This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it. Thank you to all who attended the 84th Grand Conclave and who participated in the plenary session and the election process. We were welcomed by the City of Tampa and the State of Florida and left the City and State a better place than we found.

Brothers, you are to be commended for continuing to show the way. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., has a history of family and civic leadership. You showed up at the start of World War I when our Founder Brother Frank Coleman joined the military and was stationed at Des Moines, Iowa, with the 17th Provisional Training Regiment and rose to first lieutenant in 1917 while at the camp. We showed up when Omega men trained as Army pilots at Tuskegee Air Field during World War II. We showed up to provide leadership in the NAACP being a stanch legal advocate for the civil rights of colored people during the trying times of our quest for the unalienable rights guaranteed to all Americans in the Constitution of the United States. And we showed up most recently at the 84th Grand Conclave in Tampa at a

pivotal and most volatile political time in our recent history.

Let us continue to provide the leadership that has been our historic calling since those three undergraduates and their faculty advisor declared their intent to form this great Fraternity of like-minded college educated men. In the next two years, we have much more work to do. It is our aspiration to continue to build relationships that will strengthen our communities and the families and friends we care about and those who most need our help. Our school children need to know that they are not alone and that they have friends who will stand with them when they need us most. We must continue to pay attention to our health and well-being so that our families can stand and meet the challenges of an ever-evolving nation. Self-care is paramount!

Brothers, we have just completed the most successful and productive gathering of Omega men from around the world. Our 84th Grand Conclave continues to enjoy rave reviews which signals “onward and upward.” Let us continue our productive and prolific

journey of uplift and engagement! There is no reason that we cannot do more through our mandated programs to enhance the quality of our lives.

As we continue our scared journey toward upholding our cardinal principles, let us give particular attention to service to our families and friends by doing at least three things: increasing our family relations, stopping the school-to-prison pipeline, becoming fully engaged in strengthening our communities through civil involvement. These things we can do, in fact, in the coming days we will be communicating updates on where the fraternity is headed in terms of developing partnerships in each of our areas of emphasis.

As always, your voices are needed, your well-wishes are appreciated.

In Friendship, Ricky L. Lewis, 42nd Grand Basileus Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Since the first publication in 1919, the Oracle has chronicled the individual and collective expressions of our shared value system – a convention rooted in friendship, defined by a set of complementary and consequential cardinal principles, and measured by the extent of its usefulness to mankind.

A read of past Oracles is indeed an education in what is worthwhile. Because while I believe history is always watching, I consider it my job

and your job to manifest, document, and project the same Omega excellence.

I trust history will be pleased with what it sees and our inheritance will be paid forward! I am excited for the opportunity to tell the Omega story –your story.

How will you make your part of the Omega story worth reading?

“This Commemorative Edition brings to life the Visual Chronicle of the 84th Grand Conclave, capturing the essence of this historic event.” - Norm Senior, International Editor of the Oracle

Together, we came to Tampa and executed the plan we set forth with remarkable success. Your dedication and commitment were evident in every aspect of the Conclave, and it is this collective effort that made our goals achievable.

Greetings Brothers,

TMessage from the Executive Director

he last several months have been at the very least a whirlwind for Dear Omega. With the planning, execution, and review of the recent 84th Grand Conclave, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, our members were provided with a very clear understanding of why fellowship is the lifeblood of our Brotherhood.

Our “Conclave With A Purpose” in many ways is a reflection of the commitment we all have to the communities in which our chapters and families both abide and serve. These very communities depend upon us to keep our word and to be positive influences for those who call these neighborhoods home.

As we gathered in Tampa, Florida to navigate and facilitate the terrain of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity business, we did so, understanding the political challenges that not only abound throughout the state but across the country. Our Silent March which played out adjacent to the Tampa Convention Center’s waterfront brought hundreds of our Brothers together in unison sporting “I Am Black History” shirts with chants of “No Justice, No Peace!”

The assorted business meetings and plenary sessions in which we engaged, ushered in both new and modified Bylaws and Fraternal Constitutional changes that help to govern our organization. This Grand Conclave was accented by the reelection of incumbent candidates including 42nd Grand Basileus Brother Ricky L. Lewis and the election of new Grand Officers like 2nd Vice Grand Basileus Joshua Jenkins. Our unique ability to navigate the controlled chaos of candidate campaigns and come out on the other side as Brothers committed to the very specific work of Omega is nothing short of amazing.

Not to be overshadowed, our Youth Leadership Conference and STEM Program led engaging pre-conclave sessions that not only held the undivided attention of young people but also captured their imaginations concerning what their futures may hold. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the uplifting corporate sponsorship of giants like Amazon, Macy’s, JP Morgan Chase & Co., United Bank, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, US Army, Omega Life Membership Foundation, Genentech Pharmaceuticals, along with a starstudded listing of other committed supporters and partners.

