range Appeal is back, and in some ways resurrected. After a long not-so-purposeful hiatus, we are back and ready to share once again the glossy written word. This revival issue revolves around Orange County, and the pulling back of the “orange curtain.” Each article displays a deeper look into our community and sheds new light on current topics connecting the OC and the current societal climate.

Another of our features revolves around breastfeeding and the oversexualization of the female body. With the conversation surrounding public breastfeeding it was important to illuminate the hypocrisy of breast shaming.

Some have asked, why make a magazine? The discussions regarding the death of print don’t intimidate us and we believe there is still a thriving market for magazines. So we present to you our 2016 spring issue, we hope you love it as much as we do.

By Jalen Hall Once you turn 18 you are legally an adult, but older adults can help. There are some things that another adult may know that you don’t. The typical young adult would probably be able to help you with more tech-savy based questions, while the much older adult will be able to 4 • Orange Appeal • March 2016

help you with things such as: changing a tire, how to check your oil or even telling you what a 401k is. Since it is tax season many young adults like myself are starting to file their taxes and need help.

One adult who will be able to help answer some of those questions is Sue Chen, a senior tax adviser, at H&R Block Turbo Tax.

What is a 401k?

It is a retirement savings plan sponsored by an employer. It basically lets workers save and invest a piece of their paycheck before taxes get taken out.

How does it help me?

Based on your income and filing status, your contributions to your 401k may lower your tax bill.

How many can I have?

There’s no legal limit number of 401k’s you have at one time, but you can only contribute new money to the plan of current employer.

What or who is a 401k plan sponsor?

Generally the employer, who sets up and oversees your 401k.

By Julia Cheng Think back to your senior year, the excitement and anticipation of graduation is palpable by spring. Nearing the end of a high school everyone makes plans for what’s next, but first comes prom. Senior prom is touted as a rite of passage. Celebrating the culmination of the end and many years of public education with a grand dance party. Yet between tickets, clothes, photos, and a limo how can a family living paycheck to paycheck afford such an extravagant expense?

The nonprofit organization Prom Project founded by Jaehee Kim, Angie Kim, and Diane Masseth-Jones in 2007, has a solution.

The organization donates hundreds of free prom dresses, shoes, accessories, and more to low income high school seniors in north Orange County each year.

“While money is a huge issue, a project is nothing without people being actually there and helping,” says Barbara Brooks, a new volunteer to Prom Project who collects dresses.

Brooks also emphasizes the need for dresses in plus sizes, makeup artists, and tailors.

Boutique Day, which takes place March 19 at the United Methodist Church of Fullerton, is the annual event where about 200 young women can choose a dress, shoes, and accessories, as well as makeup and hair advice. By giving these young women a day of beauty, it “makes them feel like a princess” says Masseth-Jones.

Masseth-Jones explains that YWCA empowers women, by providing positive experiences. Prom Project and the YWCA believes that by giving these young women the opportunity to celebrate the completion of their high school career in style is thereby “promoting self-confidence and individual beauty” according to Masseth-Jones.

On Friday February 19, 2016, pop singer Kesha fought her case against Sony music producer, Dr. Luke, who is accused of drugging and raping the pop singer, according to the Washington Post. The New York Supreme Court denied Kesha a preliminary injunction that would have allowed her to go outside of her contract to record songs until the case is finalized, but this does not extinguish all hope.

Thousands of people have supported Kesha using the hashtag #FreeKesha.

STDs on Tinder

The mobile dating app Tinder is adding a health safety section to the app that includes a link to free HIV and sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing centers, according to the OC

Register. This health addition satisfies public health advocates who relate the spike in STDs to the rise of dating or hook-up sites, like Tinder, Grindr, and Match.

The Bagel Store, a bagel shop in Brooklyn, New York, is home to the world’s most beautiful bagel, according to YouTube channel “60 Seconds Smarter.” For the past 20 years, store owner Scot Rossillo dyed the bagel dough using neon rainbow colors and topped it off with funfetti cream cheese and sprinkles.

The nearest residential street to the small trail that leads to the caves is Alpine Way, and from there you’ll see a small path next to the Elementary school’s playground fences.

Make your way to the path along the fences and continue to follow the coordinates that will take you further down the slanted hillside. Then look over into the canyon on the left side for any hints of the cave opening.

Food malls are on the rise, and at the top of the chain is the historically beautiful Anaheim Packing House.

The district is in the heart of Anaheim’s historic downtown and is just minutes away from Disneyland. The food mall is packed away in an old 1919 Spanish orange marmalade plant. The Anaheim Packing House is now a local destination for not only dining experiences but nightlife. This up and coming food mall was once a place where local farmers prepped fresh citrus into wooden crates for shipping all across the United States. Today the newly renovated location celebrates the dense agricultural history of Orange County by exhibiting almost 24 culinary or boutique artisans.

