Time for some horse sense S
outhend is defined by its relationship with the sea, but it is also bordered by picturesque rural villages, open countryside and big skies.
This creates frustration for motorists and I regularly see car drivers pull out to overtake cyclists as they approach a blind bend. This is dangerous for all concerned, but such incidents would be far fewer if there was better road sense The prospect of escaping the busy esplanade and town centre is a big draw for a multitude of applied by both parties. people; from dog-walkers to cyclists, couples and The increasing popularity of mass-participation families heading out for lunch in one of the many ‘Sportives’, such as the London to Southend Bike superb pubs to motor bike riders out for a blast. Another developing issue concerning people in The lasting ‘Wiggo Effect’ created by Sir Bradley rural communities is the fact that a fit, sports bike Wiggins’ success in last year’s Tour de France and rider can achieve speeds around and in excess of Olympics, plus Chris Froome’s victory this 30mph. Riding alone on thin tyres makes them summer, has seen an explosion in the MAMIL virtually silent, which has led to a number of population.‘Middle-Aged Men in Lycra’ make up serious incidents where horses have been the bulk of cyclists using rural roads at weekends spooked by a previously unseen and unheard and many appear to be living out a fantasy that cyclist. OCTOBER 2013
Similarly, modern cars tend to be much quieter – especially the burgeoning number of electric vehicles – and all too many motorists either confuse an advisory road sign or disregard it altogether. The national speed limit sign is a common sight in the country, but to drive at 60mph on some of the roads would be suicidal. Yet many do. The triangular sign depicting a horse and rider in silhouette appears to have no effect on slowing drivers and the recent awful accident on the A127, in which two escaped horses were killed as they grazed in the 50mph zone near Wickford, demonstrates that a section of the British public knows very little about horses and their behaviour. I must confess that one of my pet hates in and around Southend, are signs encouraging me to Think Bike! This irks me, as the bucolic idyll of sitting in my back garden in Barling watching the sun go down with a glass of wine, or walking my dogs through the fields near my home is regularly shattered by the sound of motor bikes being hammered around the nearby roads. This behaviour is encouraged by a potent mix of the performance capabilities of modern machinery, a lack of policing in rural areas and general ignorance of other people’s, or the individual’s own, safety.
I welcome people to the countryside and would encourage more to explore it and invest in the rural economy, but would urge greater consideration and responsibility. Mutual courtesy and care is essential. As is some foresight. Country lanes often have things you don’t see in the middle of town, such as tractors, horses, dog-walkers and groups of cyclists. All are entitled to share the road. My advice to motorists is to look ahead and prepare for the unexpected. On left-hand bends and on narrow lanes keep your speed DOWN. When you see a horse or cyclist, reduce your speed and give them plenty of room as you pass. Do not sound your horn or rev your engine as you approach a horse. They are powerful, heavy animals and can become scared by unexpected sights and sounds. A moment’s patience and good humour costs nothing and a cheery ‘thank you’ wave of the hand can not only make your day but may also save a life. by:

spend a large proportion of my working day discussing Elephant’s Breath, Mole’s Breath. Cat’s Paw, and Mouses Back with the occasional Dead Salmon. You would be excused for thinking I work in a zoo or that I am a qualified vet. However, you would be very wrong! My job is to help people create their vision of a beautiful home or place of work.
Fabulous new colours There are many of us out there that love to spend time pouring over images of fabulous interiors, studying paint charts and collecting little sample pots. If you are one of these kindred spirits you will be thrilled to learn that in the last month two of the biggest and best names in Interiors have launched a Fabulous selection of new colours to their already glorious array of paint colours.
neutral and grey is far from over and now we have an excuse to decorate another room. My personal favourites are Loft White and Inox from Little Greene and Mole’s Breath and Ammonite from Farrow & Ball. Tackling the neutrals is something most of us are confident enough to handle but what really creates the wow factor is when you add a flash of colour. If the thought of straying from neutral scares you then I would advise you start small . A cushion, candle or throw in a lovely bright jewel colour, a fashionably pretty pastel or a dramatic deep grey, blue or green will really give the room visual interest. By Samantha Gundy

