the first organisation in South Australia to host an event of this kind, and we are committed to making it a memorable, inclusive celebration for everyone.’ Orana’s commitment to inclusiveness is not just an obligation; it is a fundamental part of our organisation, it is our guiding principle, embedded in the very fabric of who we are. Orana believes that every person, irrespective of their abilities, can shine brightly and contribute to our shared human experience. Orana’s mission has always been to create opportunities for individuals to excel, to learn, to grow, and to shine. At our recent Evening Under the Stars Gala Ball, we embarked on taking important steps towards fulfilling that mission.

Celebrating international day of people with disability! After the inaugural celebration in 2019, An Evening Under The Stars returned on December 1st after a brief hiatus due to the impact of COVID-19. The celebratory event, which took place at the historic Ayers House, provided an opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate inclusivity. The evening was full of fun and a genuine sense of community spirit, and it certainly lived up to its promise.

Guests from across the state came together to celebrate and commemorate the International Day of People with Disability.

An Evening Under The Stars is more than just a ball; it’s a celebration of diversity, inclusiveness, and the potential that resides within each individual. Guests joined to celebrate the contributions of people with disability in our communities, workplaces, and societies. This event, on International Day of People with Disability, provided guests with a precious opportunity to reflect on the progress we’ve made in fostering an inclusive society, but also to acknowledge the work that still lies ahead. A day to celebrate the achievements of those who have overcome challenges, to recognise the strength that resides in diversity, and to recommit ourselves to breaking down barriers that still exist. The event’s theme, An Evening Under the Stars, symbolises our shared journey to reach for the stars and achieve greatness together. By embracing diversity, we reach new heights and create a world where everyone can fulfill their potential. To celebrate the achievements of people with disability, each guest received a small but meaningful gift: a potted succulent. Orana

Ryan Battersby and Josh Morpeth, the event MCs and Orana Ambassadors, took charge of this extraordinary event, captivating the audience with their unwavering confidence and magnetic charisma. Orana Ambassador, Amanda Reilly, notes that celebrating

disability is about seeing people’s abilities in a different way. Adelaide-based band, Wild Side, took charge of the dance floor, captivating guests and keeping them on their feet throughout the night. Thank you to all guests for attending this special event and for continuing to advocate and work toward a more inclusive society. Our commitment to empowering, creating

opportunities, and breaking down barriers for people with disability continues to grow as we celebrate as one community.

Disability royal commission Last week marked a significant milestone for the disability sector as the highly anticipated final report of the Disability Royal Commission was unveiled on Friday, the 29th of September. This momentous occasion has been eagerly awaited by stakeholders and the wider community alike. The culmination of an extensive and comprehensive enquiry, the release of the final report, unveiling a comprehensive set of 222 recommendations aimed at propelling transformative changes across the sector, signifies a pivotal moment in the pursuit of justice, equality, and inclusivity for people with disability. The Disability Royal Commission has diligently examined and scrutinised various aspects of the sector, aiming to shed light

on systemic issues, identify areas for improvement, and provide recommendations for a more inclusive future. The final report, a result of meticulous research, exhaustive consultations, and the invaluable contributions of numerous individuals and organisations, is poised to shape the future of the disability sector. Its findings and recommendations hold the potential to drive transformative change, ensuring that the rights and needs of people with disability are prioritised and safeguarded. The responsibility of considering and responding to these recommendations now lies with the Australian Government and state and territory governments, with a deadline of 31 March 2024.

Orana will diligently monitor these recommendations and ensure that the Orana community is promptly informed of any announced changes that may impact our clients. We will provide regular updates through our website and Facebook page. We will continue to advocate with industry bodies to ensure that the best interests of all our clients are maintained.

Empowering growth Plants cultivated by loxton business services A talented crew of individuals is taking root in the horticulture industry, and their efforts are soon to blossom into a venture that will improve the look of our gardens while also creating jobs, helping people develop their skills, and strengthening the friendships among the Loxton Business Services employees.

