Centre grows on former plant nursery

S

ituated on Sutton Road between Southend and Rochford a new garden centre has become Southend’s go to place for everything gardening.

Scotts of Southend was born when Scott Bird first viewed the 11 acre Reads of Sutton Ltd nursery in September 2017.

The previous owners the Read family, who had been in the nursery business for two generations had decided sell the business and retire. With his previous experience developing business’s in animal feeds and retail, and background in agriculture and horticulture “as soon as I drove into the site I could see the great potential of the nursery, the business that could be created and what it could offer to the local community, it was a light bulb moment” says Scott “I bought the business from the Read family on 6th April 2018”.

Further plans Since then Scott has invested into the infrastructure of the site, specialist staff have been recruited for their specialist knowledge of plants, gardening, animal nutrition and catering to satisfy the expertise required in each department.

From beginning as Reads Nursery selling only plants and a few bags of compost, Scott and the team have worked tirelessly 6

to create the garden centre as it is today with a vast array of plants of every size, variety and colour imaginable, garden furniture, houseplants, giftware, solar lighting and water features to name but a few of the newly stocked products.

Further plans are always in the pipeline to improve layouts and product ranges, the site is continuing to evolve, helping customers maintain and improve their gardens and outdoor living space. Over forty local people are now employed on a full or part time basis at Scotts Of Southend.

At Scotts, they boasts the biggest display of garden furniture, the most comprehensive range of soils composts and aggregates and the largest plant display you will find locally, with free onsite parking, the entire site is wheelchair friendly and dogs are welcome in most parts of the garden centre. There is lots to shout about.

tea and lite snacks and the facility to hold functions, whether it be taking mum out for lunch, a party or a wake, the restaurant has proved to be a roaring success. The homemade cakes, baked on the premises, being a specialty. All meals are prepared using fresh local ingredients wherever possible. In addition, the 120 seat outdoor “plant courtyard” seating area is where you can relax in the sunshine whilst having your meal. It is proving very popular during the warm summer afternoons. There is a comprehensive range of gluten free and vegan options, a kids menu and dogs are welcome in our outside dining area.

A range of feeds and bedding The plants team, led by Caroline Bradshaw, who, as well as looking after the plants on site, are there to offer free friendly advice on everything you need to know about which plants are most suitable for your requirements and the care of plants you purchase and already have in your garden.

control as well as our fantastic ranges of garden furniture and garden tools. The animal and pet food department, led by Kevin Stenhouse. Kevin also organizes the local delivery service offered at Scotts for those items that will not fit in your car.

Southend's heroic contribution to

World War II

H

ow Oracle helped John receive a personal invitation from Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall to meet them on 1st March, 2022.

John has written the book “A Grateful Nation Soon Forgot”. It is about Naval Control Service (NCS) operations in Southend 1939 – 1945. “Here at the gateway to the River Thames came together more merchant ships’ Masters and the greatest number of convoys sailed than ever in the history of the world”. 84,297 ships sailed from the end of Southend Pier in convoys. Southend’s immense contribution to the defence of the natiow in wartime was acknowledged by the great A. P. Herbert (Sir Alan Herbert) in a booklet he wrote for the then Southend Corporation at the end of the war. A friend of Winston Churchill he was part of NCS operations. AP believed that Southend Pier was deserving of the George Cross.

The book has taken time to complete due to John running a business full time.

Treasure trove of documents Back in 2011 Oracle printed an article at the end of which John requested anyone who had personal experience of NCS operations to make contact. The principal commander of NCS for 6 years was Captain John Pelham Champion, CBE., DSO, RN. A lady from Leigh-on-Sea contacted John to say that her sister Rita Barham had been Captain Champion’s secretary during the war. A visit to Rita Barham at her Norfolk home revealed a treasure trove of documents and memorabilia which together with extensive research, made the book possible.

LOCAL ISSUES Letters from Her Majesty's office A copy of the book was sent at the end of February to HM The Queen and Prince Charles because of royal naval connections. Prince Philip as a young officer aboard the destroyer HMS Wallace was a convoy escort on the deadly East Coast route from Scotland to Southend. Their Royal Highnesses were due to visit the town to bestow the honour of City Status. The night before their visit John received a phone call from Adam Tregonning the Mayor’s official at Porters requesting him to find John and extend a personal invitation to meet them on the pier at the unveiling of a new pier train bearing the name ‘Sir David Amess’. John says that Prince Charles and Camilla were charming and complimented him on the book. It has yet to be published but perhaps now with tacit royal approval that might happen. John has since received letters from both Her Majesty and Prince Charles’ office.

Queen’s Award for Enterprise (Innovation) 2022 It has been a good few weeks for John because his small business, Drivershields UK Limited is proud to announce they are to receive Her Majesty’s Grant of Appointment as winners of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise (Innovation) 2022. The Grant is presented by The Lord Lieutenant of Essex.

It will be followed in July at Buckingham Palace celebrating this most prestigious award. Nina Lee has been invited to attend on the company’s behalf.

