F

irstly, the last time I wrote in this publication I spoke about the 85,000 vehicle movements through our city. As a way of a short update, Southend Council passed an amended Conservative party motion which will empower us to fight these vehicle movements. Which I think you will all agree is great news.

Today however, I wish to talk to you about something more generic but possibly the most important thing we as a City need to discuss, but over many years have failed to - the future of our local economy.

I don't want to speak ill of the local economy we currently have. This publication alone is a testament that there are many businesses in Southend, and the surrounding area, doing well, with many success stories being found in these pages alone. It is true that there are many places in the UK with a far worse offering than our own.

But that does not mean that we can take it for granted, nor does it mean that improvements cannot be made. In fact as a Councillor the condition of our high streets and overall business offering are some of the most important things that residents raise.

Southend's Economy under attack!

It isn't difficult to see why. When Southend's businesses flourish we create more jobs, we improve how our city looks we encourage investment into our core infrastructure and of course, we are able to raise funds to pay for core public services.

However, Southend's economy is under attack. It isn't hard to see the impact those attacks are having. In the recent Southend Council budget the Council is now £2m a year worse off due to a

LOCAL ISSUES decrease in business rate income.

That is a significant amount of money, which in turn has resulted in the Labourled Council being forced to make cuts to some of the key public services. We also see the impact through the dereliction of our city's high street and the additional 5,000 people in Southend who have found themselves out of employment.

local businesses, which simply cannot compete with a publicly subsidised competition. This is all before we look at the lack of investment in our High Street, in community safety and in our core infrastructure which at times does not make Southend an attractive place to visit or do business.

We should help businesses

Do these attacks effect our economy?

Some of them are obvious, COVID, and the cost of living crisis caused by the war in Ukraine are just two International crises that have seen damaging effects locally as well.

Others however, are far more subtle. The dramatic increases in Parking charges over the last four years have scared off many people from coming to Southend choosing instead to go to other seaside resorts such as Clacton or Canvey due to their cheaper parking options. The yearon-year high increases in Council Tax and charges mean less money in people's pockets, and the publicly subsidised businesses scattered throughout the city undermine competition and hurt our

However, as I said at the beginning of this article I don't want to bash our economy. We have so much to offer here in Southend. An international airport, 2 train lines into London, gigabit broadband, a thriving cultural scene, and of course our wonderful seafront.

So what can we do to take advantage of these assets? Firstly, I think a holistic review is needed. Often in Southend Council, we see work being done in silos, the highways department talks to itself, the planning department talks to itself, and the economic recovery department talks to itself. Not since 2010 has there been a holistic, step back and look at the big picture, review of Southend and its economy. This means that decisions are being made based on guesses and piecemeal solutions. This has created problems far beyond economic ones and it is something that must be resolved.

On top of this we need to start selling Southend, not just as a place to visit but as a place to do business, thrive, and of course, succeed. But of course, none of this matters until Southend Council is able to understand that businesses are not the enemy, but rather part of the solution. We can't keep treating businesses and residents as cash cows, the loss of £2m in business rates is a tribute to that.

Instead, we should help businesses thrive because when they do jobs are created, investment in our city comes pouring in and through business rate retention our public services have more money to thrive.

ith the local elections coming up on Thursday 4th May, it is important that local residents are not only registered to vote, but also aware of new changes to the law regarding how people vote at a polling station.

here is now a second OpenGate weapons detector on the streets of Southend after the local business community donated one to the force. Southend Community Policing Team were the first in the country to use the £15,000 system, which is specifically designed to detect dense metal objects.

Southend: Second weapons detector for city after business community donation The OpenGate is more mobile and less conspicuous than a conventional knife arch and has popped up at locations across Southend including Marine Parade, the High Street, outside Southend Victoria and Southend Central train stations and by Adventure Island.

Stars Amusements’ operations director Nick Singer, Chinnerys’ Simon Patterson, Joan Tiney of the Borough Hotel and Suzanne Gloyne from the Southend Business Improvement District (BID) presented the OpenGate to Insp Paul Hogben and Sgt James Mint of Southend CPT at Circus Circus arcade.

Insp Hogben said: “The OpenGate has been a big success, so having an extra one gives us a far greater capability.

“Not only can we detect weapons, but by using our Project Servator tactics we’ve also recovered knives from people who’ve tried to avoid the OpenGate.

“We want to get those weapons off the streets and this is another tool to help us do that. If you come to Southend carrying weapons, you will be identified, searched and arrested.

“Our partnership with the local traders is crucial and we’re grateful for their generosity.

We’re working together to prevent disorder and make it a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone who comes here.

“We are tackling knife crime, being innovative in the way we work, and our officers will continue to be highly visible across the city.”