A team of dedicated Orana employees, led by Fiona Schultz, the Business Operations Manager -South Region, is actively involved in caring for and cultivating a variety of plants ready for sale and distribution to the community. We highly encourage visitors to stop by the Loxton site and purchase a beautiful and reasonably priced plant or two. Down syndrome awareness month Orana’s celebration BBQ October is a month that holds special significance for many communities worldwide. It is a time of celebration, education, and unity as people join together to observe Down Syndrome Awareness Month. This annual event serves as a platform to promote awareness and foster inclusivity for individuals with Down syndrome. It provides an opportunity to educate the public about this genetic condition and promote understanding. Down Syndrome Awareness Month is a special time that focuses on celebrating the talents and achievements of

individuals with Down syndrome, as well as foster a spirit of community among people of varying abilities. To celebrate this occasion, Orana hosted a community BBQ. Clients, staff members, and their families were all welcome. This inclusive approach aimed to bring everyone together and create a fun environment for everyone to enjoy. The event served as a powerful reminder of our commitment to championing inclusivity and promoting an environment where diversity is not only accepted but also embraced and celebrated. disability service conference The Australian Disability Service Conference, hosted by One Community, serves as a platform for disability service providers from all over Australia to come together and share their expertise. This conference is specifically designed for the workforce and is organised by the workforce itself. Orana and Volunteerability staff Adam, Annette and Rachel, had the opportunity to attend and present at this prestigious conference in November. The team discussed the various benefits of volunteering for both organisations and individuals with disability, highlighting how it can serve as a valuable tool for

everyone involved. Adam, Annette, and Rachel emphasised the significance of clearly defining volunteer roles to prevent any potential exploitation of participants. They also discussed the importance of having robust policy and procedure frameworks in place to prevent volunteers from being taken advantage of. Throughout the conference, the Orana team had the opportunity to showcase several work, health and safety videos, created by the talented team at Volunteerability. The conference highlighted that engaging in volunteer work is more than just an act of

kindness. It is a transformative experience that provides empowerment, a sense of belonging, and the chance to make a meaningful impact.

Triumph in training Orana Ambassadors are our voices of inclusivity Armed with a newly acquired skills and a passion for advocacy, Orana Ambassadors, Amanda, Josh and Ryan, have recently completed their training modules as part of the Orana Ambassador Program. During their training, Amanda, Josh, and Ryan learned about the responsibilities of being an Ambassador, the qualities of effective leadership, perfecting their public speaking skills, and gaining a comprehensive understanding of various Orana services. Orana Ambassadors were equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively represent Orana, thanks to the

assistance and support of the South Australian Council for Intellectual Disability (SACID). The Orana Ambassador’s main responsibility is to effectively represent and promote Orana services at various activities and events, such as our highly anticipated Evening Under The Stars Gala Ball. “Amanda, Ryan and Josh, have done an outstanding job in their training. It’s great to see our team so excited and passionate about what the next year will bring. We’re proud of their commitment so far, and can’t wait to see them thrive in their roles in 2024.” said Amy Sherpa, Orana’s Engagement and Inclusion Coordinator.

club slick: party for the ages get back band strikes a cord at Club Slick. Get Back, Adelaide’s favourite Rock ‘N’ Roll cover band performed a set of groovy tunes that got everyone on the dance floor at the Club Slick event in November. Music has the remarkable ability to bring together diverse communities and overcome barriers. A live band, in particular, has the capacity to unite people through their shared love for music and the joy of dancing. Club Slick creates an incredible atmosphere that promotes dancing, enjoyment, and the

formation of friendships through shared experiences. Thank you to our favourite Rock ’N’ Roll band, Get Back, for joining us in November. In 2024, we are excited to announce the return of the best tunes and extend a warm welcome to everyone for our monthly Club Slick events. Club Slick is a monthly event that takes place on Friday nights at the Burnside Ballroom. It offers a wonderful opportunity for individuals with disabilities to come together, socialise, and develop their skills. By promoting increased participation in community activities, Club Slick aims to support the overall development and inclusion of