These skilled restaurateurs range from butcheries, bakeries, sandwich shops, Vietnamese food, fresh and fried seafood, Indian cuisine, pizzeria, and a coffee shop. Through all the madness you can sit and rest in a group dining hall that wraps around the outside covered porches, deck, and bar.

In this public market-type setting (think of a more “indie” Ferry Plaza) there are multiple restaurants you can visit— Hans for ice cream, Cafecito Organico for small batch roasted coffee, or Crepe Coop for your own signature crepe.

After picking your food(s) of choice, venture downstairs to the communal dining hall or head outside to the Farmers Park, which is an all-green lawn marketplace.

Farmers Park is also home to tons of community activities such as movies nights, concerts, and a Certified Farmers Market almost every Sunday. Towards the back of the

packing district located just outside Ecco’s Pizzeria comes a home-style backyard patio with a heated seating area that includes a fireplace to warm up chilly nights, and it features plenty of seating for just having a drink or hanging out.

Shaheen Sadeghi, the mastermind behind the packing house and other alternate non-malls such as the Costa Mesa LAB. “Our passion is about small operators. It’s about personalization, not homogenization,” says Sadeghi.

He says the idea of the Anaheim Packing District came from beautiful marketplaces all over the world. The district has a certain vintage-hipster feel, the perfect backdrop for Instagram and Yelp pictures.

Although many eateries have in-house seating, the Packing District offers what they call “communal dining,” a dining area in front of the stage which hosts numerous live performances, most of them involving musical acts.

ome of the more popular eateries include Popbar (gelato on a stick), The Koft (New American), Ecco Pizzeria and Hans Ice Cream.

At Han’s the ice cream is made fresh daily, transported from the Santa Ana location.

The milk and cream comes from Scott Brothers Dairy in Chino, with locations in Santa Ana and Anaheim.

“We never whip air into our ice cream to fluff up the volume, so all you get is dense, creamy ice cream that you can really sink your teeth into!” according to Hanshomemade. com.

Single scoops are $3.50 and doubles $5. Signature flavors from the new owners include Oreo coffee and salted caramel. They often add sherbet flavors during the summer season.

Customers often say the same thing.

“I enjoy Hans because you can tell the quality of cream used, and how fresh and innovative the flavors are” says college student Anjelique Arabshahi.

Fan favorite Popbar is always the most crowded at the Packing District. Although simple in concept, customers wrap around the building with salivating mouths and a look of anxiety and desperation in their eyes. Reuben BenJehuda co-founder of Popbar says “The younger crowd is mesmerized by our display, the older crowd thinks of us as something nostalgic...Popbar’s treats appeal to all ages, genders, and income levels so we have a variety of customers. Locals, tourists, adults, and children...everyone enjoys visiting Popbar!”

Popbar appeals to the younger customer in particular with social media platforms the company says, “We are extremely active on social media and have a large following on Instagram (@ popbar) and Facebook (@popbarUSA). We post everything from followers’ photos of their customized Popbars to promotions and coupons. At the same time, our fans, also known as Popaholics, post photos of their creations to their own pages. Many end up receiving large amount of likes which then generate more followers of our social media pages and brand.”

BenJehuda says, not only does the Packing District strive to provide a fun atmosphere but Popbars mission “is to give visitors a fun and unique experience which allows them to customize their Popbars their way with our chocolate dippings and various Poppings.” So whether you’re looking to eat breakfast or dessert the Anaheim Packing District is your destination for every social gathering.

Scott Hays speaks on producing the new PBS public affairs program Inside OC and his love for writing and teaching

As a producer, Hays is involved in just about everything happening around him, and somehow he remains calm and remains collected, going with the flow.

Getting cozy in the middle of two technicians on a Tuesday morning taping, Inside OC begins at the OC Register Studio and the teleprompter rolls.

“We’ve got this new show Inside OC that is airing on PBS SoCal seven times a week,” says Hays. “We also just got a commitment from Cox that it will air from San Diego all the way to Palace Verdes six or seven times a week.”

From radio to video to being an instructor here at Saddleback College, Scott Hays is doing what he loves and expressing himself through all his various media.

“The one thing I’m really into right now is recording songs and writing songs,” Hays says.

Hays just finished a song about the California lifestyle writing both the music and lyrics. Three months ago he got his show Inside OC up and running. He also used to freelance for publications such as Los Angeles Times and Men’s Fitness.

It all began with attending the community college Orange Coast College, where he received his associate degree.

He later transfered to Chico State re-

tioned into teaching. Saddleback College was the first place that hired him with zero experience. Before he knew it, Hays fell in love with teaching.

