t this time of year, thinking of taking colours used from Farrow & Ball’s range, truly a trip to our seafront isn’t particularly transforms the furniture into a unique creation at the top of my list of things to do. However, every time. one good reason to visit, is the newly opened shop ‘Beside the Sea’ which is just along from Ocean Beach on Eastern Esplanade. The shop ‘Beside the Sea’ is the dream child of local father and daughter team, Roger and Lisa Pickering. Roger has an amazing eye for detail and has been working with furniture for over 25 years whilst Lisa has a great gift for sourcing individual pieces of furniture that are in tune with today's trends. With their combined skills ‘Beside the Sea’ gives furniture a delightful modern infusion on classic styles and is already proving to be a success locally. ‘Beside the Sea’ spends their time travelling the length and breadth of the country, looking for the perfect pieces in need of restoration. They are firm believers of ‘they don’t make them like this anymore’.

Upholstered furniture is also brought back to life using these gorgeous fabrics without spoiling the pieces character and fineness.

Christmas Gifts With Christmas fast approaching ‘Beside the Sea’ also has many gifts ranging from signs using local wood that can be personalised and other such recycled materials such as slate and vintage cutlery to create wonderful chalkboards and hanging solutions. SIA Home Fashion is also available in the shop which includes beautiful picture frames, candle holders etc. ‘Beside the Sea’ is very proud to display & sell the art of local artist, Toni Lee. Toni paints on recycled floor boards using Farrow & Ball paint to create unique pieces in floral designs that can be ordered to work with your own colour schemes. And that’s not all, you can order bespoke cushions, bunting, kiddies dribble bibs, shoe bags, door stops and even a beautiful crystal chandelier! The list is never ending so I suggest it’s probably best if you pop along and see for yourselves.

"Supporters of HARP's Christmas Dinner Appeal for the Homeless"

Local Issues

HARP: Christmas Dinners Appeal F

or the vast majority of us, Christmas means being surrounded by family, friends and loved ones. We’ll be spoiling each other with gifts and fine food. We will enjoy laughter in a safe, secure and warm environment. Yes, Christmas can be a magical time for so many of us. But will we stop to think for one moment about others who are not as lucky, or as fortunate, as we are? HARP does, because so many people within our community who are disadvantaged and vulnerable need the vital support and lifelines that this independent Homeless Charity provides all year round, including Christmas time.

HARP’s Service Operations Manager Gary Turner explains,“Homelessness can be brought about by many diverse circumstances such as family breakdown, domestic violence, abuse, financial difficulties, depression, or mental illness. People who turn to drugs and alcohol then become dependant on these as an escape from the pressures of everyday life, also mostly they find are unable to sustain tenancies and therefore become Homeless. Homelessness can happen to anyone at anytime in their lives and this is usually brought about by unforeseen or tragic circumstances to people from all walks of life. HARP is the safety net for so many people who each have their own HARP is a comprehensive Homeless service based individual story to tell how they found in Southend and Westcliff that assists in helping themselves out on the street”. to positively turn around the lives of between 1,500 – 2,000 people every year. People of all age Gary continues,“When someone arrives at HARP’s groups arrive at the Day Centre, based in Valkyrie Day Centre their needs are immediately assessed Road in Westcliff, distressed and desperate for help, to ensure they receive the very best of help and this also includes many young people from within advice to address the issues surrounding their our local community. own particular circumstances. doesn’t begin and end by providing a roof over someone’s head, it requires on-going support from a team of specialist and dedicated staff to ensure the transition from desperately hopeless situations, into an independent lifestyle, is an effective journey for the long-term benefit of an individual”.

More Shelters HARP has been working towards combining their Day Centre and Night Shelter services at the Darnley Hotel premises situated in York Road, Southend. The plans for their new building is to see the commencement of its refurbishment from January 2013. There will also be a Community Room, Training Rooms, Staff Offices, Medical Facilities and some further Emergency Night Shelter Accommodation. They are scheduled to open and commence service provision at these new premises in August 2013, although they still need to raise £400,000 to complete this project that will leave a legacy for Southend’s Homeless for many years to come”. Gill Garwood HARP’s Chief Executive adds “HARP provides a comprehensive range of support and accommodation to help Southend’s homeless. This includes providing more than 6,000 hot meals at our Day Centre each year, which is often the starting point for vulnerable people as a first step towards seeking help to find a home of their own and getting back on their feet. However, each Christmas HARP aims to bring the gift of hope to

those who are homeless by providing a traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings to 700 homeless and disadvantaged people over the twelve days of Christmas in a warm and friendly atmosphere. This produces such a positive response from those in need who tell us that it gives them hope to know that someone actually cares about them”.

