David LaChapelle: As the World Turns will bring together more than 100 works from the internationally acclaimed photographer at the Orlando Museum of Art. It includes never-before-seen pieces from early religious figurative works, fashion editorials and celebrity portraiture to allegorical compositions exploring spirituality, environmental fragility, and transcendence. He has captured some of the most recognizable figures in film, music, art, politics and sports, including Amy Winehouse, Britney Spears, David Hockney, Dolly Parton, Eminem, Sabrina Carpenter and Snoop Dogg. The exhibition, opening January 31, will also feature the world premiere of a monumental new expansive piece that draws inspiration from classical fresco techniques and grand historical compositions, made possible by Deodato Arte, Italy. omart.org

LIGHT IT UP! Lighting is often called the jewelry of the home, and a tour through Lightstyle of Orlando with President Tricia Holliday revealed thousands of sparkling, sculptural and organic style pendants, chandeliers, sconces and lamps, as well as furniture, art and accessories. It could be a little overwhelming without the knowledgeable staff to find you exactly what you want.

ith so many items in stock and on display, I asked Tricia about the trends she is seeing. “People are really going for the dramatic with pendulums and pendants. They are very customizable because you can place them however you like — you can have five, seven, eleven

or whatever you want. You can make them ornate with more or simpler with fewer.

It’s more about finding what your vision really is and what makes you fall in love.

There are no hard and fast rules now. It truly is about your space, your vibe and your needs,” she says.

Although alabaster remains popular, even more organic products are on the rise.

Handmade with a variety of shells and other natural materials, they exude a casual feel in meticulously finished styles from floral motifs to fringed beads. For a pop of color, glass pieces in a variety of hues and shapes are also taking center stage.

Circular lighting continues to have more than a moment. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a square table or a rectangular table as long as the scale is right. You don’t have to have a linear light just because that’s the type of table you have,” she explains.

sHOWROOM sHOPPING In addition to many well-known brands, designer lighting is also featured throughout the showroom, which is a very different experience than shopping online or from a catalog. “You have to see it in person to take in the details, like what the alabaster looks like, how long the drop is or how exquisite the sparkle is. We’ve got all the designer names — basically anything anybody sees somewhere we either have it in here or we can get it for you,” Tricia shares.

In addition to what you see in store, Lightstyle also creates custom pieces for a one-ofa-kind look. Tricia estimates that is about 10 percent of their business. And for designers, they offer 60-day holds, special terms and excellent pricing. “We have things that you can’t buy direct because we’re the sole provider here in Central Florida. And if there’s a problem with it, we take that on. You don’t want to be a lighting store, you want to be a designer, so let us be the lighting store,” she says.

As homeowners update their homes more frequently than in the past, new lighting can really change a room. “I think that people should change the lighting every 10 years if not earlier than that because your vibe changes and your life changes. We shouldn’t have boring lighting. But if you find something that you love and it’s a little bit out of your league, we will find you something that’s very similar within your budget,” she adds.

They just refreshed everything — it’s an amazing house — but they wanted to mix modern and traditional and didn’t want it to be so stuffy. When we started on the kitchen it was darker and they wanted to lighten it up,” Jose says.

“I

think trends always move on a ramp — you start to see changes, but it’s not super drastic. We’re definitely getting away from those all-white and gray design palettes. We still do a lot of white kitchens but combined with natural materials — real woods, natural stone countertops and wood flooring. They bring in warmth, and from a color standpoint, whites are going creamier in tone,” says Krista Agapito, designer and director of sales at S&W Kitchens.

“If a client comes to me and they say they want a white kitchen, I’m going to have them step back and take a mile-high

view and tell me what they are trying to achieve. If it is a white kitchen then I’m going to give it to them, but it’s a designer’s job to push them a little bit out of their comfort zone,” she continues.

She’s also seeing the return of highgloss finishes in club rooms, bars and laundry rooms. It will probably make a return in the kitchen as well. As for the prevalence of open floor plans, she thinks those are still in vogue, but often with the addition of butler pantries, storage pantries with pocket doors, and even second kitchens.

“I’m working on a lot of the luxury projects where we often design second

kitchens. These are back kitchens where the real work happens and it’s hidden from view. With hidden pantries there may be a counter space for small appliances to keep any clutter away from the main kitchen,” she explains.

“Kitchen islands continue to be popular, and they are getting bigger and bigger.

“I think it’s because people are less formal than in previous decades when they may have had meals around a dining table.

I’m doing one right now, that’s 10'x12' without a sink or appliances. But it has cabinetry storage and it’s going to seat eight,” she adds. Double islands are also often requested.

Real woods, natural stone tops, and wood flooring in kitchens are back. Wood tones coming in are not all blonde — we’re doing some darker woods like smoked oaks. It’s more of an organic, modern style that’s coming from Europe.

Metro Finishes Specializes in Exceeding Expectations Artists and artisans at their core, the leadership team at Metro Finishes is a group of very passionate professionals who pride themselves on bringing clients’ visions to life and making the seemingly impossible, possible.