“Teaching was a whim, I’ve been teaching since 2001,” Hays says. “I just saw a couple other writers that I knew were teaching part-time and I knew I had the degrees to do it.”

Hays comes from a family of teachers. His father and two older brothers are teachers as well.

“What I love about [teaching] I think is just the energy,” Hays says. “And the dynamics that occur in a classroom” With all his experience gained as a journalist, Hays was approached to be a consultant for many different types of companies consisting of entirely media related jobs.

“That’s sort of how I fell into the consulting business the video stuff,” Hays says. “I started in 2007 and I ran into a guy named Dave Holland McMahon who was a homeless guy in La-

guna and I befriended him. I’d walk downtown and go sit in the alley on the ground with him and his guitar. He’d play me some of his songs.”

That inspired him to make a video for the Friendship Shelter called “Shelter Me,” which was a benefit CD with songs on it about the issue of homelessness. Hays also created a video documentary about it as well.

“That was just an incredible experience,” Hays says. “Probably one of my top professional experiences and I made zero money.”

It wasn’t about the money to Hays but about the creativity and purpose behind the project, which was really inspiring.

Two years ago, Hays got involved in radio when someone came to him asking to be the first guest on new radio station in Laguna. Hays came on as the second guest later being asked to co-host radio program.

During his interviews, he began film-

ing himself curious as to what it would look like, and he started doing several 30-minute shows getting Cox Cable to agree to air. The radio station owner wanted to own the content, though, but Hays said no and stopped doing the radio show.

“I just thought it would be interesting,” Hays says. “To see what I looked like conducting interviews in a radio station.”

Today, Hays is creatively tapped into writing music and creating lyrics. For Inside OC, he’s also working on a story about a new Orange County task force called the Orange County Homicide Task Force, which just started about a year ago, for .

“Everything I’m doing I’m enjoying,” Hays says. “I love teaching for the reasons I expressed. I love doing the radio/TV stuff that I’m doing. I’m digging the music a lot. And that’s my lifestyle so there’s nothing that I’m working on that I don’t enjoy.” www.orangeappeal.org • 9

Ramblings from the hiv clinic

he waiting room was small, smaller than I had expected anyway. It had taken me 6 and a half minutes to approach the building, I was barely able to step out of the car. I had never gotten an HIV test before and the concept of going seemed more sinister than any other nightmare I could dream up.

As if, as long as I didn’t go, and as long as it was just a concept that I kept my distance from, there could be no way I had HIV. I had gone with my two friends Austin and Angel, all three of us young gay men who had only applied AIDS to situations like the mass outbreak in the 1980s and the classic Jonathan Larson musical, Rent. Admittedly, I was the only one who had actually seen Rent but I happily provided the entire synopsis on our ride there.

All of us were nervous, but being the more expressive one out of the trio, I ended up having what my friends would later refer to as an ‘HIV-related tantrum.’

“Adam, we just drove twenty minutes to get here, you need to get up.

Everything will be okay I promise.”

Angel’s usually indifferent tone had become stern, and I looked up at him from the parking block I had impulsively sat on, and responded “fiiiiiiinnnneeeeee.”

We walked around aimlessly searching for the right address, the clinic was situated in a mass of industrial buildings across from John Wayne Airport, each one just as similar as the next.

Taupe, taupe, and you guessed it--more taupe. We had found the clinic via yelp, and found it was the only place near us that did not only do anonymous and free testing, but also gave you your results within twenty minutes. That was the only option for me, if I had to wait a week to get my results, by the time they came back my insides would have already rotted from nerves.

When I get nervous, I ramble, which although not especially uncommon was especially annoying (so I’ve been told).

The more we walked, the more I felt pressed up against the very real possibility I could have something. So therefore, the more we searched the more I rambled about anything that popped into my head. I felt charged with nervous energy, at this point I just wanted to get the whole ordeal over with, I walked ahead of my friends, looking around manically like a parent who loses their kid at Target. Through the mighty power of google maps, we finally found ourselves face to face with the right door, and it occurred to me then that I might leave here a completely different person than when I came in.

I entered speedily and kept my head

held high, not allowing myself to feel any shame that is usually associated with getting an STD test. Inside was a large empty room where a blank faced receptionist sat, looking bored and uninterested.

“I am here to get an HIV test,” I proclaimed, probably louder than necessary, and to boot the almost-vacant room had caused my words to echo.

“Wrong room, they’re in the building behind us.”

I swallowed hard, gave the receptionist a hard grin and a polite nod, and left just as quickly as I had entered, ignoring the chuckles of Austin and Angel behind me. I didn’t really care, my anxiety had washed away any feeling of embarrassment, sometimes you just don’t have room to feel anything else.