Oracle Hair & Beauty

Shaping up for the Party Season I

t’s definitely that time of year again. There’s a distinct nip in the air, Christmas decorations and tree lights are everywhere you look. My salon is very busy with ladies getting ready to par-tay in style in their festive up do’s and whispering to each other about the miracles of shapewear, or ‘magic knickers’as we Essex fashionistas prefer to call ‘em. Sales of the underwear that creates a slimming effect have, er, ballooned in the past five years. Since Spanx first hit the market and created a sensation by negating the need to buy old-fashioned and uncomfortable boned corset, further technological innovation and advances in the materials used to create a flatter tummy or nipped-in waist have created greater choice and hot looks. Working on similar lines to compression clothing used by athletes, you can drop a dress size without having to give up the white and party nibbles. However, you can’t just go out to your favourite department store grab a pair of stretch Bridget Jones specials and expect to have the killer curves of Kim Kardashian or Kelly Brook. Follow my tips and you’ll be the belle of the ball, not Cannon and Ball…

a high-waisted option that starts from under your bustline and finishes at the top of your legs, ensuring a smooth silhouette. If you're after thinner thighs, look for undies that resemble cycling shorts. Unlike those favoured by Wiggo, thigh-shapers come with a two-inch 'release panel' underneath and have a softer control woven into the fabric, so you won't sprout ugly bulges where the shorts end. Silky, sheen fabrics are best.Shapewear made from a matte fabric can cause friction with whatever fabric you wear on top, especially jersey. And let’s face it; silky knickers look much sexier matte ones. Well, mine do! Nude and black are the most practical and popular colours but white options are commonly available. So why not give Shapewear a try this party season - the right foundation makes whatever you wear on top look so much better and you’ll feel like a million dollars too. And as Gok says – it’s all about the confidence!

O

Sponsored by

Always wear your normal size - don't be tempted to go down a size, as it can bunch up and look worse. Avoid anything that finishes at the waistline because that's where a lot of women carry extra weight, which in turn will give you a really unflattering shape. Go for

Money Matters

The financial implications of living and working abroad I

f you are employed overseas or planning to work abroad, a welter of financial implications needs to be taken into account.

First of all however, it is comforting to know that you will not be alone in looking for new horizons. According to the Institute for Public Policy Research (Source: Foreign and Commonwealth Office News, 1/7/2010), some 5.6 million Britons now live abroad permanently, with another half a million living abroad for part of the year. But the Institute’s report suggests that many are under-prepared for the new challenges they face. So before you go, it is vital to have a financial checklist sorted, and because the implications can represent a potential minefield, it is always important to seek professional, specialist advice. Many expatriates have come to regret not doing this, either because they unintentionally break tax rules or fail to take advantage of a financial planning opportunity. Before going, you need to consider your status in the eyes of the UK tax authorities. As far as Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs is concerned, you are considered to be resident for tax purposes if you are in the country for 183 days or more per tax year. In general, if you work abroad for more than one full tax year, you become non-resident for

20

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

tax purposes in your home country, which allows you to enjoy a number of tax advantages. As you would not expect to pay income tax in your home country, you would pay at the local (often lower) rate and also avoid paying Capital Gains Tax on any chargeable gains made during the period of non-residence.

As far as National Insurance is concerned, many expats end up with large gaps in their contributions history, becoming ineligible for a UK state pension when they retire. This can be overcome by making voluntary National Insurance contributions while you are abroad. The moment you decide to move abroad is the time to review your financial planning. You will want to simplify your circumstances as much as possible and make your work abroad as financially rewarding as possible. There is no substitute for professional wealth management advice. Most of us do not have the time or knowledge to understand the complexities so seeking advice of a wealth expert is vital.

