California is the fourth largest wine producer after France, Italy and Spain. European grape varieties were first introduced to the region by Spanish missionaries. The vast land is hugely varied with influences from the Pacific Ocean, mountain ranges and geological faults to produce differing terroirs from north to south and east to west. Cowboy country, Gold Rush and Prohibition, all have had their impact. A tasting in Paris in 1976 put Napa on the map, but it makes up only 4% of Californian wines, although it accounts for 20% of the sales value, so there are many more regions and wines to discover. Links between Spain and Italy with the US (Spanish missionaries brought vines to California, Italian immigrants were important to the development of California) make it fitting to complement the cellar offering with Spanish and Italian wines. Working with the team at Vinoselección we bring you our current top picks from Spain. Tuscany has to be one of the most beautiful wine regions; we bring to you the wines from Cinciano. Burgess Cellars on Howell Mountain sits on the northeast side of Napa Valley in the Vaca range and overlooks the bustling wine town of St. Helena. Prior to prohibition the region was well-known for Zinfandel, but when Tom Burgess purchased the old 1870s era winery in 1972, there were just two dozen wineries in operation in the whole of the Napa Valley. How things have changed; today there are more than 400 producers. Tom always believed in the European concept of terroir and today Burgess Cellars still produces quality wines which reflect the vineyard soils, exposure and microclimate. 2010 in California was characterized by a long and cold growing season, but these wines have richness and ripeness of fruit.

Burgess Merlot, Napa Valley, Triere Estate Vineyard, 2010 The Triere Vineyard was established in the 1940s in the Oak Knoll District at the southern end of the Napa Valley close to San Pablo Bay and neighbouring Los Carneros. Like Los Carneros, its proximity to the bay results in a cooler climate making it better suited to Merlot which is more widely planted than Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard sits against Mount Veeder on a slope which provides excellent drainage on soils of Cortina, very stony loam, and Yolo clay loam. Produced from 100% Merlot, the 2010 has a mellow bouquet with fruits, raisins and ginger spice. Perfect for drinking now, it has soft silky tannins conveying a velvety texture, and lingering cherry and blueberry flavours. The wine was aged in 20% new French oak for 19 months.

Syrah

Youthful in colour and taste, the Syrah has herbal notes, dark fruits, black cherries and ginger aromas. There is purity of fruit and a mineral linear structure with ripe cherry flavours, and a long elegant blackcurrant finish. This wine will continue to mature in bottle. Syrah is grown on the Triere Vineyard and on the eastern slope of Howell Mountain at 400 metres. Despite bud-break earlier than in 2009, both flowering and veraison were two weeks later than normal due to the cool summer temperatures. This extended growing cycle produced grapes deep in colour, full of flavour and rich in ripe tannins. The wine was aged in oak barrels using 40% French and 60% American oak.

Cabernet Sauvignon is what made the Napa Valley famous internationally, proving its standing as a top tier wine region. Burgess’ hillside vineyards are on the steep slopes of Howell Mountain, on both the eastern and western sides, and are planted above the fog line on volcanic soils that are shallow and infertile. Preprohibition, the region was best known for Zinfandel.

Today, it is known for producing fine Cabernet Sauvignon which is now the dominant variety. The vineyard facing west was established before prohibition, in the 1870s, on compressed volcanic ash soils called tuff. The east facing vineyard was developed 25 years ago on Butte stony loam. The combination of the two has produced a wine dense in colour with a ripe berry compote and mint bouquet. It has a fine, silky texture, great balance with rich ripe tannins and a long, elegant, smoky, slate finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon was blended with 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, 4% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot. This combination of grapes, with the various expositions, and soils ranging from rocky marine sediments to volcanic ash, make for a complex and delicious wine. The wine was aged 22 months in French oak, with 20% new, providing a toasty vanilla flavour.

In 1948, John Kautz was a young row-crop farmer in Lodi who believed in the potential of growing grapes in this ex-Gold Rush area. Starting with just 12 acres, he established a reputation for growing quality grapes and soon expanded. In the late 1980s, he and his wife Gail decided to produce their own wine and employed winemaker Steve Miller who continues his work in the winery built at Murphys.