One may assume ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,’ but a study conducted by the University of Westminster suggests that guys actually fact prefer brunettes. A woman visited three separate nightclubs with her hair dyed brunette, blonde, or red – she was approached the most as a blonde, second as brunette and least as a redhead. However when inquiries were made with men in those clubs, they said they found her more appealing overall as a brunette, saying she came across most attractive, clever-looking, approachable and dependable. They thought a redhead would be more temperamental and a blonde needy. Ouch! Blondes not necessarily preferred
Oracle Hair & Beauty
You’re an animal, baby, it’s in your nature
Such comments can be seen as mere stereotyping, but it was unusual to see that chaps, whether gents or not, really don’t prefer blondes. On the other hand, or paw, women of all hair types say they prefer men with dark hair - just like lionesses. Apparently, male lions possessing dark manes tend to be the pride leaders.
s Chloe Moretz stepped out of her limo and onto the red carpet at the Kick Ass 2 premiere in London she followed in the recent footsteps of Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Britney Spears and Scarlet Johansson, by dramatically changing her hair colour and again re-igniting the classic argument – blonde v brunette.
In 2011 a survey of 2000 British blokes discovered that almost a third said they preferred brunettes. When the same was research was conducted in other countries such as France, U.S., Spain, Italy and Brazil, the most preferred hair colour was black. What’s that about men marrying versions of their mums…?
10% of population is natural blonde
And the moral of my story is? In a world of 7 billion people, it's important to find yourself and simply be yourself, whether you are blonde, brunette or have sky blue and pink tresses, your hair colour is simply a trait, it is not who or what you are.
Psychologists tell us that women who are not naturally born blondes tend to go lighter because they want to stand out. And they succeed – because only 10% of the population is actually naturally blonde. But it seems that old stereotypes die hard, because in the recent financial hard times, we have seen more fair-haired and blonde women dying their hair dark in a bid to be seen as more professional, serious or, indeed, intelligent. 20

Caveat Emptor!* (*Buyer Beware!)
ype the words “car leasing” in to your chosen search engine, and you will find numerous suppliers offering every possible car or van, sometimes at prices much less than other suppliers, but are any of these offers actually genuine? The devil is in the detail Over recent months, I have seen internet leasing offers on vehicles that I know are impossible to honour. There is a finite amount of discount available on any vehicle, whatever it may be, so those more scrupulous suppliers can spot a bogus offer from a mile off. Various tricks may be employed, such as a very cheap headline rate boldly displayed, with the details of either a massive deposit or tiny annual mileage conspicuously absent. Unlike Hire Purchase, where regulation demands a full breakdown of charges and fees, leasing quotes have an in-built vagueness that can make deception easier for those who choose that path.
What to look for, what to avoid Judging the validity of any offer can often be difficult, but if a supplier has a consumer credit licence, or is approved by their local Trading Standards office, they are far less likely to be operating in an unscrupulous manner. Be sure to look out for BVRLA accreditation (British Vehicle Rental & Leasing Association) this proves the firm has been audited. The reluctance to provide a full, written quotation should start alarm bells ringing, as this may be an attempt to hide the true cost of a vehicle. Avoid any company which requires a deposit when the order is placed, as most vehicle funders take any advanced payments by direct debit just prior to delivery. Most importantly of all, don’t forget the old adage; if a deal looks too good to be true, it’s almost certainly is! Sponsored by
Who are you dealing with? A slick website doesn’t necessarily guarantee an honest brokerage, but a very basic site may hint at the type of organisation you may end up dealing with. A credit search of many of these suppliers show that they aren’t in too healthy a state, with several actually listed as non-trading! Will they even be there at the end of the first year of your agreement to remind you to service the vehicle?

