Educating Paradise

A Season of Hope Hello Fellow Makos, And a big Merry Christmas to you all! It is that most favorite time of year! The city, churches, and schools are nearly in unison as we do Christmas better than any community I know all while maintaining focus on the Hope of the Season.

Hope is our family’s favorite word. You will find hope reminders on the shelves and walls of our home; literally, every room is full of hope. Hope is often described as a feeling of expectation, to want something to happen or be true. I believe there are two types of hope. Intentional hope is the appetite for attainment, while dispositional hope is the state of being hopeful.

Reflecting on this past semester and last school year, intentional hope is most evident in our many accomplishments. Earning an “A” on the state report card was perhaps our greatest feat - the elementary school’s leap of six points set the expectations of academic excellence for everyone. Attendance this semester is much improved; the elementary and middle/high schools' average daily attendance rates are 95% and 93%, respectively. The new elementary cafetorium, library ribbon cutting event, and the groundbreaking of the middle and high school athletic complex ceremony were the byproducts of intentional hope, as were the community-wide beach pep rally and parents' and grandparents' day events. This appetite for attainment is the fuel for student, school, and system success.

Mind you, when hope is extreme, it changes its nature and becomes confidence and assurance; it creates a “swagger” within the environment. While we are away for a few weeks, take some time to work on your strut (maybe your sashay) for when we return, we will plunge into the second semester with intentional hope and its best friends of systems, processes, and structure.

Athletic Complex Groundbreaking This ambitious project, driven by the collective vision of our school board and the Mayor and City Council, is set to revolutionize athletic opportunities for our community and change the game forever. With an unwavering commitment to our students, the complex is designed to benefit 80% of local students, providing them access to state-of-the-art facilities that promise to elevate their sporting experience to new heights.

This facility is not just an investment in sports; it's an investment in the well-being and development of the entire community.

In crafting this athletic complex, the vision goes beyond bricks and mortar. It encompasses a commitment to fostering a culture of excellence. With a $46 million commitment from community leaders and the city council, the upcoming athletic complex is more than just a construction project; it's a testament to the power of vision and community collaboration.

As the complex takes shape, it is destined to change the landscape of athletics in the city, offering opportunities, facilities, and a sense of pride that will resonate for generations to come. The groundbreaking initiative reflects a shared commitment to fostering a healthier, more connected, and vibrant community through the transformative power of sports and the unwavering vision of expecting nothing short of excellence.

November 7, 2023 On October 17, 2023, the Mayor and City Council of Orange Beach unanimously approved a resolution supporting the construction of an athletic complex on the Orange Beach Middle and High School campus. In a special-called Board Meeting on October 10, 2023, the Orange Beach Board of Education unanimously approved the bid awarding the project to Bear Construction of Pensacola, FL. The 100-year facilities will include a gymnasium, multi-sport pavilion, Kinesiology and Exercise Science Building, track, soccer/football fields with grandstands, and other support facilities.

Competition Gymnasium The gymnasium will seat 1,200 spectators for numerous academic, athletic, and co-curricular activities. Extracurricular activities, such as but not limited to volleyball, basketball, and wrestling, will benefit from this addition. The center-hung video boards will be operated by students, providing hands-on, minds-on learning opportunities for students interested in television productions and digital media.

Kinesiology and Exercise Science Building The two-story Kinesiology and Exercise Science Building will consist of classroom and meeting spaces, strength and conditioning facilities, a physical therapy room, cheerleading, wrestling, and football locker rooms, storage, wrestler and cheerleader practice areas, and coaching cubicles and offices. Within the building, there are learning opportunities for students pursuing careers in health sciences and/or physical education via an 80-seat theatre-style space that can be used as two classrooms, a sports-medicine rehabilitation center for student trainers to gain hands-on experience (i.e., hydrocollator, ice machine, six exam tables, and two rehabilitation and recovery plunge pools, etc.), and a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning facility, which will be utilized by every student-athlete.

Track The eight-lane track will encircle the turfed soccer/football field and contain a high jump, long jump, pole vault, javelin, and discus areas.

Stadium The stadium's grandstand will seat 3,500, and its lighting is LED. Restrooms and concession areas are included. The state-of-the-art Jumbo-Tron and gymnasium's center-hung video boards will be operated by students, providing hands-on, minds-on learning opportunities for students interested in television productions and digital media. Every physical education class may utilize new facilities.

Multi-Purpose Pavilion The multi-purpose pavilion may be used for academic, co-, or extracurricular activities. During inclement weather, the turfed surface will be utilized by various organizations. The multi-purpose pavilion’s dimensions are 150' by 200' with a 60' apex.