THE COMPANY WAS STARTED BY CHARLES MARKLIN AND HIS FORMER BUSINESS PARTNER, who had graduated from Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, back when faux painting and finishes were very popular and common in custom Mediterranean-style homes in affluent neighborhoods like Isleworth. They were careful to not include “faux” in their name, which proved to be a good move. But when the housing bust descended in 2008, many people put their home projects on hold. That’s when Metro Finishes began diversifying. Now their services include murals, custom artwork, themed and specialty construction, scenic and surface treatments, specialty painting and finishing, design and concept development, and on-site field support and art direction. We sat down with leaders Charles, Gustavo Llenas and Sam Quattry to talk about their evolution, processes and projects.

“Since the market had slowed I took the portfolio that we had to Disney and they liked what they saw and thought that we’d be a good fit for some smaller things. We got signed on board as a vendor, then went into the theme park industry scenic world. Our first big job was at the Art of Animation Resort where we were hired by a painting contractor to draw out and paint the whole exterior. It’s very animated, colorful and character driven — I’m talking about a 40-by-50-foot shark that we had to figure out how to even draw,” Charles says.

These new jobs necessitated more trained staff and the company started growing. On the residential side, the work included a lot of fine plaster finishes. And they found clients 24

feeling reassured about the artisans and the process because they knew Metro was doing things for Disney.

“Once they know that you deliver whatever they ask, you actually bring the bar a little higher. Some clients have big ideas and we can deliver them. So, they love the idea that we simultaneously do residential and commercial work,” Gustavo adds.

But there is another element of trust that comes from the team members’ backgrounds.

“The founder of the company is classically trained artistically and everybody from leadership down has an artistic background. So, when we’re interacting with clients and with interior designers, we speak that language and we can understand what they’re talking about most of the time,” Sam explains.

They also have to speak about business and budgets, and make sure everyone is sufficiently trained and proficient for whatever job they will be taking on. And they must constantly keep up with trends and techniques. “We are definitely following the trends, but the shift in the trends is that pendulum where the faux swung to an extreme and designs went more minimalistic. Now, we see it balancing out. That’s why we never wanted the word faux to be part of our name. We wanted to stay on top of the trend but not be defined by it. When Venetian plaster was popular, it was typically a tan, old world look. But we were experimenting with modern colors and doing what no one thought about. So, it’s staying on top of trends, but also showing the market you’re delivering a fresh, forward take,” Charles says.

They all agree there is a rebalancing of design where clients now want some of the nostalgic finishes, but with a new, organic movement. “A lot of what we do is experimenting with lime and newer materials that have been designed to create these finishes that have a natural look. We are asked for a spattering of fine art accents, but the majority of requests are for a clean, organic-feeling finish on the walls and ceilings,” Sam adds.

On the residential side of the business, it’s usually the designer or builder who reaches out since the company relies heavily on word-of-mouth recommendations. Metro Finishes has been a part of the industry for so many years they have developed deep ongoing relationships and are always meeting new players in the design-build world.

oving away from modern, minimal all-white spaces, this lakefront home features a darker, moodier palette with tactile elements. “We layered a number of textures on top of each other — linear wood with reveals, black siding on the exterior, porcelain, and lots of pattern. Even the

floors are anthracite toned,” says designer Rob Turner. And throughout there is extensive direct and indirect lighting.

The well-thought-out design definitely takes advantage of the beautiful views. Large sliders open out to the spacious lanai that includes several lounge areas — even a daybed swing — and a dining table that seats 12. There’s a cohesive continuation of mixed materials.

Indoors, the dining space is anchored by a large, live-edge table from the Phillips Collection and highlighted with two pendant-clustered lights that also showcase the ceiling detail. In the family gathering room, a warm ambiance floods the space. “Around the fireplace is another use of linear wood that we had to put together on-site, and then there’s some bands of porcelain below that look like limestone,” he adds.

There’s an adjacent bar area accented with a large piece of art, a signature of Rob’s designs, and gray painted panels with reveals. On this home he worked with Axiom Fine Art for

curation. The kitchen is a standout combining functionality with sleek aesthetics. Instead of a typical island, there is a wood table attached for casual meals.

Porcelain panels line the wall behind the luxury range and smoked glass, lacquered, paneled doors lead to a hidden, working kitchen and pantry. Again, the deeper hues play against the lighter ones, even though they are still fairly neutral tones.

THE SECOND-FLOOR LANDING SPACE IS A BRIGHT NOOK FOR READING. IN THE INVITING KITCHEN, COOL CONTEMPORARY IS COMBINED WITH WARM ACCENTS. A DOUBLE-HEIGHT CEILING VISUALLY EXPANDS THE FAMILY ROOM WHILE THE DETAILING AND TEXTURES CREATE A COMFORTABLE COCOON FOR GATHERING. AN UPSTAIRS LOUNGE IS A COMFORTABLE SPOT WITH A LARGE SECTIONAL SOFA. WINTER 2026 39

For the downstairs powder room, Rob used a herringbone pattern for the patterned tile, a black countertop sink and fun pendants. In the stair landing, there is a moment for relaxing with a book among pops of yellow and orange.

Upstairs, there is a lounge area with a comfortable sectional sofa and picture windows that bring the outdoors in.

In the primary bedroom, the use of extensive lighting is fully illustrated. For some quiet serenity, Rob chose to keep the mood calm with shades of gray from the paneled headboard wall to the nightstands, chairs and abstract art.

Overall, the home exudes a thoughtful melding of contemporary styles with warmth and natural details. “This was a home we designed for a young family and they really wanted a fun home that they could entertain in and enjoy their lake views.