Wheeling into a sunny paradise South Australia’s accessible beaches As the summer season commences and the temperature rises, Australians eagerly embrace the quintessential tradition of basking in the sun at their nearby beaches. The beach is not just a spot to relax and enjoy the refreshing

water while indulging in a delicious ice cream treat. It is also a captivating environment that offers a multitude of sensory experiences, which should be accessible to everyone. In recent years, there has been a notable trend towards inclusivity on Australian beaches. Efforts to make these popular coastal destinations more accessible have resulted in the implementation of various amenities and

infrastructure improvements. From the introduction of beach wheelchairs to the installation of accessible bathrooms, pathways, improved parking facilities, and beach mats, these initiatives aim to ensure that everyone can enjoy the sea and sand without barriers. Features: Orana’s Galway Supported Independent Living apartments have recently undergone a remarkable transformation transformation, turning them into a vibrant community hub, with a focus on community and inclusion. A number of new programs have recently been introduced to the residents at the complex, with the goal of getting everyone involved and building on skill development. Our Marleston apartments are conveniently located next to a medical centre and pharmacy and have easy access to public transport. This apartment complex is home to up to 20 residents and encourages community living. The outdoor area at Galway has recently been refurbished with new furniture, a new BBQ, and a pizza oven that were generously donated, adding to the community environment. The outdoor gathering space has more greenery to make it feel more welcoming, as well as a variety of furniture to accommodate everyone. Our Marleston location has a range of twobedroom and single-bedroom apartments available to suit your need for independence. We are currently looking for seven tenants across a number of apartments within the community complex. With such a focus on community and becoming an inclusive environment, Galway is the perfect place to build and form new friendships and become part of a strong community.

loxton sil development We are pleased to announce that our redevelopment project in Loxton is nearing completion. The new development of three supported independent living homes in the Riverland is expected to be complete by April 2024. Once completed, these new homes will be able to accommodate additional SIL clients from the Riverland area, in modern, purpose-built homes. House one, pictured above, is due to be finished in the coming weeks, with houses two and three, finished in the new year. Landscaping for these new properties will be completed by mid-2024, with gorgeous flora provided by our Loxton Business Service team. Orana is proud to be able to update and modernise our

facilities to provide a fantastic experience and level of support to our clients in the Riverland area. We are excited to be our expanding our services in this region, providing new homes for people to call their own.

Short-term accommodation We’ll be here when you need us. Orana’s short-term accommodation is available throughout the year to provide support for people with disability and their families. This support is especially valuable during the Christmas and holiday season. It gives people with disability a safe, supportive, and enriching experience, while families a break from their caring role. We offer short-term accommodation options that can be provided regularly or as a one-time arrangement. It’s important to plan ahead when organising support over the Christmas season, the Christmas season. We highly recommend reaching out to our

team now to ensure that you secure the support you need. Our association with West Beach Caravan Park enables guests to stay in one of their cabins throughout the year. The park has a water park, a bouncing pillow, and a multitude of other attractions, making it ideal for a summer getaway. An added benefit of shortterm accommodation, is the opportunity of trying new things. People are able to explore the local community and take part in any experiences or activities. It allows people to form new relationships, make new friends, and improve their social skills. “I regularly use Orana’s shortterm accommodation as a way of being independent away from my home with my parents.” Caitlin, a frequent short-term accommodation user said.

Short-term accommodation is available for as little as one night, to two weeks at a time. Each option can be used on a regular basis, as a one-off, or during school breaks. Our aim is to give people and their families support and care that gives them peace of mind. Our experienced staff can provide short-term accommodation in your own home, our city-based apartment, Whyalla, or at a location of your choice. Club Slick is a monthly dance party providing opportunities to have a groove with new and old friends to a range of funky music throughout the decades. Club Strike is a monthly bowling event at Zone Bowling. A great opportunity to catch up with friends, learn new skills and have fun! Camps (10 – 17 years) and Getaways (18+) offer a fun group holiday experience where you can build on your social skills, make new friends, and build your independence. Camps and Getaways run for two nights with a jam-packed schedule of fun activities and experiences.
