Stuck in the mud!

Politics is about priorities and when it comes to the transportation of soil to Gunners Park development, I don’t believe Southend-on-Sea City Council’s current administration has their priorities correct.

E

arlier this year, the council debated a motion opposing 85,000 truck moments going down Thorpe Hall Avenue and it was a motion that I voted for.

Concerns about the construction management plan couldn’t be resolved by refusing the planning application as the developer would have likely won on appeal at great cost to the council. That is why I backed the motion as it offered an opportunity to negotiate with the developer outside of the planning process and to come up with a better solution.

And so it was that in June this year, at a Place Scrutiny meeting, the Leader of the Council and the Cabinet Member for Highways, both boldly

claimed they could negotiate a new route by rail or sea.

That was not the extent of their bravado. No, they claimed that not only could they negotiate a new route by rail or sea, but that they would make the developer pay for everything and there would be no cost to the city at all. We were also told that an agreement would be reached by 30th June.

On all of those claims, they have failed.

It was not until late September that the result of their negotiations came to light and they failed to secure alternative transportation methods as promised.

LOCAL ISSUES Instead, they have negotiated and agreed a new route and fewer movements. On paper that sounds great but it is only logical to conclude that halving the movements means the lorries will need to carry double the load, or in short: much bigger lorries.

It also means that instead of avoiding the city centre and main tourist areas, the Conservative minority administration have agreed a route that will take these much bigger, soil-laden lorries along the A127, up Victoria Avenue, down the Queensway and along the seafront.

This plan will cause utter chaos and I am totally against it because I know the effect it will have on our seafront businesses and how it will clog up our roads. That is why Labour has set up a petition against this route and is calling on the council to share the burden. You can sign our petition at http://bit.ly/Lorries.

Views of the estuary spoiled These lorries will be thundering along our roads, leaving trails of dust and muck, for six days a week for two years!

Can you imagine the damage this will do to local businesses relying on visitors coming to Southend?

Who wants to stay at a seafront hotel or B&B that has whacking great lorries of soil rumbling past, leaving a trail of dust as you try to enjoy breakfast or a meal outside? Or have their views of the estuary spoiled by plumes of dust and noisy lorries?

It is an absurd suggestion to double the loads and direct the lorries through the busiest part of our road system. This will cause gridlock from Cuckoo Corner to the Kursaal. Victoria Avenue has 8 10

bus routes on it, so what effect will this have on commuters and local people trying to get into the city centre? The high street is suffering enough without putting people off going there because of gridlock.

We also do not believe the route is safe as where the lorries will enter Eastern Esplanade from Southchurch Avenue is a busy area for pedestrians and cyclists.

There are huge questions to answer on this and we are determined to have them.

The solution that works best As a councillor for St Laurence ward, no matter the route these lorries take, they will all go past my residents’ homes and businesses but I am determined that they won’t be punished twice by the Conservative’s proposed route. Putting all of those lorries down Victoria Avenue and along the seafront will affect our local economy, will damage our reputation with visitors, and overburden our already congested city centre.

The aim should be to keep movements away from our congested seafront and city centre and where the Conservative minority administration has failed, I will step in as Leader of the Labour Group to discuss with the developer a compromise that doesn’t concentrate the burden of these lorries in one area.

Our city needs the council to get the priorities right on this one and my Labour Group will fight for the solution that works best for the whole city.

he City of Southend-on-Sea has potential to become an important European Holiday Destination, thereby benefitting the Resort and its Visitors. Only 43 minutes by rail, from its Airport, to East London, even sooner arriving, at a Greater London Station, if the sleek, modern train stops at Romford, and with the unusual additional benefit of two separate lines from Central Southend to the Capital, Rail-wise, Southend is superbly placed to speed Airportlanding European Passengers, either straight to our salt-air wafting, Southend Victoria Terminus, in five minutes or swiftly, towards London.

By road, two major Arteries, the A127 or the A13 allow, off-peak journeys of well under an hour, to the beginning of Greater London and onwards.

By ship, well, there used to be the ‘Royal Daffodil’and ‘Sovereign’from Tower Pier and Gravesend to France and Kent. There has been nothing to speak of ,for years since, but how about a Water-Bus, like they have up at Tower Pier, for pleasure, business and commuting to say, Shoeburyness, South Shoebury, Golden Mile and Pier, Westcliff, Leigh, Thurrock and all jetties, further east?!

