Since last month, the country has experienced the loss of its beloved monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. The television coverage of the funeral was exceptional. GRAHAM LONGLEY

As a former leader of the council myself it is very sad that one of my oldest colleagues from the 1980s, Graham Longley, passed away last month. Graham was a liberal councillor from the 1970s more or less all the way through until he retired from the council in 2015. He was leader of the council for a number of years during the 1990s and lead the liberal democrats following the merger with the SDP during this period.

Hewas a Southend boy through and through attending Fairfax High Secondary Modern school and had a number of jobs before finally training as a teacher in later years carrying out his duties with typical endeavour. In the early days Graham was a lifelong liberal and embraced the merger with the SDP in the late 1980s with typical enthusiasm. I remember him in political debates when he was a young liberal during the 1960s and he always took a very active part in those discussions. His political career came of age when he represented firstly Westborough Ward and then onto Eastwood some

years later where of course he took up residence and lived in the Ward for many years.

Graham was also an extremely keen devotee of Southend and his heart as well as his soul was entrenched in the progress of the town regardless of any prevailing circumstances at the time. He was an excellent committee chairman as well as leader of the group and leader of the council and did not shy away from any difficult decisions to make during his period in office in its various forms. He was always excellent at handling crisis, which obviously crop up from time to time during any administration. In

short, he was no shrinking violet. His summing up on major decisions to be taken as a committee chairman were always heartfelt and thoroughly understood. He never had occasion to waffle as he always knew his subject. His effort to save the Kursaal are well known to almost everyone in the town, and he was absolutely determined to save this iconic building. Many times, including this particular issue, he rode against senior council officers and very often would not take no for an answer, especially if he considered it to be in the public good. He never acted without consideration for his constituents regardless of political persuasion. He was always extremely purposeful in his activities and almost without exception achieving his desired goal on anything he put his mind to.

Graham was the best leader

Philip Miller of Adventure Island said it all by saying “in his opinion Graham was the best leader of the council he had experienced in his business career.” I echo that as a former liberal democrat leader myself and

Philip was and is absolutely right in his assessment. Graham’s heart was always in the right place and was not afraid to speak out even on the odd occasion if it was against his own party’s policies. He was however not always a team man but everyone, not only in the group but on the council, knew of his sincerity in all his remarks. Later, Graham joint Rotary and once again took part in most activities with great enthusiasm. He had many friends from various walks of life and well respected by all who knew him as a man of friendship, compassion, enthusiasm, and honesty.

It is an old cliché to say that Graham will be sadly missed but in this particular case it is absolutely true, and the city is poorer without him.

Graham was a keen supporter of Southend University Hospital and stood as a Trustee of Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation from 2016 until earlier this year. He was, also, an extremely valued member of the volunteer team that helped at the Charitable Foundation charity shop in Hamlet Court Road, taking his turn until only shortly before his death.

Dom Littlewood joins officers on patrol in Southend for BBC documentary series

Television presenter Dom Littlewood got an insight into what it takes to keep Southend safe during the holiday season for his new BBC One series Maximum Security.

Dom, who grew up in Southend, spent a day on patrol with officers from the city’s Community Police Team (CPT) and caught up with council CCTV operators, local business owners and security staff.

Throughout the summer, Operation Union has seen Essex Police working with partners in the British Transport Police, the fire service, city council, and business community to deter those who are intent on committing crime or anti-social behaviour from visiting Southend.

Since April, there has been a highly visible police presence on the seafront and officers have used tactics including the OpenGate knife detector, additional stop and search powers and dispersal orders to combat troublemakers.

Dom joined the outgoing Southend District Commander, Chief Inspector Ian Hughes, who said that the hot weather can dramatically increase the footfall along the seafront and “increases the chances of people wanting to be silly, and potentially commit crime". Ch Insp Hughes then explained how by working closely

with partners and sharing information in real time through the Townlink radio system, officers can respond rapidly and in numbers when there have been incidents or a change of atmosphere.

From there, Dom spent time with Adventure Island’s Philip Miller and security guard Steve who told him how they work with the police to keep the park trouble-free, before visiting the council’s CCTV control room.

Southend is covered by 207 CCTV cameras, and the operators are in constant contact with police to monitor suspicious behaviour and track individuals and groups who are believed to planning or have committed crime.

Acting Inspector Dave Gardiner was then Dom’s guide for the evening as he patrolled the city’s busy bars and pubs.

A/Insp Gardiner was forced to confiscate alcohol from a group who were illegally drinking on the street and then took Dom to an area off the High Street where a row between two groups of youths was quickly shut down by officers.

“We’ve got extra resources in the key locations during the warmer months in Southend for that exact reason. We are there on top of incidents as they take place and we’re preventing them from escalating,” said A/Insp Gardiner.

As the night drew to a close and the pubs started to empty, Dom said he though the Southend CPT were “doing a cracking job” and that he felt “safe as houses".

In Southend West we are lucky enough to have 30 schools, and I have been enjoying visiting each of them since I was elected. It has been a particular pleasure to meet staff and students and discuss their concerns and aspirations. This summer we saw some absolutely brilliant exam results, ably demonstrating the hard work and tenacious spirit of our young people and their teachers.

They need to keep their doors open

The last few years have seen our young people’s education seriously disrupted by Covid and school closures, and this year’s cohort were the first since 2019 to have taken in-person exams. It is

from reforms in post-16 education to ensuring adequate safeguarding and education for home-schooled pupils. This year, I want to ensure that the inspirational voices from our local schools in Southend West are heard by the Education Select Committee, so that the excellence that we see locally can be shared across the country.

Students are returning

At this time of year, students are returning to school and university, including to the wonderful University of Essex campus in Southend. As a mother of university students myself, I know first-hand the difficulties they have faced over the last couple of years, and I want to wish everyone very good luck in the new term.

