본 작업물에서는 최대한 줄이기. 심플한 형태와 시각적 경험 을 제공하려고 노력했다.

This structure is based on two figures in a landscape, (mother and Child).

전달하고자 한 형태는 두개의 사람 두개의 물체로 이루어진 하나의 전경이였다.

Through a process of mathematical reduction the landscape became more and refined and simplified. All the other objects in the exhibition are developed simply using a computer, then layers of complexity are added until the computational model and the physical three dimentional print look organic and natural. In other words their construction and development history is hidden within their complexity.

모든 외형은 본질만을 남기고 다 제거해서 LOW DATA화 시 켰다, 결국에 이 제거 과정은 전체 전경을 전경에서 그래픽 으로 변화시키게 되었다. 그래픽적 전경은 더욱더 디지털 느 낌을 제공하게 되었고 실제감과는 더욱 멀어지게 되었다. 다 른 모든 작업물의 컨셉이 디지털에서 실제(아날로그)로 변 화한 것과는 정반대의 과정을 거친 작업물이다. 전경의 모든 제작은 디지털 폴리곤을 평면에 레이져 커팅한 후 재조합을 통해 이루어졌다. 세트 디자인은 사람이 체험가능한 공간을 분석하고 재해석 하여 재현해 내는데에 있다. 이 작업물에서는 체험치를 증강시키기 위해 인공안개를 이 용했는데 인공안개로 인해 디지털적 요소(프로젝터에서 나 오는 레이져 빔)는 공간에서 증강되어 보여지고 공간 속의 관객은 전반적으로 디지털 애니메이션에 속해있는 것과 다 름없는 경험(얼굴 옆으로 비켜가는 레이져 빔등을 느낄 수 있다)을 할 수 있게 된다.

This project is the reverse of that process in every way. The objects are real physical forms ( topological landscape date and human anatomy ), then this data is refined back to minimal polygonal data.

As I have spent a great deal of my time in the UK as a production designer, the work owns a lot to the process of production design in that it is more of an atmospheric physical set piece rather than computer simulation. As the landscape was reduced within the computer it was then digitally fabricated to give an exact replication in the physical world. Everything in the installation is a polygon. The light emitting from the projectors (the virtual cameras in reverse) is also triangulated by virtue of projecting through a smoke layer. This makes every light ray of the animations polygonal against the physical object. In effect you have the experience of being in the triangular landscape as you are intersected by projections beams.

INT_EX라함은 인테리어와 익스테리어를 합친 용어이다. 이 작업물의 의도는 건축물에 있어서 그것의 인테리어와 외부형태(파사드를 포함한 건물의 외형)간의 경계를 허무 는데 있다.

This is a blurring of the boundaries between interior and exterior bodies and architecture. The aesthetics of the object are the fusion of internal human organs and a chintineous exoskeleton.

이 가상건축물의 형태는 인간의 연약한 장기와 곤충류등 의 딱딱한 외부(EXO SCKELETON)를 합치는데 영감을 얻어 서 제작이 되었다.

Much of the work done on Int_Ex was based on Alessandro Minellis book “Forms of becoming”. With his multifaceted view of of the development of evolutionary biology, Minelli sheds light of comparative morphic biology and why living forms adapt and achieve the shapes they do.

이 작업은 반복의 개념을 처음으로 적용한 작품이다. 하나 의 기본 형태단위를 반복시킴과 동시에 변형을 주었다. 자 연에서는 쉽게 관찰되는 형태이기도 하다. 시작은 단순하 나 발생할수록 복잡한 형태를 지니게 한다. 이 부분이 반복 의 개념에 있어서 가장 중요한 부분이다.이 과정으로 발생 한 결과물은 어느 하나 동일한 것이 없게 된다 (비슷할 수 는 있으나 동일하진 않다) 자연에서 볼수 있는 많은 것들 이 동일하지 않는 그것과 같은 이치이다. 또한 이작업은 처음으로 작업한 삼차원 디지털 프린트의 결과물이다. 이 작업을 통해 개인적으로는 상의 왜곡 투 사를 처음으로 실험하기도 하였다. 일반적인 프로젝션 매 핑(이미지 투사)는 투사체의 외형을 그린 후에 매핑할 영 상을 작업하는 것에 반해 이 작업은 3D 프로그래밍으로 제작된 렌더링을 그와 동일한 물리적 프린트에 왜곡투사 (ANAMORPHIC MAPPING)함으로서 프로젝션 매핑을 이루 어낸 경우이다. 그 결과 완벽한 증강체험을 제공할 수 있게 되는데 시작점 이 같은 하나의 물체가 가상과 실체로 나뉘어 다시 만나는 지점이 프로젝션 매핑이 되어 관객이 보고 있는 실제는 가 상이기도 하지만 실제이기도 하게 된다.

