Animal-shaped weights of Burma & Siam The Kids IV - Catalogue no. 17

The Kids IV The Kids-catalogues are always a good chance for a collector to complete sets with the smallest weights of the standard forms. While “The Kids”-catalogues I to III merely focused onto the Burmese standard weights, only sometimes complemented by very few elephant weights from northern Siam and Laos, we are glad to offer a group of weights and zodiac figurines/charms of this region, which are usually rarely available on the art market, except as contemporary copies. In contrast to the contemporary elephant figurines offered occasionally, some of these objects in the present catalogue show a well elaborated star mark (see figure 1), they are detailed and finely carved as well. The figurines are worn with a smooth surface and attractive patina, one elephant weight is readjusted with lead. Gear & Gear found in their elephant weight collection the four- to eight-rayed star mark (see fig. 1), “sometimes enclosed within a surrounding circle”. The sign usually appears on the front or left side of the base. The weights and figurines from Siam and Laos have been well described by Gustave Salé in his article “Poids Birmans et Laotiens” in the French magazine L’art Décoratif (September, 1910). An early documentation one find in the publication Currency and Coinage Among the Burmese by Sir Richard Carnac Temple (June, 1898). Rolf and Ilse Braun published pieces from their extensive collection 1983 in Opiumgewichte Opium Weights Poids d’Asie. Finally Donald and Joan Gear focused on this topic in Earth to Heaven, Appendix 3, with some illustrations in plate 61.

Mostly the production of the smallest weights was carried out less detailed. For example the tail of the smallest bird weights is almost always infilled, even if it doesn’t correspond to the standard.

fig. 2: Hintha 4A and 4C, tail hollow, inverted “V” We offer a few very detailed carved bird weights (Hintha 4A and 4C from Shan States, please see fig. 2), with a hollowed tail, a very rare find. In the last part of the present catalogue we offer bronze and brass figurines, most likely from Laos or northern Siam, acquired from the German art market. All these pieces are real rarities (tiger figurine, fig. 3).

fig. 3: tiger figurine from Siam or Laos However, please consider that the weights in the “Kids”-catalogues are small to very small and the illustrations do not show their original size. Every weight is described with its weight mass, and height and provenance (if available). Please enjoy “The Kids IV”, our Spring catalogue 2016 with 100 weights. fig. 1: elephant figurine 6-rayed star mark

1a (left) / 1b (right) Toe 1A, Burma (Myanmar), prior to 1600 (see also inside cover image) Toe 1A weights are rare to find. Especially the small pieces of the old sets are mostly already lost. Toe 1A weights appear with two different tail shapes, “horse tail” and “lotus tail”. Here both kinds are available. Furthermore the base could be circular (see left T1A) or oblong (see right T1A). Their Kyat-mass is 15 g/tical. The lion with round base and horse tail (left) has a beautiful golden bronze patina. The T1A lion with oblong base (right) shows rich traces of red coating and greenish oxidization. Both weights are worn but considering age and use they are in excellent condition. reference:
