Fellow Optimists,
As we enter the final quarter of this Optimist year, I'm filled with a sense of pride and gratitude for the incredible journey we've shared. From the inspiring speeches at the Oratorical World Championships to the dynamic leadership displayed at the JOI Summit, our youth programs continue to be a beacon of hope and optimism.
The Oratorical World Championships showcased the power of young voices on a global stage. Witnessing these talented young individuals express their ideas with such passion and eloquence was truly awe-inspiring. It's a reminder that the future is in capable hands, and that Optimist International is playing a vital role in nurturing the next generation of leaders.
The JOI Summit was another shining example of the transformative power of our youth programs. The energy and enthusiasm of these young leaders was contagious, and their commitment to making a positive impact in their communities is truly
commendable. The summit provided a platform for them to connect, collaborate and grow, and I have no doubt that they will go on to achieve great things.
And let's not forget our Junior Golf Program, which continues to foster not only athletic skills but also valuable life lessons such as sportsmanship, integrity and perseverance. The program provides young golfers with opportunities to compete, learn and build friendships, all while instilling the values that are at the core of Optimist International: Optimism, Respect, Integrity, and Global Community.
These values guide everything we do, and they are essential to our mission of bringing out the best in youth, our communities and ourselves.
In the spirit of continuous improvement, let's challenge ourselves to be even better in the coming year. Let's embrace change, support new leaders, and always strive to live up to our values. Together, we can ensure that Optimist International remains a powerful force for good in the world for many years to come.
Thank you for your dedication and commitment to Optimism with a capital ‘O.’ I have been honored to serve as your President, and I look forward to continuing our journey together.
Yours in Optimism,
Tracy Huxley

Letter from the Editor
Over the past quarter, I’ve been struck by the resilience and dedication of our members, volunteers and staff. The energy and enthusiasm at our recent events – the Oratorical World Championships, JOI Summit and Optimist International Junior Golf Championship –serve as a powerful reminder of the positive impact we're making in the lives of young people around the world.
As we enter the final stretch of this Optimist year, I'd like to take this opportunity to share some insights into the behindthe-scenes efforts that make these programs possible and highlight some of the exciting initiatives on the horizon.
We are making progress on our Brand Partner Program and the search for the perfect location for our 2026 Convention. While these projects require careful planning and execution, we're confident that they will provide even more opportunities for members to connect and make a difference.
As we navigate the everchanging landscape of the 21st century – embracing new technologies and exploring new partnerships – rest assured, we will always remain committed to our core values.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve as your Executive Director and witness firsthand the passion and dedication of Optimists around the world. Together, we're building a brighter future for our young people, our communities and ourselves.
Yours in Optimism,
Cheryl L. Brenn Executive Director

The C.A.R.E. Program is a structured plan for clubs to celebrate accomplishments while resolving issues and strengthening membership. This 4-step annual program is designed to help keep Optimist club membership healthy, strong and engaged. While allowing everyone to feel they have a voice and an influence in the club's direction.
Celebrate
Host an annual party for your club members, send out invites, invite a fellow Optimist "Facilitator" to run the program, have CAKE and celebrate and discuss the clubs' accomplishments, the impact you have had in the community and the youth you have served.
Send out a member survey 2 weeks prior to the event. Members should be able to answer anonymously and give honest feedback. Include these 4 questions;
1. What do you think went well this year?
2. What do you feel the club needs to work on?
3. What makes you happy to be a member of your Optimist Club?
4. Do you have a new idea for the club as a community service project/ youth activity/ fundraiser? describe.
Address
Have the guest facilitator review the responses from the 4-question survey previously provided to membership. Have an open unbiased discussion. Address any reasons why members leave the club. Make a list of improvements.
Recognize
Recognize any issues, areas for improvement and ways to strengthen membership. Then create an opportunity to recognize members for their accomplishments, exceptional work and effort given throughout the year. Honor certain members with appreciation awards, strength of optimism award and/or a member of the year award.
Excel
Plan to move forward and excel together as a stronger club.