Stone Valley Chardonnay, California, 2013 The Stone Valley Chardonnay 2013 has an intense ripe fruit nose with spicy oak and nutmeg. Rich on the plate, it has fresh apple acidity and a baked apple and cinnamon finish. Chardonnay vines are planted on well-drained gravelly soils, hence the name, with grapes harvested in the cool pre-dawn hours. Gentle pressing was followed by cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks. This is good value, everyday-drinking Chardonnay.

Stone Valley Merlot, California, 2013 Violets, red cherries and incense aromas are followed with a soft, yet weighty palate revealing fresh bitter cherry flavours and a spicy finish. The Merlot grapes were sourced from a select number of northern California vineyards. A touch of Petit Verdot adds freshness and two months maturation in French oak added spiciness. An unpretentious wine, it will pair with many styles of cuisine.

Stone Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, California, 2013 Vibrant in colour with dark fruits and violet aromas, the Stone Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 is structured with good mid-palate fruit, chewy tannins and perfumed flavours of violets and blackberries. Cultivated in northern California, conditions produced small grape clusters rich and concentrated in flavour. These were crushed and fermented in Australian-designed rotary fermenters to obtain full colour extraction and maximum flavour. The wine was subsequently aged for four months in French oak.

The grapes came from the La Slough Vineyard in the ClarksburgDelta region. The vineyard was planted in 2001 on sandy loam clay soils with an east-west axis.

Butterfly Ridge Zinfandel, Amador County, 2012 Grapes coming from the Clockspring Vineyard in Amador County have produced a spicy wine with tobacco and a hint of leather on the nose. The 30 year old vines have been farmed organically on sandy loam soils, gaining certification in 1994. The vineyard is dry-farmed “with no use of irrigation” conferring structure. The wine was aged for 12 months in American oak barrels.

A dry style of White Zinfandel, the Butterfly Ridge Zinfandel Rosé has nice aromas of watermelon and strawberries. On the palate it is light with good refreshing acidity, and cranberry and cherry flavours. It is a real crowd pleaser. The vineyard was planted in 1989 on sandy loam soils. After picking, the grapes were crushed and fermentation arrested to leave some residual sweetness.

Butterfly Ridge Zinfandel Rosé, California, 2013

Butterfly Ridge Pinot Noir, Central Coast, 2013 Earthy fruits, cooked red fruit compote and a relatively light palate make this a very enjoyable Pinot Noir.

The grapes were sourced from Paso Robles, a region better known for Zinfandel and Rhône varieties, yet it is extremely varied in terroir and climate. Given the right combination of grape varieties and site, it can produce many different styles. Pinot Noir was planted in 1984 on sandy loam soils and has received rave reviews since the first release in 1986. The wine has a touch of oak after eight months in new American oak barrels.

Butterfly Ridge Chardonnay, Monterey County, 2013 The grapes for the Butterfly Ridge Chardonnay come from vines planted 38 years ago. Lime yellow in colour, it has intense tropical mango and pineapple fruits complemented with a “bready” characteristic and balanced acidity. The cool Monterey region, influenced by the proximity of the ocean, produces elegant, crisp Chardonnays. The Butterfly Ridge Chardonnay was fermented and matured in stainless steel allowing the wine to fully express its varietal characteristics.

Wente Vineyards Livermore

The Wente winemaking family is one of the oldest in California. It was the first to bottle varietal labelled Chardonnay and much of the Californian Chardonnay planted today can be traced back to the original Wente clone. Based in Livermore to the east of San Francisco, the family was a pioneer of Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco region and works with producers across the state.

Blue Rock was first settled by Italian immigrants who were drawn to work at the Italian Swiss Colony Winery down the road. In 1987, the rundown property was reborn. The estate consists of 100 acres of five Bordeaux varietals and a small hillside of Syrah.

Raywood Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Central Coast, 2013 Bright plum in colour with a floral perfume, the Raywood Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 has good weight with mid-palate fruit, balanced acidity and a touch of oak.

Still very young at the time of tasting it was showing all the hallmarks of previous vintages offered. Named after the Raywood ash trees that grow on the Central Coast estate, this range of wines was created to showcase the variety and the region.