Method: 1 Place the pears in a medium-size pan, add the granulated sugar and cook on a medium heat until the fruit starts to soften and releases its juices, about 10 mins. Add the blackberries and bring back to the boil, then remove from the heat. Spoon the fruity mixture into 4 individual ovenproof ramekins, or 1 large baking dish.
Pear and Blackberry Crumbles
rumbles are just one of the best quick desserts to make. You can use any variety of fruit all through the year. This is a classic replacing the usual apple with pear and this can be made in a large dish or individual portions. Useful to freeze in small ramekins and then just cook one as you need from frozen. Enjoy! Pear and Blackberry Crumbles Serves 4
2 Place the flour, butter and a pinch of salt in a large bowl and rub together with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Add the pistachios and demerara sugar, then stir to combine. 3 Sprinkle crumble evenly over the cooked fruit. This can be done up to 1 day ahead, or frozen for up to 1 month. Bake for 20-25 mins if small, 40 mins if large, until golden. If baking from frozen, add 15 mins cooking time. Remove from the oven, cool slightly, then serve with ice cream, custard or cream, if you like.

Need for Speed? S
peeding up your computer in three easy steps:
Step by step guide We are often asked why a fast PC you’ve just purchased slows down to a grinding halt a few months later. Thankfully, there is an easy answer and a means to keep it that way. Computers are like human beings in some respect. Some of us can relate to being asked question after question until we’ve eventually had enough and slow right down. What really happens is that the PC collects temporary files with the view that it can use these files later, plus they are close at hand. However, imagine your desk at work with the odd post-it note here and there? You’d find your reminder pretty quickly, right? What about later on when your desk has tens of thousands of post-it notes? Now find your clients telephone number! So how do we prevent it? Well, you can’t but you can alleviate it and here’s how. As a Microsoft Windows user you need to access the Disk Clean up utility from the programs menu. This is found from: Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Clean up The disk clean up takes a good look at your computer for you, so you don’t have to. The great
thing is that it only displays files that you can do without so you cannot accidently delete that important photo you’ve been saving… Your system will be scanned for old files that it may no longer require. If are sure you no longer require the contents of your Recycle Bin then it’s pretty safe to tick all the boxes. Once selected, simply click OK. You will be asked to confirm the deletion, so click OK.
After care Your PC is no longer bogged down with old files that it no longer refers to and the machines memory becomes a little more efficient. Our next two tips will make your surfing experienc a much faster and pleasurable experience on the internet. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG&KULVLVÀQGLQJWKDW his approach is a major
factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Are You Drinking Enough? W
e forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one’ Jacques Cousteau
Water plays a vital role in our health We all need a regular supply to maintain the best environment for our bodies to function. One of the biggest issues I come up against is people not drinking enough - so here are some excellent reasons to pick up a glass and get to the tap. Water can help you lose weight Water naturally suppresses the appetite and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits. Water helps to maintain good muscle tone Water is what gives muscles their natural ability to contract by preventing dehydration. It also helps to prevent the sagging skin that follows weight loss -shrinking cells are buoyed by water which plumps the skin and leaves it clear and healthy.
Keep it pure Believe it or not, humans are designed to drink water and nothing else. Alcohol, tea and coffee are diuretics and cause you to excrete more water, whilst fizzy drinks and fruit juices are high in sugar. The more of this stuff you drink, the more water you need to offset their dehydrating effect. So, how much water should you drink? The short answer is at least half your bodyweight (in pounds) in ounces of water per day (bodyweight in KG x 0.033 = minimum quantity of water to drink in litres per day). If you are exercising then it’s a good idea to add an extra litre to your daily intake. Good luck And remember I offer a free consultation to anyone who is looking to make positive changes to their health and fitness, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Strangely, drinking plenty of water is the best treatment for fluid retention When the body gets less water, it sees this as a threat to survival and begins to hold on to every drop and this manifests itself as swollen feet, legs and hands. The best way to overcome the problem of water retention is to give your body what it needs; plenty of water.