Usage Every student-athlete will benefit from the new facility regardless of athletic affiliation. If used today, approximately 80% of all students would benefit directly from the facility. Currently, cheerleaders and wrestling teams practice off campus, strength and conditioning classes are conducted in a storage unit facility, students do not have track facilities, and seven basketball teams and five volleyball teams use one court. There are over 400 student-athletes who need adequate practice, storage, and locker room spaces. Countless events will be held in the new facility (i.e., band festivals, philanthropic events, 7-on-7 camps, basketball and volleyball tournaments, and track and wrestling meets), helping the local economy.

Note of Appreciation Orange Beach City Schools would like to thank the Orange Beach Board of Education members, the Orange Beach City Council, and Mayor Tony Kennon for supporting students and staff and their commitment to excellence. Completion date is estimated to be May 30, 2025.

Q&A with Principal Shaw What made you decide to accept the Principal position in Orange Beach?

This was a great opportunity for me to come to a new school system that has the vision of becoming the best school system in the state.

The support of the community, central office, and the city council in seeing that they are willing to use all available resources to see that every student succeeds here at school and their future endeavors.

Tell us a little about your professional experience.

I spent 15 years as a classroom teacher and coach here at Robertsdale and Fairhope before I became an administrator. This is my 18th year as a principal in which I served as principal in Atlanta, Hoover, and Huntsville areas.

What is your favorite thing about your schools?

My favorite thing is to see students grow academically and their extracurricular endeavors. It is great when students achieve their goals. I enjoy seeing everyone inside the building working together in ensuring that all students receive the best education possible.

What is your favorite part of living in this community?

My favorite part about this community is that it has a small town feel. The unity of the community with businesses, schools, and churches is what makes this town great. Every decision that is made is what is best for Orange Beach.

What are your goals for this year?

Create a climate where students are excited about learning. Create a positive school climate. Building a team atmosphere with teachers and staff.

Q&A with Principal Law What made you decide to accept the Principal position in Orange Beach?

The principal position at Orange Beach Elementary was just the right fit for me. I was fortunate to get to experience OBES as a parent three times before becoming the principal. I wanted to support teachers in their efforts to provide a top-notch education, while making learning fun. I have a strong commitment to this community and academic excellence.

Facing the challenges that came with becoming a City school system provided valuable experiences and opportunities for me to learn and grow. I’ve been fortunate to have some amazing mentors along the way!

Tell us a little about your professional experience.

I became the Principal at Orange Beach Elementary in 2021. I am currently enrolled in Auburn’s PhD program for Administration of Elementary & Secondary Education. I believe in lifelong learning and hope that I can be a role model for others. I also strive to balance living “a work hard, play hard” life in this beautiful place we get to call home.

What is your favorite thing about your schools?

It’s the smiles from the students, teachers, staff, parents and visitors. It’s a great place to be, and it’s evident that everyone is happy to be here.

What is your favorite part of living in this community?

I am so excited about the future of Orange Beach! The unanimous decision for the new athletic complex and the sense of community I experienced at the City Council meeting in October are indicative of the positivity within our community. That night was a moment that made me proud to call Orange Beach my home. Hearing the collective voices of students and community leaders, joined together in a resounding amen and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, made me proud to live in Orange Beach. It might be cliche, but I feel fortunate to raise our children in a place that celebrates “God and country.”

What are your goals for this year?

My goal is to continue to excel in everything we do. We wouldn’t be able to do this without the support we have from the Central Office, School Board, our Mayor, City Council, and the parents in this community. I hope to continue to inspire and recognize leadership in others. Each person in our school has something to offer!

The annual Legacy Celebration Banquet is set for January 30th, 2023. This momentous occasion brings together the school community to recognize and celebrate the exceptional achievements and unwavering dedication of teachers, staff, and community volunteers. This event serves as a platform to honor those individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom, exhibited outstanding character, and set high expectations, and/or have contributed significantly to the legacy of success within the school. Our Teachers of the Year, Staff Member of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year will be recognized along with many other accomplishments made by our faculty and staff.

One of the primary purposes of the Legacy Celebration Banquet is to shine a spotlight on those who have consistently demonstrated excellence. These exceptional individuals go above and beyond to create engaging and impactful learning experiences, fostering an environment where students can thrive academically and personally. Whether through innovative teaching methods, personalized attention, self-sacrifice of time and talent, or a genuine passion for their subject matter, these leaders leave an indelible mark on the lives of our students.

