian Lee, senior undergraduate student at the University of Central Florida; Dr. Francisco Rueda Halili, M.D., F.A.C.S., general surgeon in Kissimmee, FL; Dr. Hefang Lin, founder and president of the Orange County Asian Committee; Newlyn Wing, association manager for Junior Chamber International (JCI) USA, a not-forprofit organization of young active citizens; Sadiqullah Baburi, owner of Kennedy Chicken and Grill in Winter Garden, FL; and PAGE 24

On June 8, 2021, some of GOAABA’s past presidents got together for their annual past presidents’ Christine Berk, Vanessa Braga, Kenway Wong, dinner to reminisce Annie Kwong, Onchantho Am, Leia Leitner about years past as well as look to the future of GOAABA. GOABBA wishes their next president, Kenway Wong, the very best.

A couple of days later, on June 16, 2021, the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) and GOAABA hosted their first in-person event at Rockstar Axe Throwing. It was a great way for members to unwind and have fun throwing axes.

On June 23, 2021, GOAABA members Greg Maaswinkel and Onchantho Am spoke with youth at The Grove about their journey and pathway to becoming attorneys.

The Grove is a residential program Maaswinkel which supports adolescents suffering Greg Onchantho Am from alcohol or substance abuse and in need of a more intensive individual support plan. In addition, through the gracious sponsorship of The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Grant, GOAABA was able to feed well over thirty people.

The Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers Summer marked the final chapter of the Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers (CFAWL) “owning their stories.”

CFAWL hosted an intergalactic themed “Remote Rendezvous” with Quinn Ryan, author of Clark after Dark, a children’s book designed to help educate children about their place in the world, even when they see the world has problems. At this intimate event co-hosted with the Brevard County Bar Association, members were able to network virtually and share space-themed experiences

and favorite movies. Members gained insight into the publishing process while also reflecting on how looking at the world from a distance provides some perspective on global conflict.

ered to enjoy meeting in person for the first time in over a year. This event also provided the opportunity to celebrate and recognize CFAWL’s annual award recipients. Three phenomenal women were presented with awards based upon their commitment and contributions to CFAWL and in the greater community. Sharlene Stanford received the Emerging Leader Award, Mallory Widgren received the Distinguished Leadership Award, and Jamie Billotte Moses received the Carol E. Donahue Legacy Award. This year the Legacy Award was renamed after CFAWL’s first President, Carol E. Donahue, and it was an honor to have Carol’s daughter Jennifer join CFAWL for the ceremony.

Members of the Board of Directors as well as Leadership Team spent the day planning for the new year ahead and getting to know each other better.

In July, CFAWL returned to in-person events with a Young Lawyer’s Judicial Roundtable event featuring Chief Judge Munyon, the Ninth Judicial Circuit’s first female Chief Judge. Judge Munyon has been a long-time CFAWL member. This event was made possible by a grant received by The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division and it provided an amazing opportunity not only for young lawyers to have questions answered, but also for them to feel empowered. The event was filled with conversation, insight, and encouragement, and CFAWL thanks both Judge Munyon and the YLD for their time and support.

Also in July, CFAWL hosted its first in-person luncheon, featuring the Installation of the 2021-2022 CFAWL Board of Directors and the Passing of the Gavel to incoming President Heather Meglino. Heather’s theme for the year is “CFAWL We Got This!” This theme embraces the spirit of overcoming challenges and adversity, and that together, we can overcome any challenges ahead of us.