As is my custom, I encourage you to continue to visit our website, www. oppf.org, to remain connected to and informed about all things Omega. Our very committed team continuously updates our website content with important information and beneficial resources. Additionally, we also encourage you to select the blue Help Desk Icon on the homepage of our website whenever you have lingering questions or resolved Fraternal issues.

Brothers, thank you again for all you do to make Omega the standard bearer for excellence through service.

Continue to stay safe…

June 26, 2024 - July 2, 2024 / Tampa, Florida

a Conclave with a Purpose

Reflecting on the 84th Grand Conclave of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Tampa, Florida. June 26 - July 2, 2024

Tampa Bay hosted the distinguished gentlemen of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., for our 84th Grand Conclave, marking a historic return to Florida after more than four decades. This event, the first in Florida since 1982, was the largest in the fraternity’s history.

With over 8,000 registered attendees and an overall estimated attendance of 20,000 to 25,000, the Conclave made a significant impact on the local economy. The event booked 12,000 room nights, showcasing Tampa Bay’s capacity to host such a large and diverse gathering.

Santiago C. Corrada, President and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay, highlighted the importance of this event, saying, “The Grand Conclave sends a strong signal about how prepared and welcoming Hillsborough County is to host diverse groups. We are proud to support this meaningful and historic gathering that stresses community engagement, social impact, and economic growth.”

Themed “Conclave with a Purpose,” this year’s event not only conducted the fraternity’s business but also focused on community-driven initiatives. Dallas Thompson, Special Assistant to Omega Psi Phi’s Grand Basileus Ricky Lewis, expressed gratitude for the city’s support, emphasizing the aim to provide tools to shape a more equitable future.

Key initiatives during the Conclave included Financial Empowerment, Voting Registration and Mobilization, Book Drives, a Youth Symposium, and a Community Forum. These efforts demonstrated the fraternity’s commitment to giving back to the Tampa Bay community.

Hillsborough County’s tourism industry saw record numbers, with the Tourist Development Tax collections and taxable hotel revenue reaching new heights. The strong performance in June, typically a slower month, was attributed to Tampa Bay’s appeal as a destination for large-scale conventions and meetings.

Corrada noted, “I can’t overstate how important conventions and meetings are to the local economy. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s Grand Conclave and other major conventions significantly contributed to our record-setting June.”

As Tampa Bay rolled out the purple and gold carpet, the 84th Grand Conclave of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., stood as a landmark event, celebrating history while making a significant impact on the community.

In this edition of The Oracle, we dive into a vibrant retrospective of the unforgettable projects, fellowship, and fun at the historic “Conclave with a Purpose.” Join us as we capture the essence of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.’s 84th Grand Conclave through stunning photography, showcasing the moments that made this event truly remarkable.

THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE EMPOWERING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

WEDNESDAY JUNE 26

The 23rd International Youth Leadership Conference (IYLC), a flagship event of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, was held during the 84th Grand Conclave in Tampa, Florida. This esteemed conference has a proud history of preceding the Dr. Moses C. Norman Sr. International Leadership Conference, or the Grand Conclave of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The 2024 IYLC, which “kicked off” the Grand Conclave, welcomed more than 150

high school-aged males, exceeding the conference’s typical capacity of 125 youth. Participants hailed from various regions of the United States and across the globe, converging in Tampa for a transformative experience focused on leadership development and personal growth.

Facilitated by Omega Men and other subject matter experts from diverse fields, the IYLC offered a series of free workshops designed

to address the unique challenges and opportunities faced by young males today. These workshops covered a broad spectrum of topics, including self-esteem enhancement, goal setting and academic success, health and wellness, Manhood 101, financial literacy, social and personal responsibility, civic engagement, family unity, and conflict resolution. In addition to leadership training, the conference included an enriching exploration of Black history throughout the city of Tampa. Participants visited significant historical sites, such as a local library named after Robert W. Saunders, Sr., Florida NAACP field secretary and Omega member, and the courthouse named for George Edgecombe, a prominent Omega man and member of the Pi Iota Chapter in Tampa. Bro. Fred Hearns,

a curator of Black history at the Tampa Bay History Center, highlighted the Fraternity’s deep roots in the community through the Pi Iota Chapter which has been active in the city since 1946. Through these activities, the IYLC aims to instill a profound appreciation for the struggles and achievements of past generations while inspiring participants to carry forward this legacy. While interacting with conference attendees and inquiring what interesting information they had learned, one remarked, “I’m learning more about our black history that we are really not taught in school.” Bro. Raymond Bell underscored the limitless potential of youth, noting, “What they are learning is going to have an even greater impact when they go home to their communities.”

