outhend-on-Sea is a great place to be. It has its faults, but as residents, we all know that in truth we are truly lucky to live here. Our sandy beaches are the envy of other seaside resorts, our cliffs gardens and other parks offer year-round pleasantries, our theatres play host to big-name musicians and comedians and the jewel in our crown - the longest pleasure pier in the world.

On October 7th we as a town have an opportunity to showcase why Southend-on-Sea is so great, as we play host to The Women’s Tour professional bike race. LOCAL ISSUES why can’t Southend United aspire to be a Premier League club? There are many in the Council and beyond that would scoff at such notions, I don’t.

The fact is that the only thing holding us back is ourselves.

Southend needs to change its tact

A healthier society is a happier society But beyond the positive economic arguments for hosting this event - is the social one. The Women’s Tour marks the first major event in years to come to Southend, and after Covid, I think we all deserve something we can all enjoy. The great thing of course about sport is that it crosses the age divide and now the next generation of young women and girls will get to see some of the greatest athletes of their generation go toe to toe right on their doorstep, there is no greater inspiration for them to take up the sport for themselves. Will the next Lizzie Deignan or Marianna Vos come from Southend-on-Sea? Anything is possible. But even if it doesn’t produce a world-class athlete it will inspire more people to take up cycling as a sport and also as a mode of transport, and in the modern world when obesity rates are soaring increased activity can only be a good thing. A healthier society is a happier society. 

We saw this after the 2012 Olympic games. So what should the legacy of the Women’s Tour be? My vision is a legacy Southend that isn’t afraid to bring these big events to the town, not just so we residents can enjoy them, but to showcase further what a great place Southend is. Why can’t Southend host an annual marathon, why can’t Thorpe Bay Tennis Club host a professional tournament, why can’t Garons be the venue of a nationally televised swimming competition, and

It would be too easy for us as a town to simply remember the Women’s Tour as simply a nice day out, it needs to be something bigger than that. It needs to act as a catalyst for more events in this town. We used to play host to the air show, we all saw what a buzz that created for the town and how many of us, including myself, look back with fond memories of it, but that is now gone and although we would love to see it return someday - that day is not in the immediate future.

Instead, Southend needs to change its tact and look at different events to offer to remain competitive with other Seaside towns. The Women’s Tour offers a potential alternative, a fun day out for the family, a showcase of what is great about our town and of course a chance to enjoy elite sport at its best. This not only extends our season, helping our local businesses, but also gives us an edge over other seaside towns, and if we do not keep ahead of those towns, we risk being left behind.

Our great town will bounce back I am truly proud of the part I have played in getting this event to come to Southend. I hope we can all get behind the Women’s Tour on October 7th and any future events that we host in Southend. The bigger impact this has, the more of a legacy it generates, the more our great town will bounce back from what has been a very hard few years for us all.

Southend included in City Status Bid!

P

arliament was due to return in September, but as a result of the crisis in Afghanistan Parliament was recalled. Having been a Member of Parliament when the original decision was made following 9/11 to get involved in Afghanistan, the way the allied troops have left the country has not played well. I and my team in Westminster are dealing with the many queries which have been raised by this event. The priorities are very much saving the lives of innocent civilians and animals while at the same time protecting our country from terrorist attacks.

Yes, it was a pity about the European Football Championship, but we do have the opportunity next year in Qatar - I am also the Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Qatar - to fly the flag again and perhaps bring home the trophy.

l Whilst the weather this summer hasn’t exactly been brilliant, I am very pleased that many traders have been able to open up again and that the leisure activities which Southend has to offer are once again being enjoyed by many people. l I am delighted to say that the local authority has given its blessing for the City Status bid and that a committee has been formed to develop ideas as to how we should approach our final submission which needs to be in by Christmas. I would be delighted to hear from any individuals or organisations with ideas and suggestions about the bid for City Status. l As Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Olympic 16

l It has been particularly satisfying to be out and about meeting people once again, for instance at Southend Hospital, not to mention the reopening of the wonderful Chalkwell Fair.

RECIPE Heat the oven to 180C / Fan 160c / Gas 4, line a 20-23 / 8-9inch spring clipped cake tin with baking parchment or you could make 6-8 individual ones using a push pan from Lakeland.

Put the butter, sugar and ground almonds in a food processor and pulse until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, spoon out half of the mixture into a bowl and set aside.

Add the flour and whizz again until a dough is formed. Tip the dough into the prepared tin or divide up to make individual ones. Press down the mixture with the back of a spoon or your fingers.

Bake for 20 minutes if making a large one or 15 minutes if making individual ones. Leave to cool for a few minutes.

t Is impossible not to do a blackberry recipe when the hedgerows are full in late summer.

The base is just half the crumble made into a dough and pressed into a tin. The filling has a mix of blackberries and plums which work well together along with cinnamon.

It is lovely with a cup of tea or coffee but to turn into a dessert you can make the sauce. Enjoy!

For the fruit

175g / 6oz fresh or frozen blackberries 300g / 10 ½ oz plums 25g / 1oz caster sugar ½ tsp cinnamon

For the blackberry sauce 250g /8 oz fresh or frozen blackberries 1-2tbsp caster sugar 1-2tsp lemon juice Greek yoghurt and cream to serve

To prepare the fruit remove the stones from the plums and cut into quarters or big. Mix even eighths if they are really together in a bowl with the blackberries and caster sugar and cinnamon and spoon over the shortbread base. To make the blackberry sauce place blackberries and sugar in a pan. Cook over a gentle heat until the sugar is dissolved and the blackberries soft.

Sieve to remove pips and taste, adding sugar and lemon juice to taste.
