Burmese animal-shaped Weights The Weights of the last Kings - Catalogue no. 15
The Weights of the last Kings (1819-1885) King Bodawpaya died on 5 June 1819, leaving behind the second largest Burmese empire after king Bayinnaung of Taungoo during the 16th century. For unclear reasons with his dead the square based lion weights – also called “king weights” – have ceased and only weights in the shape of a Hintha with the 6-rayed star mark (figure 1) or the simplified outline of a bird (figure 2) and the Karaweik weights with the bird-sign were issued yet. It is noteworthy that the bird mark on the right front of the base seems to be punched, in contrast to the Shan bird mark, which is engraved. It is strange that a stamp hasn’t been found yet.
Figure 1
Figure 3 Between Bodawpaya's death and New Year 1886, when Myanmar became part of the British empire, five kings ruled in three different capitals. First Bagydaw decided to move the capital from Amarapura back to Ava. Bagydaw's brother, King Tharrawaddy (reg. 1837-1846), moved the capital to Amarapura again in 1842. After King Pagan (reg. 18461853), who stayed in Amarapura, King Mindon (reg. 1853-1878) moved the capital finally to Mandalay, where with the reign of the last Burmese king, Thibaw Min (reg. 18781885), and the third Anglo-Burmese war the 1,200 years old Burmese monarchy ended.
Figure 2 The present catalogue has been dedicated to the Hintha bird weights issued first during the reign of king Bogydaw (reg. 1819-1837), which can be divided in three groups, Hintha 3A1 (figure 3), Hintha 3A2 (figure 4) and Hintha 3B (figure 5). Between the above mentioned standard forms of the Hintha 3 weights there are various forms with short and longer body (figure 6) or transitional forms with strongly curved tail somewhere among the Hintha and Karaweik shape (figure 7) that could be further sub-grouped. The three Anglo-Burmese wars (1824-1826, 1852, and 1885-1886) leads to massive changes and eliminates the Burmese monarchy finally in 1885, when the last king Thibaw Min was exiled to India.
Figure 4 The slight but significant changes in the shape of the Hintha weights between H3A1, H3A2, and H3B have been caused by the historical facts described above. The H3A weights bear the 6-rayed star mark. Almost all the H3B weights (except a few with embossed outline of a bird) as well as the Hintha weights, which deviating from the standard form (figure 8) are unmarked. Most likely they were issued as “Outlaws” in areas already occupied by the British after 1826 (Arakan and Tenasserim) or after 1852 (The Lower Myanmar including Pegu). It can be

assumed that a considerable number of H3B weights were still produced in the early 20th century.
120/121, table 1. So far two or more weights are illustrated in one image – they are always described from left to right and top to bottom.
Figure 8 Figure 5 Brass weights appeared in Burma, with zinc brought by the British colonial rulers and have been issued yet under royal authority prior to 1886 as Hintha 3A2, bearing an accurate 6-rayed star verification mark.
Many of the weights offered in the present catalogue we purchased from three German collections, acquired in Burma between 1978 and 1985. The provenance is part of the description. It is particularly noteworthy that many of the weights from the old collections are covered with black and/or red coating. If you find a weight in the present catalogue you are interested in, please send your order including the number of the item to: sale@opiumgewichte.com If you have any question about the offered items or would like to request further images or information please do not hesitate to contact us. For your purchase you will receive a purchase receipt.
Figure 6 The highly stylised Hintha weights of the Shan States must be considered separately, getting a prominent place in a future catalogue.
