Recently I was invited by Louise Gloyne, Head of Philanthropy, Grants and Partnerships, to a private visit at Havens Hospice. I knew I would be impressed but quite frankly when one thinks of a Hospice you would normally not associate it with feelings of calmness and happiness. The thought and care that has been planned to ensure patients and their families feel comfortable is incredible. Having been blown away by the visit, I asked Louise to share the wonderful facilities the new Hospice offers with Oracle’s readers.

HOW NO-FAULT DIVORCE COULD HELP YOU SEPARATE AMICABLY Leigh on Sea resident and family lawyer, Richard Abrahams, explains the biggest change to divorce laws in the past 50 years that comes into force on 6 April. The new “no-fault divorce” law means that separating couples will no longer have to apportion blame in order to be granted a divorce.

CURRENT LAW Separating couples have to prove one or more facts to show that their relationship has irretrievably broken down. The facts are: • unreasonable behaviour • adultery (in respect of a divorce) • desertion (for at least 2 years) • 2 years’ separation (with consent of both parties) • 5 years’ separation If one half of the couple disagrees with the divorce, they can contest it and potentially even prevent it.

NEW LAW 1. Divorce can be granted without blame and separating couples will no longer have to rely on one of the “five facts” to prove the ground for divorce.

2. Couples can apply for a divorce jointly and agree together that their relationship has irretrievably broken down.

3. There will be a minimum of 20 weeks between the application and conditional order to incorporate a ‘period of reflection’ to give couples an opportunity to work through their differences before committing to a divorce.

4. It will no longer be possible to contest a divorce to stop people from being forced to remain married to incompatible partners.

WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN FOR SEPARATING COUPLES? Couples can now make separation as amicable as possible. By removing the blame, you can avoid going to court, saving considerable time, costs and stress.

far more than just a Hospice W hilst ‘hospice’ is a word that can conjure up thoughts and feelings around death, Havens Hospices is trying to dispel those myths so it can provide more care for more people. Fair Havens originally opened its doors in 1983, in a converted house of Chalkwell Avenue, Since then, the hospice has cared for tens of thousands of local people from across Southend, Castle Point and Rochford, either within the In Patient Unit, through its Hospice at Home Service or other out-patient style services.

Family – and those people important to the patient – are integral to this care too. Countless loved ones have been supported both pre and post bereavement through counselling and group therapy sessions.

When Fair Havens moved to its new, £17.5 million purpose-built hospice in March 2020, the charity had big plans to expand its care for the community.

The first patient was admitted on 9th March, and two weeks later the Covid lockdown restrictions took hold.

However, despite the pandemic, Fair Havens continued providing care, both within the hospice and in the homes of patients who wanted to avoid going into hospital at the end of their life. In fact, demand for its Hospice at Home service increased by 40% during the first few months of the pandemic. In the first year of the hospice being opened, it actually cared for 80% more patients than the previous 12 months.

Garry Lowen's story

ONE OF THOSE PATIENTS IS GARRY LOWEN. Garry and his wife Penny run the Gleneagles Guesthouse in Southend, an 18-bedroom Victorian guesthouse and tearoom. The 63 year old chaired the Southend Carnival Association, Thorpe Bay Rotary Club and many mayoral charity committees, all of which have raised money for Havens Hospices at some point during his tenure.

IN APRIL 2021, GARRY WAS DIAGNOSED WITH MOTOR NEURON DISEASE, and turned to Fair Havens for support shortly afterwards. He has stayed at the hospices In Patient Unit in Prittlewell, and regularly visits the Hub – an outpatient-style service for various treatments, therapies and group activities.

GARRY SAYS, “IT WAS A HUGE SHOCK WHEN I WAS DIAGNOSED with motor neuron disease. We’d just spent 18 months trying to keep our business afloat, I'd also had COVID and I had nothing left in the tank to take the diagnosis. I was completely burnt out. I quickly decided that I needed to engage in services because it’s not only about me - it’s about my wife. Fair Havens came to see me and I wouldn’t be here today if they hadn’t. “THE SUPPORT I'VE HAD FROM FAIR HAVENS has been outstanding and has given me renewed confidence that I can still do things.

