Josh competed in ten-pin bowling with a team of elite South Australian athletes, returning with two ribbons and a silver medal. The South Australian team included of five athletes, including Josh as Team Capitan, as well as a coach, volunteers, and a large cheer squad.

Since taking up the sport nine years ago, Josh has represented South Australia in a number of interstate competitions. He has continued to improve his

“For me it’s not about winning, its about getting along with and making new friends. It’s about being a part of the community and getting involved.”

As a very proud Special Olympian, the event’s motto resonates well with Josh; Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.

When campers returned to the Brownhill Creek Caravan Park, the weather was perfect for an afternoon of cricket in the sun and swimming.

Dinner was homemade pizzas, which everyone enjoyed outside while the weather was perfect.

In the evening, campers could play some outdoor games, go for a walk, or head to Carrick Hill to watch the sun set over Adelaide.

Netley Business Services Employee, Meredith, has kick started her Christmas gifting by recycling a number of old jars that were previously used at our Netley Business Services Site.

These jars were originally used to store our With Love dukkah, but as the expiration date approached, the jars were no longer required.

With an idea and the gifting spirit present, Meredith took two boxes (42) jars home. With the support of her Client Coach Audrey, the pair came up with the idea of turning each jar into a gift for Meredith’s friends, carers, and family.

Meredith and Audrey were on a mission, so they soaked the jars, scrubbed and removed the labels, dried them, and then filled each jar with hot chocolate and marshmallows. Attached to each jar was a carefully crafted spoon that had been dipped in chocolate and a small chocolate bar.

Meredith also printed a note for each jar to thank and wish each recipient a Merry Christmas.

“I am very happy that we made these, and I am excited to give them as gifts.”

Meredith Baxter.

Gifting in the Christmas season can be expensive and stressful; recycling items is a fantastic way to create meaningful gifts to

give family, friend, and carers. It’s better for the environment and allows you to show off your creative flair!

Meredith’s gifts are a creative and fun way to create your own heartfelt and meaningful gift this holiday season.

We look forward to getting creative and seeing what people can make with recycled materials.

SCHOOLS

It is said it takes a village to raise a child, and Woodend primary school has embraced this throughout 2022 by collaborating with a team of specialist educators, allied health therapists, and families to create an inclusive learning environment for Koa, a student with Down syndrome.

Despite health concerns and Covid-19 impacting his attendance throughout 2022, the goal of providing an inclusive learning program was achieved. Koa is successfully participating and learning in the classroom with his peers, thanks to the support of his education team..

Gabby Aschberger, Orana’s Education Consultant, worked with school staff to observe Koa in class and meet with his teacher and School Service Officers (SSO’s). The school implemented recommendations to establish a work system for Koa in class.

Koa has his own desk located close to a set of draws containing learning and reward activities. Learning tasks, target Koa’s goals identified though the Abilities Based Learning and Educational Support (ABLES) assessment tool, and allied health recommendations.

Koa uses a First-Then visual and a timer to indicate when a task is completed. He is responding positively to activities chosen from one of four colour-coded draws.

Once a term, educators, family members, and allied health specialists gather for a Team Around the Child meeting to discuss Koa’s progress and plan next steps.

A recent 12-month review of his goals revealed fantastic progress in most learning areas as well as gains in his social and physical development.

Congratulations, Koa and his educational team!

Orana’s Education Consultants work with families, educators, and therapists to support and coordinate a holistic approach to successful inclusion at school for children with Down syndrome, other chromosomal disorders, and intellectual disability.

MANAGiNG ANxiETY

In the festIve seAson

Christmas and the Festive Season is a busy, and sometimes stressful and overwhelming time of year.

For many, it’s the perfect time to meet up with friends and family to celebrate, but for others it may bring on feelings of stress and anxiety.

People with disability and those who support them may experience a range of stressors throughout the Christmas season. It’s important to acknowledge these stressors, and what steps you can take to reduce these feelings.

Plan ahead

When managing accommodation, travel, and anxiety symptoms, making sure that any holiday plans are well thought out in advance is a wonderful action plan!

Accessibility, location near activities, family and friends, and transportation are great to keep in mind when booking you accommodation.

When you prepare ahead of time, you may research these factors, allowing you to focus more on what’s most important to you.

Set limits

Set limits for the amount of time you spend in social situations. Sticking to a routine can greatly help when feelings of anxiety and stress are present.

Listen to the signs and symptoms of your body when you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

Create your own traditions

A great way to stay engaged and positive during the festive season is to create your own new traditions!

Why not cook a festive meal, get crafty with decorations, or purchase or make an advent calendar?

Be present

Holidays are often busy.

We spend lots of time planning, buying gifts, hosting, and celebrating. To keep ourselves from being lost in ‘doing mode’ and move towards ‘being mode’, practise mindfulness and allow yourself to be in the present moment.

If you struggle with social anxiety, Orana’s Social Skills developmental program may be for you. Learn about social norms and behaviours, and practise communication and relationship skills, to become more confident in social situations.

For more information on Orana’s developmental education programs, please contact our team on 8375 2000 or visit oranaonline.com.au

RiVERLAND UPDATES

We are excited to announce the commencement of our redevelopment project in Loxton. Three new custom-build homes will be built as part of this development. Each new home is currently under construction and will include three bedroom, each with its own ensuite, a large living and dining area, an office, and a rear garden. Each home is completely accessible and built with our clients in mind.

“This project will see Orana supporting more clients in the Riverland area, providing a new home to call their own. “

Jim Liu, Orana CEO

These homes will be built and managed by local construction company, Handbuilt Homes Riverland. Over the last few years, Handbuilt Homes have won several awards from HIA for their excellent outcomes and builds across the Riverland and surrounding areas.

“We’re proud to be able to update and modernise our current Supported Independent Living homes to continue to provide a fantastic experience and level of support for our clients.”

Rebecca Ellis, Executive Manager, Community Services.

Each new home is expected to be completed and ready to for occupancy in by late 2023.

If you are interested in finding your new home amongst the picaresque Riverland, please contact our team on 8375 2000.

SHORT-TERM

ACCOMMODATION

Did you know, Orana’s shortterm accommodation can give people with disability a safe, supportive, and enriching experience whilst providing families a break from the caring role?

Short-term accommodation flexible, and is a great way for a person to experience the feeling of living independently. It’s a great opportunity to be introduced to what Supported Independent Living is like and if it’s suitable.

Did you know that Orana works with a number of local business to provide some great experiences for our short-term accommodation guests?

Our connection with West Beach Caravan Park allows guests to stay throughout the year in one of their cabins. The park has a water park, bouncing pillow and so many other attractions, perfect for a summer getaway!

An added benefit of shortterm accommodation, is the experience of trying new things. People are able to explore the local community and take part in any experiences or activities. It gives people a chance to build new relationships, make friends and build on social skills.

“I regularly use Orana’s shortterm accommodation as a way of being independent away from my home with my parents.” Said Caitlin, a regular short-term accommodation user.

Short-term accommodation is available for as little as one night, to two weeks at a time.

Each option can be used on a regular basis, as a one-off, or during school breaks. Our aim is to give people and their families support and care that gives them peace of mind.

Our experienced staff can provide short-term accommodation in your own home, our city-based apartment, Whyalla, or at a location of your choosing.

To be eligible for our short-term accommodation service, you will need to have funding in your NDIS plan or the ability to pay for your own support.
