Christmas Traditions But Make Them Eco!

As children, many of us grew up putting plastic tinsel on the Christmas tree, popping Christmas crackers for those small plastic toys that interested us for five minutes and unwrapping mountains of presents.

Around the world, waste at Christmas increases significantly - Australia is no exception with:

• $1 billion spent on new toys and an alarming 26.8 million toys thrown away. • Aussies using 150,000kms of wrapping paper. • Nearly 5 million tonnes of food going straight to landfill. • An overall increase of 30% in waste output.

However, as the world shifts to deal with the climate crisis, there are things we can do this Christmas to ensure the snow at the North Pole doesn’t melt.

Use eco-friendly decorations

Avoid plastic decorations like tinsel and baubles. Opt for eco-friendly alternatives made of sustainable materials, or better yet - make your own out of recycled items.

Choose recycled or reusable wrapping

Choose recycled paper, newspaper or fabric as wrapping paper. We’re lucky enough to feature two amazing businesses in this area within this Gift Guide! Check out Mind the Wrap and Wrappt. Gift an eco gift

Consider gifting an experience, DIYing a gift, or shop from sustainable businesses (hmm…we know where to find those!)

While it’s popular to deck your house with lights, with the cost of living rising faster than you can say ‘jingle bells’, it’s time to reduce your light display and switch to LED lights for house and tree lighting.

Use a real Christmas tree

Speaking of the tree, real trees are a more sustainable option than plastic ones. These trees can live for years, so you if you purchase a small tree, plant it in a large pot after Christmas and continue to use it for the next few years. Plenty of Christmas tree farms also have services where you can take your tree back after Christmas and they will replant.

Handmake your cards

They’re more meaningful than the “Wishing you a white Christmas” stock cards that we give while sweating under the scorching Aussie sun.
