clare Brothers Andrew, Anthony, Matthew, and Thomas clare Working with siblings is not for everyone, but for the Clare Brothers, it’s a dream come true. Working together is an exciting part of coming in to Orana’s Netley Business Services site for Andrew, Anthony, Matthew and Thomas. Each of the boys are currently working on different projects - Andrew is packaging and assembling universal spacers, Anthony and Thomas are building water sprinkler systems, and Matthew is assembling dollies for Schneider Electric. When Thomas started working in 1999, he knew it was important for him to have his brothers working alongside him. In-turn, Anthony began his job soon after in 2000, with Andrew and Matthew starting in August 2021.

Cover Story “Since beginning at Orana, the Clare Brothers have been nothing but kind and helpful, they’re keen to try their hand at a number of different projects too.” Orana Netley Business Services Coordinating Supervisor, Andrew Roberts said. In addition to employment, the boys have participated in some Developmental Education Programs, such as Cooking with Confidence, with Orana Client Development Coordinator, Kim Merchant. Outside of work, Andrew, Anthony, Matthew, and Thomas, live with their mother, Mandi, and help her with laundry and other household tasks. Andrew and Anthony have a special interest in gardening too, with a love for flowers and brightly coloured blooms. It’s obvious that each of the boys have a love for sport, especially AFL, following the Adelaide Crows. Both Anthony and Andrew know the names of every player on any team, not just their own, as well who the captain is and who is out, injured. The boys also have a billiards table at home and enjoy playing 8 ball and other pool games on a regular basis. Weekends are spent with family and friends, participating in social outings, holidays, and activities. Each of the boys will be heading to Victor Harbor over the next few weekends to explore Granite Island and all that the seaside town has to offer. The Clare Brothers will also be heading to Kangaroo Island, excited for the boat ride ahead.

150 Million Reasons to celebrate

Celebrating a milestone achievement with Schneider electric. Orana’s Business Services recently celebrated a momentous achievement, as our employees reached a major milestone for one of Orana’s long-standing customer, Schneider Electric For over 25 years, Orana has partnered with Schneider Electric, formerly Clipsal. During this time, Orana employees assembled and packaged over 150 million ‘dollies’ parts! Dollies

are an important component of Schneider Electric’s products, and they are shipped from Orana to their Gepps Cross factory to be assembled into 20,000 switches per day. Schneider Electric staff from both the Adelaide and Sydney Head Office, visited Orana’s Netley Business Services in April to present them with a ‘Golden Dollie’ in recognition of their monumental achievement. Employees from Murray Bridge, Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Loxton, Mount Gambier, and Netley, have worked hard to achieve this milestone, with up to 80 people involved in the project on any given day.

7

“It was great to see the passion and dedication of Orana employees during our visit. The Golden Dollie awarded to Orana is very special and you should all be very proud.” Schneider Electric, Director of Manufacturing, Damien Spy said. We look forward to continuing our growing partnership with Schneider Electric in the coming years after a quarter-century of collaboration.

What’s happening

Amaroo

Celebrating a milestone birthday and a month of outings. Amaroo has recently been a hive of activity, with resident June celebrating a significant milestone birthday.

June has lived in Amaroo for the past two years and considers it her happy home. She also created the Amaroo Wildlife Garden, which includes carefully painted ceramic animals from classes she has taken over the years. “June’s laugh brings joy on daily basis to those around her, she has the most infectious smile” Orana Client Coach, Jess Divola says.

Turning 50 is commonly referred to as the “golden birthday”, but June sees it as another reason to celebrate.

Colin and Graham, two other Amaroo residents, have been busy out and about.

June celebrated her 50th birthday with a big party and a night of fun at Club Marion with her family and friends.

Keen fisherman Graham went fishing at the Onkaparinga River with Client Coach, Jess, trying their luck at reeling in a few fish

using cockles and beach worms. Unfortunately, no fish were caught, but they had a fantastic day! Colin and Graham have both recently visited the Port Adelaide Railway Museum, where they learned about the history of trains in Australia and the role they played during the two World Wars. Other Amaroo residents have been busy taking part in arts and crafts activities and exploring the local community.

School holiday

mylor camp During the April school holidays, from the 27th to 29th April, young campers made their way to Mylor to kickstart a weekend of fun-filled activities and adventures with friends. The children’s school holiday camps are designed for children aged 10 to 17 who have Down syndrome or other chromosomal disorders. Camps encourage life skills through activities and a variety of programs, as well as social skills and independence. “The venue was great, staff were friendly and helpful, and it’s great that our son could mix with other children.” A Camper parent says.