Additional methods of Transport

The open-top buses, along the Seafront, which they might extend, once again, to Shoeburyness and into Central Bus Station, I hope, are already, provenly, an excellent Tourist attraction. Now, let us welcome Tourists from abroad, with these

aforesaid kinds of waterborne innovations, too, of overtly Touristic yet promisingly practical, additional methods of Transport, through our newly-appointed City. And how about some tramways, which are so popular in iconic Resorts, like Blackpool and Ostend, maybe, linking in, with the bus and boat systems.

Obviously, much thought and feasibility planning would need to go into this, hopefully, without spending vast sums to conduct a study but I would suggest that Southend should accelerate being European-encouaging and orientated, thinking beyond attracting, just locally but arranging Charter flights or Tourist ships to the Pier or even Charter rail journeys, as well, both, from the Near-Continent or say Birmingham or the Midlands for British trippers and weekend and weekly stayers.

To cater for this, many issues would need to be addressed,that have

Standing up for Southend & Leigh-on-Sea at Party Conference

T

he Conservative Party Conference brought with it the ideal opportunity to represent Southend at a national scale, and saw me speak at four separate events. In addition to the highly welcome news about Southend United recently being saved from liquidation, I was pleased to bring attention to the issues surrounding the club at a panel discussing the White Paper on Football Governance.

I was joined by Sports Minister Stuart Andrew, Rakib Ehsan and Kevin Miles, the Chief Executive of the Football Supporters’ Association, and as a result I am writing with the Shrimpers Trust to Lucy Frazer, Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to highlight the vital importance of the new Regulator. Throughout I also identify my hopes for an agreement to ring-fence some monies, at all levels of the sport, in order to continue to develop grassroots outreach, youth work and apprenticeships. As these negotiations continue, it is vital that

the views of the fans are properly represented. Conference was also a fantastic opportunity to promote Southend-originating Emilie’s Law, my first Private Members’ Bill, at the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation event I hosted for World Farm Day.

Secure animal rights I know that many of my constituents are – rightly – concerned about animal welfare, and I was delighted to host an event attended by so many ministers discussing what more the Government can do to continue to secure animal rights in this country. In addition, I also participated in a robust panel on water quality, championing our excellent work in Southend as we work to continue to keep our waters safe and clean for us all to enjoy. It has been a wonderful Conference, and I truly look forward to putting Southend front-and-centre of my work.

Why the NHS is adopting LighterLife’s way of thinking

T

he obesity epidemic has spread around the world with more people being overweight than underweight. Obesity levels have rocketed from 1.5% in the 1960s to more than 25% today.

Throughout there have been decades of conflicting messages about how to lose weight and improve health.

VLCDs such as LighterLife’s TotalFast enable people to lose around a stone a month. People also see significant improvement in various metabolic measures such as glucose, insulin, blood lipids levels and blood pressure.

The success of trials such as DiRECT and DROPLET for weight reduction and remission of type 2 diabetes have led to the NHS recommending Very Low Calorie Diets (VLCDs) and Total Dietary Replacement (TDRs). A VLCD is when you only eat between 600-800 Calories a day. It’s almost impossible to do this with food and get all the nutrients you need, but with TotalFast food replacement plan, you can. For over 30 years, we’ve been promoting the benefits of VLCDs.

Working with the NHS We’ve presented and published our research, funded PhD students, lobbied governments and talked to the media. Finally, the reality of what a successful obesity treatment looks like is getting through. As a result, LighterLife’s combination of a VLCD with CBT Mindfulness work is now currently working with the NHS piloting the delivery of its Programme. Quite simply, there is not a more effective weight loss plan.

Police Watch v

Extra patrols for two anti-social behaviour hotspots

T

wo areas of Southend are benefitting from additional patrols by police and council officers after incidents of antisocial behaviour (ASB).

Patrol zones have been established in areas off Southchurch Road and Maple Square to provide residents with a highly visible presence after reports of drug offences, noise and nuisance activity.

Officers from Southend Community Policing Team and Southend-on-Sea City Council’s community safety officers will complete more than 3,000 hours of patrols and conduct dedicated nights of action in the next six months.

Essex’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner has invested £1.1m to combat ASB in eleven hotspot areas across the county.