Throughout history, one of the most damaging tactics in the attempt to alter the historical record is banning or destroying books. This has been true since antiquity. The Men of Omega have observed a very concerning trend in Florida, as well as in other parts of the country, where altering curriculums and banning books from academic discussions is becoming more and more aggressive and is an obvious attempt to whitewash history.

FROM THE DESK OF THE INTERNATIONAL RECLAMATION COMMITTEE

Brothers,

Staying active and financial while continuing to reach out and reclaim a brother on an annual basis continues to play a vital role in the life-cycle of our membership and fraternity. While the Reclamation committee at the international, district and local chapter levels are important, you individually and collectively are the most important aspect of Reclamation. As an active and financial member, you are the most important component of our brotherhood and your support plays a critical role in helping to make Reclamation a successful nationally mandated program. It is your individual level of commitment, ongoing support and active involvement, which directly impacts Omega’s overall success.

Every Brother had specific reasons for joining the fraternity. What was yours? Conversely, every nonfinancial Brother had specific reasons for not staying financial and enjoying the benefits of being a part of the greatest fraternal organization in the world. Ask one of our many

reclaimable Brothers, what’s your excuse for not being financial and staying actively involved? We understand that illness, hurt, disagreement, life/career changes or personal issues sometimes play major factors in a Brother’s decision not to stay financial, but let him know the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., needs all of its members, their commitment, financial support and active involvement.

For those Brothers unfinancial and reclaimable, reach out and let them know that there is a great opportunity to reconnect, to recommit and to re-engage and fellowship with men of similar high ideas and standards whose main reasons for joining the fraternity was to be part of an organization that is committed to brotherhood and friendship and who remains dedicated to promoting our Cardinal Principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift.

The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., is recognized world-wide for our commitment to providing unparalleled community service,

promoting educational enrichment, mentoring and providing scholarship opportunities, being politically involved, and serving as strong advocates for health and mental wellness. Understanding that every member is an integral part of the foundation of Omega and its initiatives, no Brother should take his financial membership or talents for granted.

Brothers, we still have a lot to accomplish as “Men of Omega” and the train continues to move forward. Are you on board? If so, stay financial and make it your personal commitment to reclaim as many unfinancial Brothers that you can. The larger our numbers, the bigger our voice. Let’s also continue to make Reclamation our most important nationally mandated program, a major priority and your personal commitment to “Each One Bring One.”

THE U.S. ARMY

AT THE 84TH GRAND CONCLAVE

The U.S. Army played a significant role as a major sponsor of the 84th International Grand Conclave, held in Tampa, Florida, from June 27-30, 2024. Throughout the event, Army representatives actively participated in various public engagements at the Tampa Convention Center, fostering connections and highlighting the importance of community and national service.

The Army kicked off its involvement with a Youth Leadership Conference and mentoring session, where they connected with around 200 junior high and high school students from across the country, including key recruiting areas in Florida. Representatives shared personal stories and emphasized the benefits of military service, covering roles from enlisted personnel to general officers. They also provided tailored information on ROTC opportunities, inspiring the next generation of leaders.

At the Welcome Reception hosted by the Grand Basileus, Army representatives interacted with Tampa community members, including legislative officials, Chamber of Commerce members, academics, and local business leaders. Conversations focused on the Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS) program, future outreach initiatives, and collaborative efforts to strengthen the talent pipeline in the region, particularly benefiting the Fraternity and the broader community.

The Army also hosted a Center of Influence (COI) event led by Dr. Lyle Hogue, Director of Army Strategic Outreach and Partnerships. This gathering brought together over 200 participants, including Department of Defense and non-DoD members, state and city leaders, veterans' organizations, civic groups, and industry representatives. The event aimed to inform and educate influential individuals about military recruiting and advertising, highlighting the unique opportunities the Army offers to potential recruits.

At the Founders’ Banquet, hosted by Mr. Ricky L. Lewis, Army representatives engaged with military retirees, fraternity members, and local citizens. Discussions centered on the benefits of military service and employment opportunities within the Army. The event also featured the presentation of the Brigadier General Charles Young Award, honoring his posthumous promotion and recognition.

The U.S. Army's active participation at the Conclave not only demonstrated its commitment to service but also strengthened its ties with the community, offering valuable insights into the opportunities available through military service.