Castoro Cellars Merlot, Estate Grown, Paso Robles, 2012 Intense in colour with mellow berry fruit flavours, blackberries, vanilla, smoke and herbs, there is a ripeness of fruit and depth that shines through. Paso Robles was one of the last cowboy towns built up around cattle and horse ranches. Grazing land was replaced with vineyards, but the Paso Robles region traditionally sold its grapes and remained relatively anonymous. Niels Udsen and his wife Bimmer believed in the potential of the land and now have one of the oldest wineries in the region. Last year they celebrated 30 years in operation.

Castoro Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate Grown, Paso Robles, 2012 A perfumed wine with floral notes of violets, incense, fruits, herbs and a touch of leather, Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted grape variety in the Paso Robles AVA and it does well in various soils and climates. Castoro Cellars carefully matches grape varieties to vineyard location as there is a huge diversity in the region. The grapes are farmed sustainably. After fermentation the wine was aged for six months in French and American oak.

Castoro Cellars Reserve Viognier, Estate Grown, Paso Robles, 2013 Nice peaches and fresh apple fruit aromas introduce pears, peaches, and lingering apricot flavours balanced by lemon citrus acidity. Paso Robles has become famous for its Rhône-style wines. The Castoro Cellars Reserve Viognier was produced exclusively from Castoro’s Stone’s Throw Vineyard, planted in 1996, which is literally a stone’s throw from the winery. The grapes were picked and underwent a long, cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine was subsequently aged for 4.5 months in French oak adding creamy texture and a touch of vanilla.

Castoro Cellars Pinot Grigio, Whale Rock Vineyard, Estate Grown, Paso Robles, 2012 Delicate aromas of fresh apples, honeysuckle and spice, and a soft, ripe palate with mellow flavours, stone fruits, and almonds make this a very attractive glass of wine.

The grapes were organically farmed on the Whale Rock Vineyard on the extreme west side of Paso Robles, a few miles from the ocean and close to the Templeton Gap, a break in the coastal range that funnels cold air into the region. The vineyard name is a reference to the thousands of petrified whale bones scattered throughout. The soil is high in limestone, broken sedimentary rock and gravel.

Castoro Cellars Reserve Zinfusion, Estate Grown, Paso Robles, 2012 Deep in colour with forest fruits, blackberries and smoky aromas, this is good, rich, concentrated Zinfandel. The grapes were selected from three vineyards; Cobble Creek, Whale Rock and Shell Creek. Cobble Creek Vineyard is located around the home of Niels and Bimmer. Zinfandel is directly planted on its own roots and is head-pruned and organically farmed. The Zinfusion blend was aged for six months in French and American oak.

Castoro Cellars Reserve Syrah, Estate Grown, Paso Robles, 2011 Intense plum colour, restrained violets and dark fruit aromas, concentrated with structure and good acidity, given a little more time this wine will open up becoming more expressive.

Paso Robles has attracted attention as a region suitable for Rhône varieties with French Syrah cuttings from M. Chapoutier in Hermitage planted in the 1970s and outsiders, such as the Perrin family from the illustrious Châteauneuf-duPape Beaucastel estate, investing in the area. The wine was matured for eight months in French and American oak.

Zinfandelic Zinfandel, Lodi, 2012 The funky looking Zinfandelic, produced from old vines in Lodi, east of San Francisco Bay, is deep in colour with dark cherries and mellow aromas. Medium-bodied, it has fresh cherry flavours with marked acidity and tannins.

Zinfandelic harvests its grapes from some of the oldest Zinfandel vines in California, many planted pre-prohibition.

Lodi enjoys hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, and its sandy soils helped prevent the spread of phylloxera.

Aviary Chardonnay, Napa Valley, 2012 Quintessential Napa Valley Chardonnay, the Aviary 2012 is bright yellow in colour with intense, ripe white fruits, melons, apples and vanilla spice. Soft and full on the palate it has a lime custard flavour and stone fruit finish.

The grapes were sourced from a number of terroirs across Napa Valley to create a harmonious blend; it was matured in barrel for five months. Relatively new, Aviary Vineyards was founded in 2010 by Gregory Ahn, Matt Scarlett and Jonathan White who share a vision of what the Napa Valley can produce.

Baby Blue Estate Bordeaux Blend, Blue Rock Vineyard, Alexander Valley, Sonoma, 2012 A full, intense and complex wine, the Baby Blue Estate Bordeaux Blend 2012 has a bouquet of dark berry fruits, blackberries and blackcurrants with a touch of leather and iodine. On the palate vanilla oak flavours emerge with mellow fruits, raisins, cherries and liquorice; it is refined with great finesse. The grapes were cultivated on the bluestudded soils of the estate. The wine spent 16 months in French oak. Located in Sonoma in the Alexander Valley, Blue Rock Estate is owned by Cheryl and Kenny Kahn. In the mid-19th century, vineyards were planted on this site

by Italian immigrants who brought with them vine cuttings, olive trees and their European way of life.

Alexander Valley is warm and arid, ideal conditions for the cultivation of quality Cabernet Sauvignon. A blend of grapes sourced from several mature blocks, this wine has a floral bouquet with notes of violets, soap, cedar and pencil lead. Still very youthful with great structure and firm acidity, it will mature nicely with time in the cellar. The 2010 is the result of a long, cool growing season and was produced from the oldest blocks planted in 1987. Cabernet Sauvignon was blended with 3% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Winemaker Nick Goldschmidt makes wines that are structured and elegant rather than big and bold. This wine stacks up against the best Napa Cabs with a no-holds-barred approach to winemaking.

Cultivation and selection of the best quality estate grown grapes, the wine was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 50% new and 50% one year. It is worth every cent.

Indigené Cellars Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Carmel Valley, 2012 Indigené Cellars is a small family winery nestled in the upper Carmel Valley. Proprietor Raymond Smith worked in wine packaging and distribution, and started making wine in order to understand his customers and the business better. Then he was bitten by the winemaking bug and has honed his skills to produce exceptionally fine wines.

His concept is to produce varietals most suited to certain climates often less well-known and using single vineyards and single clones. Aromas of cocoa, cassis and spice combine with citrus lemon, lime and grapefruit flavours to produce an elegant, complex wine with great balance.

Indigené Cellars Philanthropist, Carmel Valley, 2009 The mellow, ripe fruit bouquet leads to a soft palate with vanilla and black fruits, complex layers with chocolate and spicy notes, and soft tannins. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend with 21% Malbec and 13% Merlot. The Carmel Valley in Monterey County is nestled in the Santa Lucia Mountains. The vineyards are generally sited on well-drained gravelly terraces above 300 metres and are less influenced by the coastal fog and winds. The Cabernet Sauvignon was picked in two lots on October 12th and October 23rd with Malbec and Merlot harvested in between. The grapes were left to cold soak 48 hours before fermentation. The wine was aged for 12 months in barrels from Taransaud and Seguin Moreau cooperages with 40% new oak. It was then racked and matured a further 22 months in oak before bottling.

Indigené Cellars Pinot Noir, Edna Valley, 2010 The Edna Valley AVA is located in San Luis Obispo County and is part of the larger Central Coast AVA. It benefits from sea air coming in from Morro Bay making it one of California’s coolest regions and hence great for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Indigené Cellars Pinot Noir 2010 is quite developed with a brick, ruby colour and earthy fruit aromas. On the palate it has berry fruits, raisins and vanilla with a long finish. Two Pinot Noir clones were cultivated; the renowned Dijon 115 and Mariafeld 23. The grapes were picked on September 15th and left to cold soak for 48 hours. Fermentation followed using natural wild yeast.

The wine was aged for 19 months in Nevers and Leroi oak barrels with 40% new.

The Cinciano “piazza” or square – to the left, there is the entrance to the cellar which is partially underground, a small warehouse and olive mill. The Vin Santo grapes are dried in the tower. To the right, there is the entrance to the restaurant. The door with the saffronyellow curtain leads to the ancient chapel where mass is still celebrated.

There are many beautiful wine regions around the world, but the Tuscan landscape must be one of the most iconic. The Cinciano estate lies at the western boundary of the Chianti Classico region, on the last promontory overlooking the Elsa Valley. To the west, there are magnificent views of the small medieval hilltop town of San Gimignano and the Colle di Val d’Elsa. This ancient estate, with roots dating back to Roman times, is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

Cinciano Bianco, IGP Toscana, 2013 Mineral in style with flinty lime aromas, this is a complex wine. Produced from a blend of 70% Viognier, 20% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Grechetto the bouquet was preserved through cold-handling of the grapes.

