Fostering – The new lifestyle career T

he number of children currently needing to be fostered nationally is at a 15 year high. At any one time there are over 50,000 children who are unable to live with their birth parents for various reasons.

Lisa, 47, wanted to be a foster mum after going through the care system as a child herself. There was no foster carer to look after her so she grew up in children’s homes; but she enjoyed the experience and is now using it to help others. Warning - Burglars Target Thorpe Bay!!!

M

any of you have probably noticed the increased presence of police and their patrol cars in the Thorpe Bay area. With the number of burglaries and theft from motor vehicles which are currently being experienced, I felt that you all should be warned to be more vigilant and report anything suspicious.

The core times for the burglaries are between 16:00 & 23:00 with the majority of them taking place between Maplin Way and Thorpe Hall Avenue but are not just limited to these areas whilst vehicle crime is normally taking place overnight.

A male, described as in his 30â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wearing black coloured clothing was seen to make off from one of the premises in Tyrone Road after the alarm activated and his push bike was left at the rear of the house.

If you see anything suspicious, please do not hesitate to contact the Police on 101, or 999 if you feel it is applicable.

Planning Your Estate? Don’t Leave It Too Late

here’s a natural reluctance for younger people to think about death and getting older. You are in all likelihood forging ahead just getting on with life, perhaps climbing up the career ladder, buying a house, settling down with a partner and having children.

Changes to the pension rules could trigger unwanted IHT . If you start to redirect your retirement savings over and above the new £50,000 limit into savings vehicles, such as ISAs or unit trusts, they will form part of your estate (not the case with pensions). To help parents navigate some of these bumpy paths, Thorpe Hall School’s Nursery is launching a programme of informative “Ask the Experts” sessions starting this month. They are designed specifically for parents of pre-school aged children, last just an hour, are free to attend and are open to all - whether your child attends Thorpe Hall’s Nursery or not.

A different expert will visit Thorpe Hall every term to share their knowledge and ideas in a friendly and informal group session. With a specialist subject each time, ‘Ask the 28

Method Gently melt the butter in a small pan over a low heat. Place the digestives in a plastic bag and crush to fine crumbs using a rolling pin; you can also do this in a food processor. Tip them into the pan with the melted butter, stir to coat, then transfer to a 20cm spring form cake tin (9cm deep). Using the back of a spoon, press them into the base, making sure you seal the edges. Place in the fridge while you prepare the next stage.

If using leaf gelatine, place in a bowl, cover with cold water, soak for 5 mins, then drain. Pour 3 tbsp boiling water over the soaked gelatine and stir to dissolve.

Place the crème fraîche in a small pan with the muscovado sugars and a pinch of sea salt, then gently heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until the mixture liquefies and the sugar has dissolved. Give the mixture a quick whisk to get rid of any lumps. It should be warm, roughly the same temperature as the gelatine solution. Stir the gelatine and vanilla extract into the crème fraîche mixture, transfer to a bowl and cool.

Caramel Cheesecake

T

his is a no-cook cheesecake and the lovely flavour comes from the malassesrich sugars so you don’t have the worry of making tricky caramel. Bit of a cheat really but fairly easy and good for entertaining.

Place the ricotta in a food processor and whizz until smooth, then add the crème fraîche mixture and whizz again. Pour this on top of the cheesecake base. Cover with cling film and chill overnight.

Run a knife around the sides of the tin, then undo the clip and remove it. Transfer to a plate or leave the cheesecake on the base for ease of serving. Pile the fudge flakes in the centre and dust with icing sugar. Cover and chill until required.

hoeburyness High School has always had a fantastic reputation for its musical ensembles and performances.

The school has a jazz band, concert band, show band, a more recently formed marching band and many other smaller ensembles.

The school concert band recently entered the Regional Music Festival and placed second out of all entrants with a score of 85/100 with honours. The show band helped the performing arts department put on a wonderful performance of the West End show Our House, which was highly acclaimed and played to sell-out crowds at the school just before Christmas. The jazz band has been playing gigs outside of school, most recently to celebrate a member of staffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birthday at the Thorpe Bay Yacht Club, whilst the saxophone group 52

have been playing at the Cliffs Pavilion and the Civic Centre for celebratory events.

Most of the older students who play instruments in school are members of all of these ensembles, but unfortunately there has been a decline over the last five years in the number of year 7 students wanting to learn traditional wind-band instruments at school.

There has been a big lean towards singing and dancing due to the impact of shows like Glee and High School Musical and an influx of drummers and guitar players due to the popularity of console games that involve pretending to play a small plastic guitar to emulate the sound of a real guitar on screen.

We realised that if the school didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t act quickly, then the great ensembles that we have in the school would soon dwindle in numbers and become no more.

So, Shoeburyness High School is currently embarking on a mission to get more young people playing musical instruments.

We have decided to begin Band Method-style lessons with a class in year 7.

The school has bought every student in the class instruments ranging from flutes and clarinets to trumpets and saxophones and the students are learning how to play these instruments during their music lessons.

The lessons are going fantastically well and the students are already beginning to be able to read music and to make noises on these instruments.

The students seem really enthused and have been invited to join a club that the music staff of Shoeburyness High School run every Tuesday night from 7pm til 9pm.

The club is called C-side Crusaders and is based in the music department at the school. Every Tuesday, students are taught how to play specific parts on their instruments to perform as part of a larger music ensemble. The C-Side Crusaders wind

band presents a fantastic opportunity for both students at Shoeburyness High School and the local community to learn how to play a wind or percussion instrument as part of a larger ensemble.