THE OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY, INC.’S PAVER DEDICATION

On June 27, 2024, during the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.’s, 84th Grand Conclave in Tampa, Florida, the Visit Tampa Bay organization honored the Fraternity with a commemorative paver. This paver is inscribed with “Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., 84th Grand Conclave June 26 - July 2 Tampa, FL. Ricky L. Lewis, 42nd Grand Basileus, John Howard, Executive Director, Anthony Perkins, Grand Marshal - A Conclave with a purpose. The largest ever!” symbolizes a significant milestone in the Fraternity’s rich history.

ceremony marked the culmination of meticulous planning spearheaded by Brother Anthony L. Perkins, the 84th Grand Marshal, and Ms. Sherri Brown, whose combined efforts ensured the event’s success.

The paver is located on the scenic Tampa Riverwalk, behind the Sail Plaza restaurant. The paver serves as a lasting tribute to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s largest Grand Conclave, aptly themed “A Conclave with a Purpose.” This historic marker will be a permanent fixture, seen by both Tampa residents and visitors as they enjoy the Riverwalk.

The presentation of the paver was a momentous occasion, led by Ms. Sherri Brown, Vice-President of Multicultural Sales and Development, who conducted the unveiling to Brother Ricky L. Lewis, the 42nd Grand Basileus, in the presence of the Fraternity’s Supreme Council, the 84th Grand Marshal, and numerous other members. This

This dedication not only celebrates the Fraternity’s enduring legacy but also highlights its leaders’ collaborative spirit and dedication. The 84th Grand Conclave will forever be remembered, enshrined in the heart of Tampa, symbolizing unity, purpose, and the significant contributions of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

As we gathered in Tampa, Florida, for the 84th Grand Conclave of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, we stand at the crossroads of history, emboldened by our collective mission to uplift our communities through the power of the vote. The aim was to rekindle the flames of activism, to educate, to mobilize, and to register our brothers and sisters to vote, ensuring that every voice is heard in the corridors of power.

Derrick Johnson, the esteemed CEO of the NAACP, eloquently reminds us, "We are a bipartisan organization that cannot endorse a political candidate, but we can definitely fight against white supremacy that attacks our communities." His words resonated deeply with our mission, for we understand that our fight is not just about casting a vote, but about dismantling the structures that oppress us.

In this spirit, our efforts have been both relentless and strategic. Leading up to the Conclave, we have initiated a comprehensive Voter Registration, Education, and Mobilization (VREM) campaign. Our approach is multifaceted, involving the establishment of Mobilization Captains and Voter Registration Captains across the state of Florida. Brother Randall Eaton, chairperson of International VREM Committee alerts, “there was nothing silent about the massive march during the 84th Grand Conclave. The optics of over 2,000 people and stirring message by Brother Ben Crump was more than memorable.” Grand Basileus, Ricky Lewis, highlighted, “these leaders are tasked with the critical mission of spearheading our efforts, ensuring that every eligible voter is registered and informed.”

We recognize the importance of accessibility, and to that end, we have partnered with local churches to provide buses, as well as rideshare services, to assist in our mobilization efforts. Our goal is to leave no stone unturned and no voter behind.

To measure the impact of our initiatives, we are implementing a robust quantification process. Monthly data collection and analysis will enable us to track our progress and adjust our strategies as needed. This data-driven approach ensures accountability and transparency in our efforts.

Collaboration is key to our success. We are partnering with the Divine Nine (D9) organizations and other community groups throughout Florida. Brother Derrick “Deek” Ivory, chairmen of the International Social Action Committee, through which the Voter Registration Education and Mobilization program was executed during the 84th Grand Conclave states, “through direct action we amplify our reach and strengthen our impact, united in our common goal of voter education and empowerment.”

Voter education remains a cornerstone of our strategy. By working with community partners, we provide resources and information to ensure that our brothers and sisters are not only registered but are also informed about the issues at stake.

As Omega Men, we are committed to making a difference. Our work at the 84th Grand Conclave is a testament to our dedication to justice and equality. Let us continue to rise, to register, to educate, and to mobilize, ensuring that our communities are empowered and our future is secured.

84th Grand Conclave PUBLIC MEETING

The men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., came together for the 84th Grand Conclave titled A Conclave with a Purpose.

The ‘Public Meeting’ is a tradition for Divine 9 organizations held during their biannual conventions. The meeting is an opportunity to expose the public to the history, accomplishments, and work of Black Greek-letter fraternities and sororities. On Friday June 28th at 3:15 pm in the East & Center Halls the 84th Grand Conclave Public Meeting began. One purpose of this meeting is to recognize those local businesses and organizations who played a pivotal role in making the Conclave a success.

