A Key To Your Freedom W

hen I started at Brights Locksmiths as a young lad at the age of 14, car keys were completely different and very simple. Back then the stealing of cars was not as prominent as it is today, but as usual times change and thieves found it easier to start the car by removing the wires from the back of the switch and touching them together, known as 'hotwiring'.

As there were no physical locks on the car, they introduced steering deadlocks complete with switch. This gave the car a great deal of extra protection with more complex types of keys. Although this helped stop thieves stealing cars, this didn’t stop the owners losing their keys or snapping their car key in two in the lock.

Your car without keys When customers came into the shop for house keys, we would always ask them if they had a spare car key?

Almost half of the customers would say no but added that it was okay as they would never lose it! This we thought was down to the cost and therefore not worth the expense. I would suggest people think what their freedom is worth? Or how much money would you lose if you couldn’t use your car or van for work? Or how good is your car without its keys?

I have always had an interest in cutting keys for cars in all situations 6

whether it’s a spare or total loss of keys. This is an area in the trade that a lot of other competitors steered clear of due to the many different types of keys and the complexity of doing this type of work.

A small electronic device Back in the late 90’s there was a big problem with joy riding. Some of the younger generation thought it was cool to steal a car and take them for a ride, then dump them somewhere or burn them out. Something had to be done, so the Government called the manufacturers in one by one and told them they had to find a solution to the problem and from May 1994 the first cars came off the production line with a small electronic device

The number 1 security rule When you move into your new home, change the locks. This also applies when you buy a secondhand car make sure you only have the keys to start the car. This can be done by programming the only available keys into the car, thus stopping the old ones from starting the car.

Technology has moved on called a Transponder which was embedded into the key. This was an ingenious device, which acted as an immobilizer. Now the key was not just mechanical it was electrical as well. The transponders had to be fitted as standard on all cars but not on motorcycles, these came later in 2010.

Obviously, this created a challenging situation as we now could not provide keys to these types of cars! We could still cut the mechanical type of key but couldn't program the new type of key into the cars. These cars had to go back to the main dealer, and they had to change all the locks and then program them into the car. This could take up to 1-2 weeks for them to complete the works. Also, back then offering a courtesy car was quite rare.

We now have keyless keys (Proximity Keys) This technology is not the best in my opinion doing away with physical security and relying too much on electrical security. The Proximity Key is always sending out a signal looking for the car and the car is always looking for the key electronically, then if you boost the signal to travel further the car can be started and stolen unfortunately this is happening every day on a large scale. The way to prevent this is to stop your keys seeing your car electronically. You can buy small wallets that act as a Faraday cage which prevents the signal transmitting through the wallets.

Where will security for cars go from here? The future may see the new Biometric Vein Technology, based on everybody’s individual vein patterns in their hands ... only time will tell.

The Refining the Plan Options document represents the second stage of consultation in the Southend New Local Plan following previous consultation in 2019.

Comments and views made at this stage will help shape a Preferred Approach document which will be subject to further public consultation next year before the new Local Plan is finalised in 2023 for public consultation and then submitted to be examined by an independent inspector.

We must go through this process Cllr Ian Gilbert, leader of the council, said: “The new Local Plan will provide much greater certainty for communities, businesses and investors on where future development should go and the quality of development we will expect. Local Plans are a legal requirement and vital as they provide a framework for guiding decisions on individual planning applications. The Government has set out a Standard Methodology housing figure for

each Local Planning Authority area in the country. The Local Plan must seek to meet this and deliver the infrastructure, economic growth, jobs, new facilities, environmental protections, and clear and effective response to climate change that we will need alongside it” Cllr Carole Mulroney, cabinet member for environment and planning, said: “As a local council we must go through this process now to plan how we meet future housing and other development needs for all those in our community, including all those that currently struggle to find a home.

More sustainabe development “It will enable the Council to better manage development in a way that creates more sustainable development in the future, particularly given the ways we will need to adapt to climate change, improve the way we plan for our health and wellbeing, and take advantage of opportunities for economic growth as we seek to continue our recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Petrol versus Electric?