Vines were cultivated at 200 metres on south-east facing slopes of schist and limestone. The grapes were harvested by hand in early September and left to macerate at low temperature for a period of hours before pressing. Structured on the palate with firm, steely acidity, it is a perfect partner for fish dishes and antipasti.

Gotifredo, IGP Toscana, 2013 This rosé is 100% Sangiovese from young vines. The vineyard was planted three to six years ago on Alberesebased stony, compact soils composed of shale, schist and limestone. Vines are trellised using a spur-pruning cordon system which results in the production of low yields. After harvesting the grapes were de-stemmed, lightly crushed and the juice left in contact with the skins for approximately 12 hours. The wine is quite deep pink in colour with delicious floral rosehip aromas. Nicely balanced on the palate, it has lots of dark red fruit flavours.

Cinciano Rosso, IGP Toscana, 2012 Youthful and quite restrained at the time of tasting, the Cinciano Rosso 2012 has nice blackcurrant aromas. Light to medium-bodied, it has good acidity with chewy tannins leading to a bitter cherry finish. Sangiovese grapes were cultivated at 250 to 300 metres and harvested towards the end of September. The wine was fermented in concrete tanks at 26°C and subsequently aged for five months in large Slavonian oak casks.

Cinciano Chianti Classico, DOCG, 2012 2012 was a good year for Chianti Classico despite some hot and dry spells in the summer which led to concerns of drought. Rain at the end of August brought welcomed relief. It was also a year with low yields due to cool, wet conditions around the time of flowering in June. The Cinciano Chianti Classico has nice cherry fruits with a refined, elegant structure. Vines aged 6 to 15 years are planted on south-west facing slopes between 250 and 300 metres producing low yields of just 1.3 kilograms per vine. After picking and fermentation in concrete tanks, the wine was aged for eight months in large Slavonian casks.

Cinciano Riserva Chianti Classico, DOCG, 2011 A concentrated and rich wine that will improve with time, the 2011 Cinciano Riserva Chianti Classico shyly exudes dark fruit aromas and bitter cherry flavours. The oldest plots on the estate, planted 44 years ago at Camponi and Lunghe, were the source of Sangiovese for the Riserva.

2011 was an early vintage in Tuscany, with a heat wave in August coming in from Africa. Fortunately, plenty of water reserves in the soil prevented the grapes from shrivelling, but harvest was generally three weeks earlier than normal. The wine was aged for 18 months in large oak casks, adding structure and weight.

Cinciano Pietraforte, IGP Toscana, 2009 Cinciano’s Super Tuscan is made in minute quantities and only in the best years. A blend of 80% Sangiovese with 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a distinctive herbal, leafy aroma. The savoury palate is concentrated and balanced, but will benefit from more time in bottle to express itself. Record rainfall during the winter was followed by a hot summer, but with cool night temperatures retaining fresh aromatic qualities; 2009 was an excellent vintage for some. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 12 months in medium toasted French oak barrels. Consider airing prior to serving to allow the fruit to unfold.

Cinciano Vin Santo del Chianti Classico, DOC, 2007 A complex bouquet, filled with roasted almonds, vanilla, spices and a certain earthiness, is complemented on the palate with nutty, lemon and caramel flavours and a long, bitter orange finish. Made since the Middle Ages, Vin Santo wines are a traditional part of Tuscan life and are often served to guests with almond Cantucci biscuits. Produced from 70% Trebbiano Toscano and 30% Malvasia grown on old vines, the fruit was picked by hand at the beginning of October and left to dry for two months. The grapes were subsequently destemmed, crushed, and the juice slowly fermented in oak casks and left to mature for five years.

Azumbre Verdejo, DO Rueda, 2013, Agrícola Castellana Historically, Rueda has produced white wine using the local Verdejo grape. Situated at between 700 and 850 metres, the region is subject to long, cold winters, short springs with late frosts, and hot summers. The Agrícola Castellana winery dates back to 1935. Current winemaker Ángel Calleja has produced a wine pale lime in colour, with a broad palate and crisp, lemon acidity.

