When a world traveling couple sought a beachside retreat, they spent months and months exploring the west coast of Florida before heading east — and finding their dream lot in New Smyrna Beach. And with architect Geoffrey Mouen and builder Charlie Clayton they created their dream home.
The owners of a 2008 Mediterranean home in Lake Nona were looking for a remodel that better reflected their tastes and interests. They called on Phil Kean Design Group to turn their dated property into a modern masterpiece.
Designer Anne Rue was challenged to create an appealing ambiance in a 4,983-square-foot model home that features an additional living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, similar to a traditional mother-in-law suite.
Designer Eric Horner’s client desired a new home in Winter Park, but the search yielded few results. After finally finding the one, there was just one big challenge — how to make it more contemporary without stripping away the traditional character.

In recent years, popular architectural and interior styles tend to be hybrids rather than monolithic in their design language. The most popular expression is known as a transitional style — a mix of modern and traditional elements. The latest leaning is “modern-transitional” with emphasis on the “modern.” The style is a delicate dance between sleek and geometric elements counterbalanced with warm, soft and organic features. To learn more about this emerging aesthetic, I toured a new custom home by interior designer Kate Clarke, owner of Homes Re-imagined,

Interiors by Nathan Vanags, NCIDQ, are typically streamlined and very modern. But for his renovation of an East Orlando home, the designer met the homeowners halfway and created a more textural and transitional refresh for the newly emptynester couple. The result is a beautiful transformation from a formerly family-focused décor to a more elegant and curated environment.
“
T
his project stretched me and pushed me from my streamlined look into an earthy and textural movement,” says Nathan, who fell
in love with the color scheme and enjoyed the clients in the process. The homeowners, Tony and Lena Scruggs, had seen their children off to college and were ready for a new interior layout to facilitate the large parties they often host. “It had a ’90s feel to it,” Nathan notes. “We dramatically updated both the color scheme and the functionality of the home.”

designingMINDS The master bathroom was gutted and newly created with a spacious dream closet; walls and ceilings were refinished; and new custom millwork was added throughout the house. The bar space was redesigned, and evenly spread architectural lighting was installed throughout. Other new light fixtures are by Robert Allen and Arteriors. A honeycomb-colored sofa by Wesley Hill, a bamboo and silk rug from Carpet Source, an ottoman from Vanguard, and custom-designed leather side chairs all reflect understated elegance in the living room. A metal, stone and wood design completes the fireplace mantel and hearth. In the dining room, a new grass cloth wall covering sets the textural tone. “This room is a classic take on a rustic Southern
look,” Nathan says. “Both Tony and Lena are natives of the South and both of them attended Clemson University in South Carolina.” The look is a mixture of elegance and casual comfort. Curved dining chairs were selected for comfort, “and they make dining more engaging,”Nathan adds. The 3,300-square-foot home has three bedrooms and three and a half baths. A refresh for the kitchen added new cabinet doors in light and dark tones of maple and walnut. In the front entryway, Nathan created earthy texture with a wall covering of gravel-shaded mica and new wall sconces. Original artwork in the house is from AXIOM Fine Art in Winter Park. recently had the amazing opportunity to host a group aboard a Danube River Cruise. And I can honestly say that if you have ever
considered this style of vacationing, I highly recommend it. It was actually my second river cruise and although it was with a different cruise line, they were both equally enjoyable. For those of you that have sailed on the mega ships of today, river cruising is definitely a more relaxed and slower paced journey. That’s not to say that the experience on these beautiful waterways is not adventurous, it’s just simplified. For starters there are usually only 160 guests or so on the vessel. The median age is around 50, although there have been young parents and children on board. These trips also allow you the opportunity to get up close and personal with the destinations you are visiting. On most itineraries the ships dock in the middle of the town, village or city, sometimes for the day and sometimes overnight. What is unique to river cruising is that as you leave the ship to begin your daily adventures and excursions you are never met with an onslaught of souvenir shops or peddlers. On the contrary, you immediately feel as though you are a local, one with the city, and that you have finally arrived. Our most recent journey took us from Nuremberg, Germany to Budapest, Hungary. Stops along the way included charming towns and cities including Regensburg, Passau, Salzburg, Linz, Melk and Vienna.

Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add half the onions, garlic, bay leaves, thyme and salt and pepper, and cook until the onions are very soft and caramelized, then add remaining onions and cook about 15 minutes more. Add the flour and incorporate well. Next add the sweet vermouth, dijon mustard, soy sauce and kitchen bouquet. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer until the wine has evaporated and the onions are almost dry, about 3 minutes. Then add the beef broth, bring the soup back to a simmer, and cook for 10 minutes. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper. When you’re ready to eat, preheat the broiler. Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet in a single layer. Sprinkle the slices with the gruyère and broil until bubbly and golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes.

Peel and devein the shrimp. Heat the butter in a small skillet and add the shallots and mushrooms. Cook 7 minutes and then add the wine and soy sauce. Cook until the wine almost evaporates. Add the shrimp and paprika. Cook, stirring, about 4 minutes. Add the sour cream and cook just until the cream is piping hot without boiling. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir in the dill. Serve over basmati rice.

Combine vinaigrette ingredients in a mixer or Vita-Prep blender until smooth. Taste to adjust seasoning, store in refrigerator up to 4 days. Arrange 4 salad plates on kitchen counter. On a cookie sheet lay out all of the tomato slices and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Next begin with placing a red tomato slice at approximately 12:00 in the upper middle portion of the plate, working clockwise to create a semicircle; place a basil leaf on that tomato slice, followed by a yellow tomato slice, another basil leaf, and then the heirloom slice. Place 3 watermelon balls strategically around each piece and then drizzle each plate with the vinaigrette. Finally, divide bleu goat cheese and sprinkle over the tomatoes and then complete with a pinch of micro herbs. Sprinkle with black sesame seeds and serve immediately.

Chocolate Ganache Cake 1/4 pound unsalted butter at room temperature, 72° 1 cup sugar 2 teaspoons salt 5 large eggs 1 16-ounce jar dark chocolate syrup 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup all-purpose flour
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Butter and flour an 8-inch round cake pan, then line the bottom with parchment paper. Cream the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, followed by the salt. Mix in the chocolate syrup and vanilla. Slowly add the flour and mix until just combined. Do not over mix, or the cake texture will be tough. Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until just set in the middle. Take caution to not over bake. Let cool thoroughly in the pan.
For the ganache: 1/2 cup heavy cream 8 ounces premium semisweet chocolate chips 1 teaspoon instant coffee granules
For the ganache, on medium-low heat cook the heavy cream, chocolate chips and instant coffee in the top of a double boiler over simmering water until smooth and warm, stirring occasionally. Place the cake upside down on a wire rack and pour the glaze evenly over the top, making sure to cover the entire cake and sides. You can tilt the rack to smooth the glaze. Decorate with fresh strawberries or blackberries if desired, or gently crumble shaved white chocolate over the cake. Do not refrigerate and serve within 3 hours. Or refrigerate overnight up to 3 days; remove from refrigerator 1 hour before serving.

K ITC H E N A full-home remodel in Windermere features a custom La Cornue range and matching rotisserie in the kitchen. The young homeowners loved the traditional look and natural stone, and they also wanted to include dramatic, glamorous touches. We met their goals by incorporating inset cabinetry with traditional corbels and mirrored cabinet doors, as well as an intricate marble backsplash and massive architectural range hood, into the new design. The rotisserie is surrounded by cabinetry that provides ample storage in an area that was under-utilized in the former kitchen, and the island is topped with a polished stone that reflects the sparkling pendant lighting above it.