J

ust under two years ago I switched allegiances.

I parted with my trusted diesel motor and traded it in for a second-hand, fully electric Nisan Leaf. It was a daunting prospect at the time – where would I charge the car? How far could I drive? What happens if I run out of battery?

I am sure these are questions that readers who have also considered switching will have asked themselves, and why some people may be put off from making the switch to electric vehicles.

Official figures show that Southend is currently in the bottom 20% of local authorities for electric charging, with just 16 public charging points, only three of which are rapid charge.

Increase public access With the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles being phased out by 2030, we need to get on with “electrifying” our town, so that driving an electric vehicle is convenient for people, regardless of where they live or whether they 22

have access to a private driveway. I am therefore pleased that the Government has announced £1.3 billion for local authorities to build up their electric car charging infrastructure and increase public access in places like Southend.

Switch from diesel to electric This will accelerate the rollout of charging infrastructure, targeting support on rapid charge points, particularly on motorways and major roads to dash any anxiety around long journeys, as well as installing more on-street charge points near homes and workplaces to make charging as easy as refuelling a traditional petrol or diesel car.

All in all, I am pleased I made the switch from diesel to electric.

If you’re a keen watcher of televised sport, especially cycling, you may have come across an advert for Alpecin shampoo, in which members of the team the brand sponsors (rhetorically) ask why do they use it? Rather than admit the truth – that they’re paid to - they run their fingers through their rather interesting hairstyles and assure us, it’s because they want to keep their hair.

To be fair, I think we all do If you want to fight hair loss, there’s more you can do than buy a German shampoo. Ironically, some of the things you do routinely may be contributing to your hair’s downfall.

Literally. Not shampooing enough, or indeed, washing your hair too often.

It is worth consulting your hairdresser, who will be familiar with your hair type and general condition, but consider washing it just twice a week, but rinsing and conditioning it daily.

Also consider your diet. Cigarettes and alcohol aggravate hair loss because they restrict the blood vessels, thus reducing circulation and blood flow to the follicles. So, a balanced diet, rich in protein, vitamins and unsaturated oils will make a positive contribution to your hair’s vitality, along with the rest of you.

Avoiding stress is another key factor and while it is easier said than done, taking steps to minimise it will prevent further hair loss. This is because stress can cause hair to stop growing and actually begin to fall out. Not only that, the body’s immune system can be triggered to attack the hair follicles, resulting in hair loss.

You can combat stress by exercising frequently and combining this with decent amounts of rest.

Change your shampoo Finally, it is actually worth changing your shampoo. Look for products containing 1-2% ketoconazole and minoxidil. These inhibit the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes the hair follicles to shrink and eventually fall out. Minoxidil increases blood flow and nutrient uptake to the follicles, while ketoconazole blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

his is a really quick supper dish and great for a Friday night with friends as it ony takes 15 minutes to prepare and then in the oven for half an hour. I have cheated by using ready cooked rice but you can easily cook some plain Basmati in just 10 minutes. You can easily half it if only two of you and if you can’t get Pak choi replace with long-stem broccoli or asparagus. Enjoy!

13tbsp soy sauce or tamari- use tamari for gluten free 4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 20g root ginger, finely chopped or grated 8 chicken thigh fillets 2x200g packs pak choi, quartered 1 bunch spring onions, trimmed 1tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp sesame seeds 2x250g pouches pre-cooked rice (Tilda do some great flavours)

Meanwhile, mix together the soy, sweet chilli sauce and ginger in a large bowl. Add the chicken and toss to coat. Arrange the chicken on the preheated tray, reserving the sauce, and roast for 15 minutes.

Toss the pak choi and spring onions in the sesame oil. Nestle the pak choi and whole spring onions in between the chicken thighs and baste everything with the reserved sauce. Scatter with the sesame seeds and roast for 10 minutes or until everything is cooked through.

Heat the rice according to pack instructions and serve with the traybake, with any sauce from the tray drizzled over.

Nb If you want a little more dressing just mix together some more soy and sweet chilli sauce.