SOLD for £2200

Under The Hammer

Selling Potential I

’ve mentioned several times over the last few months how much the market has changed and indeed continues to change within the antiques and collectors field. It has certainly become much more discerning even though the audience has become so much bigger.

These numbers certainly open up the selling potential for customers as well as the buying possibilities for people who may not otherwise be able to attend an auction in person but put a lot of pressure on a saleroom to deliver well presented on line catalogues.

Our average catalogue has a viewing audience now of up to 50,000 compared with the few hundred that might attend a sale on a local basis. The last one had an astounding 200,000 viewers on our website alone with a further massive number via the-saleroom.com. Such figures would have been unheard of a few years ago and even now are significantly higher than many other on line auction rooms.

In general collectable ceramics have fallen out of favour but there are always exceptions, which we found recently when a damaged Royal Doulton Flambe figure romped over the finish line at a hefty £2,700 after three busy phone lines. Internet and room bidding. It was hotly followed by a mid 19th C mahogany plate camera which also went over the £2,000 mark.

SOLD for £2700

These and other similar results in the same sale confirm that the market is still very buoyant but demands obscure, unusual and quality items. By Trevor Cornforth Sponsored by

Promoting independent learning is the key P

upils at Thorpe Hall School are encouraged everyday to learn about learning. “If pupils know how learning takes place then they are in a better position to make sure it happens.” said Andrew Hampton, Headteacher. Thorpe Hall School educates girls and boys from age 2 to 16 at its 11 acre site in Thorpe Bay. Excellent, modern and purpose-built facilities, coupled with small class sizes enable the school to provide an outstanding education that goes well beyond academic success. “Our theme this term is to get pupils to reflect on their learning and gain a better understanding of what works for them. This might mean our Year 11 pupils refining their revision techniques as they prepare for GCSE or it might mean a class of Year 1 pupils learning active listening skills. 32

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

The overarching emphasis is on promoting independent learning where pupils see their teachers as supporters and facilitators rather than deliverers of knowledge”, Mr Hampton went on. “The most important thing is for pupils to realise that although learning happens in many different ways, the key to the most successful learning is the right attitude. That is why we spend time in every class, from Reception to Year 11 discussing and learning about the competencies you need to be a good learner”.

recipe of the month

85g butter, plus extra to top Good splash of double cream Grating of fresh nutmeg 15 shallots, peeled

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C/fan140°C/gas 3. Dust the beef in seasoned flour. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a heavy-based casserole and fry the beef in batches over a medium heat until browned all over, adding more oil if necessary. Lift out with a slotted spoon and set aside. 2. Heat another 1 tbsp olive oil in the casserole and gently fry the onion, celery and carrot for 10 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and fry for a couple of minutes, stirring, then return the beef to the pan along with the thyme and bay leaves.

3. Pour over the red wine and stock, then bring to the boil. Cover, transfer to the oven and cook for 2½-3 hours until really tender.

Barolo Braised Beef and Shallot Pie

T

his is another recipe that you can freeze and is very useful for entertaining over the festive period. If you want to leave it as a casserole instead of making into a sort of up market shepherd’s pie just leave off the mash. If you can’t get Barolo just buy a good full bodied spicy red wine, and you can always use braising steak instead of shin in the casserole. Enjoy!

Ingredients ( Serves 6)

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

5. Remove the casserole from the oven and stir in the shallots. Turn up the heat to 180°C / fan160°C /gas 4. Transfer the beef and shallots to a 2.5 litre pie dish and cover with mash. Rough up with a fork, dot with the extra butter and return to the oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Serve with seasonal vegetables. Next month’s recipe:

1.2kg beef shin, cut into chunks 2 tbsp seasoned flour for dusting 4-5 tbsp olive oil 1 small onion, very finely chopped 2 celery sticks, finely chopped 1 carrot, finely chopped 5 garlic cloves, crushed Small bunch of fresh thyme 3 bay leaves 600ml Barolo red wine 350ml good-quality beef stock 500g parsnips, cut into chunks 850g floury potatoes (such as maris piper), cut into chunks

36

4. Meanwhile, put the parsnips and potatoes in a pan of cold salted water, bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes until tender. Drain, then return to the pan over a low heat and mash (or use a potato ricer), adding 75g of the butter and the cream. Season with nutmeg, salt and pepper and set aside. Meanwhile, heat the remaining butter in a frying pan and gently fry the shallots until golden.