“W
e had been looking for oceanfront property for quite a long time. And then my husband retired
back in 2017 so we had more time to devote to driving around Florida and looking. We came upon this property in New Smyrna Beach and bought it. Then we drove home kind of looking at each other and thought, ‘oh my.’ We had never spent any time in New Smyrna — not even a day. We thought maybe it was a crazy decision, but it has worked out really great,” Susannah Dodds says. There was an existing house on the property which they tore down and started the search for an architect and builder. Their primary residence is in Windermere’s Keene’s Pointe where their neighbor happens to be custom builder Chris Morgan of Goehring & Morgan, so they asked for a recommendation of someone who worked in New Smyrna. “The name that kept coming up from him and others we asked was Charlie Clayton. We contacted him

Rick Caccavello, Central Kitchen & Bath, designed and installed the custom cabinets throughout the home. The backsplash in grays, greens and silvers is the exact color of the ocean in winter when the couple chose it.
The couple’s Windermere home is more traditional in a Mediterranean-Tuscan style and they knew they wanted a more contemporary design for the beach. “When my husband and I first met we were both working in the Middle East with PepsiCo. When we got engaged, I moved to Dubai where he was living. He had a beachfront property there that was very contemporary, so we had a dream of kind of recreating that house. It’s 24 years later and it’s a little bigger to accommodate our kids, but it was the inspiration — very modern and open looking out to the ocean through large windows across the back,” she explains. From the front of the house you don’t get a hint of what’s in store inside and that was by design. They wanted privacy from the street, but the back of the house is wide open with expansive views and a direct walkout to the sand and dunes. As for the interior, Susannah and her husband took on the challenge themselves and created a soothing coastal vibe with lots of neutrals and pops of color taken from the sea. “We loved doing the interiors. It was a great project. My husband was overseas a lot during the first 23 years of our marriage, but now is retired and home full time. My friends thought it was crazy for me to do it with him. But it worked out great and we had so much fun. We like to travel together now so we would pick up bits and pieces on our trips The striking art by PJ Svejda (Dominion, oil on canvas) spoke to the couple. The artist had it on display at her studio in Windermere where Susannah takes lessons. “I just fell in love with it. My husband was born and raised in Africa and this piece just spoke to me. It brings great color and meaning to the house,” she says.

In the master bedroom, an electric fireplace under the TV adds visual (and physical) warmth. The upholstered bed and wall — in a gray crocodile — were inspired by a Rock Star suite the couple stayed in while he was CEO of Hard Rock International.
The master bath also features cabinetry by Central Kitchen & Bath and a massive walk-through shower. The large window provides an ocean view while a shade adds some privacy and protection from light for nesting sea turtles.

Perfect for entertaining, the patio includes a summer kitchen and seating for casual meals outdoors.
The primary concern was comfort for their family and friends. “We still have some things to finish, but all the main rooms are done. We will continue to add things from our travels and need to buy artwork. It’s going to be an ongoing project. We have three kids who are grown. My eldest graduated college and is headed to Minneapolis for a job. My other daughter is in California and our son will start Rollins [College] this fall. We have a lot of friends and family overseas so they will be visiting, and we wanted to have room for the kids — and their friends — whenever they come,” she explains. The open downstairs living space keeps the flow casual with no formal rooms the homeowners knew they would not use. In addition to the kitchen, dining and family room, there is a gym, bathroom and study, and a wine room is next on their to-do list. One of Susannah’s favorite rooms is the one with the bunkbeds. “I love how it turned out. I thought when people came, they were all going to want the beach-facing room, but they all want to stay in the bunk room. Everyone wants to stay together. There are five beds — a queen, two fulls on the bottom and two twins on top,” she says. The entire project took less than two years, from buying the lot in 2016 to breaking ground in the summer of 2017 to welcoming guests in October 2018. “It was pretty fast actually considering it’s oceanfront and all the hoops you have to jump through. Charlie and his team were very easy to work with and we had a great experience,” Susannah says.