Our Grand Chaplain Bro. Roi Johnson opened us up with a powerful word of prayer. We were greeted with remarks by our 42nd Grand Basileus Bro. Ricky L. Lewis. Bro. Kwame Dow (Immediate Past 12th DR) served as Master of Ceremonies. Bro. Benjamin Crump brought greetings and reflected on the success and impact of the 2,500 brothers who took part in the Silent March from the Tampa Convention Center to the City Hall at 8:00am earlier that day. “We did this in protest to the Governor and his administration that teach Black History, Literature & Culture is not a criminal act.” Bro. Crump set the tone with his civil rights speech. He talked about what cannot happen “on the Ques watch.” He closed out his speech by saying, “at the 84th Grand Conclave the largest Conclave in our history today on the frontline that we the Men of Omega are here to declare Black History Today, Black History Tomorrow, and Black History Forever.”

As we continued with remarks from community partners the Mayor of Tampa, Jane Castor, brought greetings to the brotherhood and talked about the impact and the relationship that had been built with the Men of Omega over the past 6 years. She saluted Omega for staying the course and not dismissing the commitment to gather in Tampa despite tensions with the governor’s political views. She expressed her gratitude to the brotherhood and highlighted the financial impact that the Conclave leaves on the city of Tampa. Our decision to stay in Tampa has helped other Divine 9 organizations to also commit to the city which will further drive economic increase to the local businesses and city of Tampa. Mayor Castor was blown away by the sea of Purple and Gold present at the Silent March earlier that day. She jokingly stated that for the duration of the Conclave Tampa Bay will be known as Omega Bay. We were also greeted by the Tampa Police

Chief who presented Grand Basileus Bro. Ricky Lewis with a commemorative police badge.

The brothers of Omega Psi Phi remain in support of St. Jude’s Hospital and continue to make monetary donations each year. This year we exceeded our goal and donated $203,000 to the hospital on behalf of the brotherhood to aid in providing families with treatment of childhood cancers at no expense. Unity was displayed with

representation from the following organizations of the Divine 9: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. Each gave greetings and also made contributions to the Scholarship fund. We were addressed by other partners and legislatures and members of the NAACP from the City of Tampa.

Financial Empowerment Series: The Building Blocks of Success

As part of the Conclave With a Purpose, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., hosted a financial empowerment series with representatives from US Bank, JP Morgan and eMONEco.

The first session, hosted by US Bank, centered on the importance of homeownership and education through their program U.S. Bank Access Home, the company’s long-term approach to building wealth and redefining how it serves diverse customers. The initiative includes a $3 million investment over the course of the next three years, focused on the Black community first where the disparities are the largest.

JP Morgan hosted the second one hour session entitled “Uncover Your Money Personality”. In this session, participants were led through a process to discover their relationship with money. Understanding your money personality is the first step toward financial health, helping you uncover your approach to spending, saving, and investing, and where you need to take action.

The final session was a panel hosted by eMONEco discussing financial literacy. Financial literacy is a critical life skill that empowers individuals to make informed and effective decisions with their financial resources. For the African American community, enhancing financial literacy is particularly crucial due to historical and systemic challenges that have contributed to economic disparities.

The African American community has faced significant economic challenges due to a history of slavery, segregation, discriminatory policies, and systemic racism. These factors have led to persistent wealth gaps and limited access to financial opportunities. By hosting these financial empowerment sessions, Omega Psi Phi’s Conclave With a Purpose was integral in enhancing financial literacy, a critical step towards overcoming historical and systemic economic challenges. By building wealth, accessing financial services, and fostering empowerment, financial literacy can transform lives and communities.

JuilliardMasterclass

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., made a powerful impact in Tampa during their Grand Conclave, bringing with them a strong commitment to nurturing youth and celebrating the arts. Central to this mission were the fraternity’s Talent Hunt Program and a special Juilliard Masterclass, both held at the Tampa Convention Center.

These events, which were open to the public at no cost, were more than just showcases—they embodied the fraternity’s “Conclave with a Purpose” initiative, which highlighted their dedication to artistic excellence and community empowerment. By offering young Black artists a premier platform to both display and develop their talents, Omega Psi Phi continued its longstanding tradition of fostering creative brilliance within the African American community.

The Juilliard Masterclass, held on Friday, June 28, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., was a highlight of the Conclave. Featuring students and faculty from the world-renowned Juilliard School in New York, this one-day program provided intensive artistic mentorship to the young participants of the Talent Hunt. Through performance demonstrations, clinics, panel discussions, workshops, and constructive feedback sessions, the masterclass elevated the artistic skills and confidence of these emerging talents.

This collaborative effort between Omega Psi Phi and the Juilliard School reflected the fraternity’s unwavering dedication to the arts and the development of young Black artists. The event not only aligned with the fraternity’s mission but also exemplified their broader vision of using the Grand Conclave as a platform for meaningful, purpose-driven initiatives that benefited both the fraternity and the communities they served.