My legs and my hands might not be working but coming here has given me a huge amount of confidence in myself. I felt like I was a person with two heads when I was diagnosed and nobody would want to talk to me.

Fair Havens is definitely part of my care plan as my illness progresses. I’ve already discussed end of life and I'm confident that Fair Havens would meet my needs and I would feel very comfortable here.

“THE FIRST TIME I HAD A CHAT WITH THE DOCTOR AT FAIR HAVENS, they spent an hour listening to me tell my story which I'd never had before.

An hour with a Doctor who’s not looking at their watch! Since then I've had counselling and physiotherapy which have helped me enormously. Without Fair Havens I’d probably still be sitting in the chair at home, because I got to a point where I didn’t think there was anything I could do, but they’ve made me see that I can.

“I BECAME INVOLVED IN THE HOSPICE’S NATURE THROUGH THERAPY GROUP which has been a lifesaver for me. It’s given me something to look forward to, something where I can use my skills and my network of people to support us. We have a laugh together and support each other.

“I'VE BROUGHT IN THE ROTARY CLUB TO BUILD PLANTERS, I've had compost and tools delivered, and we’ve now got a plan of what we’re going to plant. It’s exciting to be involved at the beginning, something that will be a legacy for other people so when I can’t do it anymore, it’ll be in good shape so other patients at Fair Havens can take it forward.

“I WASN’T FRIGHTENED AT ALL ABOUT COMING TO THE HOSPICE. I understood that Fair Havens was as much about wellbeing as end of life.

I want to make the most of what time I've got and Fair Havens is enabling me to do that. I'm very grateful for what Fair Havens has done for me, and all my family and friends can see the difference.

“YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU’RE GOING TO NEED THE HELP of a hospice like Fair Havens. Hopefully you won’t, but the important thing is to support its work because otherwise there’ll be lots of people in the community who will not have a positive end of life experience.”

The Homelessness Picture in

M

y name is Jackie Bliss, and I’m the CEO of HARP, Southend’s leading homelessness charity. At HARP, we know that homelessness is a key concern of residents in the City of Southend-on-Sea. When I was invited to write this piece for the Oracle, I jumped at the opportunity to provide readers with an update on homelessness in Southend.

We have seen some excellent progress in reducing the numbers of people sleeping rough Southend in recent years. The official 2021 street count reported 10 people sleeping rough in the town in November. This is significantly down from the record 72 people estimated to be sleeping rough back in November 2017.

Despite this progress, residents still have understandable concerns, and we share their conviction that one person sleeping rough in our City is one too many.

Reliable support network An important question we get asked a lot at HARP is related to the origins of the people that use our services - many people wonder if homeless people in Southend are from the area originally, or from other areas in the country, or perhaps even from abroad.

Between April 2021 and the end of December 2021, of the total 874 clients who accessed our services, 91% were from Southend or Essex. 3% of our total clients were from London, and 6% were from elsewhere, which includes anywhere else in the UK, or further afield.

One of the key elements of success for our clients is having a reliable support network, such as friends and family.

That’s why when people from other

New Bluebird development in Southchurch Avenue Finally, I want to highlight HARP’s continued push to provide new housing solutions to help more local people overcome homelessness. One such project is our brand new Bluebird development in Southchurch Avenue.

Bluebird will house up to 50 formerly homeless clients and is particularly aimed at (although not exclusively available to) a younger demographic, whose needs are often not met by existing homelessness provisions.

We know that Bluebird has the power to change many hundreds of lives over the next decade and beyond, as people get the support they need to develop the skills to maintain a tenancy of their own in the wider community.