How to yourmakesummer tan

Is your summer tan fading like your memories of those long, hot days back in August? I’m always saddened as those once neat tan lines and lovely brown hues begin to blur and return to what paint manufacturers might call ‘off white’.

It might sound counterintuitive, but exfoliating will prevent that post-holiday dullness that your skin often acquires. What’s more, melanin (the substance that actually makes your skin look tanned) isn't affected by scrubbing, as it's in your epidermis which isn't affected by scrubbing away dead skin cells. Exfoliating will also create an even surface for applying super-important moisturiser. Applying rich body butters, quality oils and lotions containing hyaluronic-acid will really nourish your skin. Similarly, keep using an after-sun lotion to hydrate your skin and do it daily.

Hot water can strip yous skin

Even though the outside temperatures are dropping, avoid taking hot showers. Again, it might sound a bit odd, but hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause it to dry out. A lower shower temperature will help to extend the life of your tan, prevent it from flaking and reduce your energy bill. I should add, that a moisturising shower gel will also contribute to keeping your skin soft and hydrated.

A safe and far cheaper way

Be sure to follow Christiano Ronaldo’s advice and ‘drink water’. Doing so will extend the longevity of your tan, as H2O keeps skin healthy, supple and, er, hydrated. Obvs.

Finally, fake it. Seriously. You’ve done all the hard work getting a base colour and fake tan looks so much better on naturally tanned skin. See it as a safe and far cheaper way of extending the life of your glow, than jetting off to Dubai or Barbados as winter draws ever closer.

There’s no set retirement age these days. Add to this the pressures of supporting both older and younger generations, and it’s clear a rethink is needed on how best to use your savings. To adapt to changing needs, you might need to consider other assets and income sources alongside your pension.

So what you have is a situation that’s both flexible and heavy on risk, whether you choose to dip into your pension pot or remain invested. Either way, you’ll need help and expertise to face the challenges. In retirement you’re also likely to encounter a new set of risks. For example, if you get off to a poor start when you begin drawing your income, with markets falling and returns negative, your investments will have to work much harder from the outset to maintain your desired income. Another layer of complexity in your retirement strategy is underestimating how long your money needs to last.The 100-year life is fast becoming normal, with more of us living much longer, more active lives than ever before.

We are our thoughts

On the whole, we tend to think negatively and have adopted this behaviour from our parents; but don’t blame them, as they learnt this from their parents.

When something goes wrong, almost instantly we think the worst will happen. We may lay awake at night saying to ourselves over again that if you think of the worst case scenario, any thing less will be a bonus. Then if the worst does in fact happen, we then say to ourselves, “I told you so”.

So, the negative thoughts continue and we think we are being kind to ourselves for thinking this way but, we are not. We continue to make ourselves miserable and unhappy, even to the point of feeling depressed.

We cannot help our thoughts but we can learn to control and teach ourselves to think positively.

Joyful, kindness and love

What many people do not realise is, when they are constantly in a negative state they are only attracting negative things, causing a vicious circle which is difficult to change.

Of course the negative thinking is a habit but it can be changed. I have many clients come to see me relaying their negative thoughts and emotions; I ask them, “how would you like to

feel instead”. They usually say “I just don’t want to be negative anymore” and I repeat “so how would you really like to feel instead” and they look at me bemused often saying “I don’t know what you mean?”.

So, I explain that they may want to feel happy, grateful, joyful, kindness and love. They usually say “yes of course” and we will work on this together.

I currently follow Dr David Hamilton, he writes such interesting books, articles, and blogs about what he calls ‘kindliness’. He is an international speaker in mind body connections.

Spaghetti Bolognese with Porcini and Italian sausage

by Judy Barden Mext month recipe: 'Teriyaki Salmon with stir-fried vegetables'

Spaghetti Bolognese arrived in the 1960’s and has now become one of our favourite family dishes. Everyone has their own twist and this one adds dried porcini mushrooms and Italian sausages (you want the ones with fennel seeds in) A few more ingredients than a basic spag bol but worth it. I always make a double batch and then freeze half. Enjoy!

Heat a drizzle of oil in a large non-stick frying pan and crumble in the mince and sausages. Spend a little while cooking the mince, you want it on a highish heat so that it sears rather than releasing liquid, and then eventually it will end up sizzling in its own fat. Continue stirring the mince until it becomes speckled with crisp brown bits.

Heat oven to 140C/120C fan/gas 2. While the mince is browning, heat a drizzle more oil in a large ovenproof casserole dish and sizzle the pancetta for 5 mins until it starts to brown and release its fat, then throw in the vegetables, basil and herbs, and finely crumble over the dried porcini. Cook gently for 5 mins until soft and starting to brown. Sprinkle over the sugar, then stir

in the tomato purée and splash in the fish sauce and vinegar. Simmer down until gloopy, then stir through the meat and pour in the milk and tomatoes. Rinse out the tomato tins with the wine and stir into the pan. Season, then nestle in the parmesan rind. Bring to a simmer, then cover and cook in the oven for 3 hrs.

When cooked, tip as many portions of Bolognese as you need into a sauté pan. Chill and freeze the rest in portions. Cook the pasta until al dente, then tong into the pan with a bit of the water and finish cooking with the sauce for 2 mins. Stir through the parmesan and a drizzle more olive oil. Twirl the pasta and Bolognese into bowls, scatter with basil and serve with more parmesan.

400g Italian pork sausages, skinned and broken up

200g smoked pancetta, chopped

1 onion, finely chopped

½ tsp Thai fish sauce

1 tbsp red wine vinegar

100ml whole milk

4 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes

200ml white wine

100g parmesan, grated, rind removed and kept