The small waiting room felt as compact as it looked, with chairs lining against the wall, giving the impression that they were trying to stuff as many seats as practically possible. The three of us sat side by side, avoiding eye contact with the other two men who had already been waiting. One was a skinny guy, couldn’t be older than his mid-twenties, dressed effeminately, and I remember thinking at the time that when conservatives think of gay people this is the stock photo that probably enters their head. The other was a complete polarity to the skinny guy, a man

in business wear, his tie was loosened, I would guess somewhere in his mid to late forties. He looked tense, even more than I, he kept his face in his hands and I felt badly for him, enough to where I almost forgot my own reason for being here.

The cream colored walls left me feeling more tense, and so I kept intimate eye contact with the white ribbed carpet as I filled out the information sheet. There was a side table before the very first chair, which had a bowl of condoms and lube, a stack of brown lunch bags in case you wanted to take home a goodie bag, and a rack of pamphlets with sayings like “You Have HIV, What Next?” and with pictures of couples looking distressed on the front.

Eventually the person doing the test came out of the examination room, a younger guy, dressed aesthetically like an extremely cute gay librarian.

“Who is next?” He was cute, like weirdly cute for a volunteer at an HIV clinic, and really the last thing I needed at this specific low-point was to be around a cute person.

“Me,” I said instinctively, I needed the agony to be over, I turned to my friends and they both gave me a reassuring smile, and so I went in.

It was quick, a simple swab test, I sat and the cute guy asked me questions about myself and I talked and talked

and Angel, and we all wait together for our results which he pulls us in one by one for.

“Your tests came back clean!” It felt like I could breathe again, colors were brighter, this guy was now even cuter, and I felt safe. My body felt like mine again. It’s a scary feeling being young and thinking something so traumatic has already happened to your body. It’s such a loss of control, and it’s a brush with mortality that no one at seventeen should have to bear.

I was right about one thing, I did leave a different person. I had one of those ah-ha moments that you only have after the storm has cleared. It was one of my first real grown up situations, my mom was not there to coddle me and ask the doctor questions, this was on me.

My safety and my responsibility to myself and my body is on me.

Getting tested is scary, but the not knowing is worse.

The three of us drove back home, we laughed, listened to music, and all silently thanked whatever higher power there was for giving us a little more time with the illusion of immortality.

“I am here to get an HIV test” I proclaimed, probably louder than necessary. and talked. Between every 300 words I added“sorry I’m nervous, that’s why I keep talking” and then proceeded on with my explanation on what life is like with an untraditional body type.

The New Addiction America chomps the most popular psychiatric drug, Xanax, like Pac-Man chomps pac-dots

T

he use of xanax, a real life “chill pill” doctors prescribe to help remedy diseases such as anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and withdrawals from other drugs, is on the rise in Orange County.

Its clinical name is Alprazolam and comes in a wide variety of shapes, colors, and dosages. Classified as a benzodiazepine, it affects a person’s neurotransmitters in a way that helps to sedate, lower anxiety, and relax the muscles.

The Xanax pill may sound like a miracle to those diagnosed with these certain symptoms, which could explain a 2009 report stating that 47.9 million Americans were prescribed Xanax, making it the most popular psychiatric drug according to IMS Health.

However, people prescribed Xanax aren’t the only ones consuming the drug. Like many prescription pills, they end up being sold on the streets for an inflated price to users unable to ac-

quire their own personal prescriptions.

The increase in the pill’s popularity has made it easier to find, and Orange County is home to broad selection of doctors willing to hand the pills out like candy and sign off on prescriptions with the flick of their pen.

A former Saddleback College student, William, who asked to have his name remain confidential since he makes money dealing Xanax or “bars”, as he calls them, shares a few Kennedy words about his views on the drug and its effect on people.

“I first took them because I would have really vivid nightmares and wake up in a panic,” says William as he sits in a blue-striped love seat, pushed into

the corner of his room with disheveled clothes spread around his feet.

“My friend offered them to me saying that they’d help and it turns out he was right. No more nightmares and whenever I felt anxious, I’d just pop one and problem solved.”

“Fuck yeah, I notice an increase [in people requesting Xanax].” says William, slightly laughing which causes him to choke a bit on his water and place his cup back on the table.

He claims people always call or text him asking if he’s available. “I feel bad sometimes because I notice that some of the kids grow desperate for it,” says William. “It’s like, not fun anymore to them, it becomes a type of necessity.” He doesn’t get too sentimental over the fact though, and says he’d probably sell more of them if he didn’t consume large amounts of Xanax himself.

