My interest in the future of Southend High Street has not dwindled and any article pushing the Council to improve our town centre is always welcome in the Oracle. What is Remap? Remap is known as the Charity that “Makes things possible”. We design and make bespoke equipment for people with disabilities to help them achieve greater independence and enjoyment of life's opportunities. When a commercially available product can’t be found, our ingenious Remap volunteers work directly with disabled individuals to create a solution which will specifically address their needs and their goal. We understand everyone’s needs are different, so we design and custom make equipment on a case-by-case basis. Essex South Remap operates within the SS postcode. All of our clients and volunteers live within this area. Our volunteers provide their expertise and time free of charge and we rely on donations and fundraising to buy the materials required to produce the bespoke equipment. LOCAL ISSUES are a problem solver, DIYer, hobbyist, craftsman, engineer, designer, inventor, or anything similar, and have a little time to spare, please get in touch. This is a volunteering role that can fit in with your lifestyle. Each person gives time as they see fit, for some, this is just a few hours a month. Projects are discussed and allocated based on the skill set and availability of our volunteers. Often one person takes responsibility for a project, other times volunteers work in pairs. All our volunteers know each other and help each other as we work through getting the best solution for our clients.
About the work Remap does Clients are often referred to us by Occupational Therapists, Physio Therapists or Care Workers, other clients self-refer or are referred by a family member. We work with all ages from babies to the very old, and all disabilities whether these are caused at birth or as a result of an illness or accident.
Example projects: A lovely lady, who ran a knitting circle, lost the use of her right arm due to a stoke and could no longer knit. Her daughter saw how much she missed her hobby and got in touch with Remap for help. Our volunteers designed a device to securely hold one knitting needle, making knitting with one hand possible. She now, once again, can enjoy knitting with her friends. We have helped several young children with various forms of dwarfism, our “little people” are a joy to work with, they all have a strong independent streak and know exactly what they want to do to. They just need some simple bespoke equipment to help them achieve the same things as their siblings and playmates! One very independent little girl simply wanted to sit at the family breakfast bar by herself. With nothing commercially available that fitted her needs, she had to sit in a high chair or be lifted on-and-off of stools with her legs left dangling. Remap made her a custom chair. Her mum explains: “It was so lovely to see how excited our daughter was! Remap had gone to the effort of asking what colour she liked, so when the chair arrived covered in pink butterflies, she was over the moon! erelict’, ‘Dire’, ‘Dull’, ‘Dangerous’. These are just some of the words used to describe Southend High Street. Some may disagree. But one thing all sides agree on - Southend High Stree is dying.
We have all seen the number of empty shops growing. Those that are not empty are often replaced with phone shops, charity shops or another coffee shop. Whilst there is nothing wrong with any of those, they are not the hallmarks of an exciting City Centre, with flocks of people, bustling boutique shops and big brands.
We must reverse that trend Many people are quick to say ‘Southend is not unique, the internet is killing the High Street across the Country.’ They’re not wrong. The trend of internet shopping has only exacerbated the problems our high streets face. However, on top of this Southend suffers from expensive parking charges, a dangerous reputation and a street scene which is predominately made of the colour grey. Of course, the Council has tried. It has recently spent thousands of pounds on the street scene. However, this has only amounted to changing one set of grey paving…to a different shade of grey paving. The fact is, people, do not want to go into Southend High Street. We must 16
reverse that trend. We must give a reason for people to want to go to the High Street in its own right. We need to continue with events such as luminocity but also look at ideas to improve the space such as the building of an amphitheatre, bringing in a big screen which can air events of significance, introducing green space and free parking, and of course ensuring that people feel safe.

Save Southend High Street We should start treating the High Street more akin to a public park. Encouraging people to come and enjoy the space, increasing the footfall, and turning Southend High Street into a great space that happens to have shops, rather than one that relies on them. From there you have an enjoyable space, but on top of that, you will see big and small businesses flourish due to an increase in footfall. I know everyone has their view on the High Street, and I would love to hear all of yours. But I think what we all agree on, it’s now or never to Save Southend High Street.

What is it? Cryotherapy is a type of skin treatment that uses liquid nitrogen to treat certain types of skin lesions by freezing them. What to expect Cryotherapy can be carried out during an out patient appointment. The liquid nitrogen is usually applied with a spray device. The procedure lasts a matter of seconds - the skin rapidly freezes and then takes a few minutes to thaw. It may take more than one treatment depending on size/thickness of the lesion. Immediately after treatment the freezing site will probably be red and swollen, and it may sting and itch as it thaws. Expect the site to look worse over the next few days before it gets better. Swelling and/or blistering often develop within a couple of hours after treatment. 2-3 days after treatment a scab will probably form which should then take 7-10 days to fall off, leaving a pink smooth area.