There are lots of security teams Nick Singer, who’s organisation runs many of Southend’s arcades and Kingpins bowling alley, added: “Everyone has been very generous and put their hands in their pockets to make this happen. It’s a really good team effort from local businesses and Southend BID. “This is a massive deterrent for anyone who thinks they can come to Southend carrying a weapon. It’s in everyone’s interest to have a safe city.

“There are lots of security teams along the seafront who are working together with the Community Safety Team and the police to keep people safe.

“We hope the teamwork between the local authorities, the police and the local traders continues.”

Easy Coffee Cake

INGREDIENTS 2 25ml vegetable oil, plus extra for  greasing 1 00g walnuts, roughly chopped,  plus extra to decorate 225g light brown soft sugar  1 tsp baking powder  ¼ tsp salt  225g plain flour  2 tbsp instant espresso, dissolved  in 1 tbsp boiling water 4 medium free-range eggs, beaten  For the icing  1 medium free-range egg  100g caster sugar  125g unsalted butter, softened  25g full-fat cream cheese  1 tsp coffee extract (I like Camp)  1 tsp instant espresso, dissolved  in 1 tsp boiling water 120g icing sugar 

Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. Grease and line the base of a 20cm loosebottomed cake tin with baking paper. For the cake mix, put the walnuts, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and plain flour in a mixing bowl and mix well with a metal spoon or balloon whisk.

Make a well in the centre and add the vegetable oil, espresso and beaten eggs, then mix thoroughly until you have a smooth batter.

Spoon the mix into the lined cake tin and bake for about 60 minutes, or until a skewer pushed into the centre comes out clean. Cover the top loosely with foil after 40 minutes if

it’s getting too brown. Once cooked, take out of the oven and put on a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes. Carefully remove from the cake tin and leave to cool completely on the rack.

While the cake is cooling, make the icing. Find a large heatproof mixing bowl that sits snugly on top of a medium saucepan to make a double boiler. Fill the pan halfway up with boiling water, making sure it doesn’t touch the bowl. Bring the water back to the boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer.

Put the egg and caster sugar in the mixing bowl and sit on top of the pan. Using an electric mixer, beat the sugar and egg

until thick and pale in colour – about 5 minutes. The beaters should leave a trail of mixture when lifted.

Whisk in the softened butter a little at a time, then add the cream cheese, coffee extract and liquid espresso. Sift in the icing sugar, then whisk it in at a lower speed until smooth. Cool and chill the icing for 2 hours, so it firms up.

Once the sponge has cooled, cut it in half through the centre, using a serrated knife. Spread a third of the icing on the bottom half of the sponge. Sandwich with the top half, then spread the rest of the icing all over the cake. Decorate with the extra chopped walnuts.

or devotees of the latest series of Great British Menu, a degree of nostalgia is almost certainly guaranteed when the competing chefs claim that their dish is inspired by an episode from a 70’s animation series, such as Paddington, The Clangers or Ivor the Engine.

Watching these shows formed part of our daily after-school rituals, along with such things as being sent to the shops with a note from your mum and wondering if you could get away with spending the change on a comic and some sweets.

The trick is simple enough One thing from this golden part of my childhood that still makes me slightly shudder, is the sight of my mum attaching a shower hose to the taps of the bathroom sink and summoning me to have my hair washed. I don’t know about you but I was never quite tall enough to comfortably invert my head over the rim, always making the experience rather painful.

When I saw the new trend to add volume to your hair by washing it upside down, I practically shuddered.

The trick is simple enough and, thankfully, can be attempted in the shower. Just flip your hair upside down and wash it in the otherwise usual way with shampoo and conditioner.

You and your hair are now ready For those of you didn’t grow up in the 70’s, my advice is to be mindful that water can go up your nose if you’re not careful and for the best effects, use the handheld attachment if your shower has one. How very old school!

I suspect that, post-shower, the next stage will really be the key to volumizing success. Blow dry your hair upside down until it is almost dry and finish by being upright. Adding a mousse or foam at this point will also help. Et voila, you and your hair are now ready for the 80’s!

How to change your thinking

C

hange is a necessity. It is important that we are able to change as life and situations alter by keeping up with technology and growth.

However, the reality is as we settle into a job or relationship and build behavioural patterns that we are comfortable with.

The more comfortable we are with our and stress. Over time these negative lives, the more safe and secure we feel feelings become patterns too and may and become. result in depression or illness.

So that when a situation arises that warrants change we find ourselves in great difficulty accepting anything which is not like our comfortable pattern.

Believability and Resistance

Your Mind is NOT in Control You Are! We have incredible intelligent and powerful minds that constantly respond to our words and thoughts.

The only thing we have control over is our current thoughts as old thoughts are in the past.

If you believe change is bad for you, you will be resistant to it.