Clinical trials list the drug as being a safe pharmaceutical, but researchers are still cautious due to risks of misuse for non-medical purposes. Researchers also noticed users had a much higher dependence on the drug. Another recent worry occurred when reports be-

gan streaming from all over the nation about “fake Xanax” being sold on the streets that carries a fatal dose of the narcotic Fentanyl in them, resulting in a handful of deaths.

In a recent report published by the Orange County Health Care Agency, it noted, “Unintentional deaths, primarily drug overdose, was the third leading cause of premature death,” and in 2011, 123,000 people nationally were taken to emergency rooms thanks to Xanax.

“Yes, Xanax is dangerous…the body builds a tolerance therefore to feel it, you need to take more and more. Plus, there’s times when a person forgets they even took Xanax and then they take some more,” says Michael, another non-prescribed user who requested to have his name remain confidential.

Michael says Xanax appealed to him because of the particular numbing feeling it had over him and his first time taking the drug was seven years ago when he was in the sixth grade.

“Absolutely. It’s my drug of choice,” says Michael, agreeing about the addictive nature of the drug.

At the other end of the spectrum, people consume the prescribed dosage of Xanax and claim it can work miracles for them. The main problem with the drug, however, is that the pills are produced faster than people can ingest them and they’re acquired by people who abuse them. Research done by OCHCA says a majority of people given prescriptions tend to be older adults, but those abusing the drug and eventually hospitalized, are generally in their early 20s.

Amy Levey, a mother of two, says she was given a prescription for Xanax about two years ago as she went through treatment for cancer. Xanax

doesn’t help deter cancer cells in any way, but she says it helped her with the anxiety and stress involved in fighting the disease. “It worked greatly,” she says, but unlike the misusers, she’s never felt addicted to it.

“No, it’s a terrible drug, I’d hate to be addicted to it,” says Levey.

Though it helped with some of her problems, Levey realized the negative side effects such as dizziness, lethargy, dependence, and loss of memory far outweigh the benefits. When mixed with alcohol, Xanax can have some very dangerous effects, like temporary blackouts. It also can slow a person’s breathing and heart rate to a sometimes fatal level. People who become dependent or addicted to the drug also tend to experience severe withdrawals when they stop taking it, which is ironic since the drug is sometimes provided in low dosages to patients going through withdrawals from other substances.

Kennedy, who was recently released from rehab for her Xanax addiction recalls her withdrawals as being “one of the worst experiences” she’s ever had to go through.

“I’d wake up in cold sweats that drenched my bed, and painful cramps throughout my whole body. My mind was all over the place, one minute I’d be happy and the next I’m depressed and locked away in my room. I felt

like I turned myself into some type of crazy lady.” When she was asked if her love for the pill was worth it in the end, without hesitation she says, “No…not at all now that I’m able to look back on it. It was like every pain and feeling I numbed with Xanax hit me all at once the moment I stopped taking it”.

Kennedy says that in the peak of her addiction, she would eat about 15 milligrams, which is more than quadruple the usual suggested dosage. Her body’s tolerance allowed her to still remain conscious after taking that amount, but she admits that she didn’t function very well.

Surprisingly, if Xanax is ingested by itself and without any other substance, especially alcohol, it’s fairly difficult to overdose. People are reported to surviving after ingesting 1,000 milligrams of Xanax, which is seemingly impossible. The reason that so many Orange County residents, especially the younger generation ending up in emergency rooms from the drug, is because either they took some other substance along with Xanax, or their body simply hasn’t built up the tolerance for such large doses.

Xanax is hailed as a miracle worker by some and denounced by others.

Every user will react differently to it, such as Levey, who claims it works but still thinks it’s a terrible drug, or Michael, who recognized the dangers of it but still lists it as his number one drug of choice.

The only undeniable fact about Xanax, is that it does an effective job at eliminating anxiety. But that should not be an excuse allowing it to become Orange County’s new drug of choice and effortlessly easy to obtain from a pharmacist or a street dealer. www.orangeappeal.org • 13

Progress within the queer community being halted by a false sense of equality.

or straight and gay people alike, many would describe the legalization of gay marriage this past summer as a triumph.

Instagram feeds filled with rainbow flags and long impassioned captions describing what this judicial decision meant for the country as a whole.

Sadly, with the rainbow-colored sweet comes the rainbow-colored sour. Once this landmark decision had been reached, I noticed LGBT allies looking around the room with a self-assured smile, patting each other on the back. “Well, we did it!” they all thought. “The fight is over! Time to pack it up, good job everyone.”

Other cis-queer people did it too, for them this was the big bad that needed to be conquered and now we had won, so what other issues are there?