Anna fights to make Southend Safer!
S
outhend must be a safe place for us all to live, work and visit. But too often we have to put up with appalling violence and anti-social behaviour. Youths fighting in broad daylight with large knives is, quite simply, unacceptable.
Getting knives off our streets and tackling anti-social behaviour is a major challenge and there is no magic fix, but there are some things we can and must do right NOW. Firstly, we must back the work of our excellent local Pub Watch scheme that shares much needed intelligence between the Police and other pubs, as well as a co-ordinated campaign to stop repeat offenders from accessing licenced premises. Secondly, we must get enhanced CCTV in crime hotspots and I am fighting for this to happen.
Better equipment Most importantly, we must make sure we have enough police officers on our streets and that they have the equipment they need to make our streets safer. Last year Southend Police ran a very successful summer operation called Operation Union and I am pleased that this is being repeated through the summer holiday period. However, we must ensure our police
have better equipment to detect offensive weapons and take them off individuals before they have the chance to use them and cause injury.
Cheaper and more effective I am working hard to secure the funding and supply of new stateof-the-art electronic knife-poles for our local police. This full-body scan system is completely portable, takes up very little space and is cheaper and more effective than the 20-year-old knife-arch systems that have been used before. It has also been trialled successfully in other parts of the Country. I have repeatedly contacted the Chief Constable of Essex Police, the Essex Police Crime Commissioner, and the Southend District Commander at Essex Police to get some movement on this issue, but still nothing has been done. Making Southend West safer is my top priority, and I will not allow this issue to drop nor allow violence to go unchallenged in our community.

Deterring and disrupting criminal activity in Southend

fficers in Southend have begun carrying out regular Project Servator deployments in the city, providing a highly visible deterrent to anyone intent on committing crime. Project Servator is a national initiative to detect, deter and disrupt criminal activity.
The same deployments are used at Stansted Airport, Lakeside and in Colchester, and can take place at any time of the day or night.
Groups of uniformed and plain clothes officers have been given specialist training to spot signs that people are planning to commit crime. They have been stationed on the seafront and in areas off the High Street to provide a significant presence in areas popular with residents and day-trippers.
He said: “The aim of Project Servator is to reduce crime, increase the visible policing presence and reassure the community.
They were also recently followed by BBC News as they carried out Servator duties in Old Leigh and outside Adventure Island.

You don’t need to be trained to notice something out of the ordinary.”

he summer music festival season is now firmly underway and I can guarantee that somewhere in virtually every crowd there will be at least one gentleman sporting a particular type of haircut – the Wellend. Inspired by the so-called mod style of a blunt, almost non-existent fringe and feather bangs at the sides, it is especially favoured by devotees of the Modfather himself, Paul Weller. However, fans of Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene and other such dad rock bands have also adopted the look. Including Liam Gallagher himself at one point.

Marie’s Story
R
ecently I had a beautiful young lady, come to see me for help. She explained that after leaving Uni there were no jobs available so she had been out of work for many months.
Having undertaking a job under a government scheme she then secured a full time position and had been working at her new job for a few months, successfully completing her 3 month probation and was due for a wage increase. However she had noticed that her boss had a sarcastic sense of humour and could be moody. Within a short time, he began to make inappropriate comments about what and how much she ate and drank and that she should join a gym.
'Work related stress' As a result Marie didn’t want to go into the office and became emotionally and physically run down as the negative comments increased. A month later she was called into the office and told that she was being made redundant as her boss had decided that he no longer needed anyone to undertake the social media work. She was told that she needed to to work a 4 week notice. A few days later, however a sign was placed in the window of the office essentially advertising what was her

role. Naturally really upset her and she was made to show candidates round when they attended for interview. Marie worked for two weeks but the atmosphere and comments became intolerable. She became very unwell and her GP signed her off work with ‘work related stress” for her last two weeks.
Bullying in the work place is very common I initially advised Marie to see an employment solicitor as she may have a claim for unfair dismissal for the bullying treatment which she was considering. I worked with Marie on her anger and sadness as a result of the bullying treatment and then we did further work on her self esteem, confidence and not feeling good enough. In a small pan, stir together the custard powder and 2 tbsp milk until smooth. Stir in the remaining 70ml milk, plus the clotted cream (including the buttery crust) and vanilla. Set the pan over a medium heat and bring to the boil, whisking all the time (about 3 minutes).

Once thickened and the first bubbles pop to the
surface, take the pan off the heat and scrape the custard into a large mixing bowl. Pour in the condensed milk, stir, cover and leave to cool to room temperature.

Have a 900g loaf tin, or similar-sized freezer proof container, ready. A good tip is to line a plastic container with clingfilm. Pour the whipping

cream into the custard. Using electric beaters, whisk until the custard is thick and aerated but not stiff. Spoon into the container, then cover and freeze for at least 6 hours or ideally overnight, until firm right to the middle. Leave at room temperature to soften for 10 minutes. Slice and serve sandwiched between wafers or scoop into cones, if liked.