Health & Beauty

A holistic Christmas survival guide

C

hristmas comes but once a year and when it does it brings lots of nice gifts, nights out and good times with family and friends (if you’re lucky). But many of us get stressed and over-indulge which can often lead to illness and weight gain – and also an expensive year’s health club membership you bought out of guilt! So follow my Top 5 tips to help you survive Christmas 2012, without the festive hangover.

1. Instead of using Christmas as an excuse to eat

3. Don’t over-extend yourself and accept invites to every party, works do or night out. Choose the ones you really fancy and focus on being a party animal on those occasions. Spread yourself too thin and you could be ill for the all-important Christmas week (flu or alcohol poisoning anyone?).

4. Drink plenty of water after a boozy night out. Re-hydrate yourself to limit the impact of a hangover the next day. Anything from a pint to a litre would be good. It all depends on how much you can manage before passing out.

chocolate for the whole of December, how about strategically indulging yourself by picking certain days where you go for it i.e. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day? You could then aim to exercise restraint for the rest of the festive period (crazy idea I know, but you could try).

5. If you’re entertaining this year, leave nothing to the last minute. Sit down and plan your Christmas Day as early as possible. The better your plan, the less stressful it’ll all be. Having said that, always expect the unexpected as we all know what can happen to the best laid plans of mice and men.

2. Start a fitness program BEFORE the New Year rather than after it i.e. NOW! Everybody on the planet (plus their granny and their dog) drags themselves to the nearest gym or fitness centre on January 2nd in a desperate attempt to fulfil their New Year’s Resolution to ‘get in shape’.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Grace Simpson & Leia Braunton 2nd Place Winners

Advertorial

Time to Celebrate as Shoeburyness High School Textile Students win 7 out of 9 prizes at the Basildon Fashion Awards

Y

r10 and Yr 13 Textile pupils and Textile staff were invited to attend the Basildon Fashion Awards – in Association with South Essex College - on Sunday, 21st October 2012, at the Eastgate Centre in Basildon, as a result of their fashion design competition.

pupils had won 5 out of the 6 available ‘Top Design Awards’, each winning £50 worth of vouchers. Many congratulations to Catherine Jacomb in Yr 13, Sophie Boygle, Tabitha Baker, Samantha Hockley and Bethany Maddy in Yr 10.

Yr 10 students Grace Simpson and Leia Braunton’s competition design entries were so fantastic that they had made it into the final and their designs were ‘made up’ into prototype garments, which were unveiled at the awards ceremony. While the final judging took place, entertainment and a buffet were provided for all of the guests. Excitement mounted as the results were announced. Both Grace and Leia had jointly won the second prize of £100 worth of vouchers each, to spend in the Eastgate Centre Basildon. This is just brilliant news and many congratulations to them both. Grace and Leia had their photographs taken standing next to the models wearing their outfits on the catwalk.

Sian Dunmore – Textiles Department Young Creative Designer Award Congratulations to Antoine Pierre who won the Young Creative Designer Award sponsored by Ruark Audio.

As part of their Graphic Products AS Level the students had the opportunity to design and make a concept model of a radio. The students began this stage of their Controlled Assessment in January 2012 and in February an industry specialist, managing director and founder of the prestigious Ruark Audio, Alan O’Rourke, came in to speak to the students about radio design and begin the students on their journey. Ruark Audio have recently won ‘What High-Fi Award 2011’, Editor’s choice award from ‘How It Works Magazine’ and 5 stars from ‘Live Magazine’, amongst many other prizes. Alan’s advice to the students was extremely valuable, on conception of an idea to modelling prototypes and creating working

models. Alan returned to judge the final outcome in October 2012 in which the students presented their coursework, then explained their concepts for and the inspiration behind their designs, as well as show casing the final model. All students worked exceptionally hard to produce their coursework; they also achieved a 100% pass rate for AS Graphics in summer. Antoine was awarded his very own R1 deluxe table-top radio for “a creative and a unique design concept”,which was presented by Alan at the 6th Form awards evening on 10th October 2012.