Sanz Sauvignon, DO Rueda, 2013, Vinos Sanz Sauvignon Blanc is a more recent introduction into the Rueda region which has done seriously well in the climate. Vinos Sanz is one of the oldest in the region with a history dating back to 1870 and six generations of winemakers who, whilst respectful of the legacy entrusted to them, have adapted to modern times. The Sanz Sauvignon 2013 has a subtle, delicate bouquet with limes and gooseberries. On the palate, it has good weight and is well-balanced with lingering tropical fruit flavours.

Sauvignon Blanc grapes were hand-harvested from the 100 hectares estate vineyards at La Seca.

Heredad de Emina Gewürztraminer, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León, 2013, Bodega Emina Carlos Moro has an impressive CV having trained as an agricultural engineer and subsequently holding a series of senior positions in Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture and the Spanish Food and Beverage Industry Federation He has also built up an impressive wine empire with seven wineries around the Duero; the first was Matarromera established in 1994. The Heredad de Emina Gewürztraminer was produced from the best grapes at Villalba de Adaja. The wine has a delicate lemongrass and white blossom bouquet and soft, broad, floral palate with firm acidity.

5 DO’S Tinto, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León, 2012, Abadía de Aribayos From this new project, a very special wine has been created by Bernardo Fariña, son of Manuel Fariña from Bodegas Fariña, and his wife Adela. This is a big wine in every sense; intense deep purple in colour with rich dark black fruits, blackberries, smoke, cedar and smoky bacon aromas. Extremely concentrated on the palate, it has good tannic backbone, great depth and a long, spicy finish. It is a blend of five different DO’s within Castilla y León. This first release is 60% Toro (Tinta de Toro), 16% Bierzo (Mencia), 8% Arribes (Juan García), 8% Ribera del Duero (Tinto Fino), and 8% Tierra del Vino Zamora (Tempranillo). The wine was blended and matured in 300 litre oak barrels for 10 months.

Emina Tinto Fino Roble, DO Ribera del Duero, 2012, Bodega Emina Another wine from Carlos Moro’s stable, this wine was produced at the Emina winery close to Valbuena de Duero in what is known as the Golden Triangle of the Ribera del Duero region. The 2012 Emina Tinto Fino Roble has herbal characteristics with raisin fruit, cherry flavours and firm, chewy tannins on the palate. Produced from the fruit of 60 year old Tinto Fino vines, the wine spent six months in American oak and will benefit from more time in bottle. Bodega Emina uses solar power, composts vine clippings and grape skins, recycles other waste and purifies waste water; it not only makes a great value wine, but it is environmentally friendly too.

On the palate it is succulent with weight and good tannin structure, and a mellow strawberry and vanilla finish. The Pérez Pascuas brothers farm the 135 hectares of vineyards around the little village of Pedrosa following on the tradition from their father Mauro. Mauro, who was born amongst the vines of Pedrosa, was a champion of quality grape-growing leading his sons to establish the winery and make their own wines. Produced from 100% Tinta del País the wine was aged for 12 months in American and French oak.

Cinema Crianza, DO Ribera del Duero, 2010, Cinema Wines The packaging and the story behind the Cinema Crianza may look a bit gimmicky, but the wine inside the bottle speaks for itself. Intense aromas of plummy fruits, cedar and smoke fill the glass. On the palate more refined mineral flavours mix with ripe berry fruits, coffee and bitter cherries. This is a blockbuster of a wine. The people behind it are a group of artists and entrepreneurs from different fields led by Spanish actor Juan Echanove, Guillermo Pérez, and Juan Ayuso responsible for winemaking. Produced from 100% Tempranillo, the wine was matured in French and American oak for 12 months.

Rich and concentrated, it will develop in bottle.

Luis Alegre Crianza, DOCa Rioja, 2010, Bodegas Luis Alegre The family firm of Bodegas Luis Alegre is located on the outskirts of the walled medieval fortress town of Laguardia in the Alavesa area of Rioja. Seductive red cherries and plum fruit aromas lead to a firm palate, which will mellow with time, with red fruit and herbal flavours.

The grapes came from a range of plots of vines with an average age of 35 years. The final wine is a combination of 85% Tempranillo with 15% Mazuelo, Graciano and Garnacha, and was aged for 12 months in 80% American and 20% French oak.