Character education is an integral part of a holistic approach to student development, and the Legacy Celebration Banquet recognizes those who lead by example. These honorees are not only outstanding but also serve as exemplary role models who inspire students with their integrity, compassion, and dedication. CELEBRATING EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS

The new Orange Beach Elementary School Cafetorium served as the perfect backdrop for this year’s Parents’ Day. For the first time, parents gathered in the new facility for this event, creating an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie. A bountiful spread awaited the diners, featuring the quintessential Thanksgiving meal, complete with creamy mashed potatoes and stuffing. The cafetorium buzzed with activity, as parents sat with their children, engaging in conversations, sharing stories, and relishing the chance to experience a day in the life of their little ones.

The success of the Parent's Day Thanksgiving Meal was a testament to the hard work put in by the school staff. From meticulously planning the event to ensuring a smooth execution, the dedication of the staff shone through. Their efforts not only made the event possible, but also created an atmosphere where we hope parents felt welcomed and appreciated.

It was an amazing day filled with laughter, connection, and a shared sense of gratitude—a true embodiment of the spirit of Thanksgiving within the school community. Thank you to all the parents who were able to come and share in this annual event at Orange Beach Elementary.

We LOVE our Grands!

Having our grandparents visit Orange Beach Elementary School is one of the highlights of the holiday season! This year was no exception!

Our grands filled the gym with love and laughter.

Helping to create memorable ornaments, grandparents measured ribbons to remember just how tall the kiddos were this season. We enjoyed cookies, treats, and took tons of photos.

Thank you to all who supported this event! We are already looking forward to having our grands on campus again!

Orange Beach City Schools Theatre Department Shines at Trumbauer 2023 State Competition The Orange Beach City Schools Theatre Department, under the exceptional leadership of Director Grace Stanton, is proud to announce their outstanding achievements at the highly competitive Trumbauer 2023 State Competition.

In a field of 114 schools and with 2,000 talented students, the competition was nothing short of fierce. Yet, our dedicated group of high school students showcased their remarkable talents and commitment, earning accolades that reflect their dedication to the performing arts.

Four of our remarkable students soared to the top, securing prestigious placements: 1st Place Duet Musical: Luiza Salazar and Elizabeth Rayfield 2nd Place Solo Musical: Kenlee Leighton 2nd Place Solo Acting: Ro Barnett These achievements demonstrate the exceptional talent and hard work of our students, as they stood out among the best in the state.

But the success doesn't stop there! A total of 16 performances received the highest honor possible, the Superior rating. This remarkable feat underscores the level of excellence upheld by the Orange Beach City School’s Theatre Department. These achievements reflect not only the exceptional talent of our students but also the unwavering dedication of Director Grace Stanton and the entire Orange Beach City Schools Leadership Team.

Director Grace Stanton expressed her pride saying, “Our theatre students showcased a level of dedication and talent over the weekend, and I could not be more proud of the acknowledgement they received! We are building an exceptional program that our community should be very proud of.”

The Orange Beach City Schools Theatre Department remains committed to nurturing the creative talents of our students and is excited to see what the future holds for these exceptional young artists.

First period middle school theater performed The Merrie Christmas Show.

This student production was assistant directed by Tori Durden and Gabby Meehan. These students did a fantastic job. Under the direction of Mrs. Grace Stanton, students are encouraged to take on new challenges and push themselves to be their very best. These young students certainly rose to the challenge!

The OBMHS Band set the stage for a true holiday celebration!

Our concert band did not disappoint during their holiday concert. Performing Sparkling Lights, African Bell Carol, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and Yes, Virginia There is a Santa Claus. These 37 musicians truly entertained on stage. The lights and “snow” gave those fortunate enough to attend a full holiday experience. This remarkable group has proven once again that they have incredible talent and have set the bar for performing. Under the direction of Mr. Justin McCall, our band program is thriving; you won’t want to miss their next performance!

‘Tis the Season for Music!

Our student musicians and performers were magical this holiday season.

From PreK to 12th grade, students shone brightly on stage. Read below for a detailed recap of the tremendous performances.

Beginning Band Our Beginning Band Concert at OBES featured the following songs: Up on the Housetop, Jingle Bells, Silent Night, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. This was the largest band of the night with around 45 students, which is about half of the 6th grade class.

Up on the housetop is a classic holiday tune that gave each section a change to be highlighted with exposed section features and tricky fingerwork.

Our Percussion section was featured on the song Jingle Bells. Our rhythm section is Noah Back-Archer, Greyson Blanchard, Kylie Stacks, and Colton Slade. The medley was performed by Kinley Eaton and Tehannah Walker.