The famous line from TV reality show Project Runway goes: One day you’re in and the next day you’re out. As with fashion, home styles have certainly evolved at a much quicker pace in the last decade. That’s why the owners of this 2008 Mediterranean home in Lake Nona were looking for a remodel that better reflected their tastes and interests.
Special design features include a custom 10' x 5' pivot front door; a smoked glass mirror in the foyer; a custom backlit onyx wall in the living room; and a three-sided, floor-to-ceiling glassenclosed gas fireplace with quartz surround and leather panels above. “The process was a little challenging just because we started thinking we would be finished in a year and then it was a year and a half. If we had known the full scope from the beginning it would have gone a little faster. But that’s okay. The owners are really good at interior design, had seen some of our other houses, and really knew what they liked,” he concludes. And to top it all off, the home received the Grand Remodel Award in the 2019 Greater Orlando Builders Association Parade of Homes.

She was tasked with creating an appealing ambiance in the 4,983-square-foot Independence II model that features an additional living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, similar to a traditional
mother-in-law suite. “Lennar was one of the first to design these ‘Next Gen’ or
‘Multi-Gen’ homes. The floorplan is catered to a family with an elderly parent or a college student who is staying home or returning home. Another scenario these homes work well for are families with a live-in nanny or au pair. Of course, sometimes the separate area is used as a man-cave. You can access the area from the inside or outside of the house,” Anne says. To detail and furnish the home Anne created a family who would live there — in this case a younger, growing family with a grandparent living with them. “We decided there was a pre-teen girl and a young boy. There is also a guest bedroom,” she adds. Anne chose the bright colors to make a bold statement. “Everything is about memory point. There are many different builders in a community and these builders want their homes to

stand out. So, color is very important. We chose these hues because they are so relevant. Blue never goes out of style. Green will change in tone but is still pretty safe. And the yellow is just for fun,” she says. In order to make the big, open floor plan cozier and more intimate, instead of one cavernous space, Anne put in some architectural details to define the spaces. “We also wanted to distinguish the home from the one next door. We try to show potential buyers what they can do to make their home different,” she explains. One example of this is in the dining room where the wall has added

cerns. “When dealing with models, furniture has to be to scale with a nice traffic pattern. With an open layout people sometimes don’t know where to place the furnishings. We want it to feel open and airy,” Anne says. In addition to the challenge of such an open space, the timeline is quite tight and the budget is limited for decorating these model homes. “We usually only have about two to three weeks to design; then between 30 and 90 days to get everything done; and only a day and a half or two to complete the installation. We have to really prepare because something may come in damaged. It’s a whole different animal than doing a private home,” she explains.

have done homes around the country for this client — I think five previous residences with he and his wife. He is now a widower and called me about a year ago saying he would like to look for something in Winter Park. After months of not finding anything, the Realtor called with a property in mind. At first, I said no because it only checked one box — walking distance to Park Avenue. But I thought it couldn’t hurt to send it to him. He fell in love
with it after seeing it online,” Eric says. After finding the home, there was just one big challenge — how to make it more

his own stamp. Everything was new. We had decided not to tear apart any of the other residences for this project. I did go to one of his homes and cherry-pick about a half dozen items,” he says.

Although Eric had previously worked with the client at his local studio, he knew this project was different and would need some unusual and spectacular pieces. “We flew to New York and worked out of the D&D Building, going to all the flagship showrooms of many of the large companies. We found about a dozen of the principle pieces there that were all customized. The Serip lighting from Europe was the big find and all the upholstery was custom-made by Kravet Couture. They also designed the rugs in New York because Eric wanted to work with the actual looms that would be making them. Almost like watercolor paintings, the rugs enhance the spaces and add interesting dimension. The jumping off point for the color scheme was a neutral base color for the walls, cabinetry and larger furnishings. “But the client also wanted some pops of color. So, while in New York we landed on that painter’s palette fabric that’s on the four ottomans in the family room. And he said he loved every single color in the fabric,” Eric adds. And those pops, especially the coral-orange, are everywhere, including the courtyard. The floor plan worked perfectly for the client and no construction was necessary. “It was the right size — it’s by far the smallest house he has ever owned. His kids are grown and married and when they do visit, they want to be near the attractions. This home even had an elevator so he knew he could live here for as long as he wants,” he explains. “The lighting in the dining room is just magical. We had the chandelier custom made — from its scale to how many crystal globes and what finish it would have. I also play piano, so I love the living room as well. But the front guest bedroom is a favorite — that Romo wallpaper combined with the asparagus green bedding and chocolate-eggplant painted furniture. There’s a wonderful color sense in that room that everyone loves. It’s not the grandest or largest room but there’s something really beautiful about it. The outside space is also very special,” Eric concludes.