This was the first work to explore the process of repetition and the “ Multiple”. The most simple and economical form was taken and step repeated each with a controlled distortion. This is off course how nature develops complexity with the economy of form, a human spinal column is one vertebra stepped and distorted to achieve the whole.

This was also the first attempt at both 3D printing and anamorphic projection mapping. Normally the projection mapping process involves tracing the projected object. This way is different in that the physical object and the virtual object are more or less identical. So an animation made with the virtual object can be re projected onto the physical. The only limiting factor being the distortion qualities of the projector lens. This is why the animation is anamorphic. A distorted image that is corrected by the inverse distortion of the projection lens. In art history this is nothing new as anamorphism has been used by painters for a few hundred years. Here the difference is that the anamorphic quality is 3 dimensional. This modern phenomenon is also referred to as “Augmented Reality”.

이 작업에 사용된 렌더링의 컨셉은 환경에 따라 자유자재 로 변신하는 해져 동물( 오징어, 산호초 등등)들의 변신에 서 얻었다.

“이것은 인간과 건축물이 새로운 건설과정으로 융합하는 것이다. 어쩌면 애초부터 인간과 건축물은 따로 존재하지 않거나 그도 저도 아닌 그 무언가이다”. 오랜기간동안 컴 과학자들에게 큰 목표가 있어 왔다. 그것 은 9400만 폴리곤/초당 제약을 넘는 것이다. 이 숫자는 데 이터 전송의 속도를 의미하는데 예를 들어 게임의 실제감 을 결정하는 구현 수준을 생각하면 이해하기 쉽다. 십년 전 컴퓨터 기술은 고작 수십만 폴리콘/초 수준이였고 최근에 이르러서야 겨우 일,이백만 폴리곤/초에 다다랐다. 컴퓨터 과학자들은 이 목표에 다다르면 비로소 인간은 컴 퓨터에 의해 만들어진 가상세계를 실제와 동일하게 느낄 수 있게 될 것이라고 믿는다. 가상 시뮬레이션을 통해 인 간은 무한한 경험을 실제와 같이 재현해내고 체험할 수 있 게될 때 어떤 현상이 일어날 것인가에 대한 질문에 답하고 자 한것이 이 작업물의 결과이다. 물리적 자원의 변형, 파 괴를 수반하지 않는 수많은 조작과 변형이 가능한 시뮬레 이션(OR ANOTHER SPHERE OF REALITY)세계에서 생물과 무생물의 경계, 인간과 사물의 경계는 무너질 것이고 대부 분의 사물들은 자연발생적으로 기를 수 있게 될 때 건축물 에도 생명의 개념이 부여되고 인간처럼 자라는 순간이 오 게 될 것이다.

If anything this project is an experiment in convergence and the logical extrapolation of current computer game and simulation development and its logical conclusions when fused with human desire and taboo driving this technologies.

There is a maxim “94 million polygons per second” in computer simulation development. This figure is a measure of the amount of data that a human experiences every second and equates with outré perception of reality. It is the goal and thresh hold of computer simulation and game designers/ engineers.

Five years ago computers could achieve 200,000 ploys per second. These days is around one or two million, this in terms of data exceeds moores law. Probably the threshold will be reached with a decade or so.

Given that Arthur C Clarke posited that all communication technologies are first explored by taboo we would expect to see a human entertainment/ lifestyle system that would be very different for the one we see now. The end of location and the end of the separation between body and architecture. A separate structure and reality driven by fetishism and human desire.

본 작업물은 파동 공식을 시각화 하고 이를 전화신호로 변 형할 수 있는 체험을 제공하는 작품이다.

Wave function deformer controlled by remote telephone connection.

여기서 이루고자 했던 것은 전화신호로 조정이 가능한 작 업물을 제작하는 것이였는데 게임과 같은 목적성 작업물 이 아닌 감상이 주된 작업물을 만들어 내는 것이였다. 이 작업물이 주는 또다른 재미는 관객이 작업물을 조정한 후 에 남는 파동의 잔재가 다른 관객으로 하여금 이전 관객 의 자취를 느끼게 해준다는 것에 있다. 0과1의 디지털 신 호에 의해 순간적으로 반응하였다가 멈춰버리는 대다수 의 디지털 작업물과는 다른 메세지를 받을 수 있다는 점 은 비록 디지털로 제작된 작품이라 할지라도 인간적 감성 이나 존재감을 남기기에 부족하지 않다는 점을 알게 해준 작업이다.

This installation is an experiment an fusion of two projects.

The first is the control of an artwork or installation via mobile telephone. The reason for the telephone connection as a remote interface is to bypass the location specific sensor paradigm. With the mobile it is possible to achieve interaction that is not localized by 0 to 10 meters range of a standard sensor.

This type of device is based loosely on the remote terrorist hacks used to control detonations remotely.

