recently in the Leigh Broadway were, (if we can salvage anything out of them) not random. Gang on gang. But the innocent bystander suffers also, as do local businesses. Parents are concerned about their teenagers stepping out, older people worry about going out for a meal and police, who so desperately want to stem this behaviour as quickly and as peacefully as possible, are pushed to the limit. This is why we created Enough is Enough Leigh-on-Sea – to bring together those of us who care deeply, not just about the town, but our young people, the image we portray to the world and our place in a country that still has values to live up to. In its first few days Enough is Enough attracted hundreds of Leigh people who care and want to help. Many had suggestions, some will work, some won’t, and we have to be guided by the Police in terms of what is permissible and practical. We know they are underresourced and the pandemic has made that worse, but we need to be working alongside them in our families, businesses and social contacts to set the example of how a community still can be. The closure of the police station We need to make the unfashionable (for the young), fashionable and we need to have a respectful partnership within the town between the police and people (in whatever capacity or age). One of the most significant changes of the past few years was the closure of the police station in Elm Road. It sits idle but still under police control. It doesn’t have to be an all-singing, all-dancing station but it does need to 10

be used (and be open to the public). A place people can go for advice, not just from the police but perhaps Borough Council officers, CAB and other agencies. Sign our petition For those that want to help there is one tangible thing we can all do. We can lobby the newly re-elected Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, our MP, the Chief Constable and the Home Secretary to get our police station back and operational, if on a smaller scale. If nothing else it is a criminal waste of an historic building. lived in Southend for all my life and run a local business, but because I very much care about the town I decided I would get involved with the local council. Like most people I used to go along every year to vote because I feel that democracy is fundamentally important, and we should all exercise our right to vote. Like many I did not fully understand how the system works and it is now apparent since I got involved, that many people locally do not understand the system either, with regards to local versus national politics. The Independent’s are very well established now in Southend. but people still go out and vote by a colour be that blue, red, yellow, or green however there is alternative, and I do not believe that local politics as opposed to national politics should be governed by party politics. Therefore, I decided to stand as an Independent, and it has been a fantastic experience so far. I'm having a great learning experience seeing how the parties operate and

how they can prevent good things happening in Southend because of their party politics, block voting and using whipping of their party colleagues therefore preventing the business of Southend being done efficiently. Right thing to do

What is fundamental for all of us to understand is that the local council deals with all things that happen outside your front door be that refuse collection, street cleaning, street lighting, community safety, local schools and so on. These are important issues but really are nothing to do with national politics. I I'm very happy that I made the decision to stand as an Independent and become an Independent councillor because I know it's the right thing to do in terms of local politics. I now have the experience to say without doubt that party politics undermines our local democracy and is a drag on getting things done in an efficient way. For example, in the recent local elections there were many things said that were 

by giving you false information, but this is commonplace in the way that political parties are expressing or sharing information these days. Loyalty only to their party I personally I have no party allegiance, I just say it as it is, and I believe that is the way it should always be. I only have allegiance to the people of Southend. The fundamental challenge here and the thing that I would like you all to think about is that whichever party politician comes to your door during an election, whatever they promise you, if they get elected their loyalty is to their party and not you or Southend. I do not think about matters from a right-wing or left-wing aspect, I think about it from a perspective of whether it is right for Southend.

How the council works Having explained these fundamentals, the next biggest thing that has become apparent to me is how many people do not actually understand how the council works in terms of its democracy, and simply vote the colour of a party as they would in national politics because they do not understand what happens locally. I get repeatedly asked in an election what happened to the person I voted for last year. When someone gets elected, they are elected for four-year term. There are 51 elected councillors with three councillors per ward, a ward is an area where you live, there are 17 wards within Southend.

When a local election is called, which normally occurs on the 1st Thursday in May, we elect one councillor from each ward, in other words, we re-elect in thirds.

Majority rules! In any election, if one party or group gets a majority of 26 councillors then they take control for one year or until the next election.

This means then that when you go out to vote in the local election you are voting for one of your 3 councillors, then if successful they get a four-year term, the other two have already been elected for their remaining term. So, if you wonder why a particular person you voted for is not up for election, or you think they may have been booted out, it's simply because they are not up for election on that particular year. We have a fallow/rest year every fourth year.

Currently Southend has no overall control and is not dominated by any one party, it is a mixture of parties working together which leaves the Independent’s in a very influential position. I feel this is great because I do not want any political party dominating your local democracy, National Party politics have got nothing whatsoever to do with Southend. I would like to see everybody working together in a mature fashion for the good of Southend.

Vaccine success T

he coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on all our lives. The world and our country were not prepared for what has happened since the virus first appeared. Behind the numbers of deaths and hospitalisations there has been real human suﬀering and I more than understand what people have been going through during this period.

The vaccination programme, which has been organised brilliantly locally, has been so successful that there is now a strategy for us all to return to some sort of normality. I very much thank the army of local volunteers and NHS staff for their part in this success. I will continue to do everything that I possibly can to help people with their many and various problems, whether it be the viability of their business, health issues or education – the list is endless. The Government has given large sums of money to Southend Borough Council to distribute to local businesses

in the form of grants, subject to certain criteria. Businesses who are having difficulty accessing these funds should contact me. The present strategy has not worked I have been horrified by the outbreak of violent crime involving knives and disorderly behaviour generally, which has invariably involved gangs and drug dealers. Unfortunately, the present strategy has not worked. Local residents are beside themselves with worry. I have asked for an urgent reassessment of how to address these issues which the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Chief Constable have already acted on.

Southend -alternative city of culture On a much brighter note, with The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee being celebrated next year, two national contests have been launched, one for the city of culture and the other for city status. Southend was already the alternative city of culture in 2017, which was so successful and great fun. This time areas bidding for city of culture can join together and I believe in our own area a Thames Estuary bid would be the obvious option and probably the least expensive. I have no doubt at all that we will have an army of groups and organisations locally who would want to get involved in such a bid. For the last ten years now I have been pressing for Southend to become a city. If you talk to cities who were once towns, they will explain at first-hand what the benefits are. It is not only a question of status and self-esteem, but in very real terms cities invariably attract investment much more easily – something which Southend badly needs as we struggle to recover from the pandemic. I do hope local residents and businesses will come forward with their ideas for these two bids and I look forward to the street parties for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Ingredients 3tbsp plain yoghurt 4cm piece fresh ginger, finely grated 2 tsp curry powder 4 large lamb leg steaks cut into cubes 1 tbsp sunflower oil 2 tsp black mustard seeds 2 medium carrots, coarsely grated Finely grated zest and juice of lime 100g cherry tomatoes, halved Small handful of coriander, chopped 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 4 round flatbreads, chapatis or pitta, to serve Tomato relish or chutney, optional

Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the mustard seeds and cook over a medium heat until they begin to pop. Remove from the heat and transfer to a large bowl. Stir in the carrots, lime zest and juice, tomatoes and coriander with the extra virgin olive oil. Season with salt pepper and a pinch of sugar. If you are not using the BBQ, preheat the grill to medium. Thread the lamb onto 4 skewers and lay on a baking tray lined with foil. Season and grill for 4-5 minutes, turning halfway so just cooked but juicy. Warm the flat breads briefly under the grill, spoon the carrot salad on top and then add the lamb and relish, if using. Roll up and eat.

Covid proves dementia care activity invaluable

Local charity, Essex Dementia Care (EDC) has recently carried out a survey to find out what impact their services have on the wellbeing of their clients, particularly in light of COVID-related restrictions. The results, they report, showed that a large number of those involved with EDC activities had a considerable deterioration in mental health when the support was stopped during lockdown.