As the brothers of Omega Psi Phi gathered in Tampa, their focus on youth and the arts ensured that this year’s Conclave would be remembered not just for its gatherings and celebrations, but for the lasting impact it had on the next generation of Black artists and leaders.

SHOWCASING BRILLIANCE

The 84th Grand Conclave of Omega Psi Phi, held in the sunlit embrace of Tampa, Florida, became a beacon of brilliance and raw talent during its Talent Hunt program. Over two unforgettable days, a series of technical workshops and awe-inspiring performances transformed this event into a grand tapestry of artistic excellence.

The sun had barely kissed the horizon on Friday, June 28th, when the doors opened at 8 a.m. for a marathon of masterclasses extending until 5 p.m. Under the guidance of the illustrious Juilliard School, participants were thrust into a crucible of advanced training. The precision of technical instruction, coupled with hands-on clinics, aimed to polish the participants into professionals of the highest order. “Although some of the feedback stung, I know that it will advance the careers of everyone who participated,” reflected Mal Matthews, the Fifth District Talent Hunt Committee Chairperson, with a mixture of pride and empathy.

Twelve talented individuals, selected from across the Omega nation, had the honor of participating in this intensive program. The Juilliard professors, with their extraordinary attention to detail, served as both mentors and role models, embodying the elite standards required to captivate an audience. One professor poignantly remarked, “The time spent in practice does not compare to the level of in-the-moment practice necessary to move an audience to devout recognition.”

Beyond the individual triumphs, the Talent Hunt program also sowed seeds of philanthropy. Twenty-five violin kits were donated to the Orange Grove Middle Magnet School in Tampa, a generous contribution made possible by the Talent Hunt Instrument Donation Program. Larry Pough, International Talent Hunt Chairman, highlighted the significance of these efforts: “The men of Omega underscore the importance that the youth need a forum to display their talents... this was evinced by the foresight of Brothers J. Austin Atkins and Dewey Duckett, not to mention the support from the Omega Life Membership Foundation, International Talent Hunt Foundation, and the Supreme Council.”

“The Talent Hunt at the 84th Grand Conclave was not just a display of talent, it was a celebration of the boundless possibilities that arise when expertise is nurtured and allowed to flourish.

The evening’s crescendo was orchestrated by Dr. Carlton Lampkins, the master of ceremonies, whose words resonated with the audience: “The musical and movement gifts exemplify the manner in which the fine arts leave an indelible imprint on an audience, community, and the future.”

The list of performers read like a roll call of prodigious talent: 1st District: Pelin Su 2nd District: Mikayla Jones 3rd District: Joshua Bold 4th District: Anthony Dorsey 5th District: Ariah McEwen 6th District: Kendall Gonzales 7th District: Clarissa Coleman 8th District: Essence Cunningham-Peoples 9th District: Jeffrey Berry 10th District: Landen Kendrick 12th District: Lunoi Mitani 13th District: Lydia Pound

Under the watchful eyes of Grand Basileus Ricky L. Lewis and Vice Grand Basileus Mark Jackson, the performers, spanning violinists, pianists, cellists, vocalists, and dancers, wove a rich tapestry of artistic excellence. Each note, each movement, was a testament to the transformative power of dedication and passion, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to witness the spectacle. The Talent Hunt at the 84th Grand Conclave was not just a display of talent, it was a celebration of the boundless possibilities that arise when expertise is nurtured and allowed to flourish.

SILENT MARCH I AM BLACK HISTORY

Following in the spirit of marches that occurred during the civil rights movements, the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., held a Silent March on June 28 2024 during their Grand Conclave In Tampa, Florida, that was open to the public.

Despite the rain and the high humidity, over 2,500 people showed up at Tampa Convention Center riverwalk to march in solidarity. The men of Omega decided to hold the silent march to raise awareness of several political policies that affect the black community such as; the removal of Black history from curriculum, the law banning DEI programs in any state funded programs, and proposed legislation that inhibits the ability of citizens to cast a vote. Those laws have led to the reduction of nearly 1 million voters from the rolls. That legislation has primarily impacted Black and Brown communities.

The march route took place along the riverwalk that features 30 bronze busts of people with significant ties to Tampa Bay. Eight are Black, including Omega man Benjamin Mays.

Everyone that registered for the march received a purple T-shirt that said “I am Black History” on it in gold letters.

“What we wanted to do was come out and show unity to the community,” said 42nd Grand Basileus Bro. Ricky L. Lewis. “And let the community know the men of Omega Psi Phi are hearing. We know what’s happening in Florida and we wanted to show up in force.”

42nd Grand Basileus, Lewis said it was important to bring the message of voter registration, education and mobilization; college education and supporting Black businesses to Tampa. It was especially important to encourage Black men to vote and to help disrupt the prison pipeline by encouraging Black boys to go to college.