This is where the sour comes in: once marriage equality became the law of the land a giant smokescreen appeared in front of the other issues queer people face. “The marriage equality movement, that great red herring of equality”, as stated by Aaron Talley, a culture writer for Mused Magazine.

This past year was the most dangerous on record for black trans women and gender nonconforming people.

The numbers of murdered trans folks added up to about 25 people around the country. This gets even more disheartening when you take into account the cases that were either not investigated or the victims that were misgendered by their families and local authorities.

This information doesn’t make national news, and doesn’t commonly elicit outcries from the same groups marching for marriage equality.

To be clear, I am not comparing the two in importance, but noting the extreme difference in attention. Further14 • Orange Appeal • March 2016

more when you put it into context with the other issues queer people face, it comes nowhere close to the top of the priority list. On average, 34 percent of black transgender people live under the poverty line according to the `National Center of Transgender Equality. Almost 50 percent of trans people of color have considered or attempted suicide. The disparity list goes on and on. I haven’t even touched on healthcare, homelessness, or the staggering HIV rates. Gay marriage is great, but it gives little help to the masses and benefits predominantly the white upper middle class queer person.

“The biggest hypocrisy I’ve seen

The community are all to some extent going through struggles with the perceptions of gender and sexuaity, but in the end we are not fighting the same battles. among members within the community is the insensitivity among trans issues, specifically among cis white gay men usually”, says Andrea Arriaga, a gender-fluid queer woman and current IVC student. “There is a lot of discourse regarding the issues with being queer, but I feel it’s important to observe when race and gender intersect.”

When the film Stonewall was released this last September, its purpose was to capture the true story about the ‘stonewall riots’. Which was a violent clash between the police and the catalyst for the gay liberation movement.

These riots were led primarily by trans women of color, with Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera at the forefront.

Yet, when the film was released, this crucial event in queer history had become a gay white man’s fable. The film depicted primarily cisgendered white gay men as the acting leaders of the stonewall riots, erasing not only Johnson and Rivera but all of the trans women who fought and symbolized the inception of queer liberation.

This is a prime example of the issues that arise when trans and gender nonconforming people become coupled in with gay people to create the ‘LGBT’ community. Although there is strength in numbers and it is perfectly fine for gay and trans people to mutually help each other, the two do not always meld in a beneficial way. Even the way we say ‘gay community’ can bring up some issues of over generalization.

The community are all to some extent going through struggles with the perceptions of gender and sexuaity, but in the end we are not fighting the same battles.

The rights that each other are fighting for are nowhere close to the same. If we are asking to be put in the same community we must not only highlight the difference between each others struggles, but also to keep in mind that we have always been separate entities. This doesn’t mean we can’t still support each other.

It is the job of the allies and of cis-queer folk to not make excuses for our ignorance and to understand matters beyond our own experiences. We need to help them, stand by them, and understand them. Ask questions, get informed, and through that it will strengthen the community. We won a huge fight this past summer, and now we have countless ones to go, but we have each other and that’s a good place to start.

If you want the real deal just drink water. Cue the gasps of shock. Dehydrated skin isn’t dry skin’s offspring.

Putting globs of day and night cream on dry skin only helps deplete the moisture. To these companies every day is happy “April Fool’s Day,” suckers!

Laughing, all the way to the bank with your money in their pockets.

Sitting around all dry skinned and itchy-scratchy ain’t good either. But putting hope into some science foes hands is far from what you need, again just drink water.

Analyzing potential hydrogen (pH) of blood plasma levels could explain the negative effects of nutrient absorption, causing illness. When the pH range moves away from healthy levels the body’s natural response is to make every attempt to return back to a natural state.

Potential Hydrogen (pH) is a rating system that measures the acidity or alkalinity of blood plasma. It’s numbered on a scale with a potential value ranging from 0 to 14 with 7 representing neutrality. A scale range of 0 represents acidity while fourteen represent alkalinity. Each unit number on the range represents a tenfold change in acidity or alkalinity.

The ideal range of drinking water

resides at a neutral level of 7.0. Waters condensation is determined by the amount of salt content as well as temperature. “By adding a pinch of salt and squeeze of lemon juice to plain tap water will help to increase hydration. Increasing waters sodium level will result in a slight increase in alkalinity,” says Matt Dixon, hydration expert.

Acid alkaline balance is as important to the body as the regulation of the body’s temperature. “The key to hydration is stationary with availability; it’s a big part of the job. People will drink whatever is most closely available.