“Jingle Bells” were performed by Percussionist Gunner Bryant, as well as a Tenor Saxophone Player Isabella Jaime.

Silent Night opened with a woodwind melody, and concluded with a duet from Trumpet Player Kailou Bazor and Baritone Player Cedar Swafford. This particular piece challenged our 6th grade students with dotted rhythms, a more advanced technique for instrumentalists in band.

Our final song of the night was “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” performed by a small ensemble including Lyla Grace Saffold (Baritone), Alex Miller (Trumpet), Tanner Beasley (Trombone), Kolbie Williams (Tuba), Jilly Fitzgerald (French Horn), Sophia Meehan (Clarinet), Emma Brett or Henry Thomas (Alto Saxophone), Isabella Jaime (Tenor Saxophone) and Joni Lynch and Paisley Donkel (Flutes).

5th & 6th Grade Our 5th and 6th Grade Students performed “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”, “Jingle Bell Rock”, and “Snow, Snow, Snow” for their Christmas Concert this year. This concert tied in traditional holiday songs with more modern songs, like our featured video of “Snow, Snow, Snow”. Our student speakers are Emma, Edward, Harper, Lyla Grace, and Saylor from 6th Grade.

3rd & 4th Grade Our 3rd and 4th Grade students performed an assortment of songs including “Christmas Island”, “Sleigh Ride”, and “Hip-Hop Reindeer”. We had two soloists for Christmas Island by Jimmy Buffet, which are Cannon Callaway (3rd grade) and Thomas Cooper (4th grade) who worked hard to prepare for their debut! Attached are photos of 3rd and 4th Grade Performers and the feature video of “Christmas Island”. Our student speakers are Ruth, Kyleigh, Sam, Michael, and Azalea from 4th Grade.

1st & 2nd Grade Our OBES 1st and 2nd Grade students performed their Christmas Concert with the following songs: Decorate the Tree, Silent night, and Blitzen’s Boogies (which is the video featured). These students have worked really hard to prepare this concert and they did a wonderful job! Blitzen’s Boogie was the closer of the night which focused on a different reindeer without the Red-Nose!

Our student speakers are Mason, Lyla Katherine, Avery, and Micah from 2nd Grade.

PreK & Kindergarten Our Pre-K and Kindergarten students performed their Christmas Concert featuring “Ring Those Christmas Bells”, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", and “Santa is his Name-O”. The students are seen in the video singing “Santa is His Name-O” which is a spin on “B-I-N-G-O”. Attached in the folder is Pre-K and Kindergarten student pictures and a feature video.

Our student speakers for this performance are Luke, Pearson, Vivian, and Martha from Kindergarten.

Orange Beach City Schools loves our Veterans!

In a heartwarming celebration, our students gathered to pay tribute to our heroes through a morning filled with honoring, singing, and poetry. At OBES, veterans from different branches of the military were invited as guests of honor. Children eagerly awaited their arrival. The air was filled with patriotic tunes, as young voices harmonized to create a moving and memorable experience. Songs like "America the Beautiful" and "God Bless America" echoed through the gym, creating a sense of unity and pride.

In a collaborative effort, children also worked to create a moving tribute as our veterans made their way to the cafetorium for a reception. The halls were lined with hand-made drawings, poems, and images of appreciation for those who have served our country.

As the day unfolded, it became clear that the children's celebration of Veterans Day was more than just a one-time event. It was a powerful reminder that the sacrifices of our veterans are not forgotten and that the values of honor, service, and unity are passed down to the next generation. Through honoring, singing, and poetry, these young hearts expressed their gratitude in a way that truly resonated with both the veterans and the community at large, leaving an indelible mark on this year's Veterans Day celebration.

Our teachers, students, and administrators have worked so hard and proven that our students are excelling in the classroom. OBES earned a 95, and OBMHS earned an 85.

We are so proud of Kerri for going above and beyond to ensure student success! Congratulations and we are very proud of you!

This season more than any other, I am grateful for those who have sacrificed, labored, and invested in our school system. I am grateful for those in leadership who continue to “do the right things for the right reasons.” I am grateful for the strong guidance of our school board, whose selfless leadership often goes unrecognized. I am grateful to the parents who entrust us daily with their most precious treasures—their children. Moreover, the unwavering support of our community and its leaders creates an environment where the belief that children are our most valuable resource is not just a sentiment but a guiding principle. This season presents so much to be thankful for, but above all, I am profoundly thankful for the unsung heroes of our school system—those who sacrifice, labor, and invest tirelessly in shaping the future. As we reflect on the significance of this season, let us carry forward the spirit of thankfulness into the coming year.