Viña Eizaga Crianza, DOCa Rioja, 2011, Vinos Eizaga Made from 100% Tempranillo, the Viña Eizaga Crianza 2011 has explosive berry fruit aromas with a cedar edge.

Grown on the 40 hectares of vineyards close to the winery, the wine was aged for 14 months in American and French oak barrels. Vines are cultivated on calcareous soils around the town on Laguardia, founded in the 10th century, and are protected from the cold winds from the north by the Sierra Cantabria.

Pujanza Norte, Single Vineyards, DOCa Rioja, 2011, Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza Carlos San Pedro was one of the first people in Rioja to adopt the concept of single vineyard wines when he started Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza in 1998. As owner and technical director he only makes wines from single vineyard sites adapting his approach to the quality of the site, type of soil and climate. The El Gancho Vineyard on Finca Norte, the fruit source for this wine, was planted in 1991. At 670 metres it is one of the highest sites in the Rioja Alavesa. 2.7 hectares are planted on clay-limestone soils and yield a mere 3.5 tons per hectare. Pujanza Norte 2011 is a deep, dense purple colour. Restrained on the nose, it is youthful with a concentrated and structured palate. The balanced acidity and tannins will allow it to mature gracefully overtime. The grapes were fermented in French oak vats and after malolactic fermentation, the wine was transferred and matured in French Allier and Tronçais oak barrels for 18 months.

Gran Colegiata Roble, Vino de Lágrima, DO Toro, 2011, Fariña Having tasted the wines from Bodegas Fariña over the years, I finally recently met the young Manuel Fariña at Prowein in Dusseldorf. Manuel is the third generation of the family and is responsible for vineyard management.

His father (also Manuel) is acknowledged as one of the founding fathers of the Toro region, having helped put it on the map. The Gran Colegiata Roble 2011 has intense plums, damsons, and berry aromas. Light to mediumbodied, it has lots of juicy fruit flavours, cherries and redcurrants, and offers great value for money. The grapes from 30 to 40 year old vines were fermented for seven days and then matured in new and aged French and American oak for four months.

Absum Colección, DO Somontano, 2010, Bodegas Irius The Somontano DO, with its ancient villages and prehistoric caves, is centred around the town of Babastro, close to the Pyrenees Mountains and the border with France. Bodegas Irius, located just eight kilometres from Barbastro, has produced an intense wine with aromas of chocolate powder, cocoa, and dark fruits. The palate is rich and very concentrated. Produced in the new, modern winery, Absum Colección is a blend of 40% Tempranillo, 30% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and was matured for 10 months in French oak. Drinking nicely now, it will complement a range of rich foods and will continue to mature in bottle.

Altos del Cuadrado, Triple V, Viñedos Viejos en Vaso, Monastrell & Petit Verdot, DO Jumilla, 2010, Altos del Cuadrado Jumilla, in the southeast of Spain, is dry and hot. This and its thin sandy soils meant that for over a century it did not fall prey to the phylloxera louse when other European vineyards were uprooted; it continued to produce large volumes of pretty average wine. However, the region did finally succumb in the 1980s and when it did, it took the opportunity to revitalize its wines. New clones of Monastrell were planted. The Altos del Cuadrado estate was planted by the Castaño family with 50 hectares at 800 metres. The wine has herbal, leafy aromas with fennel and aniseed. On the palate it is fresh with a mineral characteristic which develops in the glass. The Triple V 2010 is a blend of 85% Monastrell with 15% Petit Verdot. The wine was matured for 12 months in French and American oak.

Etern, Carinyena & Garnatxa, DOQ Priorat, 2011, Ritme Celler Albert Jané has to be one of my favourite winemakers in Spain. Coming from a Cava producing family in Penedés, he was inspired by the ancient vineyards of Montsant and Priorat to do his own thing. The Etern 2011 just oozes plums, red berries, raspberries and vanilla aromas. The palate is succulent and sweet; opulent strawberry and vanilla flavours are complemented by an herbal, savoury edge. The Etern is made with the fruit from old vines grown on slate slopes with 80% Carinyena (Cariñena) and 20% Garnatxa (Garnacha), and was aged for a year in new French oak barrels. This is a great wine and one worth paying for, if you want to treat yourself!
