As we welcome in the New Year, the Board of SAE-A is already hard at work developing programs for 2022. This started in February with an extraordinary board meeting to review what SAE-A stands for and what we should be doing to ensure our members get value for their investment in us. This is an ongoing process, but one outcome is a revised Mission Statement and Vison Statement which has been reproduced at the end of this editorial. Creating such documents is not, in itself an outcome, but it does allow us all to focus on what is our purpose and our expectations, so to that end, it is a timely reminder of what we stand for. What is important is what the Board has planned for this year and the first thing we are aware of is that Australia has now returned to as normal as possible since the Covid pandemic. As I write this article, I am buoyed by the announcement that Westen Australia has not only opened its borders to the rest of Australia, but to overseas visitors as well. That means that as a country, we are now open for business and that is very important to SAE-A, as we can now plan for some very exciting events. As you read this edition, you will see some of those planned, particularly for the first half of this year. Our events committee, Luke Callaway and Sam Lagozzino have been working closely with our KE Creative colleagues, in particular, Cara Coughey to develop not only some on-line events but finally face-to-face opportunities for our members to engage after two long years of isolation I wish to highlight some of these events, in particular the Careers Expo scheduled for 31 March, which is an extension of our Formula SAE program. Throughout the pandemic, I must confess one of my pet hates was people calling a Zoom meeting a “virtual” meeting. This Expo is genuinely a virtual conference, 3-D with interactive features, excellent industry leaders speaking about what organisations look for in potential employees and with the opportunity for delegates to ask questions of our guests. I have seen the software at work, and it feels like a real conference, but projected onto your computer screen in the comfort of your home or office. Although aimed at the student membership group, this Expo will also be useful to all our members by way of expanding their knowledge and connecting with industry leaders. Registrations are open. Which leads me to the next major announcement, that Formula SAE 2022 is on and will be back at Winton in December this year, with many local and overseas teams re-joining us after what must have felt for them like an eternity. Planning has already started and this year we will be running a live Driverless Class demonstration, more announcements and details to follow. Finally, our world class APAC 21 Conference (refer details within this edition) is progressing very well with nearly 60 technical paper submissions received from Australia and overseas, with more coming in every week. It is our belief that with the opening of international boarders, delegates and presenters will be keen to embrace a face-to-face conference again and so ours is well timed to attract this group of travellers. I encourage SAE-A members to embrace and take advantage of this opportunity; whether as a delegate, a presenter or a sponsor (perhaps all 3). As I mentioned, 2022 is going to be a big year for all of us, so jump on board and take advantage of what your Society has to offer