During holiday camp, participants took part in a variety of activities such as outdoor games, bingo, and a talent show. Participants could also try their hand at the Mylor low ropes and challenge course, which proved to be quite a challeng at times! On the last day of camp, participants visited Hahndorf Farm Barn to interact with the animals and share a picnic lunch before returning home. Orana School Holiday Camps are held during the April and September school holidays each year. A variety of fun and exciting activities and programs are planned for the July school holidays.

“It is great that we can support parents to have a break while their child is enjoying all the fun activities of camp.” Orana Holiday Coordinator, Amy Sherpa said.

Employability

Why work in disability? You want a stable career and job security

With Australia’s ageing and disability populations on the rise, the disability sector can provide reliable and consistent job security. Aged and disability careers are expected to grow rapidly over the next five years, according to Job Outlook, the Australian Government’s career support website. This career path also has lower unemployment rates, which means that skilled and qualified people are less likely to be out of work. You’re looking for versatility

As a Client Coach with Orana, you’ll be able to do everything from personal care through to supporting someone to participate in community and recreational activities – no two days are ever the same! You will always have versatility in your role.

13

You’re ready for a new challenge

You want to empower people

There aren’t many jobs where you can say it’s your job to support someone live their best life, but as a Client Coach, you can!

We all want our work to be meaningful, and as a Client Coach, you’ll form lasting relationships with clients while supporting them to live empowered and independent lives.

Working in the disability sector keeps you challenged and learning new things – it’s a great way to expand your skill repertoire and put your talents to good use! “Orana’s strong commitment to training our staff ensures that all of our clients receive best practice support, and our staff continue to grow in their professional development.” Orana Training and Development Coordinator, Gary Barker said. You want more than a desk job

Disability support work is ideal if you enjoy working in environments where you can form relationships and interact with a wide range of people. Many Client Coaches work on a casual, part-time or contract basis; this is not your typical nine to five office job! This flexibility allows for a healthy work-life balance and the ability to work when you are available.

GOOD

Nutrition

The importance of a healthy and balanced diet. A healthy diet is essential for good health and nutrition because it provides your body with the essential nutrients it needs to function. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a balanced diet protects against many chronic non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Good nutrition, a healthy and balanced diet, and regular physical activity can help reduce high blood pressure, lower

cholesterol, improve your wellbeing, increase your energy level, and improve your ability to recover from injury or illness. Your daily food choices have a significant impact on your health and should include a variety of food groups such as: • Fruit and vegetables • Lean protein like meat, fish, eggs, and milk • Legumes like lentils and beans • Whole grains like wheat, rye, and rice Eating a variety of the above foods and consuming less salt, sugars, and saturated fats, are essential for a healthy diet.

Orana’s Nutrition and Healthy Living program is a great introduction to building a healthy meal plan, learning about the importance of nutrition and how best to incorporate healthy habits into your lifestyle. Interested in learning more about your diet and how to create a healthy meal plan? Contact our team on 8375 2000.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR

ndis plan

At Orana, we appreciate the journey you have taken to achieve your NDIS plan. That is why we want to assist you in making the most of your plan and ensuring it works perfectly for you. It is important to remember that your NDIS plan is designed to provide ongoing support and assist you in reaching your goals. To help you get the most out of your NDIS plan, Orana Support Coordinators share their top tips for making the most of your funding. Take the time to understand your plan

The funding you have been allocated is based on your goals outlined in your planning meeting. Your NDIS plan will list your goals and outline how much and where your funding has been allocated. Categories that may have received supports can include core supports, capacity building supports and capital supports. Your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) can assist you to understand each category. Check-in on your plan regularly

Check-in with your plan around the halfway mark - if you have a one-year plan, check-in around six months, and if you have a two-year plan, check-in around the one-year mark.

By the halfway point, you should have spent approximately half of your funding, spending too much money early on is just as problematic as not spending enough. Checking your plan will allow you to see which services are helping you in meeting your goals, as well as which services are no longer required or are unnecessary. Setting a time to check-in with your Support Coordinator, LAC, or Plan Manager is a great way to ensure you’re on track and your funds are being spent on achieving your goals. It’s the ideal time to make any necessary changes. Know your local area and what’s available in the community

Your Support Coordinator or LAC can assist you in locating

supports, services, and activities in your local community that are of interest to you or may help you achieve your goals. This could include local events, capacity building programs like Orana’s Life Skills Development programs, special interest classes, or leisure groups. Local groups and events are also a great way to improve your social skills and independence, while also providing a great opportunity to make new friends. It’s a win-win situation!

Orana is committed to supporting you through every step of your NDIS journey, contact us to find out more about our experienced Support Coordinators and how we can help you achieve your goals. Contact our team on 8375 2000.