Drivershields UK Limited supplies protection shields for drivers of passengers with a learning disability. The passengers need to be taken out into the community to assist their mental wellbeing and not in confined accommodation where they may become

anxious and fretful. However, transporting passengers with a learning disability puts the driver at immediate risk. There can be varied and unpredictable passenger behaviour. The least is disturbance to a driver’s concentration. At worst there can be physical harm.

In disability care homes there are often multiple drivers of a single vehicle requiring adjustability to suit each. A study was undertaken of the specific problems and risks for carer / drivers. This led to the design of a unique solution for providing fully adjustable screens customised to fit any vehicle.

Successful trials then led to application for a patent which was granted. The business now supplies across the mobility sector in the U.K. and abroad (particularly Scandinavia) for care home groups, families and Motability Scheme customers.

It is very satisfying to receive the gratitude of so many customers who write to us. Often they refer to the life changing experience of a loved one who for the first time has been safely transported with no risk to driver safety.

Are you running the risk of outliving your savings?

In a world of low interest rates, an unpredictable economy and increasing life expectancy, useful guidance on retirement planning is a necessity

hether you have just started out on life’s journey, or counting the days to retirement, pension planning should be high on your wealth management agenda.

However, you will have very different needs and objectives depending on which part of the journey you are on.

The earlier you start planning, the easier it will potentially be to create the retirement lifestyle you want. The stark reality is that the majority of us need to save more.

We all must accumulate more, when we are earning, to meet the extra costs of living longer. The decisions we make today will dictate the standard of living we will enjoy in retirement.

The golden rule is to determine exactly how much you are going to need in retirement – and to start planning for it now. Delays costs money but making worthwhile contributions need not be that difficult. Making pension contributions could be seen as a necessary expense: they should not be an afterthought.

Remember that making annual or single contributions has the possibility of buying into the market at the ‘wrong’ time. Monthly contributions help to smooth out the effect of fluctuations in unit prices. Those relying solely on the State Pension to see them through their later years will have to accept that their standard of living is going to drop significantly.

With people generally living longer, retirement now represents a far greater proportion of our lives than previously expected The State Pension provides a limited income (£175.20 for a single person, per week, based on a full NI record in the 2020/2021 tax year), which falls drastically short of what is really needed to fund a comfortable lifestyle.

So how do we avoid poverty in retirement? First, decide how large a fund you will need. One method is to

multiply your target retirement income by 25. For example, if you think you’ll need £30,000 a year, aim for a fund of £750,000.

Next, select the most appropriate investment vehicles to help achieve your goal. Property, investment bonds and ISAs have all proved popular over recent years but don’t offer the same degree of tax breaks as a pension.

To help avoid running out of money, selecting a balanced and welldiversified investment portfolio is critical, but knowing how much money to take from a drawdown policy is arguably of greater importance. There’s no better time like the present for you to consider how to enhance or protect your wealth whilst thinking about your retirement.

Community Building Together S t Vincent’s Centre, Southend is a project developed by St Vincent de Paul Society (England & Wales). The centre is situated in Short St, Southend.

Its aim is inspired by the message to love our neighbour as ourselves and is for individuals and families who are in any form of need to give them the hope and dignity they deserve.

St Vincent's is a centre that is trauma informed and person centred, this develops a sense of belonging where relationships are trusted. Through these relationships they aim to get to the core problems, identify and develop the best way forward. At the centre they have ‘On the Couch’ which is a relaxing environment where they get to know people. It is through getting to know people and giving them a sense of belonging which allows support to come naturally. They have a dedicated support worker that puts together plans when people are ready to move forward in their journey.

St Vincent's offers support The welcoming and non-judgemental approach really instils the core values of the centre which are Confidentiality, Respect, Compassion, Generosity, Accountability and Responsive. These 16

values help to build a strong foundation in people’s journey and encourages healing and positive steps forward.

St Vincent's partner with various groups and charities to help support people.

Some of the services that are offered at St Vincent’s Centre are, clothing support, free food bags, Food Market at a cost of £3.50 (More fresh food), furniture support for homes, individual grants for specific needs, psychotherapy support, free haircuts, befriending programme, health checks for pets, Nurse support, mental health programmes, refugee support and the opportunity to volunteer. It is important that St Vincent's offers support, and this leads to independence so that people can build resilience that allows them to bounce back when things get tough.

Currently, they are supporting local Ukrainian people who have come over on family visas. They are always open to food and clothing (Go to our Facebook St Vincent’s Southend for latest needs) and we also have a current JustGiving to support the Ukraine people in Southend.

Southend: Town Centre Team more than doubles in size

T

he team responsible for keeping the centre of Southend safe has more than doubled in size after nine additional officers joined.

The Town Centre Team was formed in 2019 to focus on the area from the top of the High Street and adjacent streets, including Warrior Square, down to the seafront and along Marine Parade.

Initially the team comprised of six PCs and one sergeant but that has now increased to 15 PCs and two sergeants.

Inspector Paul Hogben of the Community Policing Team explained why the public can now expect to see more officers in the central shopping and business district.

“Southend is one of the busiest seaside destinations in the country and since the easing of lockdown restrictions we have seen a rise in the footfall entering the centre of the city.