Youth Showcase
The heart of Optimist International's mission beats loudest in our youth programs, and the recent Oratorical World Championships and Junior Optimist International Summit in St. Louis and the Junior Golf Championships at Doral in Miami, Florida, were a testament to that commitment. The events, held concurrently in July 2024, showcased the power of young voices and the potential of youth leadership.
Sav Jordan is one example of how Optimist International brings out the best in youth through programs like the World Oratorical Championships. Click below to learn more about her experience in the oratorical contest and how it will impact her future.
The Oratorical World Championships: A Global Stage for Young Voices
The Ninth Annual OWC transformed Saint Louis University into a global arena of ideas. More than 50 contestants, hailing from as far afield as Haiti, Nepal, South Korea and India, converged to compete in this prestigious public speaking competition. The OWC is more than just a competition; it's a platform for cultural exchange, personal growth, and the development of essential communication skills. The event culminated in a thrilling final round, where the world's best young speakers captivated an audience of over 300 with their eloquence and passion.
Thank you to the Optimist International Foundation, the Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation, and all the contestants, judges, volunteers, teachers, coaches and Optimist Members who helped make this year’s contest successful.

The highlights of the summit include:

OWLS Program
We Need Your Club’s Feedback!
Many Optimist Clubs already work closely with their local schools, but what if there was a way to highlight and amplify that work? That’s the goal of a new program called OWLS – Optimists Working for Learning Success.
Introduced at the 2023 International Convention, OWLS will create an educational umbrella program to track member engagement and school and community impact, and it will provide a focus for Clubs in search of a Signature Program to draw in new members.
The OWLS program will allow Optimist International to develop partnerships with more schools and court endorsements from national educational associations, becoming the premier community service organization working to support local schools.
School projects that Optimist Clubs are already working on include:
• Reading Buddies
• Community (School) Gardens
• Math Tutors
• Buddy Benches
• Care Closets
• Chaperoning Field Trips
• Dictionary Programs
• Classroom Paraprofessionals
• Mock Interviews
For Clubs that have opted into the OWLS pilot program for the 2023-2024 school year, or for Clubs working in schools but not part of the official pilot program, we want to hear from you!
As we plan to roll the program out nationally at this year’s Convention, we need your help to identify challenges and best practices and develop training materials for Clubs that want to follow in our footsteps.
Please CLICK HERE to complete an OWLS Community Engagement form for each school-related project starting October 1, 2023.

• A successful "Superhero Weekend of Giving" that raised $10,000 for the JOI Summit.
• The Donor Appreciation Event in Niagara Falls, where past JOI Presidents shared their inspiring stories.
• Awarded $55,000 in scholarships to the 2024 winners of the World Oratorical Championship.

Spotlight on the "Superhero Weekend of Giving"
OIF President Teri Davis's theme for the year is "Be A Superhero," and Optimists everywhere have embraced it. To support the JOI Summit, the OIF held a "Superhero Weekend of Giving" that was so successful it was extended through the Niagara Falls Convention. The event raised an impressive $10,000, thanks to the participation of more than 250 Optimists.
"The year of 'Be A Superhero' has been amazing,” Davis said. “It's been wonderful to share stories about how Optimists go above and beyond every day to support our communities and young people. The OIF wanted to do its part by asking our 'Optimist Superheroes' to step up and support the JOI Summit."
The JOI Summit, held at Saint Louis University, was a resounding success, with dozens of young people and advisors attending from all over the world. The event provided a valuable opportunity for JOI members to learn and connect.
"The JOI Summit was an overwhelming success,” said Optimist International Executive Director Cheryl Brenn. “We couldn't have done it without the incredible support of the Optimist International Foundation. The generosity of their many 'Superheroes' was greatly appreciated."
A final thank you to all the "Superheroes" who made the JOI Summit and OIF's summer efforts possible. Your dedication and support are making a real difference in the lives of young people!
President Tracy's Worldwide Tour
Optimist International President Tracy Huxley has been on a whirlwind tour this year, visiting Optimist Clubs across the United States and Canada to spread her message of optimism. Her "Spreading Optimism Tour" has taken her to big cities and small towns, where she has witnessed firsthand the incredible work that Optimists are doing to make a difference in the lives of children and their communities.
In October, Tracy kicked off her tour with a visit to Wentzville, Missouri, where she cheered on over 300 kids participating in the Turkey Trot, a 1-mile race for 3rd to 6th graders. The event was an enormous success, promoting physical activity and community spirit. She then joined the North Perimeter Optimist Club for their Optimist Kid's Day in the Park, a fun-filled family event featuring carnival games and activities for all ages. The day was a testament to the Optimist's commitment to creating positive experiences for children.
President Huxley's travels also took her to Mitchell, South Dakota, where she attended a Halloween Spooktac-u-lar organized by the Optimist Club of Mitchell. The event provided a safe and enjoyable environment for families to celebrate the holiday. In Wheat Ridge, Colorado, she helped assemble Autism Rescue Kits to provide essential tools to families and first responders dealing with autism-related emergencies. The initiative showcased the Optimist's dedication to supporting those in need.
Those are just a few of Tracy’s many community visits. Her tour has been an inspiring journey, highlighting the power of optimism and the positive impact that Optimist Clubs have on their communities. By shining a spotlight on these clubs and their initiatives, she is helping to spread the message of optimism and encourage others to get involved in making a difference.