So having water near is a far better option than dialing emergency during an athletic performance,” says Professor Mc Reynolds of Saddleback College, who explains to students what they should be drinking. He says that muscle cramping is a sign of dehydration, and that proper hydration makes the body work efficiently.

sually when we are out and about, whether it be shopping or going for a walk, it is typical that we get hungry and just maybe be close to one local Mexican restaurant or next to a really good vegan bakery, we all know it’s just a lot more convenient to dine out. It’s easier and most of the time quicker. Babies need to be fed every 2-3 hours, and locations may vary, but a mother will stop wherever and whenever to make sure their child gets fed, and many will agree they would prefer their shopping experience isn’t interrupted by the uncontrollable screams of a child. When it comes time to raising awareness for breast cancer it seems as if there is complete unity. However,

when the idea of a woman nursing her child in public is brought up the amount of negativity it receives is astounding.

But the absurdity doesn’t stop there, in a poll done by Medical News Today, they stated that 41% of women are not on board for public breastfeeding.

This statistic shows how women have a difficult time accepting the issue.

There is a strong community when it comes to defending the rights of those who breastfeed. Countless people stand behind every mother’s right to decide because it comes with many benefits; physical, emotional, and financial. It is said infants who are breastfed have lower rates of being hospitalized and are less likely to get all the other health problems caused by the generic infant formulas, such as ear infections, diarrhea, and

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

This is due to the infant immune systems benefiting from the nutrients provided by natural breast milk.

Over the years the female body has always been sexualized and simple tasks like breastfeeding is shamed.

“It is illegal for women to go topless in most cities, yet you can buy a magazine of a woman without her top on at any 7-11 store. So, you can sell breasts, but you cannot wear breasts, in America.” says Violet Rose, an author and feminist commentator.

Joey Salads, known mostly for his social experiments, posted a video online showing a mother sitting outside the mall on a bench, breastfeeding her baby. Throughout the video the mother is given dirty looks and is told by a

woman walking out of the store, with a disgusted look on her face, “Eww that is so gross.” The only person who appeared to want to sit with her, was a pregnant woman who asked the mom questions about her breastfeeding experience.

“You know it’s crazy that something as humanly natural as this can be shamed. Women are the reason we are here, they nurtured us for many years and men all of a sudden feel like they are entitled to disrespect one, but it’s not only men it’s women too and that’s the sad part. I believe it was important for me to create this video to raise awareness to such a powerful topic,” Salads says.

Then another woman was sent out to sit in the same bench, and this woman was a totally different story. She wasn’t breastfeeding, she just sat there in a low cut shirt clearly exposing the same amount of cleavage the mom did.

This women received smiles, smirks, and was even approached by a man who asked for her social media names.

The idea “sex sells” seems to be the exception and justification given when it comes to women being put on display; in Victoria’s Secret Campaigns, beer commercials, and the infamous male gazed Carl’s Jr. ads.

“I had no idea what a culture of shame had been created around breastfeeding until I had my second daughter.

What is the alternative? Total isolation as our children need to eat every 2-3

hours,” says Jacqueline Raw, a mother of two.

Salads isn’t the only person who was struck by the topic. The news and social activism site, attn.com, created a video, in which many facts and videos are combined together to illustrate how women are attacked on a daily basis for something as essential as breathing.

“If a law banning women from exposing their breasts didn’t go through, I should have a free pass to grab their nipples and that includes women who were breastfeeding out in public,” says misogynist New Hampshire Rep. Josh Moore, a so-called “pro-family” man.

“The very least you can do, is protect a mother’s right to feed her child,” says New Hampshire Rep. Amanda Bouldin, in response to Moore. In New Hampshire it is currently legal for both genders to be topless, the proposed bill would make it punishable for a women to show her nipple and would classify it as Indecent Exposure.This legislation action was a response to the “Free the Nipple” campaign. Bouldin plans to fight the bill in 2016 to create a safe and equal standing ground for all women.

But the problem doesn’t end with men, as shown by the woman who was cruel to the breastfeeding mother on the mall bench in Salad’s video, there is also a lack of support from the female community. As odd as it may sound, breastfeeding in public is not supported by all women and their reasoning behind it is unfounded and due to internalized misogyny.

Although when I tried to speak to

women who felt strongly against public breastfeeding, nobody wanted to talk to me about the topic or even give me a quote out of fear of criticism. Upon researching why women think it’s wrong to breastfeed in public I discovered many feel it’s very uncomfortable to be put in awkward social interactions. One of the facts was that women are more likely to confront other women who are publically breastfeeding, according to a recent poll done by PSA.Gov. Meaning there are women out there who find it to be disturbing to have to see a female baring some skin even though they share the same body parts acting as if it was something they’ve never seen before.

Women already face enough discrimination and inequality. It seems as if the feminism trend has hit hard this year with goals of reaching higher places there’s no stopping it. If we can not all come together for something as simple as breastfeeding, then we’re in for quite a future. If we can’t reach a compromise, we might never reach social and gender equality.