이 작업물의 또다른 목적에는 이 작업을 가능케한 전화 수 신 장치에 있다. 이 장치는 기존에 센서를 기반으로 한 근 접접근-반응의 관계를 통해 이루어지는 미디어 아트와 차 별을 둔다. 반드시 작업물 앞에서 있어야 할 필요가 없이 외부에서 설치 또는 소통이 가능한 작업을 가능케 했고 심 지어 다른 나라에서 이 작업물과 소통할 수 있는 기반을 제공한다. 아트 작업이지만 대중적으로 다가갈 수 있는 작업물로서 의미를 두고 싶다.

This opens the door for close, mid and long distance interaction with media facades or actuator controlled architecture. The wave function deformer is based on a standard game engine environment. This was chosen as the modern game engine is capable of real-time display and deformation of a large number of polygons per second.

One unusual and unforeseen byproduct of the installation is that of post interaction resonance. Because the damping characteristics of the wave leave an impression well after the interaction has taken place, people who engage with the installation 20 or 30 minutes late can see the faint impression of the last person to use the device.

이 프로젝트는 두개의 부분으로 나눠진다 첫번째는 영상 컨텐츠이고 두번째는 그 영상을 보는 관객의 모습이다

This project is really in two components. The Animation and the viewing device.

영상은 태아의 성장과정에서 영감을 얻은 추상물이고 정 의 내릴 수 없는 생물학적 형채이다. 영상의 본질은 TIMELAPS(시간차 연속이미지)적 방법론을 통해 생물 다큐멘터 리의 영상들이 그러듯 영상의 비연속적인 분절 느낌이 나 도록 의도적으로 제작되었다. 영상에 등장하는 유기적 형 태 자체는 PROCEDURERLY GENERATED OBJECT로서 반정 도는 코딩에 의해 자연발생적으로 생성되고 그 중간 단계 는 원하는 만큼 조정이나 변형을 의도적으로 발생시켜 제 작된 것이다.

The animation is based on the growing structure of a zygote, from cell to embryo. I based the spasmodic movements on hi speed photographic time lapse sequences. The structures within the animation where produced using a combination of procedural code and stepped selection. This selection process is also known as the “ genetic” approach. Each group of 10 procedural experiments produces a model or form. Then one of the ten is selected and the a series of distortions and more procedural work, and so on and so on.

작가가 컴퓨터로 작업물을 창조하는 것 그것은 생명체의 진화와 발전과 다르지 않다는 점을 말하고 싶다. 작가의 창조적 과정은 생물학적 유전적(선택적) 진화 발생 과정과 동일하다. 보통은 컴퓨터 시대에 인간에게서 그러 한 능력과 본질을 앗아갔다고 생각하기 쉽지만 사실은 컴 퓨터와 소프트웨어 기술로 인해 그러한 과정이 더 쉽고 보 편화되었다고 생각한다. 자연발생적인 과정은 수억만년이 걸릴 수 있다 하지만 현 대 소프트웨어 기술은 이러한 진화과정을 단시간내에 이 룰 수 있게 하였고 그로 인해 작가는 그 전과는 비교할 수 없는 새로운 영역을 경험하거나 탐구할 수 있는 기반을 지 니게 된다. 두번째로는 영상을 볼 수 있게 하는 기기에 관한 것이다. 이 기기는 TRUE STEREOSCOPIC. 극장에서 영상 투사는 순 식간에 하나의 눈에 해당하는 영상을 하나의 눈에 번갈아 가며 비춘다. 그러나 좌/우 영상신호를 동시에 보낸다. 이 기술은 실제감을 향상시키며 실제 인간이 경험하는 입체 감과 동일한 작용을 하게된다. 또한 이 안경의 위치는 아 이의 키와 비슷하다. 이를 통해 관객(보통은 어른)은 본인 의 일반적인 눈높이에서 보던 익숙한 환경을 떠나 다른 세 계의 경험을 하게 됨을 무의식적으로 전달하고 싶었다. 또 한 본인보다 낮은 높이의 작품을 감상하는 모습은 외부에 서 관찰될 때 무엇인가와 소통하고 있음을 전달하는 자세 를 제공한다.

The viewing device and its position are significant. Firstly it’s a stereoscopic device that I made 6 or 7 years ago. As it is true stereoscopy the viewer has two distinct and separate signals into each eye. This gives a true 3D image with rounded depth. This is not the same as modern cinema devices which use an alternating signal projection or display method, which gives rise to a multi planar space. Foreground, midground and background plates.

This device has a complete three dimentional appearance.

Also the attitude and posture of the person viewing the device is that of bending and looking into the eyes of a juvenile or infant.

As with Marcel Duchamp’s “Etant donnes” room the people outside the viewer also have the experience of seeing the engaged user outside their environment engaged in a separate simulated reality.