The city continues to be a safe place “As a result, we are increasing our presence to reassure the public and keep them safe. The centre and seafront have historically been our biggest crime hotspots, so we are dedicating more resources into the area where we expect to see the most disorder.”

The Town Centre Team will maintain a constant visible presence in the centre of Southend and will deal with anti-social behaviour, combat high-harm criminal activity such as robbery and knife possession, and deter the disorder associated with excessive alcohol consumption.

They will also be responsible for the Project Servator deployments where significant numbers of officers from a variety of policing teams conduct high-visibility patrols in specific areas of the city.

The Town Centre Team work closely with partners including the city council’s community safety officers and the local BID (Business Improvement District) Rangers who are both regularly involved in police deployments and are an invaluable source of information.

Despite the increased police presence in central Southend, Insp Hogben said the city continues to be a safe place to live and work and the public shouldn’t be concerned.

He said: “We don’t want people to be alarmed, we want people to get used to seeing uniformed officers. We’re not there because something bad has happened or we think it might, this is all about preventing crime, helping people and keeping them safe.”

What is it?

Cryotherapy is a type of skin treatment that uses liquid nitrogen to treat certain types of skin lesions by freezing them. It is most commonly used to treat:  actinic keratosis (an area of sundamaged skin, predominantly found on sun exposed parts of the body)  viral warts  seborrhoeic keratosis  other benign lesions  small skin cancers such as BCC (occasionally)  Bowen’s disease

What to expect Cryotherapy can be carried out during an out patient appointment. The liquid nitrogen is usually applied with a spray device. The procedure lasts a matter of seconds - the skin rapidly freezes and then takes a few minutes to thaw. It may take more than one treatment depending on size/thickness of the lesion.

Immediately after treatment the freezing site will probably be red and swollen, and it may sting and itch as it thaws. Expect the site to look worse over the next few days before it gets better. Swelling and/or blistering often develop within a couple of hours after treatment. 2-3 days after treatment a scab will probably form which should then take 7-10 days to fall off, leaving a pink smooth area.

Spinach, cream cheese and tomato quiche

L

ovely summery days to come and nothing nicer than a warm quiche and salad. There are so many varieties and this is made with cream cheese. Add bacon or chorizo if you don’t need to make it vegetarian. They can be wrapped up and taken on a picnic or to the beach. They will also freeze for up to a month, but probably won’t last that long. Enjoy!

Ingredients Serves 4-6 75g pack shortcrust 3

00g baby leaf spinach 2 ittle lemon juice L 00g cream cheese 3 2 large free range eggs reshly grated nutmeg, F to taste

Preheat the oven to 180c/fan 160/gas 4 and grease a 23cm/9in loose bottomed tart tin or make 4 individual tarts with 12cm tart tins Roll out the pastry on a floured work top and line your tin. Bake blind, by lining with baking parchment and either filling with ceramic baking beans or dry rice. Bake for 20 mins for a large and 12 minutes for small, then carefully remove the beans and put the pastry cases back in the oven for 5 minutes to cook the base.

Meanwhile heat a large frying pan and add the butter and once melted add the onion for about 10 minutes until just softening. Do not have the heat too high or it will brown. Add the garlic for a minute then all the spinach, most of the tomatoes and lemon juice. Cook for about 5 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Remove and leave to cool.

Mix the cream cheese eggs and nutmeg in a bowl and season well with salt and black pepper.

Make sure the spinach mixture is not too wet, you may need to squeeze a little of the fluid out, then add to the cheese mixture and stir to combine. Pour into your pastry case and place a few of your reserved tomatoes on top.

Bake for 25-30 minutes until nice and golden.

Serve warm or cold with dressed leaves and crusty bread.

During the last few years I have spoken to and helped numerous family members, friends and clients who had suffered a loss of someone they loved and each of them reacted differently.

Of course the way someone dies has a big impact. It doesn’t matter whether the death was as a result of a long illness or caused by a sudden accident the extent of grief they suffer will vary for each individual.

Getting Stuck in Grief The Stages of Death, Dying, Grief and Grieving There are a few different views on the stages of Grief and grieving from eminent Psychiatrists but the most accepted and followed stages are based on the work of Dr Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and her studying terminally ill patients.

For loved ones experiencing grief and grieving there is what is called a curve rather like an elongated ‘U’ that represents the normal grief process where the stages are referred to as: Resolution & Reorganisation Shock Seperation & Pain

When grieving people cannot move on they are usually stuck at the bottom of the Curve in ‘Despair’ and cannot move forward.

It is suggested that grief can take between 6 months and 4 years for people to move on with an average of about 2 years.

It is important that the person suffering from grief externalises their feelings and has support from family, friends or local support groups or contacts a therapist like me to help them move on.

Broken Heart Syndrome Many suffer from illnesses as a result of the shock of loosing a loved one.

This happened to a friend of mine. A few weeks ago she went to hospital twice thinking she was going to have a heart attack and die herself.

Tests showed that she had a chest infection, the infection cleared but her symptoms continued and her GP diagnosed her as having ‘Broken Heart Syndrome’.
