Eating Indian food the healthy way I

ndian food is often portrayed as being very unhealthy and having large quantities of deep-fried dishes and breads or Poppadoms can sometimes seem to support these claims.

However, science is now beginning to realise the many important health values of the main ingredients of curry, a well produced one could be called sheer ‘health on a plate’.

The next time you go for an Indian there are a few simple things you can do to ensure you enjoy your meal, and still keep down those calories!

Before the meal, don’t have the Poppadoms, but have onion salad with the mango chutney of lime pickle. You can have the mint sauce, but been warned it’s made with fattening yoghurt.

For starters go for something that is cooked in the tandoor like chicken or lamb tikka, tandoori chicken or Shish kebab. Ask for it not to be glazed with oil, but with a bit of lemon juice.

When you have your main course, ask if they have healthy options of your favourite curries, if not go for something from the tandoori specials.

Avoid Naan bread and have either Tandoori Roti or a Chapatti, which is made from wholemeal flour and finish it with simple boiled rice.

Cumin – Antioxidant once again, having a beneficial effect on blood pressure and heart rhythm Ginger - High in vitamin C and a powerful anti-carcinogen. Also helps eliminate toxins from the body.

Fenugreek - High in Folic acid (very important for pregnant women) Garlic – Known to prevent Atherosclerosis.

Antibiotic, antifungal, bactericidal, lowers cholesterol and helps prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Onions – Helps prevent stomach cancers – ingredient Quercetin deactivates carcinogens and tumours and reduces high blood sugar levels and promotes ‘good’ cholesterol.

Tomatoes – Decreases risk of prostate cancer, the ingredient lycopene is a powerful antioxidant.

So next time you go for a curry, it’s probably one of the healthiest meals you have (as long as you leave out the sugar & cream!)

Here are some of the main ingredients in Indian food and their health benefits.

Chilli – An ingredient is Capsaicin and is known as a powerful pain killer and antioxidant helping to combat heart attack and stroke and even extends blood coagulation time. Capsaicin has an affinity for fat so it may well be helpful for weight control.

Coriander – Another antioxidant, countering blood pressure and formation of free radicals which trigger cancers.

How are you fixed?

Y

ou know the feeling: you’re driving and you need to check what’s happening behind you before you pull into the stream of traffic. You check the rear-view mirror, fine. You turn to look over your shoulder and realise you have to turn your whole body – your neck and shoulders have suddenly become fixed.

Sometimes this lack of flexibility is caused by a sedentary lifestyle, sometimes it can be caused through an injury, but commonly arthritis can be the culprit. Arthritic joints are painful and our natural instinct is to protect the joint by not moving it, but unfortunately the less you move these joints, the less you are able to move these joints because the synovial fluid lubricating them is not being stimulated. What stimulates production of this vital fluid? Yes, that’s right – movement!

And so the downward spiral into immobility develops. You move the joint less and less and it becomes tender or inflamed so you become more protective of it; your doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs or painkillers. You may even have to undergo x-rays to try to discover where the problem is originating.

And yet there’s a simple way to offset this lack

of flexibility with a course of gentle movement and stretching that has been around for hundreds of years and is now beginning to be recognised as a truly holistic, healthy, natural form of exercise.

Practising yoga brings a full range of movement into the joints and while some prefer the more energetic forms, there is a yoga style and a yoga class to suit everyone: from the 50-year-old who hasn’t exercised since school, to the 18-year-old who wants to improve muscle tone to the 70-year-old who wants to avoid a second knee arthroscopy.