2022-2023 Optimist Club of the Year
The Centerville Noon Optimist Club’s dedication to making an impact in its community is evident in the impressive array of programs and initiatives it has undertaken in the past year. The Club's efforts have not only benefited the immediate community but have also fostered a spirit of optimism and engagement among its members.
Community Service at its Core
The Club's commitment to community service is exemplified by its diverse range of projects. The Haunted Trail, organized in conjunction with the Washington Township RecPlex, collected over 1,900 non-perishable food items for a local food bank, demonstrating the Club's ability to combine fun and philanthropy. The involvement of local JOI and University of Dayton College Club members further underscores the Club's dedication to empowering youth and fostering intergenerational collaboration.
The Club's focus on youth development is evident in its Oratorical and Essay Contests, which engaged 32 and 17 students, respectively. The impressive fact that one private school has incorporated these contests into its curriculum speaks volumes about the impact of these programs.
The Club's recognition of local heroes, such as first responders and caregivers, further strengthens its ties to the community and promotes positive role models. The Club’s Build-a-Bear events for children battling various illnesses, held in conjunction with Dayton Children's Hospital, showcase the Club's compassion and dedication to bringing joy to those in need. The Club's generosity extended beyond providing bears and clothing; they also donated transport wagons, offered face painting, and provided food and beverages.
Empowering Youth through Scholarships
The Centerville Noon Optimist Club's commitment to education is evident in its various scholarship programs. The Will Cale Scholarships, awarded to Sinclair Community College students facing significant life challenges, provide much-needed financial assistance and encouragement. The Club also offers Educational Assistance and Skilled Trades Scholarships, recognizing the diverse aspirations of local students.
Fundraising for a Brighter Future
The Club's fundraising efforts are nothing short of remarkable. The annual Christmas Tree Lot and Avenue of Flags events, netting over $52,000 and $140,000 respectively, demonstrate the Club's ability to mobilize its members and the community at large. The Tom Frasier Tee Off for Youth Golf Outing, which sells out every year, not only raises funds but also supports the Dayton Children's Medical Center oncology-hematology department, highlighting the Club's commitment to children's health.
A Thriving and Engaged Membership
The Centerville Noon Optimist Club's success is a testament to its engaged and dedicated membership. The Club's growth, from 297 members in October 2022 to 338 in September 2023, reflects its appeal and the value it offers to its members. The Club's active presence in the Ohio District, with 17 members holding leadership roles, further underscores its commitment to the Optimist mission.
The Centerville Noon Optimist Club's achievements are a shining example of what can be accomplished when a group of individuals come together with a shared passion for serving their community and empowering its youth. Their story is an inspiration to Optimist Clubs everywhere, and their motto, "Making an Impact," serves as a powerful reminder of the positive change that can be achieved through optimism and dedication.
Optimist International 106th Annual Convention
The 106th Optimist International Convention, held in June in Niagara Falls, Canada, provided a platform for insightful discussions and strategic planning for the organization's future. The convention emphasized the importance of community service and optimism, with a focus on youth programs and organizational growth.
Key takeaways from the convention include:
• Strategic Focus: The organization is prioritizing five key areas: engaging more people in service, developing impactful programs, promoting optimism, improving operational processes, and ensuring sustainable revenue growth.
• New Core Values: Optimist International has introduced new core values: Optimism, Respect, Integrity, and Global Community. These values will guide the organization's mission and activities moving forward.
• Youth Programs: The Oratorical World Championship and Junior Optimist International convention was combined this summer to foster connections among young participants. The pilot Optimists Working for Learning Success (OWLS) program aims to create safe and productive learning environments for elementary school students.
• Operational Efficiency: The organization is streamlining processes through automation, including the introduction of an AI receptionist and chatbot. The website and member resource center are also being improved for better user experience.
• Revenue Growth: Optimist International is exploring new revenue streams, such as subscription models and partnerships.
• Challenges and Changes: The organization is facing challenges related to real estate development and insurance. The retirement of CFO Connie Pellock marks a significant transition in leadership.
• Celebrations and Successes: The convention celebrated achievements like the South Carolina District's high attendance rate and Stan Rhodes' completion of the Optimist Leadership Academy. The successful vote on bylaws changes demonstrates strong member support for the organization's direction.
