s I write this we are in the midst of the silly season – local council elections. So I thought I would give a personal viewpoint from one who is now also a candidate. It’s tough pounding the streets, writing articles, answering questions and chatting to people on a raft of subjects even though my team are in constant touch with residents.
Lord, have we lived through turbulent times - fi rst Brexit, which lasted for what first seemed a millennium, to the pandemic and all its crises from the lack of PPE, huge strain on our health and wellbeing services and much more. For those who did not succumb to this awful virus there was and is still the trauma and regret of lost family and friends, lost livelihoods and now to crown it all the worst cost of living crisis. Where is the real help there? Talk about kicking us when we’re down! And what do we now have to suff er – suffer the asinine antics of a Government that simply doesn’t know how to behave, has no empathy with the general population and has made us all look like fools. And don’t get me started on the Ukrainian refugees debacle when people are literally dying to get here. May 2022
And that is what leads me to look at the local situation. This country needs regulation – no one would dispute that – but it needs regulation that responds to a crisis before it becomes a drama. It needs to be reactive not proactive and fl exible flexible and humanitarian based. It must not demonise diff erent groups in society different but it must galvanise those who have, to want to do more for those who have not.

I think most councils across the UK did a wonderful job in the pandemic – and could have done more if Government allowed – after all, who better knows local circumstances? A councillor who knows their patch and its people, or a mandarin sitting in Whitehall? I know how hard officers at Southend Council worked throughout the pandemic – hour after hour, day after day, doing whatever they could to help those who were suffering through vulnerability, age, illness, isolation and family trauma. And never let us forget the army of volunteers who came forward! I
am absolutely committed to tackling anti-social behaviour in our town, and have made this one of my top priorities. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful area, with Leighon-Sea recognised as being one of the best places to live in the whole of the UK. I can entirely see why so many visitors want to come and enjoy our beautiful local area, especially in the summer months.

However, too often our local community has been the victim of horrendous levels of anti-social behaviour, with people coming to our town and drinking, taking drugs and causing damage to people and property. I am absolutely committed to ensuring that this summer local residents do not have to endure this kind of behaviour.
Safe and happy community
I have been actively engaging with the police on tackling this issue. I have met with local police officers to discuss what more can be done.
Last year we had the extremely successful Operation Union in the town, with more police patrols in the evenings and weekends throughout the summer, and I am pushing for it to return this summer. I am also supporting the work of Pub Watch, which allows our local pubs and bars to tackle street drinking, drug dealing, and underage drinking. I am calling for state-of-the-art knife poles to be installed, and for the installation of CCTV cameras in Old Leigh. I am delighted that we will be getting more police offices to join those already on our streets, bringing the total to fifteen, and I am working with the local community to ensure that they are properly targeted. I will continue to monitor this situation throughout the summer, and will do all I can to ensure that we can live in a safe and happy community.

DIVORCE LAW What the changes mean for you...
Big changes in divorce law came into force in England and Wales on 06 April 2022. The process for divorce is now much easier and far less adversarial. There is no longer any need to live apart for two years or apportion blame to either spouse. It is even possible for both parties to jointly submit an application together for divorce. The provision for one spouse to object to the divorce on the ground that they believe the marriage has not broken down can no longer be used to defend a divorce. These new rules will enable couples to separate with less animosity and will ease the stress often associated with family separation. Children of the marriage will be able to see that their parents have made a decision without blaming one or the other and that the divorce has come about as a result of a decision by both parties for the good of the whole family. It will remain exceptionally important to ensure that financial affairs and arrangements for the children are resolved with an approved court order when divorcing. Bravery awards for Essex Police officers who tackled Sir David Amess’s killer
T
wo unarmed Essex Police officers who tackled a terrorist just moments after he had fatally stabbed Sir David Amess MP have been awarded the force’s highest honour, the Merit Star.
PC Ryan Curtis and PC Scott James, of the South LPA Disruptor team, were on their way back from arresting a wanted man when they heard reports on their radio of a stabbing at the Belfairs Methodist Church. They immediately headed to the scene to help. With the nearest armed unit five minutes away, the pair took the brave decision to enter the church in a bid to help Sir David and contain the suspect. The officers only had their police batons and incapacitant spray for protection.
Whole-life sentence for murder PC James said: “No-one knew if there were any other members of the public inside with the attacker. At this point we knew there was no option other than for Ryan and I to go inside without taser or firearms support. “We couldn’t stand outside if there was a chance other
people were getting attacked and we also wanted to get paramedics inside the building as soon as possible to save Sir David. “Our biggest fear that day was that there were other defenceless people inside with Sir David waiting for the police to come through the door – so any fears we had were put to one side.” Ali Harbi Ali was given a whole-life sentence for Sir David’s murder. Reflecting on their actions that day, both constables are modest about their heroism.
"We only wish we could have done more" PC Curtis said: “We are not heroes - we did what any other officer would have that day. We only wish we could have done more and we continue to think of both Sir David and his family.” Essex Police’s Chief Constable BJ Harrington said, “Ryan and Scott represent everything that is remarkable about the officers of our great force. “They are the embodiment of what it means to protect and serve the people of our great county and it is testament to their courage that I awarded them the very rare Merit Star accolade. “They are a credit to themselves, Essex Police, their friends and family and indeed to British policing.”

Warm Halloumi, pea and rocket salad Ingredients Serves 4 200g quinoa mix (white red and black)

s the evenings get longer, its lovely to have a quick supper. The halloumi and peas are lovely and it’s a healthy option if you use the quinoa. Enjoy!
200g frozen petit pois, defrosted
1 lemon, zest of half and juice of all
2 ½ tbsp extra virgin olive oil
250g pack halloumi Small bag of watercress
spinach and rocket salad leaves
40g pistachios, shelled and chopped
Handful of fresh mint leaves, chopped
1 red chilli, deseeded and sliced, optional

Cook the quinoa according to the packet instruction using hot stock and not just boiling water. Add the peas with the hot stock and leave to stand. Cut the halloumi into 8 slices. Whisk the lemon zest and half the juice with the olive oil and season with salt pepper and sugar. Heat a non-stick frying pan until hot and fry the halloumi for 1-2 minutes each side until golden brown. To assemble, mix half of the salad leaves with the warm quinoa and peas then stir through the pistachios, mint and the dressing. Arrange on a platter and top with the halloumi and red chilli. Pile the remaining leaves on top and then squeeze over remaining lemon juice. Serve with some lovely warm bread.

Breaking up is hard to do Cheating
Kim, a mother of 4 came to see me a few years ago as her husband had been sexually involved with an escort and she was have difficulties dealing with this. Despite taking him back, Kim was not happy. She felt as if she was going with the flow for the sake of the children but remained angry and hurt she was cheated on and resented how well he got on with the children after what he did to her.

Other lies about where he was supposed to be and resentment that she felt trapped and had caused her to be on antidepressants. After therapy sessions to clear the above we worked with an acceptance that the incident had happened and that she was prepared to move on at least for the time being. This worked really well and she felt so much better and able to continue being off her “merry-go-round.”
Sadly after a year he cheated again so we worked with her emotions and especially moving on. Kim and the children have moved into a smaller house and I am delighted to say they are all much happier and she no longer needs to take anti-depressants.