At the end of the march route, a rally was held at Curtis Hixon park. Guest speakers at the rally included; Lewis, Brother Benjamin Crump, Mayor of St Petersburg Fl. Brother Ken Welch, and former member of the Florida House of Representative, Brother Sean Shaw.

The speakers encouraged everyone to vote and continue to support educating youth as the crowd cheered them on.

Crump has been at the forefront of civil rights cases in his legal career and is the immediatepast Grand Counselor.

“We’re here to declare to Governor (Ron) DeSantis and enemies of equality that teaching Black History is not a crime,” Crump said at the start of the March. “We won’t let them kill our children’s future, kill our children’s spirit.”

YOUTH SYMPOSIUM

How do Youth Advocacy, Resiliency, and Diversity, Create Effective Strategies for Success in the 21st Century

It was “A Conclave with a Purpose” for the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., in Tampa, Florida, and one of the most purposeful events hosted by the fraternity during the five-day gathering of more than 8,500 Brothers, was a youth symposium held on June 28, 2024, at the Tampa Convention Center.

Brother Charles F. Coleman, a civil rights attorney, frequent legal and political analyst, writer and orator, served as the moderator for the symposium, held for and attended by a convention room full of youths from throughout the Tampa Bay area. Other panelists for the symposium included Brother Ryan Thomas, the Second Vice Grand Basileus of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., a recent graduate of Michigan State University; Brother Thaddeus Bullard (Titus O’Neil), a professional wrestler and former arena football player, and the Global Ambassador of World Wrestling Entertainment, whose charity work in the Tampa Bay area includes helping more than 240 students across the area get into college; former NFL player Brother Dr. Nathaniel “Skato” Hughes, who’s now an anesthesiologist; Brother Adetayo “Tayo” Adesanya, an engineer and a former All-American Division I high jumper and long jumper who founded Agbara Life, a benefit corporation designing wearable tech products that support S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) workshops for underrepresented communities and bringing awareness to S.T.E.A.M. careers; and Tampa Police Department Deputy Chief of Community Outreach and Professional Standards Calvin Johnson, who oversees the department’s commitment to working in partnership with Tampa residents.

The 42nd Grand Basileus of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Brother Ricky L. Lewis opened the symposium, explaining to the youths and those in attendance that the event was designed to empower and equip the young people with the tools and information to help them navigate the challenges of today to build a better tomorrow. The symposium, open to the public for high school-aged (9th - 12th grade) boys and girls, had a free giveaway of books, many of which are threatened to be banned in Florida, along with free book bags to take home the books.

Brother and civil rights attorney Ben Crump also provided comments to kick off the symposium. “This morning, 2,500 Brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity marched from this convention center to city hall in protest and to declare that teaching Black history is not a criminal act,” said Brother Crump. “It’s deplorable that our Black literature, Black history, and Black culture are under attack.”

“Just the thought that it is mandatory that when the Civil War is taught, it is required for middle school to high school students [in Florida to also be taught] that slavery had positive benefits for the enslaved people. Just imagine the psychological trauma this could inflict on our little Black children when their classmates and teachers say to them, ‘Slavery wasn’t bad for you all; it was good for your great, great grandma and great, great granddaddy.’ Can you imagine that? Those who do not intend to teach history, intend on repeating history,” said Brother Crump.

“Omega Psi Phi Fraternity comes to this Conclave to say to the Florida governor and any official who tries to eradicate our Black literature, our Black history, and our Black culture, ‘Not on our watch. Not while the Ques are in Florida. Not while the Ques exist. We will stand up and we will fight for our children’s future. We will speak up for our children’s future and we will stand up for our children’s future. Black history is American history. Without Black history, there would be no American history because we built this joint for free.”

The theme of the two-hour symposium focused on “Strategies for the Future: How do Youth Advocacy, Resiliency, and Diversity, Create Effective Strategies for Success in the 21st Century?” All Speakers during the symposium stressed that the youth, especially young Black men, look beyond the playing field for successful careers, especially those in S.T.E.A.M. fields. They encouraged the youth to read and continue their education beyond high school, become politically aware participate in the electoral process, and remain steadfast in pursuit of their dreams.

STYLE. SOUL. GRACE. EXPRESSION.

MARCHDOWN STEPSHOW

Stepping is a percussive dance form popular in historically Black fraternities and sororities, particularly those within the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Originating in the early 20th century, stepping blends African traditions of rhythmic movement, song, and storytelling with modern elements like gymnastics and military drills.

The roots of stepping trace back to African tribal dances and ring shout rituals, which were adapted by enslaved Africans in America. The modern form of stepping began to take shape in the 1920s and 1930s, influenced by military close-order and exhibition drills, reflecting the experiences of African American soldiers.

In Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., "marching" refers to a style of organized, rhythmic movement in which brothers perform energetic routines that represent pride for the fraternity. This practice is a blend of traditional military drill formations and African-inspired dance movements, reflecting the fraternity's rich cultural heritage and history.

Marching in Omega Psi Phi embodies the principles of: Style, Soul, Grace, and Expression, and often has the following characteristics:

Precision and Synchronization: Brothers move in unison with precise timing, creating visually striking patterns and formations. This synchronization symbolizes unity and discipline.

Chants and Calls: The routines are often accompanied by chants and calls that are unique to the fraternity. These vocal elements serve to energize both the performers and the audience, while also conveying messages of brotherhood, pride, and resilience.

Cultural Expression: The marching and stepping routines of Omega Psi Phi often incorporate elements of African culture and African American history. This is a way for the brothers to honor their heritage and educate others about our cultural contributions.

Marching fosters a sense of belonging among brothers and serves as a visual representation of the fraternity's values and traditions.

At the 84th Grand Conclave of The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, which was held in Tampa, Florida, June 26 - July 2, 2024, one of the major highlights was undoubtedly the marchdown or step show. It was held on Friday, June 28, 2024, at the Tampa Convention Center. Omega Psi Phi Brothers Unite Against APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease

Brothers Harold M. Love, Jr., and Alonzo Mourning have joined forces to raise awareness about APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease at the 84th Grand Conclave in Tampa, Florida. This is not just a medical issue, but a deeply personal one that touches the lives of many in our community.

In addressing kidney disease, it is crucial to understand how to choose and talk to your doctor. Are they aware of the specific blood tests based on your genetics? APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease is a critical health concern that disproportionately affects African Americans. We need doctors who are not only knowledgeable but also sensitive to the unique challenges we face.

Brother Alonzo Mourning’s words resonate deeply: “Adversity introduces a man to himself.” His transparency and courage in sharing his journey with kidney disease inspire us all. We owe a debt of gratitude to Vertex Pharmaceuticals for their partnership in this endeavor. Through initiatives like Power Forward Together, they are providing the tools and information necessary for us to take control of our health.

SATURDAY, JUNE 29

Brother Mourning expressed his gratitude to Brother Harold Love, Jr., saying, “Thank you for your leadership in pushing legislation to provide better health accessibilities for African Americans and underserved populations. When you speak about our culture and health disparities, African Americans lead in all of those categories.” This is a sobering reminder of the work we have ahead of us.

Brother Mourning also emphasized, “We’ve got to change the narrative. I’ve partnered up with Vertex … all the questions you need to ask your doctor, because quite often, the people who are giving advice don’t look like us.” This collaboration with Vertex has been instrumental in advancing research designed to mitigate health disparities that disproportionately affect African Americans.

Dr. Ogo Egbuna, Vice President of Clinical Development at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, shared a critical message: “If you

have evidence of kidney disease, you should check to see if you have the variants… it’s a very simple blood test… for people who have kidney disease due to the variants, half of them are on dialysis in 5 years… it happens really fast.”

As Brother Harold Love, Jr. aptly noted, “Many of our statesponsored health programs may not cover the necessary tests regarding APOL1 and kidney disease. You can go back to your legislators and ask about the numbers and research.” This is a call to action for us all.

Thank you, Brothers, for shining a light on this vital issue and for your unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of our community. Together, we can change the narrative and ensure a healthier future for all.

APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD) can affect you—whether you’re a basketball star or a fan cheering from the stands. Visit www.PowerForwardTogether.com to learn about your risk of developing AMKD.

WHEN WE WEAR THE GLOVES A BROTHER HAS GONE FROM OUR MIDST AND SAILED TO GOLDEN SHORES.

WHEN WE WEAR THE GLOVES A FRIEND HAS PASSED THE FINAL TEST AND WALKS THROUGH PURPLE DOORS. THE CIRCLE HAS AN EMPTY PLACE A VOICE WILL RAISE NO MORE THE SONG OF FELLOWSHIP AND LOVE UPLIFT FOREVERMORE WHEN WE WEAR THE GLOVES

WHEN WE WEAR THE GLOVES A LIGHT GOES FROM THIS EARTHLY LIFE THE VISOR CLOSED AGAIN YET ALL THE HEAVENS OPEN WIDE TO LET A NEW STAR IN.

WHEN WE WEAR THE GLOVES A BROTHER LEAVES THE CHAPTER ROLLS AND MOVES TO OTHER WORLDS FOR WHEN WE SAY OUR LAST GOODBYE HE WALKS ON STREETS OF PEARLS.