For a family with two young boys, this new custom build in College Park combined durability, openness and plenty of personal touches to create a space that reminded them of their favorite tropical locale. The homeowners worked with Andy Katzman of Rare Builders and Audrey Morrone of Morrone Interiors.

e were looking to go in an entirely
different direction from the more
traditionally styled home we had
lived in for the past seven years. My
husband is from Costa Rica and loves
being close to nature and living in very open, light, minimal spaces. When it came to the layout of this home, we wanted to try to recreate what we loved about the places we lived in Costa Rica. We wanted the rooms in our home to give us the feeling of being outside even when we were sitting in our living room watching television,” the homeowner explains. She had worked with Audrey on their

previous home and brought her in from the beginning of this project to work alongside the builder to execute their vision. “We wanted a lot of natural light, open spaces, and organic materials mixed with clean lines,” she adds. But the home also has a lot of personal touches, starting with the large collage wall in the entryway. “There’s a lot of grays, whites and creams in our designs — very monochromatic — so we wanted a huge pop of color and something that was visually interesting on that wall. The family is beautiful, and they love going to Costa Rica. We went through about 200 of their personal photos and then did a massive collage. It’s a statement piece but it’s also really personal to the family,” Audrey says. The collage wall leads the eye to the bright, white kitchen punctuated by a walnut waterfall bar and Regina Andrew pendant lights. The homeowners’ two sons were considered when designing the space with practical, durable quartz countertops, and barstools with backs that won’t easily tip over. The custom white cabinetry was

In the adjoining living area, Audrey explains: “We had our carpenter do the backdrop for the TV which is an oak wood wall detail. We did the window treatments to soften the whole room and add elegance.” Storage was another major consider-

Additional storage space was designed into the custom bench in the dining area, which also features a live edge dining table from Phillips Collection and upholstered wall by Bruce Ross Custom Upholstery. The two-story home includes a downstairs master suite as well as individual his and her office/personal spaces. Designed by the builder, a custom, powder-coated staircase leads to the loft playroom and the boys’ bedrooms. “When designing the boys’ bedrooms, we asked each of our kids to choose a place that was special to them as the theme for their room. One chose the town where his father is from in Costa Rica (we all go visit every year) and the other chose New York City. Audrey took their ideas and created the most incredible rooms that will grow with them for the next 10 years. In every aspect of this project, Morrone Interiors far exceeded all of our expectations and the final product really blew us away,” the homeowner shares. “This was a really fun project to do. It was easy because the builder was great and we had worked with the clients before,” Audrey adds.

The wallpaper is actually a photo from the town where we once lived, and every element of the design is based on something special we told Audrey about our visits there,” the homeowner shares. every year to visit friends (I used to live in Brooklyn), and he told me about how he loved the energy of the city and all of the tall buildings. He also loves visiting the Statue of Liberty so that became a part of the artwork,” she adds.

unexpected art The closest parking garage to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is the Orange County Administration Garage. It might be the last place you would expect to see art, but “Stairway to the Enchanted Castle” by Dorothy Gillespie is right in front of you as you drive in or out. Damaged by Hurricane Charlie, this mobile-style sculpture is comprised of hundreds of colorful, flower-like clusters hanging from a metal frame.
