We are thrilled to have recently announced the grand opening of our newest Independent Living Homes in Loxton Riverland. This initiative represents a significant step towards promoting independence, inclusivity, and a sense of community for people with disability in the region.

About the Project:

The new Independent Living homes include three new residential homes with ensuites and two brand new three-bedroom homes, the culmination of our two million dollar investment. The new Independent Living Homes reflects our unwavering commitment to creating

living spaces that cater to the unique needs of individuals with disability. Located on Bookpurnong Road, Loxton, these homes have been meticulously designed to provide a safe, accessible, and supportive environment for residents.

Key Features:

Tailored Accessibility: The new homes boast state-of-the-art accessibility features, ensuring that each resident can navigate their living space with ease and comfort.

Community Centric Design: Strategically located just three minutes from the heart of Loxton and the local community, residents will have easy access

to essential services and recreational facilities, promoting community integration and engagement.

Holistic Support Services: We are dedicated to delivering person-centred support services, including personalised care plans, assistance with daily activities, and a team of passionate professionals committed to supporting residents’ independence.

We recently celebrated the launch of the new homes at an invitation-only event on Friday 19th July at the new properties, located at 1852 Bookpurnong Road, Loxton. The event included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, officiated by Mayor Trevor Norton, followed by guided tours of our new homes, allowing attendees to experience first hand the positive impact of this transformative initiative.

CEO Jim Liu stated, “I am excited about the development of our new properties and their profound impact on improving the lives of people with disability in the Loxton Riverland community. This initiative demonstrates our commitment to creating inclusive spaces that promote independence, accessibility, and a sense of belonging for everyone. We believe these properties will not only be homes but also catalysts for positive change, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for people with disability.”

NDIS NE w Bi LL

In early April, Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme of Australia, Bill Shorten, tabled the NDIS Amendment Getting the NDIS Back on Track No.1 Bill 2024. Tabled in parliament, this Bill will enable first legislative reforms for the NDIS Review recommendations. The Bill has been referred to the Community Affairs Legislation Committee for an inquiry and complete report by the end of July.

Below are the key amendments proposed by the Bill:

• Definitions of NDIS Support: Fundamentally, a support, under the new Bill, will only be an NDIS support if it relates to a person’s impairment.

• New Ways to Access the NDIS: New participants will access the NDIS under the disability requirements,

the early intervention requirements or both. This will allow specialist earlyintervention pathways to be developed.

• New Framework for Setting NDIS Budgets: Enable reasonable and necessary budgets to be developed through a needs assessment, set at the ‘whole of person’ level rather than built line by line. The term NDIS supports will replace reasonable and necessary supports

• Funding and Acquittals: the NDIS would be prohibited from paying for supports that exceed total funding budgets (or funding periods), however, the rules would identify exceptional circumstances.

• Changes to Management of Plans: The NDIA would be able to make decisions about

the most appropriate way for flexible budgets or parts of budgets to be managed, whether that be agency, plan or self-managed, taking into account risks to participants.

• Quality and Safeguarding: The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commissioner would be able to delegate some of their functions and would stipulate conditions for becoming an approved quality auditor.

Orana is committed to closely monitoring the ongoing discussions related to the proposed legislation. We recognise the potential impact this may have on the NDIS and the broader disability sector. Our priority is to ensure that our clients, families and staff are kept fully informed of any developments in a timely and accurate manner.

WORLD D Ow N SYNDROME DAY

EMBRAC i NG

D i VERS i TY f OR A MORE i NCLUS i VE COMMUN i TY

World Down Syndrome Day, observed on March 21st each year, is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness, promoting inclusion, and celebrating the lives of individuals with Down syndrome. This special day provides an opportunity for communities worldwide to come together, recognise the unique abilities and contributions of those with Down syndrome, and advocate for a more inclusive society.

At Orana, we’re taking part in the #LotsOfSocks campaign. This

campaign, a now symbolic way for people around the world to show their support, encourages people to wear brightly coloured, mismatched or patterned socks, sparking conversations and drawing attention to the celebratory day. The silly socks symbolise the diversity and individuality that characterises the Down syndrome community.

The 2024 World Down Syndrome Day campaign, challenged the stereotypes of people with Down syndrome.

FACTS ABOUT DOWN SYNDROME

• Down syndrome is the most common genetic condition, occurring in approximately 1 in every 700 births worldwide.

• Down syndrome is classified into three types, with Trisomy 21 accounting for 95% of those with the genetic condition.

• World Down Synrome Day has been observed by the United Nations since 2012.

• The date for World Down Syndrome Day is the 21st of the third month, which represents the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome.