Police Watch

Tackling drug dealing in and around Southend

T

his month has seen the latest week of targeted action to disrupt County Lines drugs dealing. As part of this work, officers carried out warrants at addresses in Southend, Westcliff, Leigh-on-Sea and Shoeburyness.

Across the county, we made 49 arrests, seized almost £100,000 in cash and more than 1,100 prepared wraps of cocaine.

County Lines are run by organised criminal gangs who exploit the young and vulnerable and manipulate them into selling drugs.

The trade in illegal drugs is inextricably linked to violence and the proceeds fund other forms of criminality.

Preventing vulnerable people from becoming involved in drugs and the crimes associated with drugs is a force-wide priority and it is one we do not tackle alone.

Help and support is provided We work closely with partners in local authorities and the Essex Violence and Vulnerability Unit to ensure those people who may appear as perpetrators, but are in fact victims in their own right, are safeguarded and steered away from crime and drugs. The Serious Violence Unit has a dedicated

Gangs and County Lines Officer who works to ensure young people at risk of exploitation are identified and to ensure help and support is provided.

There are several signs to look out for that may indicate someone is involved in County Lines.

These include going missing and being found in unfamiliar areas, having money, new clothes or phones that they can’t explain how they paid for, being secretive about who they’re in contact with, or a significant change in their emotional or physical well-being.

Our message has been consistently clear; drugs and drug dealers are not welcome in our county

“The people who do this cause significant harm to our communities and we make no apology for pursuing them relentlessly.”

We must help the Ukrainian people and stand up for democracy

have been humbled by the huge generosity shown by local residents for the Ukrainian people affected by the unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine. Just as after the murder of Sir David last year, Southend has demonstrated what an exceptional community it is and how lucky we are to be a part of it.

I have been hugely impressed by the tireless efforts of local charities, the Leigh Community Centre and local restaurants such as Domowe Obiady U Babci, in collecting donations and raising awareness of we can all do to help. support Ukrainian families. I have raised everyone’s concerns with the Government, gaining assurances from the Home Secretary in the House of Commons that the visa system is fit for purpose. Move West Leigh Ward out of Southend West?

I have also been working on the pressing issue of the constituency boundaries. The Boundary Commission has put forward totally unacceptable proposals to move West Leigh Ward out of Southend West into Castle Point and move Eastwood and St Lawrence wards over to Southend East. The justification for this is to raise the marginally too low constituency population, but to change the map of the constituency so drastically is absurd. I argued in front of the Boundary

Commission in Southend last month that the communities of Southend West should stay within the same constituency boundaries and that we should simply incorporate the St Luke’s ward from Southend East to balance up the numbers.

The people of West Leigh will be much better served by remaining in the constituency they closely identify with and that better represents their interests.

RECIPE

Slow Roast Shoulder of lamb with Mashed Roots and Greens

by Judy Barden Next month: Halloumi, pea and rocket salad

T

his is a take on a Jamie Oliver recipe. Slow roast shoulder is an utterly delicious way to eat lamb. It takes about 4 hours but just falls off the bone once it is ready. Teamed here with mashed root vegetables and a lovely gravy with mint and capers (leave out the capers if you prefer). Enjoy!

Ingredients Serves 6

11 bunch of fresh rosemary 1 bulb of garlic 2 kg shoulder of lamb olive oil 500 g seasonal greens, such as  Savoy cabbage, cavolo nero or Spring greens

Mashed Root Veg

750 g potatoes 3 large carrots ½ a large swede 2 knobs of unsalted butter Gravy

1 tablespoon plain flour 500 ml lamb, chicken or vegetable  stock

2 heaped tablespoons baby capers 1 bunch of fresh mint 1-2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

Preheat the oven to 240c/220 fan/gas 9 Lay half the rosemary into the bottom of a high-sided roasting tray. Break up the garlic bulb, then scatter in half of the unpeeled cloves.

Slash the fat side of the lamb all over with a sharp knife, then rub with oil, sea salt and black pepper. Place into the tray, then scatter the remaining rosemary and garlic on top.

