MS. COLE
MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR As a past student of the Jo Daviess Carroll CTE Academy, I’m really excited to be back in the classroom as the Graphics Communications Instructor. In addition to having a Bachelors of Science in Computer Graphics and Interactive Media, I have over ten years of experience in the field as a Professional Wedding / Portrait Photographer (Orange Anchor Photography - www.orangeanchor.photo), and a Freelance Graphic Designer. The skills and education I acquired as a student of the Academy years ago were the stepping stones and confidence boost that I needed to build a successful, fulfilling career. My love for teaching began years ago when I organized and taught classes locally for area 4-H groups, as well as in Seattle, Washington where I was a guest speaker for various social groups, educating both children and adults on camera functions, color theory, and basic photoshop techniques — My hope and ultimate goal is to be that little nudge that motivates a young person’s aspirations and dreams. Besides an educator, photographer, designer, creative guru - WHO AM I? I’m a dog mom to Finn, cat mom to Kevin and Annie, and wifey to Shawn. (who you'll hear me talk about often!) I liked tacos before they were a thing, and am an advocate of afternoon naps. I love the outdoors and gearing up in my blaze orange every fall for Deer Hunting (you'll have a sub opening day, sorry) and I believe that getting your hands dirty is good for the soul.

There’s a whole world of photography possibilities about to open up to you. But you might be wondering exactly how best to go about getting the most from a DSLR Camera. Graphic Communications is here to help. Instructor Ms. Cole of Orange Anchor Photography has been snapping pics since she was a wee, starting with her Grandma's film Canon camera & then with a number of Nikon Digital SLR (DSLR) cameras when digital started to replace film. Ms. Cole has been shooting professionally since 2004 and is excited to share her tips and tricks mastered over the years and to help students get more out of their cameras.

ADOBE & MORE PHOTOSHOP Photoshop is an image creation, graphic design and photo editing software developed by Adobe. The software provides many image editing features for pixel-based images and raster graphics.
ILLUSTRATOR Adobe Illustrator is used to create a variety of digital and printed images, including cartoons, charts, diagrams, graphs, logos, and illustrations. Illustrator allows a user to import a photograph and use it as a guide to trace an object in the photograph.
Adobe is the industry standard for a reason. It is incredibly powerful, and offers a full suite of tools and features.

WEB DESIGN
WEB DESIGN As a web designer, you are responsible for big-picture decisions, like the menus listed on the site, and smaller details, like which font, color, and graphics to use. . In simple terms, a website designer makes a site look real good.
SOCIAL MEDIA Social media depends on great graphic design, which boosts engagement, improves user experience, and makes advertising more effective. Graphic designers need to understand how to work with social media, not just for their client work, but to promote themselves, find clients, network, and improve their skills.

MEDIUM
PAINT While there are plenty of options to choose from, there are several mediums that are popular with painters all over the world: acrylic, watercolor, oil, gouache, and ink. These five paint mediums are the most versatile and allow artists the greatest flexibility when trying to create a certain look or style.
FIBERS Fiber art refers to fine art whose material consists of natural or synthetic fiber and other components, such as fabric or yarn. It focuses on the materials and on the manual labor on the part of the artist as part of the works' significance, and prioritizes aesthetic value over utility.

Just make sure to clean up your art space or #madcole ensues.
VINYL There are two basic categories for vinyl : Adhesive vinyl that you would stick on things like mugs, windows or cars. And then there is HTV (also known as Iron-on Vinyl) that you use to heat press onto clothing or tote bags, or anything fabric.
+ MORE This class gives you the freedom to explore the art world. See something on TikTok you'd like to try? Inspired by an artist and want to create something of your very own? Love teaching others your methods of design? This is the place.

CTE / The sketchbook is the tool that every creative needs to give ideas a physical form. It doesn't matter if these ideas come from a specific project you are working on, or if they are flashes of inspiration that you didn't see coming and that you simply need to jot down somewhere safe.

Your participation in the form of questions, comments and feedback is invited, expected, and appreciated. Note: there truly are no stupid questions. If you have a question, please ask it. In fact, you are not allowed to keep yourself from asking questions or making comments based on the assumption that you will sound a) stupid or uneducated, b) obvious, or c) lame. Mutual respect is an expectation of everyone involved in the class. Respect is demonstrated through active listening when others are talking, thinking before speaking, and sharing comments based on fact rather than opinion. Students will contribute to their own learning and that of their classmates through peer discussions and interactions. NO MONITORS ON DURING STUDENT PRESENTATIONS. While respect is at the core of classroom discussion, realize that it is entirely appropriate to discuss, disagree, and challenge myself and each other. In fact, this challenge is encouraged, provided it is not abusive, disrespectful, or dismissive, as this dialogue is imperative to learning. Humor will be used often and is a valuable educational tool, as well as life skill.

CLASS RULES
DON'T BE A SLOB
Students are expected to have respect for the classroom and supplies. DO NOT BE WASTEFUL. Clean up after yourself (Ms. Cole isn't your Mama) -- Paint brushes and pallets must be rinsed and put away after each use, wipe down sink and art table, check floor for messes or scraps, etc. Get something out, put it back where you found it when you're done.
KEEP OUT
Do not rummage through Ms. Cole's or your classmates spaces (cabinets behind the instructors desk are off limits) & HANDS OFF OF ARTWORK THAT YOU DID NOT CREATE! THIS INCLUDES SNOOPING AROUND IN CLASSMATES FOLDERS ON THE Z DRIVE. I will not tolerate stealing or sabotaging in my classroom!
CELL PHONE POLICY
Students are expected to have their cell phones silenced at the start of each class session. Cell phones serve as a useful tool in society, but can often be a distraction to the learning process. There will be limited times that students are allowed to use their phones for music, research, etc., but this will be clearly stated at that time.
ASSIGNMENTS AND LATE WORK POLICY
For every day that an assignment is late, 5 points will be taken off.
LATE WORK FOR QUARTER PROJECTS AND/OR FINALS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. It is the students responsibility to communicate if their work will be late and when it will be turned in. The instructor may issue reminders, but ultimately it is the students responsibility to listen in class, read the calendar, and keep track of their responsibilities. Students are expected to make arrangements in advance if they know they will be absent when an assignment, project, or final is due.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.) in class and/or on assigned work will result in total loss of credit for the class or assignment. Dishonesty in general is frowned upon. This class wants to see and hear your own unique ideas.