ASB has fallen in the district of Southend by 35% in the last 12 months with 1,233 fewer offences recorded. Across Essex, ASB has fallen by more than 60% in six years.

T/Inspector Dave Gardiner of Southend CPT said the dedicated patrols would help to extinguish issues before they escalated: “Anti-social behaviour has a serious impact on the lives of victims. It’s not ‘low-level’ offending and if it’s not dealt with, it can escalate quickly and lead to other offending.

“In the zone that covers Southchurch Road, Christchurch Court and Christchurch Road, there have been issues with ASB from youths in the park, and in the low-rise flats that surrounded the park we have had reports of homeless people congregating, sex workers and drug-related ASB in the stairwells.

“In the area around Maple Square, there have also been ASB issues related to drugs and there are addresses in the zone that continue to be of interest to us.

“We work very closely with the council’s community safety team and will continue to provide a high-visibility presence to deter offending and reassure the community.

“The response locally has been very positive.

People like seeing officers on foot patrol and it’s a great opportunity for us to stop and engage with people, listen to their issues and also gain useful intelligence.

t The Sports Rehab Lab we treat a high volume of runners, and at this time of year with the London marathon slowly creeping up on us, We thought it would be a good time for us to share our do's and don't's when endurance running, and by endurance we mean anything over a mile!

Strength train. What this means is a full 45-60 minute routine, slowly burning every muscle group effectively. A great way to sensibly do so is with one of our personal trainers in The Lab, or if affordability is an issue, strength classes are also available and much cheaper than 1-2-1. Strength training is proven to reduce your risk of injury by up to 60%, well worth an hour a week!

Overtrain. If you run too much not only do you run the risk of hurting yourself, you also risk 'burnout.' This is a term referring to a literal feeling of the body shutting down not just with energy, but also immune system, appetite, and even sleep patterns. Very similar to most other things in life; too much of one thing can have consequences.

Mobilise. We would also suggest a weekly mobility routine. A really easy and convenient way to do this is by searching a "Full body mobility workout" on YouTube and finding one that is at least 30 minutes long.

Running can really stiffen the body as it doesn't require much range of movement, so to counter that and prevent issues in daily living, this is our answer.

Scrimp on calories. What we've found often in clinic is that those who start running for a hobby and get into big distances, don't balance that with increasing calorie intake.

Women above the age of 40 are particularly at risk in this as it can lead to falling into a RED-S category (Relative energy deficiency syndrome), and that can lead to a whole plethora of problems!

Chicken Liver Pate with Onion Marmalade

by Judy Barden Next month’s recipe: 'Lighter Chocolate Roulade' INGREDIENTS 250g chicken livers (soaked in milk for 10 minutes) 100g butter 1 medium onion 1 bouquet garni 1 clove garlic Salt and pepper 1 or 2 tbsp brandy 2 tblsp pistachio nuts, roughly chopped (optional) 1 tbsp fresh green peppercorns, roughly chopped (optional) For top: 50g butter 3 very small bay leaves

Finely chop the onion and garlic. Heat 25g of the butter in a pan and gently fry until soft and just turning colour.

Roughly chop the cleaned and soaked livers, add to the pan with the bouquet garni and seasoning and fry for about 3 minutes.

Add the remaining butter and brandy and turn heat up until it bubbles.

Put in food processor and whizz up. After it has been processed stir in the chopped pistachios and peppercorns, if using.

Transfer to a china or earthenware dish and smooth over the top. Melt the 50g butter and pour over the top. Garnish with bay leaves and put in the fridge to harden.

ONION MARMALADE Ingredients: 2 tbsp sunflower oil 800g onions, finely sliced 2 bay leaves ½ tsp salt ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper 75g caster sugar 50ml balsamic vinegar 100ml port or red wine

Heat the oil in a pan and add the onions and bay leaves. Cover and cook for 30 minutes until soft.

Remove the bay leaves and add the salt and pepper, add the sugar and allow it to dissolve. Increase the heat and bubble uncovered for 20-30 minutes to caramelise the onions. Add vinegar and port or wine, bring to the boil and simmer for another 30 minutes until the consistency of marmalade.

To get ahead: the pate can be made and kept in the fridge for up to 4 days. Store the marmalade in an airtight container and refrigerate To freeze: Double wrap the pate and freeze. Defrost overnight in the fridge Freeze the marmalade in a container and defrost when required.