Tightly cover the tray with tin foil and place in the oven. Immediately turn the temperature down to 170°C/150fan/gas 3 and cook for around 4 hours – it’s done if you can pull the meat apart easily with two forks.

Meanwhile, peel the potatoes and chop into large chunks. Peel the carrots and swede, then chop into small chunks. Prep the greens by separating out the leaves and finely slicing any tougher stalks.

When the lamb is nearly cooked, put your potatoes, carrots and swede into a large pot of boiling salted water and boil hard for 20 minutes, or until tender.

Drain and allow to steam dry, then smash them up in the pan with a knob of butter.

Season with salt and white pepper. If you prefer a smooth texture, add some cooking water. Spoon into a bowl, cover

with tin foil and keep warm over a pan of simmering water until needed.

Once cooked to perfection, remove the lamb from the oven and place it on a chopping board. Cover with tin foil, then a tea towel, and leave to rest.

Put a large pan of salted water on to boil for your greens.

Pour away most of the fat from the roasting tray, discarding any bits of rosemary stalk. Put the tray on the hob over a medium heat and mix in the flour.

Pour in the stock, stirring and scraping all the sticky goodness from the bottom of the tray. Keep stirring until it thickens slightly. Drain, finely chop and add the capers, then turn the heat down and simmer for a few minutes.

Pick and finely chop the mint and add it to the sauce with the red wine vinegar at the last minute, then pour into a jug.

Place the greens and stalks into the pan of fast-boiling salted water and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, to just soften. Drain and toss with the remaining knob of butter and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Place everything in the middle of the table, and shred the lamb in front of your guests.

hy does our hair go grey?

Can severe stress really turn it white overnight?

While it is an inevitable part of the ageing process, what changes can you make to slow fading to grey?

As we age, our hair goes grey when the body produces less of the pigment, melanin. Air pockets replace melanin in the hair shaft, resulting in silvergrey hair. When this happens, varies a great deal and is down to genetics.

In most cases, greying hair occurring in someone in their twenties is more likely to be influenced by their genes, however stress, dietary issues, and health problems can be factors which can cause premature grey hair by lowering the production of pigment.

In extreme circumstances, it is believed that hair can suddenly turn white due to acute psychological stress.

The most famous case being that of Marie Antoinette, whose hair famously turned grey overnight prior to her going to the guillotine.

Making sure that your vitamin levels are topped up is a good start.

orgiveness is a difficult concept for many people. Many people who have been hurt either physically or emotionally by another person will feel bitterness anger, resentment and will want revenge against that person.

Forgiveness The majority will say that they will never forgive that person for hurting them, as they believe that by forgiving that person they are letting them off or condoning their behaviour without any recourse.

Together we worked on all the negative emotions she still felt for her father with wonderful results, but the hardest and most difficult area to deal with was taking that final step forward to forgive her father.

I have helped many clients that have been abused mentally and physically, cheated on, lied too, including victims of child abuse, let go and move on from the past.

We managed to work with Acceptance which really helped her but the sticking point was that she could not forgive him.

Anna’s story A few years ago I worked with a young woman who was suffering from anxiety, lacked confidence and self esteem, she didn’t like her image and thought that she was not good enough.

It transpired that her father was an alcoholic, who had committed suicide when she was a teenager he was physically and mentally abusing her mother for many years. She had a little sister who she adored and would hide with her when the father came home drunk from work and the ritual of shouting, destroying items and abusing her mother. He would destroy her toys and books that meant so much to her and she told me that she hated him, she felt anger, resentment, abandonment and felt unloved by him.

Forgiveness v’s Acceptance I explained to this young woman that she needed to forgive her father because forgiveness is to do with her not her father and by forgiving him she can totally set herself free from him, his behaviour and let him go.

Recently she returned and we worked with forgiveness, Anna tells me that she feels happier, lighter and free from her past and feels that she is enough and feels like a new person.