The amount of hypocrisy is overwhelming. It’s unfair that women can wear low cut shirts and be objectified, yet when a mother does something completely natural she is disrespected and harmed. Having to conform to society a mother must feed their baby in a secluded area, even sometimes forcing the baby wait in agonizing hunger.

Deadpool in a suit that’s not green or animated.

Chimichangas take on the generic demon infested doll, and emo music still survives in todays scene

This is not your typical superhero movie. Deadpool is funny, raunchy, and straight up badass. Filled with all the spandex you can handle. To start off the beginning credits were the perfect hook, they were enjoyable and extremely clever.

later finds out he has cancer in his liver, lungs, brain and prostate which is a total vibe kill. He is recruited by Ajax and is given the opportunity to become a super hero, meaning it would cure his cancer cells. Wade having to leave his girlfriend behind undergoes the treatment.

After many months of excruciating pain, Wade’s body is completely transformed and not in all the best ways.

Although his cancer cells have been destroyed it has ruined his physical appearance. Crushing all possibilities of him ever having his normal life back.

With the help of Colossus (Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Hildebrand) deadpool is on the hunt for Ajax to make him pay for ruining his life.

Deadpool was definitely up to hype; it delivered exactly what it promised. It also stuck to its R rating, meaning nonstop dirty jokes that will bring out anybody’s inner 12 year-olds immature pre teen boy, and of course the totally kick ass gruesome violence scenes.

A film so original that it broke the

fourth wall, with a comedy like this it maybe a challenge but Deadpool interacted with the audience as if we were all in it together. Giving comic book movies a totally different meaning. It’s everything you want from two of the hardest pleasing genres comedy and action. What really ties this film together is the freedom Reynolds put into it, he portrayed his character right to the tee and the script wasn’t afraid to offend anybody. Deadpool is a super-villain dressed like a super hero.

The Boy

Lauren Cohan, Rupert Evans Rated PG-13, 97 minutes, Horror

The Boy was just like any other story of the creepy doll that moves but we don’t have enough evidence to blame them without looking completely psycho. We’ve seen it from Chucky in “Childs play” to Annabelle in “The Conjuring.” Although, this movie had a twist that separates it from the other

ones, that leaves the audience in shock.

This film is based in London where Greta (Lauren Cohan) an American girl who is just trying to start fresh is hired to nanny 8-year-old Brahm Heelshire, but Brahms isn’t your typical little boy,.

To Greta’s surprise Brahms is a doll.

The Heelshire’s have cared for the doll as a human for over 20 years to cope with the lost of their real son. While Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire are gone on holiday, Greta is left to follow a strict set of rules, but when she starts to neglect the rules and the care of Brahms she begins to experience unexplainable events leading her to believe that the doll is alive.

The plot of the movie was unoriginal but the ending wasn’t. It has the wow effect that most doll movies lack. The unexplainable events could have been a little more on the scary side but it’s the perfect amount to scare those younger teenage kids who seem to always attract to this kind of scary movies considering the film was rated PG-13, they hit their demographics.

During the film the sense of darkness starts to turn into more of an emotional story as more details starts to develop. This film tried so hard that is had a lot going on in the scenes it sadly forgot to scare us.

Orange county’s very own local boys in Ridgeway have released their third album “Untitled”, released off of Sun Terrance Records. This album features 6 melodious tracks, that throw down a spiral of melancholy feels.

Starting the album off with a piece titled “Rosegold” which is 3 minutes of pure insane instrumentals all leading up to the intro of the second track titled “St. Helena”. This piece is short and mellow but dark and gloomy in a very subtle and inventive way.

Track 3 “Downwind” is the first track where vocals are finally heard.

The shouts and screams are so heart aching in this track that it’s no lie why they refer to themselves as the OC sad boys. As the rest of these tracks do,

“Downwind” runs through to the next track titled “High Desert”, where vocals are spotted again but this time its more of a soothing vocal for about 10 seconds and we are brought back to heavy drums and raspy screams.

“Moritiz Stiefel” is the fifth track on the record and the longest of all, to add it’s by far my favorite. The vocals are so rich and soothing with the perfect melodic balance in the instruments to accompany it. This piece has such a nostalgic feel to it.

“Im terrified of this very moment, ill glorify the day. Fantasize of the very moment when blue skies turn gray” holy wow that hit leaves a sort of numbing feeling, just let those lyrics sink into your deepest core.

To end the album, track six titled “Faded” is the perfect closure for an album that had it all. Without ruining the balance. “Faded”, is basically the cool down, with so many elements this song just brings you back to the gentle comfort.

“Untitled” is a total vibe leap from the bands prior album “Notes from the Underground”, it has a heavier approach but being subtle with it. It’s
